Chiefs sign DL Daniel Wise on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have brought back DL Daniel Wise, but this time on a reserve/future contract.

Even with Super Bowl LVII just a week away, the Kansas City Chiefs front office staff remains hard at work, focusing on building out the 90-man offseason roster.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Friday, the team has signed defensive lineman Daniel Wise on a reserve/future contract. The Chiefs actually signed Wise to the practice squad for about two weeks in January before cutting him loose. We reported back then that it was likely he’d return on a reserve/future deal and here we are.

The Chiefs have had their eyes on Wise for a long time, meeting with the former Kansas Jayhawk extensively at the East-West Shrine Game ahead of the 2019 NFL draft. He went undrafted in 2019 and has since spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. For the past two seasons, he stuck with the Washington Commanders, appearing in 17 games with two starts during that span. At 6-3 and 285 pounds, Wise is a player with inside/outside versatility on the defensive line.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, Wise will not be eligible to participate in the Super Bowl. He won’t officially join the team until the new league year begins in March when teams are permitted to expand roster size to 90 players for the 2023 NFL offseason.

Wise is now the third player the Chiefs have signed to a reserve/future contract for 2023. He joins former Bengals first-round draft pick John Ross and former Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle.

Chiefs re-sign WR Jerrion Ealy to practice squad, cut DE Daniel Wise

The #Chiefs continued to shuffle their practice squad on Tuesday, re-signing WR Jerrion Ealy and terminating the contract of DE Daniel Wise.

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued their shuffling of the practice squad as they opened the practice week on Tuesday. This time, they’re bringing back a player who was suspended by the NFL and has been released from the practice squad twice already this season.

WR Jerrion Ealy is back with the team after his second release just last week to make room for DT Phil Hoskins on the practice squad. He was previously released in December, but he recently re-signed after WR Cornell Powell landed on the practice squad-injured list.

This latest re-signing comes after news that WR Mecole Hardman would not be practicing on Tuesday. Ealy’s presence could suggest that they don’t expect Hardman to return this season.

An undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss, Ealy has been a developmental player for the team with upside on special teams. He’s worked with both the running backs and receivers in Kansas City and has the flexibility to play both positions, but it’s worth noting that he’s only listed as a receiver now on the team’s website. In 2021, Ealy played 12 games for the Rebels, recording 133 carries, 768 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. He added 32 receptions, 218 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released former Kansas DE Daniel Wise from the practice squad. Wise was signed in the first week of January after the team released WR Bryan Edwards from the practice squad. Keep an eye out over the next few days as Wise could return to the team on a reserve/future deal.

Chiefs release WR Bryan Edwards from practice squad, sign DL Daniel Wise

Another day and another pair of practice squad transactions for the #Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made another pair of roster moves on the practice squad, this time releasing a wide receiver and signing a defensive lineman.

First up, the Chiefs have released WR Bryan Edwards from the practice squad. A former third-round draft pick by the Las Vegas Raiders, Edwards spent about a month on the Kansas City practice squad. It’s possible that this isn’t the last that the team has seen of Edwards. He could return to the team on Monday when free agents are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs have signed DL Daniel Wise to the practice squad. The K.C. brass has long been a fan of Wise, meeting with him at the 2019 East-West Shrine Game. Former Chiefs DL coach Brendan Daly (current LBs coach and run-game coordinator) coached Wise’s brother, Deatrich Wise Jr., in New England.

A former Kansas Jayhawk, Wise went undrafted in 2019 and spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals on their practice squad. He spent the last two seasons on the active roster in Washington where he appeared in 17 games with two starts during that span. Listed at 6-3 and 285 pounds, Wise has inside-outside versatility and can play both interior defensive line and the edge rusher position.

This roster move on the practice squad might tip the Chiefs’ hand as to their plans with WR Mecole Hardman’s impending activation from injured reserve. Defensive ends Malik Herring and Joshua Kaindoh have been healthy scratches most weeks due to the numbers the team has at the edge rusher position. The team could possibly look to waive one of those players to make room for Hardman.

Commanders DL coach Jeff Zgonina: Sees big things ahead for Montez Sweat

Jeff Zgonina says Montez Sweat is playing well and is close to a major breakout.

Defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina is direct.

