Packers re-sign CB Robert Rochell

The Packers re-signed cornerback Robert Rochell.

The Green Bay Packers re-signed cornerback Robert Rochell, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Rochell, who turns 26 next month, played in nine games for the Packers last season. The 2021 fourth-round pick was claimed off of waivers from the Carolina Panthers in October.

Overall, Rochell played 112 snaps on special teams and made four special teams tackles across his nine appearances for the Packers in 2023.

Rochell played four different special teams groups: punt coverage, punt return, kickoff coverage and kick return. He didn’t have a penalty or a missed tackle.

Rochell, who became an unrestricted free agent after the Packers passed on offering a restricted tender, is the sixth player with an expiring contract to re-sign with the Packers, joining tight end Tyler Davis, cornerback Keisean Nixon, cornerback Corey Ballentine, running back A.J. Dillon and linebacker Kristian Welch.

22 former Panthers on this year’s Divisional Round rosters

Here are 22 names from this weekend’s Divisional Round action that Panthers fans may recognize

While the Carolina Panthers are busy trying to find a new power duo, quite a few of their former players are right in the middle of playoff action.

Here are 22 ex-Panthers who are gearing up for this year’s Divisional Round games:

Packers sign Robert Rochell, 2021 fourth-round pick, to bolster CB depth

The Packers signed CB Robert Rochell, a 2021 fourth-round pick who is an elite athlete.

The Green Bay Packers signed a 2021 fourth-round pick off of the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad to help bolster depth at the cornerback position entering Week 8.

On Wednesday, the team announced the signing of cornerback Robert Rochell, the 130th overall pick in the 2021 draft who has played in 28 games since entering the NFL. He is an elite athlete, mostly played on the perimeter for the Rams and has special teams experience.

Here’s the breakdown of Rochell from Rams Wire managing editor Cameron Dasilva: “He’s a big, athletic corner who was raw coming out of college but never really improved or came close to hitting his ceiling. He didn’t have the quickness to mirror receivers’ routes and his ball skills didn’t show up when he was targeted. The Rams dealt with a ton of injuries last season and still didn’t give Rochell much of a chance to play in his second season.”

Rochell (6-2, 195) played in 11 games as a rookie and all 17 games in 2022 for the Rams. He started five games in 2021 and produced four pass breakups and an interception over 234 snaps. In 2022, Rochell played just 26 snaps on defense but was on the field for 325 special teams snaps, or 75 percent of the Rams’ total last season.

Per PFF, Rochell missed three tackles and gave up 13 catches for 176 yards and one touchdown pass on 20 targets as a rookie. His passer rating against was 88.1, and he committed just one penalty.

As a core special teamer for the Rams in 2022, Rochell made four tackles but also missed six others, and he committed two penalties. He played on five of the six special teams groupings: kickoff coverage, punt coverage, kickoff return, punt return and field goal block.

Most of Rochell’s snaps, even dating back to college, have come on the perimeter, limiting his versatility to play in the slot. But playing within schemes in Los Angeles and Carolina should help ease the transition to what the Packers run in Green Bay.

The Rams released Rochell during final cuts in August. He spent three weeks on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks and had been on the practice squad of the Panthers since Sept. 20 when the Packers signed him.

His athleticism is certainly one reason to believe in the potential. Rochell’s Relative Athletic Score coming out of Central Arkansas was 9.65 out of 10.0. While on the smaller side, Rochell produced elite jumping numbers, an elite 40-yard dash and elite numbers in the agility drills.

Now in Green Bay, Rochell will have to develop into more than just an athlete. Technique was a big question mark for Rochell coming out of Arkansas State. Passing game coordinator Greg Williams and defensive backs coach Ryan Downard will be tasked with teaching Rochell the techniques necessary for playing in Joe Barry’s zone-heavy defense.

The Packers needed depth at cornerback with Jaire Alexander battling a back injury that has kept him out of three of the last four games and Eric Stokes going on injured reserve after injuring his hamstring in his season debut on Sunday in Denver. Rochell joins Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Keisean Nixon, rookie Carrington Valentine and practice-squad signing Corey Ballentine as the six cornerbacks on Green Bay’s roster.

Rochell was an All-Southland Conference selection in 2019 after intercepting five passes and breaking up 13 others. He participated in the Senior Bowl before the 2021 draft.

Packers sign CB Robert Rochell off Panthers practice squad

The Packers have signed CB Robert Rochell away from the Panthers’ practice squad.

Just when the Carolina Panthers got their practice squad back to a full 16 players, another man has been poached.

As announced on Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Robert Rochell away from the Panthers’ practice squad and onto their active roster. This is the second player who has been signed off of Carolina’s squad this week, as running back Jashaun Corbin returned to the New York Giants on Monday.

Rochell joined the Panthers back on Sept. 20, along with linebacker Deion Jones. He had not appeared in a game for the team during his month-long stint.

Prior to his stop in Charlotte, Rochell was a fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams out of the University of Central Arkansas in 2021. He’d spend some time there with current Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and secondary/cornerbacks coach Jonathan Cooley, both of whom served under head coach Sean McVay.

