Colts sign 7 draft picks from 2023 class

Seven of the Colts’ draft picks are now under contract.

The Indianapolis Colts signed seven of their selections from the 2023 NFL draft, the team announced Friday.

With the rookie minicamp starting up, the majority of the Day 3 picks are now under contract. Only five of the draft picks remain unsigned, and sometimes this process takes a little time for the players with higher draft capital.

It just so happens that these seven players are the final seven players selected in the draft for the Colts.

Here’s a look at the seven draft picks who signed their rookie deals Friday:

The Indianapolis Colts made it clear they were going to target elite athletes during the 2023 NFL draft, and that narrative was furthered with the selection of safety Daniel Scott in the fifth round.

A 25-year-old rookie, Scott will be competing for the final spot in the safety room. He brings elite athleticism, high character and plenty of special teams experience.

Introducing the Colts’ 2023 NFL draft class

Colts fans, here is your 2023 NFL draft class!

The Indianapolis Colts have concluded their selections in the 2023 NFL draft, and now we can sit back and look at the class in its entirety.

Looking to reset the organization, the Colts brought in a potential franchise quarterback in the form of Anthony Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick. After addressing some major needs on Day 2, the Colts added a ridiculous amount of depth with elite athletes across the roster.

In total, there were 12 selections overall—a record for general manager Chris Ballard. That broke the previous record during Ballard’s tenure from the 2018 class (11).

From the QB1 to their final pick in the seventh round, here is the 2023 draft class for the Colts:

Here’s our instant analysis of the Colts drafting S Daniel Scott.

The Indianapolis Colts selected California safety Daniel Scott with the No. 158 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Scott was on the Colts’ radar throughout the pre-draft process, and he profiles as the type of prospect the front office likes to target on Day 3. With Julian Blackmon in a contract year, adding depth to the position was necessary.

What the Colts are getting in S Daniel Scott

What the Colts are getting in S Daniel Scott.

The Indianapolis Colts are getting into the portion of the NFL draft where teams are looking for players that have the traits to develop into a starter or can be a role player, providing value on special teams. The latest addition comes out of California with safety Daniel Scott.

Traits on traits on traits are what Chris Ballard has continued to do in the 2023 draft with this selection. Scott’s three-cone and short shuttle times were the best numbers among all safety prospects at the combine.

He also offers great-to-elite athletic testing numbers and his RAS score ranks as the seventh-best for safeties since 1987.

Scott brings some versatility as a safety, he can play in the slot, as a deep safety, and can play up within the box.

Scott does a good job reading the quarterback’s eyes when he sits back in coverage.

He can improve on processing routes when in coverage because he can get shaken out of his cleats. He can be better in run support by taking proper angles.

Scott doesn’t need to come in to be a starter for the Colts but he can develop into one of their core special teamers. A team captain, he earned special teams MVP during his college career and has vast experience playing on the unit.

It can help him make the final roster come August. Indianapolis is getting a versatile athletic safety that can make the team because of his special teams value.

2023 NFL draft: Best available prospects for Giants on Day 3

As we enter Day 3 of the 2023 NFL draft, here are some of the best available prospects for the New York Giants (who will have four picks).

The New York Giants were very active over the first two days of the 2023 NFL draft, making a pair of trades and acquiring three top players and potential starters.

Because of general manager Joe Schoen’s wheeling and dealing, the Giants have just four picks remaining over the final four rounds. Their next pick does not come until No. 172 overall (Round 5). However, don’t rule out another trade up.

Here are some of the best available prospects for Big Blue on Day 3.

49ers 2023 prospect watch: Cal S Daniel Scott checks plenty of boxes

Cal’s Daniel Scott is a really interesting player, and the 49ers met with him virtually before the draft.

