2023 Power Rankings Roundup, Week 7: Where Chargers stand after loss to Cowboys

Here is what the national media thinks of the Chargers after their loss to the Cowboys.

The Chargers are coming off a loss to the Cowboys.

Here is what the national media thinks of the Bolts ahead of Week 7:

USA Today: 19 (Previous: 20)

“You can argue they stole defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. Now? Better regroup quickly for a short week that will end in Kansas City against the rested Chiefs … in a game the Bolts really need.”

Touchdown Wire: 12 (Previous: 11)

“Every week, the Chargers ruin their lives, go to rehab, get clean, and then relapse. And then the cycle repeats the next week.”

NFL: 14 (Previous: 13)

“Having entered Monday night’s game with a mangled finger on his non-throwing hand, Justin Herbert looked pretty unencumbered early but struggled at times late. Herbert missed a wide-open Keenan Allen twice on deep balls (one in each half), couldn’t find Josh Palmer on a critical turnover on downs, nearly threw an interception with about nine minutes left and did throw a pick to essentially end the game. The 4th-and-1 incompletion to Palmer in the red zone and Bolts CB Michael Davis’ whiffed tackle on Tony Pollard — while other Los Angeles defenders stood nearby and watched — were almost too on the nose for the Chargers, the way these plays have piled up this season. A few critical penalties (some wiping out big gains) really put it over the top, and breakdowns late on both sides cost L.A. yet another close game.

CBS Sports: 21 (Previous: 18)

“When will Brandon Staley learn it’s OK to take field goals to tie games? It cost him again against the Cowboys. Typical.”

ESPN: 14 (Previous: 13)

Lesson learned: Every game is going to be close.

“It doesn’t matter if it is the Aidan O’Connell-led Raiders or the record-setting Dolphins offense; the Chargers have found ways to be in close games each week. All five of the Chargers’ games have been decided by seven points or less. It’s a point coach Brandon Staley has attempted to dismiss. “It’s not college football where, you know, Georgia is playing UAB, you know, or, or Austin Peay,” he said. But at some point, this team will need to become more consistent and put opponents away. Until then, the Chargers will always be a step below the contenders in the AFC.”

Yahoo Sports: 14 (Previous: 13)

“Monday night’s loss was the quintessential Chargers game. They had chances to win but somehow lost yet another close game. It’s uncanny how all Chargers losses seem to go that way. The Chiefs are up next on the schedule and L.A. is in danger of digging itself a big hole by the end of October.”

The Athletic: 21 (Previous: 13)

“The Chargers defense, which gave up conversions on third-and-19, third-and-6 and third-and-9 on the Cowboys’ go-ahead drive Monday night, is 30th in the league in yards per play allowed (5.8) and 27th in defensive success rate (55.8 percent). The Chargers are a disappointment at 2-3, and it’s particularly acute considering they have only beaten the Vikings and Raiders.”

Chargers’ reasons for optimism vs. Cowboys

Here are four reasons to believe the Chargers come out on top over the Cowboys.

The Chargers return to the field on Monday night with a primetime matchup against the Cowboys, who are fresh off an embarrassing loss to the 49ers.

Here are four reasons to be optimistic that Los Angeles continues Dallas’ slide.

2023 Power Rankings Roundup, Week 6: Where Chargers stand after bye week

Here is what the national media thinks of the Chargers ahead of Week 6.

The Chargers are coming off their bye. Despite not playing, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some moving around in power rankings.

Here is what the national media thinks of the Bolts ahead of Week 6:

USA Today: 20 (Previous: 22)

“Did you know WR Keenan Allen owns the NFL record for most games – three – with at least 15 receptions? With wingman Mike Williams down for the count, wouldn’t be a shock if Allen extends that mark before this year is out.”

Touchdown Wire: 11 (Previous: 11)

“The Chargers are like the latest Halloween franchise. More so, Justin Herbert’s career has had the same arc as the iconic horror films. The first two movies, much like Herbert’s first two seasons, were fantastic. And then Halloween III: Season of the Witch happened, and lots of people were annoyed by the lack of Michael Myers. Now, the young quarterback is trying to salvage this season and make it his Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers- one of the best movies in the franchise. They play Dallas next week on Monday night, which is sure to feature some incredibly stupid football.”