The Panthers, who signed quarterback Jake Luton and tight end Jordan Matthews to their practice squad this morning, now have one open spot in the group.

Panthers’ updated practice squad after Wednesday’s moves

The Panthers added two new, but familiar faces to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers created two vacancies on their practice squad earlier this afternoon.

Their call-up of linebacker Deion Jones to the active roster produced the first, one which would be filled by quarterback Jake Luton. The second came as a swap of cornerbacks, with Mark Milton clearing out for former Los Angeles Ram Robert Rochell.

Here’s an updated look at the 16-man squad:

Panthers add Deion Jones to active roster

After losing LB Shaq Thompson, the Panthers have added former Pro Bowler Deion Jones to their active roster.

The Carolina Panthers needed some help in the middle of their defense following the devastating, and likely season-ending, injury to Shaq Thompson. So, they officially added it on Wednesday.

As announced by the team, linebacker Deion Jones has been brought up to the active roster. He had been a member of the practice squad for the past week, signing back to the locker room on Sept. 11.

Jones first joined the Panthers as a free agent during the summer. But, in a bit of a surprise, the former Pro Bowler was released during the team’s cutdown to their initial 53-man roster.

Head coach Frank Reich offered a bit of insight into how the defense may go about replacing Thompson, who underwent successful surgery on his fibula on Tuesday.

“Kamu [Grugier-Hill] played very well,” he said this afternoon. “So, he’s gonna get a lot of play. We might rotate some through. We’re gonna continue to evaluate that. Kamu is also such a great special teams contributor. So we just gotta weight out how we’re gonna approach that.”

Quarterback Jake Luton, who also spent the offseason with Carolina, was signed into Jones’ vacant spot on the practice squad.

The Panthers also swapped out cornerbacks within the group—releasing Mark Milton and signing former Los Angeles Ram Robert Rochell.

Seahawks sign former Rams CB Robert Rochell to practice squad

Robert Rochell is getting a change of scenery after the Rams cut him, landing with their division rivals in Seattle

The Los Angeles Rams selected Robert Rochell in the fourth round of the 2021 draft but his tenure with the team only lasted two seasons. The Rams cut Rochell this week as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players, which came as a surprise, but he didn’t have to wait very long to find a new team.

After Rochell cleared waivers, the Seahawks signed him to their practice squad. So he’ll now get another shot to prove himself with a second NFC West team after his time in Los Angeles came to an unexpected end after only two years.

Rochell went No. 130 overall in the 2021 draft out of Central Arkansas, and he was perceived to be a sleeper at the position that year. He has all the size and athleticism that a team would want in a cornerback but his coverage skills and tackling must improve if he’s going to make it in the NFL.

Salary cap impact of Rams cutting Logan Bruss and Robert Rochell

Here’s how much dead money the Rams will take on after cutting Logan Bruss and Robert Rochell

Two of the biggest surprise cuts by the Rams on Tuesday were Logan Bruss and Robert Rochell. They were among the team’s final cuts, along with Tyler Johnson, which suggests it was a tough call for the Rams to make.

Bruss was just a third-round pick in 2022, while Rochell was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft. Now, both players are off the 53-man roster. It’s not only a tough look for the organization to part with two relatively early picks, but there’s also a financial cost of cutting them.

According to Over The Cap, the Rams will take on nearly $1 million in total dead money the next two years as a result of cutting Bruss and Rochell. Here’s a breakdown of each player’s dead cap hit in 2023 and 2024; they’re the only two Rams players with dead cap hits in 2024 right now.

Logan Bruss

  • 2023: $212,255
  • 2024: $424,510
  • Total: $636,765

Robert Rochell

  • 2023: $172,731
  • 2024: $172,731
  • Total: $345,462

Grand total: $982,227

It’s not a huge number in the grand scheme of things, but that’s almost $1 million the Rams won’t get back as a result of cutting Bruss and Rochell. They’d rather keep better players and eat that dead money than keep guys who won’t contribute, and now they’ll still have the chance to sign them to the practice squad.

Logan Bruss, Robert Rochell clear waivers after going unclaimed

The Rams are likely happy that Logan Bruss and Robert Rochell went unclaimed, allowing LA to sign them to the practice squad

Sean McVay said Tuesday after the Rams cut Logan Bruss that they’d like to bring him back on the practice squad. Well, they now have the chance to.

According to the NFL transaction sheet, Bruss cleared waivers after going unclaimed. The same goes for Robert Rochell, who was waived on Tuesday as part of final roster cuts.

The only Rams player who got claimed off waivers was Quindell Johnson, who is headed to Chicago after both the Bears and Raiders put in a claim for him. Everyone else who was cut by the Rams and subject to waivers went unclaimed, giving Los Angeles a lot of options for the practice squad.

Had a team claimed Bruss, it would have taken on the remainder of his contract. While it was shocking to see the Rams cut the 2022 third-round pick, the fact that no one claimed him shows how he’s viewed around the league.

Here’s the list of players cut by the Rams this week who were subject to waivers.

  • LB Kelechi Anyalebechi
  • WR Braxton Burmeister
  • DB Timarcus Davis
  • DB Tyon Davis
  • DB Vincent Gray