The 49ers could use some help at free safety in this year’s draft. One option is a local product who can do a little bit of everything. Cal’s Daniel Scott is a fascinating player in a relatively shallow safety class, and the 49ers held a virtual meeting with him recently per the Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

Scott has all of the athletic traits necessary to man the free safety spot for San Francisco. He has good size at 6-foot, 208 pounds, and his 4.45 speed shows on tape. It’s easy to see how he’d plug in alongside Talanoa Hufanga in the back end of the 49ers’ defense.

One of the biggest knocks on Scott, and maybe the biggest reason he’ll slide in the draft, is his age. He’ll turn 25 early in his rookie season. Plus there are some questions about his ability to hang out near the line of scrimmage and cover in the NFL, but that’s where new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks – a defensive backs coach for much of his coaching career – can help out.

The bottom line is Scott can play. Betting on an experienced safety with good size, speed and athleticism makes a ton of sense. Not to mention he posted 207 tackles, three forced fumbles, seven interceptions and 14 pass breakups in 49 games with the Golden Bears.

If the 49ers wait until after the third round to snag a safety, Scott would be a fine selection who could conceivably be a long-term at answer at a position where San Francisco doesn’t presently have one.

California safety Daniel Scott met with the Commanders

Daniel Scott brings athleticism and experience, plenty of experience, to the NFL.

In an interview with Justin Melo of The Draft Network, California safety Daniel Scott revealed he’d met with the Washington Commanders via Zoom.

While the Commanders — and most teams — took advantage of the Zoom meetings, scheduling as many as allowed, you can see the intrigue between the Commanders and Scott.

The first thing that stands out is Scott’s experience. Scott played six seasons at Cal, serving as a team captain and earning All-PAC-12 honors in 2022. Over the course of his career, he appeared in 49 games, making 28 starts.

For Washington head coach Ron Rivera, he loves battle-tested college players who can contribute immediately. Rivera likes players with a high floor, especially with day-three picks, which Scott will be in this week’s draft.

Oh, and did we mention that Rivera is a graduate of Cal?

Therefore, Rivera knows all about what Scott can do.

At the NFL combine, Scott measured in at 6-foot-1 and 208 pounds. He was timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, with a vertical jump of 39.5.”

Scott’s testing numbers, combined with his experience and versatility at Cal, make him an interesting potential choice for the Commanders on Saturday’s day three of the NFL draft.

Colts had pre-draft virtual meeting with S Daniel Scott

Daniel Scott posted the best three-cone and short shuttle among safeties at the NFL combine.

The Indianapolis Colts held a virtual meeting over Zoom with California safety Daniel Scott ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Likely a position the Colts will target on Day 3 if they want to add some depth, Scott brings some intriguing athleticism to the field between his speed and explosiveness.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

He told Justin Melo of The Draft Network of the top-30 visits and virtual meetings he had during the pre-draft process, and the Colts fell into the latter group.

At 6-foot-0 and 208 pounds, Scott is entering the league as a sixth-year senior. He redshirted his freshman season in 2017 and didn’t become a starter until 2021. He was a team captain in 2022 and attended the Senior Bowl. Scott will be 25 years old halfway through his rookie season.

An exceptional athlete, Scott posted a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash (1.52 10-yard split) along with a 39.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-8-inch broad jump. He also spent time on the special teams unit, winning the special team’s MVP award in 2019.

He brings versatility to the position as a rangy free safety with the ability to play closer to the line of scrimmage, but his advanced age and lack of production and playing time until late in his career will knock his draft stock.

With six selections on Day 3 of the draft, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Colts added this athletic safety to the room with one of those picks.

1 safety for the Vikings for every round of the 2023 NFL draft

The Minnesota Vikings are relatively strong at safety, but they could target one during the NFL Draft.

As the NFL Draft approaches, the Minnesota Vikings must address several needs, especially at wide receiver and cornerback positions.

Currently, the Vikings have Harrison Smith and Cam Bynum and in last year’s draft, they selected safety Lewis Cine in the first round. Those three make it unlikely for the team to prioritize selecting another safety early on or at all.

It’s still important to examine the safety draft class. Let’s take one safety option for the Vikings in each round of the draft.