NFL: 13 (Previous: 13)

“The panic meter dropped after the team hit the bye at 2-2 with two straight victories. But reality sets in: The Chargers must play games in 13 straight weeks, and the remaining schedule includes the following foes: the Cowboys this coming Monday, the Chiefs in Week 7 (and Week 18), the Lions in Week 10, the Ravens in Week 12 and the Bills in Week 16. Close victories over the Vikings and Raiders don’t inspire enough confidence that all is right in Chargerville heading into that stretch. The biggest worry is limiting explosive pass plays, and many of L.A.’s remaining opponents throw the ball pretty well. There’s a long road ahead.”

CBS Sports: 18 (Previous: 16)

“They come off their bye with a big home game against the Cowboys. That will be a challenge for Justin Herbert and gang.”

ESPN: 12 (Previous: 12)

Fantasy surprise: WR Keenan Allen

“Through the first five weeks — including a bye week for the Chargers — Allen has the seventh most fantasy points in PPR leagues of any receiver, ahead of other top receivers, including A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles and Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders. Allen’s best game came in Week 3, where he broke franchise and league records, catching 18 passes for 215 yards and throwing a 40-yard touchdown pass in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.”

Yahoo Sports: 13 (Previous: 14)

“The Chargers’ next game, on Monday night against the Cowboys, is a big game for both teams. The Chargers probably would be better off if Dallas hadn’t been embarrassed on Sunday night, but nothing they can do about that. Cowboys at Chargers will be a fun game (probably attended by 90 percent Cowboys fans).”

The Athletic: 13 (Previous: 11)

“If (when?) Brandon Staley gets fired, this draft class will be thrown into the list of reasons. Not high, but it’ll be there. First-round wide receiver Quentin Johnston, 4.49 speed at 6-foot-4, has six catches for 44 yards. Fourth-round receiver Derius Davis, 4.36 speed, has four catches for 24 yards. Second-round defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu is the only rookie contributing.”

Report: Cowboys highly interested in Texas RB Bijan Robinson

The Dallas Cowboys are giving significant consideration to Bijan Robinson.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson might stay in the same state after all. On Monday we learned that the Dallas Cowboys would welcome the big-time prospect should he fall to them or a couple picks before.

Dallas Cowboys writer Patrik Walker reported that the team would consider drafting him should they get the opportunity.

“If Bijan Robinson falls to near the Cowboys, he becomes a major consideration for Dallas, (per Stephen Jones),” Walker wrote. “Question then becomes how far is close enough to get on the phone?”

That’s the question many are asking about the rare talent. Some consider him reminiscent of Detroit Lions and Oklahoma State great Barry Sanders. In recent days we learned that Sanders views the great player in high esteem.

Walker shared his thoughts on when Robinson would be drafted, stating, “19th-overall is when you get on the horn and try to go get him … he’s likely gone no later than 15, but probably top 10.”

Bijan has demonstrated his value. We’ll continue to follow which NFL teams are looking to bring him in heading up to the draft.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott ‘pushing to play’ tonight

Will Cowboys QB Dak Prescott start tonight? It’s still up in the air

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott suffered a calf injury in Week 6 against the Patriots. Since then, Prescott’s status for the Week 8 matchup with the Vikings has been up in the air.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Dallas QB is pushing to play. Prescott will go through his normal pregame warmup in hopes of getting the green light to start against the Vikings, per Pelissero.

“He’ll go full speed, throw to receivers … then the organization will make the final call,” Pelissero said on Twitter.
If Prescott is unavailable, Cooper Rush should make the start for the Cowboys. I think it’s a given that Minnesota will be underdogs if Prescott is starting. But the Vikings should be favorited in a game with Rush at quarterback.
That said, it’s still a toss-up who wins, regardless of whether Prescott plays. The Vikings are 3-3 for a reason — this is an up-and-down team. And Dallas still has a high-octane offense with Ezekiel Elliott, CeeDee Lamb and Amari Cooper.

Will the Chargers-Cowboys matchup be on in your area?

Find out if you will get the matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys on national television.

The Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) are set to get Week 2 underway against the Dallas Cowboys (0-1).

Those in the red area on the TV map will get the game on CBS, courtesy of 506 Sports.

Since this is an afternoon game, the only other game that will be shown (periwinkle area) is between the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks.

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will have the call.

Los Angeles is currently 3-point favorites over Dallas. Sunday’s matchup will begin at 1:25 pm PT.