Meeting with the media Friday, Zgonina, was laser- focused, a man of a few words, ready to move to the next question.

Though the defensive line is already beat up, Zgonina didn’t back off.

“Next man up, that’s what it is. That’s why we practice through camp and everything. And we just prepare like we do all the time and we just keep plugging along.”

What about the running of Eagle Jalen Hurts?

“He’s a great talent. Gotta keep him contained.”

How hard is it to be disciplined against an elusive player like Hurts?

What, we’re not supposed to be disciplined? I don’t understand what you’re saying. We have a game plan installed and we’re gonna follow our game plan.”

Regarding tackle Daniel Wise?

“Well, he’s here cause he’s a good football player. I mean, that’s why we have him. We saw something in him. He does good things for us and that’s why he is here.”

What is the key to Daron Payne’s success?

“Daron is an exceptional athlete and a football player. I mean, he’s been building ever since I’ve been here. He’s been building and building and building and now it’s starting to show more. He’s a really good football player.”

“I thought he was doing good things last year. It’s not like he just, all of a sudden appeared. I mean, if you watch tape over the years, he’s been getting better and better. Getting older, getting a better understanding of the game. All his hard work is coming to fruition.”

How has Assistant DL Coach Ryan Kerrigan added to the coaching?
“Ryan brings a whole different set of eyes for me. I was a defensive tackle, he’s a defensive end. I think it’s a good combination we have in the room right now. He sees things differently than I did. I’m learning from him as he’s learning from me for the inside. So, everything’s been real smooth and it’s been a good relationship.”

Regarding DT John Ridgeway:

“I knew quite a bit because he is a rookie. So, we just had the Combine a few months ago and I spent some time with him there in the train station. Got to know him. He’s a big kid. He’s learning behind the rest of the guys. We got a bunch of new guys, but behind the guys that have been here of course. He is picking it up fast. He’s a smart kid, big body. I see him being good for us down the road. The more he learns the faster he’ll play. I’ve known him since the Combine.”

Concerning DE Montez Sweat:

“His play has been outstanding. He doesn’t have the numbers yet, but once he breaks through, I see a landslide. I think he works very hard. He’s a student of the game. He’s able to ask questions that’s how I know he’s studying. I know he’s into it. I mean, he has always been that way. And again, once it clicks, you know, he’ll start rolling.”

“He (Sweat) has not shown any frustration or pressing. He understands he’s doing some good things. He understands that it’s gonna come. He’s not at all and nor are we pressing him.”

Final injury report for Commanders vs. Eagles, Week 3

Two defensive linemen are out for the Commanders Sunday.

The final injury report for the Washington Commanders’ Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles is in, and they’ll be without two starters for Sunday.

Defensive end Casey Toohill [concussion] and defensive tackle [Daniel Wise] are both out. Toohill and Wise were injured in last week’s loss to the Detroit Lions.

Linebacker David Mayo [ankle[ was listed on the injury report for the first time Friday and is questionable. Also questionable is defensive end James Smith-Williams. The Commanders cannot afford another injury on the defensive line, as Smith-Williams starts opposite Montez Sweat.

Things look brighter for the Eagles. After listing several players on Thursday’s injury report, mostly rest-related, only guard Landon Dickerson missed practice Friday with a foot injury.

If Smith-Williams is unable to go Sunday, expect Washington to activate someone from the practice squad.

Second injury report for Commanders vs. Eagles, Week 3

Two Commanders did not practice Thursday, while two were limited.

The second injury report of the week is out, and two players missed Thursday’s practice for the Washington Commanders.

Defensive end Casey Toohill [concussion] and defensive tackle Daniel Wise [ankle] each missed practice for the second consecutive day. Either player missing Sunday’s Week 3 game against the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles would be a difficult blow to Washington’s defensive line depth.

The Commanders are already without rookie defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, who injured his knee in Week 1. At defensive end, Washington is still a few weeks away — at least — before Chase Young makes his 2022 return.

The Eagles listed 12 players on Thursday’s injury report, but it was more of a rest day. Wide receiver A.J. Brown, guard Landon Dickerson, offensive tackle Lane Johnson and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox were among those listed as limited for Philadelphia.

