Chiefs sign DL Daniel Wise on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have brought back DL Daniel Wise, but this time on a reserve/future contract.

Even with Super Bowl LVII just a week away, the Kansas City Chiefs front office staff remains hard at work, focusing on building out the 90-man offseason roster.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Friday, the team has signed defensive lineman Daniel Wise on a reserve/future contract. The Chiefs actually signed Wise to the practice squad for about two weeks in January before cutting him loose. We reported back then that it was likely he’d return on a reserve/future deal and here we are.

The Chiefs have had their eyes on Wise for a long time, meeting with the former Kansas Jayhawk extensively at the East-West Shrine Game ahead of the 2019 NFL draft. He went undrafted in 2019 and has since spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. For the past two seasons, he stuck with the Washington Commanders, appearing in 17 games with two starts during that span. At 6-3 and 285 pounds, Wise is a player with inside/outside versatility on the defensive line.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, Wise will not be eligible to participate in the Super Bowl. He won’t officially join the team until the new league year begins in March when teams are permitted to expand roster size to 90 players for the 2023 NFL offseason.

Wise is now the third player the Chiefs have signed to a reserve/future contract for 2023. He joins former Bengals first-round draft pick John Ross and former Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle.

Chiefs sign former Bengals first-rounder John Ross on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have signed former #Bengals first-round pick John Ross to a reserve/future contract, per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are wasting no time when it comes to adding receivers for the 2023 NFL season.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs have signed form Bengals WR John Ross III on a reserve/future contract. Ross was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, selected one spot before the team traded up to grab Patrick Mahomes. The former Washington Huskies wideout notably ran the fastest 40-yard dash time in NFL Scouting Combine history (4.22s).

Ross, 27, spent just four seasons in Cincinnati appearing in just 27 games with 20 starts. During that span, Ross recorded just 51 receptions for 733 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Ross last played during the 2021 NFL season, appearing in 10 games with the New York Giants. He caught 11 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown that season. One of the big concerns about Ross has been his injury history as he missed time during his career with knee, shoulder and foot injuries.

Ross is the second player reported to have been signed to a reserve/future deal by the Chiefs following former Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle. They also worked out former Alabama WR Slade Bolden and BC Lions QB Nathan Rourke on Monday.

Chiefs sign TE Josh Pederson on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have signed the son of #Jaguars HC Doug Pederson to a reserve/future contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed another tight end to a reserve/future contract after having him in for a workout a week ago.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice for Friday, the Chiefs have signed TE Josh Pederson on a reserve/future deal. This is a notable signing because Josh is the son of former Chiefs assistant coach and new Jaguars HC Doug Pederson.

A First-Team All-Sun Belt tight end at Louisiana Monroe, Josh appeared in 44 games with 33 starts during his 5-year career, recording 99 catches for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite his productive collegiate career, the 6-5 and 235-pound tight end went undrafted following the 2021 NFL draft. He caught on with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent during the offseason, but he was released during 53-man roster cuts. He signed with the New Orleans Saints shortly after his departure from San Francisco, but he didn’t last too long on their roster.

The Chiefs have already signed four tight ends to reserve/future contracts ahead of the 2022 offseason. That group includes Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Mark Vital, Matt Bushman and Jordan Franks. They have two players at the position — Blake Bell (unrestricted) and Jody Fortson (exclusive rights) — slated to become free agents in March.

Pederson should have the opportunity to compete this offseason, but the Chiefs are clearly looking to make it a competition with all of the depth they’ve added so far.

Chiefs sign LB Shilique Calhoun on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have re-signed practice squad LB/DE Shilique Calhoun on a reserve/future contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a player who spent some time on their practice squad during the 2021 NFL season.

According to the league’s personnel notice for Wednesday, the Chiefs signed LB/DE Shilique Calhoun to a reserve/future contract. Calhoun was a former third-round draft pick by the Las Vegas Raiders out of Michigan State in 2018. The 6-4 and 260-pound defender has bounced around the league, spending time with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.

Calhoun signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad back in early November after trying out with the team. He actually had two tackles against Kansas City during the preseason this year when he was with the 49ers, but didn’t see any action during the regular season with the Chiefs. He was a practice squad protection ahead of Week 15 as the team had some injury and COVID issues they were dealing with. A few weeks later ahead of the divisional round of the playoffs, Calhoun was among four players released from the practice squad by Kansas City.

As we predicted back then, it wasn’t the end for some of those players. Both Calhoun and Nakia Griffin-Stewart are now back with the team. When the new league year begins in March, they’ll officially become part of the 90-man offseason roster.

Bringing in competitive depth is important for the Chiefs as they turn the page to 2022. Adding players like Calhoun and Griffin-Stewart, who already know the system, will only increase competition heading into the offseason.
