Damar Hamlin collapses, Bills-Bengals Monday Night Football game suspended indefinitely

Hamlin was taken to a local hospital via ambulance. At the time of the game’s suspension he was listed in critical condition.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field Monday night during the first quarter of the Bills’ showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was transported to a local level-one trauma center where he is listed in critical condition.

After a lengthy delay in which both teams returned to their locker rooms, the NFL indefinitely postponed the Week 17 contest.

Hamlin made a tackle on Bengals wideout Tee Higgins, returned to his feet, then collapsed back to the turf. Trainers performed on-field CPR before he was loaded onto an ambulance and taken to a Cincinnati-area hospital.

Officials reportedly prodded Buffalo and the Bengals to retake the field after a five-minute break. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor conferred with Bills colleague Sean McDermott, and the game went into a broadcast delay soon after.

Both the Bills and Bengals have qualified for the AFC bracket of the 2023 NFL playoffs, though Monday night’s game would have had an effect on postseason seeding. That, of course, is of little consequence to players dealing with the fact one of their own is in critical condition.

The NFL has postponed Monday night’s Bills-Bengals gave after Bills safety Damar Hamlin was hospitalized with a frightening injury.

With 6:12 left in the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field. An ambulance was brought on to the field, and medical professionals administered CPR to the 24-year-old Hamlin.

Then, Dawn Aponte, the NFL’s chief administrator of football operations, spoke on the same phone. Right after that, ESPN cut to Bills staffers putting team equipment bags on a cart.

Then, after a protracted delay, the NFL decided to suspend the game until another time. Here is the league’s statement.

Hamlin collapsed to the field with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter after making a tackle. An ambulance came out for Hamlin, but medical staff was already conducting CPR on him in what turned out to be an extremely scary situation.

Hamlin remained on the ground for more than 10 minutes and finally was taken off the field in the vehicle.

Both head coaches on the field, Sean McDermott and Zac Taylor, for the Bills and Bengals respectively, chatted multiple times before decided to send their players to the locker room.

The first announcement was that there was going to be a “five minute warmup” for players to get back to playing until the coaches appeared to decide otherwise.

At that point, many on both sidelines were visibly upset, especially players from Buffalo.

There is no timetable currently given for when the game could possibly be continued. Bills Wire will provide updates as information is made available.

Damar Hamlin fined less for concussing Jakobi Meyers than Mac Jones for flicking football

Mac Jones’ fine was more than double what Damar Hamlin is paying for concussing Jakobi Meyers.

Just when you think the NFL fines couldn’t get any more preposterous, the league outdoes itself with the recent punishments handed down to Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin and New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

Hamlin avoided suspension and was given a meager $4,806 fine for the hit that knocked Patriots receiver Jakobi Meyers out of last Thursday’s game.

Along with missing the rest of that game, Meyers has been placed in concussion protocol and will be out of action for the team’s upcoming Monday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals. So the Patriots will be without their top receiving target in a pivotal game due to the hit.

Meanwhile, Jones was fined $10,609 for unsportsmanlike conduct after flicking a football that barely grazed Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa.

Jones flicking the ball isn’t comparable on a scale of egregiousness to Hamlin’s dangerous hit on Meyers, and yet, he paid more than double with his wallet for the incident.

The only real difference is Epenesa suited up for the Bills’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday, while Meyers remains out indefinitely with a concussion.
