Montez Sweat will not play in Week 17 vs. Eagles

Montez Sweat is out vs. Eagles.

Washington defensive end Montez Sweat will not play in the WFT’s regular-season home finale against the Eagles. Sweat’s older brother, Anthony, was fatally shot last week and Sweat missed practice to be with his family.

Sweat, in his third season out of Mississippi State, has 22 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 games this season. Sweat was injured in a Week 8 loss at Denver when he fractured his jaw. He would miss the next four Washington games. Sweat would then test positive for COVID-19 and miss the Week 14 game against the Cowboys.

Sweat returned in the Week 15 game at Philadelphia, recording a sack and forcing a fumble.

Washington’s final game is on the road against the Giants in Week 18.

Washington releases WR Antonio Gandy-Golden

Washington made several roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Eagles, including the release of a former fourth-round pick.

In preparation for Sunday’s Week 17 game against Philadelphia, the Washington Football Team made several roster moves Saturday, including releasing 2020 fourth-round draft choice WR Antonio Gandy-Golden.

Washington believed they had obtained a receiver with size and one who could be a real threat in the red zone, when they drafted the 6-foot-4 Gandy-Golden out of Liberty University.

However, AGG in 2020 was targeted only seven times for one reception, and in this 2021 season, the former Liberty Flames receiver appeared in only four games (weeks 5-8) He only saw action on 8, 3, 6 and 3 snaps and was not targeted a single time. AGG is the first WFT draft choice from the 2020 draft to be released.

The club also announced offensive line coach John Matsko will miss Sunday’s game due to COVID-19 protocols and assistant offensive line coach Travelle Wharton will replace Matsko.

They also elevated G Deion Calhoun and P Ryan Winslow from the practice squad.

The other roster moves made Saturday:

Washington places Antonio Gibson and Ereck Flowers on reserve/COVID-19 list

Washington places Antonio Gibson and Ereck Flowers on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Four starters in two days added to the COVID list.

It looks like both Washington and Philadelphia will be without their starting running backs ahead of Sunday’s NFC East showdown at FedEx Field. Eagles’ running back, Miles Sanders, is out of Sunday’s game with a broken hand.

Washington has placed its starting running back, Antonio Gibson, on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Gibson is the third Washington starter in the last two days to go on the reserve/COVID list, joining offensive tackle Sam Cosmi and punter Tress Way.

Gibson currently sits at 891 rushing yards on the season. Overall, it’s been a frustrating season for the second-year running back. After a run of four games in which he ran for 358 yards and helped Washington on a four-game winning streak, Gibson has run the ball 31 times for 91 yards in the WFT’s current three-game losing streak.

He’s battled numerous injuries this season, including shin and hip injuries, but has played in every game. Washington’s running game has been inconsistent due to the number of injuries along the offensive line. Brandon Scherff has missed six games — Washington has lost every game. Cosmi has missed seven games, while Washington is currently on its fourth center, having lost Chase Roullier for the season in Week 8.

Washington also placed starting left guard Ereck Flowers on the COVID list. Left tackle Charles Leno and Flowers have been the only offensive linemen to remain healthy throughout the season. Flowers has been outstanding in his return to Washington.

Jaret Patterson will likely receive the bulk of carries for Washington, with Wendell Smallwood and Jonathan Williams also playing a role. Washington has been without J.D. McKissic since after a Week 12 win over Seattle.

Sam Cosmi, Tress Way placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Tress Way and Sam Cosmi are the latest Washington players added to reserve/COVID-19 list.

COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the Washington Football Team as the team placed three more players on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday.

Right tackle Sam Cosmi, punter Tress Way and practice squad quarterback Kyle Shurmur were all added to the COVID list.

So, Washington will likely have a new punter Sunday for the first time since 2013. Way has punted in every game for Washington since signing before the 2014 season. The former Pro Bowler is averaging 49.2 yards per punt this season.

This is the latest setback for Cosmi, the rookie second-round pick from Texas. He’s spent time on injured reserve, dealing with ankle and hip injuries and has missed seven games this season. When he’s played, he’s played well.

Fortunately for Washington, it has reliable veteran Cornelius Lucas to move back into the starting lineup.

Washington activated defensive end Nate Orchard from the reserve/COVID list Thursday. Practice squad guard Zack Bailey was also activated from the reserve/COVID list.

Washington inactive players vs. Cowboys

Washington’s Week 16 inactive list contains more bad news.

The inactive list is in for the Washington Football Team’s Week 16 game at Dallas. It features more bad news for Washington.

Washington (6-8) listed seven players inactive, including rookie linebacker Jamin Davis. Here is Washington’s list of inactives:

  • WR Curtis Samuel
  • WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
  • QB Garrett Gilbert
  • K Brian Johnson
  • LB Jamin Davis
  • CB William Jackson III
  • CB Corn Elder

The most notable names on this list are Jackson and Davis. Both are starters, and it’s especially troublesome for Washington’s linebackers who are already without Cole Holcomb (COVID-19), Landon Collins (IR-foot) and Khaleke Hudson (IR). That means Washington’s linebackers for Week 16 are David Mayo, Jordan Kunaszyk, Milo Eifler and De’Jon Harris.