Cowboys News: Prescott, Elliott stat predictions, new QB and RB join club, Pollard fantasy value

What are the odds Cowboys come away with awards and top stats? Late fantasy value resides in Dallas’ backfield, who’s new to the team and what kind of bounce back year can Ezekiel Elliott have? The latest news and notes.

The Dallas Cowboys shook up their opening 2021 roster on both Tuesday and Wednesday. After the cuts to the 53, the club reacquired many of their released players by adding them to the practice squad while seeing a couple others move to new teams.

A couple of the players lost could come back to bite them, specifically a quarterback and defensive end that could make Dallas look away later this year when thinking about the decision. The Cowboys made their move to add another quarterback, signing former Panther Will Grier to compete with Cooper Rush for the backup spot in 2021. The question still arises with rumors around the NFL: Could Dallas entertain the idea of quarterback Cam Newton as their backup?

After some concern about the running back room, Dallas added Corey Clement to give insurance if either running backs Ezekiel Elliott or Tony Pollard miss any time during the season. Elliott is poised for a big season and Year 6 has been the lucky number for veteran backs.

Defensive tackle Brent Urban discussed his potential impact this season and how good the defense can really be after spending time around all the young guys on the roster. Here are the latest news and notes.

Cowboys News: Prescott pops, COVID updates, IR loss, that ‘Hard Knocks’ drone shot

Dak Prescott got rave reviews at practice while the Cowboys add players to (and get one back from) the COVID list, plus Rico Dowdle’s loss. | From @StarConscience, @Cdburnett7, and @ToddBrock24f7

In the final week of preseason football, the Dallas Cowboys have a lot to figure out. A multitude of players and coaches are currently in COVID protocol, limiting their preparation for Week 1 and raising questions about when they’ll each be back. Running back Rico Dowdle has also been lost, but his absence will be felt for longer after being placed on season-ending IR.

The Cowboys won’t have to wait much longer to unleash Dak Prescott, though; the starting quarterback rejoined team drills on Wednesday to rave reviews. Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones spoke highly of backup Cooper Rush, though, saying the offense would be efficient if he had to be the starter during the regular season. Jones also made headlines of a different sort with one NFL agent who had some harsh words for the Dallas boss.

In the player countdown to the regular season, there are four new entries with the profiles on linebackers Leighton Vander Esch and Luke Gifford, defensive end Bradlee Anae, and left guard Connor Williams.

And the story behind that epic Hard Knocks drone shot is as crazy as the three-minutes of footage that opened this week’s episode. This is Wednesday’s Cowboys News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Prescott playing in preseason? La’el Collins hurt in practice, Amari to suit up

Wednesday’s Dallas Cowboys news includes excitement for the LB room, returning stars, and the recap of the second episode of Hard Knocks.

The Cowboys are back in Dallas. After spending the first half of training camp in Oxnard, they’ve returned to The Star to get things ramped up as the season approaches. With wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott returning to full speed at practice, will either see the field against Houston? What to make of La’el Collins leaving Wednesday’s practice early with a possible injury?

Questions surround the kicker position with a CFL veteran in town to compete for the role while Greg Zuerlein is out. The defense is warming up to new coordinator Dan Quinn, and the offensive coordinator has set the highest of bars for his unit.

Fresh faces in the linebacker room have been an attention-grabber for the Cowboys. Keanu Neal’s transition has worked well and Leighton Vander Esch detailed what it means to have all the new guys around, including rookie Micah Parsons. And after the first roster cut, things are heating up in camp, which you can see up close in the new episode of Hard Knocks, recapped by our KD Drummond.

Here are the most recent news and notes.

Cowboys News: Prescott’s agent wasn’t happy with Russell Wilson

NFL drafts war rooms are back, Michael Irvin reacts to Prescott’s deal, and Jones’s expectations for Quinn round out the news for Friday.

Following the big press conference on Wednesday, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin made sure to give his reactions and made a comparison between Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and a 7-time Super Bowl champion. War rooms are returning for the 2021 NFL Draft, but does this mean the end of Yacht Jerry?

A stern warning for another team’s quarterback for treading in another man’s waters. An unorthodox mock draft for the Cowboys that might surprise some fans  makes the rounds. Meanwhile, could Keanu Neal be the solution for the club’s secondary issues? How much confidence does Jerry Jones have in Dan Quinn as their new defensive coordinator? A round up of the news is in order.