Cornerback Avonte Maddox [back] and linebacker Haason Reddick [knee] are the only players believed to be dealing with injuries.

Commanders DL Daniel Wise is out with ankle injury

The Commanders lose two more defensive linemen in Week 2 vs. Lions.

Washington’s lack of depth along the defensive line became an even bigger issue in Sunday’s Week 2 game against the Detroit Lions.

Reserve defensive tackle Daniel Wise departed the game in the first half with an ankle injury. The team quickly ruled Wise out for the remainder of the game.

This is another blow for the Commanders, who lost rookie defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis for the season last week. Mathis, who suffered a torn meniscus, underwent surgery on Friday.

In response to Mathis’ injury, Washington signed defensive tackle Donovan Jeter to the active roster and Benning Potoa’e to the practice squad. Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Lions, Washington elevated Potoa’e to the 53-man roster.

To make matters worse, the Commanders also lost defensive end Casey Toohill, who was ruled out with a concussion.

It looks like another busy week for the Commanders on the waiver wire.

Commanders make a pair of roster moves Tuesday

The Commanders added another defensive tackle Tuesday, this time to the practice squad.

Losing defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis Sunday has resulted in two more transactions Tuesday by the Washington Commanders.

Washington signed DT Benning Potoa’e to the practice squad. To make room for Potoa’e, Washington released S Ferrod Gardner from the practice squad.

Mathis was the Commanders’ second-round draft choice in April’s draft. A former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Mathis was excited to be drafted by Washington and to learn from Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

Mathis went down Sunday on the first play of Jacksonville’s second possession, having torn his meniscus and, after an MRI Monday, was ruled out for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Losing Mathis so early in the contest, inside tackles Payne and Allen were in on 55 and 54 defensive snaps respectively. Daniel Wise (6-3,279) played on 30 defensive snaps inside, and the Commanders were forced to use Efe Obada (6-6, 265) inside as well.

The Commanders brass fully aware they need more size have now obtained Potoa’e (6-3, 290) Tuesday and Donovan Jeter (6-3, 325) Monday. Potoa’e played his college ball at the University of Washington. He appeared in one game for Tampa Bay in 2020 and then again in 2021. Jeter went undrafted out of Michigan, was signed by the Steelers, and played in all three preseason games before being cut.

Gardner (age 25) at 6’1”, 215 pounds, played linebacker at Louisiana. The Commanders were hoping to develop him as a strong safety. Perhaps with the size, they were hoping to see if he could develop into a Buffalo nickel role such as Landon Collins did in 2021.

Washington activates Cam Sims, Daniel Wise from COVID-19 list

Cam Sims and Daniel Wise are activated from reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Washington Football Team received more good news Sunday morning when wide receiver Cam Sims and defensive lineman Daniel Wise were activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Washington still has 16 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, including top quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.

Sims had his best game of the season in the Week 14 loss to the Cowboys. He finished with three receptions for 69 yards and this incredible touchdown reception, which should be a contender for catch of the year.

Wise has seen his snaps increase in the last four games, including playing a career-high 70 snaps in Week 14 vs. Cowboys.

The league updated the COVID-19 protocols over the weekend, allowing asymptomatic vaccinated players not to be tested.

If Heinicke or Allen can’t clear protocols in the next 24 hours, it’s likely Washington starts new signee Garrett Gilbert at quarterback. Washington signed Gilbert off the Patriots’ practice squad Friday. Learn more about Gilbert here.

Washington activates WR Cam Sims, DE Daniel Wise from reserve/COVID-19 list

#WashingtonFootball has activated wide receiver Cam Sims, defensive end Daniel Wise from the reserve/COVID-19 list for Tuesday’s matchup against the Philadelphia #Eagles #FlyEaglesFly

The Washington Football Team is adding more depth for Tuesday night’s matchup, activating wide receiver Cam Sims, and defensive end, Daniel Wise, from the reserve-COVID-19 list.

Washington activated four defensive linemen on Saturday, including stars Jonathan Allen and Montez Sweat.

Sims and the rest of the Washington players are returning from the COVID list as the league updated protocols, now allowing asymptomatic vaccinated players to not be tested at all.

Washington will spend the next day or so being hopeful that starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke or backup, Kyle Allen will also be activated.