Jackson is out after injuring his calf in Tuesday’s loss at Philadelphia. Washington will likely feature a safety-heavy lineup of Bobby McCain, Kam Curl and Jeremy Reaves to make up for the depth issues.

Joey Slye was recently activated from IR and is back as the primary kicker. Brian Johnson remains on the roster and is inactive for Week 16.

It’s no surprise Curtis Samuel is inactive. It’s the most predictable portion of Washington’s week. Samuel should’ve been placed on IR months ago.

Final score predictions for Washington vs. Cowboys

Staff predictions for Washington vs. Cowboys in Week 16.

The Washington Football Team faces the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in a rematch from Week 14. The Cowboys won the first meeting, 27-20, after jumping out to a 24-0 lead at halftime.

What happens in the rematch?

Here are Washington Wire’s staff projections for Week 16.

Bryan Manning

Washington enters Sunday night without Landon Collins, Brandon Scherff, Cole Holcomb and William Jackson III, in addition to the others already on injured reserve. Against a team as talented as the Cowboys, that’s just too much to overcome.

While I don’t believe Washington starts as slowly as it did in Week 14, the Cowboys have a lot to play for, such as the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC.

Cowboys 30, Washington 20

Ivan Lambert

In the last meeting of these two teams two weeks ago, the Dallas defensive front seven exhibited they are much more athletic and quicker than Washington could endure.

To be direct, it was ugly.

Washington must generate some sort of running game between the tackles.

Perhaps they should also attempt more first down safe, quick passes, seeking to avoid 3rd and longs they experienced two weeks ago.

Yet, injuries along the offensive line won’t help.

Who the experts are taking in Washington vs. Cowboys

As expected, most of the experts are picking the Cowboys in Week 16.

The Washington Football Team looks to get back on track in Week 16’s rematch vs. the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. After the Cowboys snapped Washington’s four-game winning streak two weeks ago, Washington has now lost two games in a row.

Sunday’s rematch is all about staying in the race for the NFC’s final wild-card spot for Washington. As for Dallas, it can clinch the NFC East with either a win or a Philadelphia loss.

So, both teams have a lot to play for Sunday night at AT&T Stadium.

Unfortunately for Washington, it will be without several key performers. Safety Landon Collins and running back J.D. McKissic were placed on injured reserve last week, while cornerback William Jackson III will miss the game. Washington could also be without All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and linebacker Cole Holcomb.

The Cowboys jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first meeting. However, Washington slowly climbed back into the game in the second half before coming up short in a 27-20 loss.

Who wins the rematch?

According to the experts, via NFL Pickwatch, 97% of the picks are for Dallas. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Washington has been the underdog for most of its games this season.

Washington’s performance in the first meeting and all the team has lost in recent weeks means the Cowboys are the smart choice for Week 16.

Washington vs. Cowboys Week 16 How to watch, listen and stream online

Everything you need to watch or listen to Washington vs. Cowboys in Week 15, including TV, radio and streaming options.

Only two weeks ago, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to FedEx Field to face a red-hot Washington Football Team. The Cowboys, 8-4 at the time, were two games ahead of surging Washington. A WFT win would’ve meant a real NFC East battle was unfolding.

Unfortunately for Washington, the Cowboys jumped on the WFT early, going into halftime with a 24-0 lead. Washington fought back in the second half, but the hole was too deep, and the Cowboys left the D.C. area with a 27-20 win. The race for the NFC East was all but over.

Since that time, Washington has continued to battle injuries, in addition to close to 30 players spending time on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

For the rematch, this is about survival for Washington. As for Dallas, it has already clinched a playoff berth, but it still has plenty to play for as a win Sunday means the Cowboys officially win the NFC East with two games remaining.

Washington makes multiple roster moves ahead of Week 16 game vs. Cowboys

Washington made several roster moves ahead of Sunday night’s game vs. Cowboys.

The Washington Football Team will be shorthanded again for Sunday night’s game at Dallas. In preparation for the rematch against the Cowboys, the WFT made a flurry of moves ahead of Sunday’s game.

Washington currently has six players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, including two extremely important starts in Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff and top linebacker Cole Holcomb. While Scherff and Holcomb could be activated ahead of Sunday night’s game, Washington is preparing for life without the two starters.

On Saturday, Washington activated running back Wendell Smallwood from the reserve/COVID-19 list, giving Washington four running backs for Sunday’s game. According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, starter Antonio Gibson traveled with the team. Gibson is listed as questionable for the game.

The WFT activated kicker Joey Slye from injured reserve. That leaves Washington with two kickers on the 53-man roster. Washington likes both Slye and Brian Johnson.

Washington elevated Smallwood and veteran cornerback D.J. Hayden from the practice squad. In addition, Washington promoted safety Jeremy Reaves and linebacker De’Jon Harris as COVID-19 replacements. Reaves was active and played almost the entire game last week.
