Quarterback Ben DiNucci has officially signed with the team. It was previously reported the Bills intended to sign the 27-year-old and now it has happened.

In addition to the QB addition, two receivers new receivers will now suit up for Buffalo: Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain.

In corresponding moves, quarterback Shane Buechele (neck) and receiver Chase Claypool (toe) were placed on injured reserve. Wideout Bryan Thompson (undisclosed) was also waived/ injured.

DiNucci, 27, was most recently with the Denver Broncos. He was waived in May. He was out of the NFL for the 2022 season but played with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons.

DiNucci was a seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. DiNucci’s lone start in the NFL came during his rookie year. He threw for 180 yards in a 23-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bryd, 31, has played eight seasons in the NFL. He was most recently with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, but only appeared in one game. The 5-foot-9 target had his best season in 2020 with the New England Patriots, hauling in 47 catches for 604 yards and a touchdown.

The latter team meaning he crossed paths with members of the Bills coaching staff in Carolina, including head coach Sean McDermott and offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Commanders sign WR Damiere Byrd

The Commanders sign a WR with ties to Kliff Kingsbury.

The Commanders signed a veteran wide receiver on Wednesday.

After working out some receivers on Wednesday, the Commanders determined that they would be signing Damiere Byrd, per Tom Pelissero.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound veteran played his college ball at South Carolina and was undrafted. He was signed first by Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers.

Three seasons in Carolina (2016-18) resulted in 12 receptions for 129 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Why did the Commanders go with Byrd? A very logical explanation may be that Byrd has playing experience under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. In 2019, Byrd spent one season with the Cardinals and Kingsbury. He was on the receiving end of 32 passes for 359 yards and one touchdown.

2020 Byrd enjoyed career highs when he caught 47 passes for 604 receiving yards playing for the New England Patriots.

Byrd caught 26 passes for 329 yards in 2021 for the Chicago Bears before moving again, this time to the Atlanta Falcons for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. 13 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns came in the first season in Atlanta, but only two targets (no receptions) came in his lone game last season.

Here are some big plays receiving and returning by Byrd.

The eight-year veteran turned age 31 in January and is hoping to make the Commanders his sixth NFL team. He will be in a battle with Kazmeir Allen, Dyami Brown, Jamison Crowder, Davion Davis, Dax Milne, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Mitchell Tinsley, Brycen Tremayne and Olamide Zaccheaus for roster spots.

The Commanders really need a few of these receivers to step up this offseason and preseason, as only Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Luke McCaffrey are sure bets to be on the 53-man roster.

Former Panthers WR Damiere Byrd signing with Commanders

Former Panthers WR Damiere Byrd has landed in the nation’s capital.

Ron Rivera may be out from the nation’s capital, but perhaps Marty Hurney still has some pull within the Washington Commanders organization.

As first reported by Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Wednesday, the Commanders are signing former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Damiere Byrd.

Byrd initially joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of South Carolina in 2015. His first stint with the team lasted for three seasons, a run yielded 12 receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns over 17 games.

He’d move on to four different teams over the next four seasons—picking up stops with the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons between 2019 and 2022.

The 30-year-old pass catcher rejoined the Panthers on a one-year deal last spring. Byrd would then be released in late August after sustaining a hamstring injury.

His most recent stop came with the Houston Texans, whom he joined during their playoff run this past January.

Giants workout quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Ian Book

The New York Giants worked out seven players on Monday, including quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Ian Book.

The New York Giants held workouts in East Rutherford on Monday, just as they do every week throughout the regular season.

Among those who attended were quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Ian Book, along with wide receiver Damiere Byrd.

The presence of Barkley and Book obviously raised eyebrows given that Giants quarterback Daniel Jones missed a Week 6 game due to a neck injury. During the broadcast, it was revealed that Jones was feeling discomfort down into his shoulder.

That news immediately set off a flurry of speculation with some Internet doctors postulating that Jones either needs surgery or may be dealing with a long-term issue. Of course, none of that is confirmed and there are reports circulating that the Giants are optimistic Jones returns against the Washington Commanders this Sunday.

Given that the Giants regularly work out positional groups, it’s possible that  Barkley and Book being in attendance is merely a coincidence.

The 33-year-old Barkley was a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2013 NFL draft. He quickly became a journeyman, making stops with nine different teams over his 11-year career, including two stints with the Buffalo Bills.

The 25-year-old Book was a fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2021. He also played for the Eagles and spent a week on the New England Patriots practice squad earlier this year.

Byrd, 30, signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2015. He has appeared in 75 career games.

In addition to those three players, the Giants also worked out wide receivers Jalen Camp and Kyric McGowan, running back Hassan Hall, and tight end Eric Saubert.

None of the players were immediately signed by the Giants.

Former Panthers WR Damiere Byrd knew Patriots would claim Matt Corral

Former Panthers WR Damiere Byrd probably wasn’t shocked when his former boss picked up his former teammate on Thursday.

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Damiere Byrd is also former New England Patriots wide receiver Damiere Byrd. So, he knows a thing or two about Bill Belichick.

Byrd, in fact, had a feeling that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach was going to claim an old teammate of his . . .

On Thursday, the Patriots hit up the waiver wire to claim Corral—who was let go by the Panthers the previous afternoon. And even despite waiving the 24-year-old quarterback, both head coach Frank Reich and general manager Scott Fitterer were hoping to get him back in the building.

Alas, Belichick did the Belichick thing and swooped in on the player he helped get to Carolina in the first place. The Panthers’ trade-up for the Ole Miss star in the 2022 draft was facilitated by New England, who gave up the 94th overall pick in exchange for 137th selection and a 2023 third-rounder.

Fast forward just over a year later and the Patriots have every single part of that deal—Corral, Bailey Zappe and linebacker Marte Mapu. And Byrd, who probably wasn’t the only one who sensed the move, apparently knew it all along.

Panthers release Damiere Byrd with injury settlement

The Panthers have released WR Damiere Byrd with an injury settlement.

Damiere Byrd’s second flight in Charlotte has come to an end.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston on Friday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers have officially reached an injury settlement with the 30-year-old wideout. This now releases Byrd from the injured reserve list, making him a free agent.

Byrd sustained what head coach Frank Reich described as a “significant” hamstring injury during training camp. He was placed on IR on Aug. 16, clearing way for the team to then sign defensive back Collin Duncan.

The well-documented speedster first joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of South Carolina in 2015. He’d go on to spend his first three NFL seasons in Carolina, reeling in 12 receptions for 129 yards and a a pair of touchdowns over 17 games.

His next four years resulted in four different stops—with the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. He returned to the organization on a one-year deal this past spring.
