Dolphins make a number of roster moves Wednesday night

They signed a player, cut one and waived one.

While the Miami Dolphins are wrapping up their OTAs this week, the front office is making moves to try and improve their roster.

The team announced Wednesday night that they’ve signed linebacker Porter Gustin. Gustin spent the last three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, bouncing from the practice squad to the active roster. The former USC Trojan has appeared in 26 games, recording 52 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a sack.

Miami also announced that they’ve waived defensive back Javaris Davis and released defensive end Daeshon Hall.

Davis spent the last two seasons on the Dolphins’ practice squad. He’s played in just one game, making two tackles and deflecting one pass. Hall was signed back in February and has, obviously, yet to appear in a game for Miami.

All three players would likely be fighting for roster/practice squad spots, so it appears that general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel just want to make those battles more competitive.

Dolphins sign former 49ers defensive end Daeshon Hall

Another 49er is following the head coach.

The Miami Dolphins have been one of the more active teams in the early part of the offseason despite spending time putting their coaching staff together under head coach Mike McDaniel.

On Friday, the team announced that they had signed defensive Daeshon Hall, who had most recently spent time with McDaniel’s former team in San Francisco.

Hall was a third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2017 after a decent four-year career at Texas A&M. He played in just one game with Carolina before being placed on injured reserve in October to end his rookie season. Hall was waived after just one season.

Since then, he’s bounced around from San Francisco to Houston to Philadelphia and to New York before winding up back in San Francisco. He appeared in just 12 games during that time and hasn’t stepped on the field during the regular season since 2019.

It’s unlikely that this will end up as a huge impact signing, but the 26-year-old could have a chance to fight for a spot when training camp comes around.

49ers release DE Daeshon Hall ahead of training camp

The San Francisco 49ers released DE Daeshon Hall a couple days ahead of training camp.

The San Francisco 49ers on Sunday released defensive end Daeshon Hall just a couple days before the start of training camp. This could be related to the pair of defensive ends the club worked out Friday.

Hall was a third-round pick of the Panthers in the 2017 draft out of Texas A&M. He played in just one game as a rookie before moving on to Philadelphia where he played in 12 games across two seasons. Hall has 1.5 sacks and one tackle for loss in his 13 career games.

The 49ers added Hall to their practice squad late last season and kept him through the offseason. His release cuts down the 49ers’ defensive end depth for the time being, though he was last on a depth chart that featured a slew of players more likely to make the club. San Francisco on Friday worked out undrafted rookie DE Justus Reed and former Bills DE Eddie Yarbrough.

There’s one vacant spot on the 49ers’ 90-man roster since there was no corresponding addition to Hall’s release.

49ers roster moves: TE George Kittle’s practice window opens

The San Francisco 49ers opened TE George Kittle’s practice window in the first step of getting him off Injured Reserve.

The San Francisco 49ers have opened the injured reserve practice window for star tight end George Kittle. He will now have the next three weeks to practice with the team before head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch must decide whether to reinstate him to the active roster or leave him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Opening his practice window before Week 15 gives the team some additional breathing room if they don’t make the playoffs. Kittle’s practice window will close when the season ends, so the 21 days will only come into play with a miraculous playoff run by San Francisco.

Kittle fractured his foot in the 49ers Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but the team has remained hopeful that he could eventually make a return to the field. In 6 games this season, Kittle has hauled in 37 receptions for 474 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The 49ers also signed DL Alex Barrett, CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun, DL Daeshon Hall, OL Aaron Neary and OL Isaiah Williams to the practice squad. Undrafted rookie TE Chase Harrell was let go from the practice squad.

Texans work out defensive end Daeshon Hall

The Houston Texans have worked out former Texas A&M defensive end Daeshon Hall, who was previously with the team in 2018.

The Houston Texans are evaluating what is available as far as edge defense.

The Texans worked out former Texas A&M defensive end Daeshon Hall on Thursday. The former 2017 Carolina Panthers third-round pick actually spent time with the Texans from Weeks 4-7 of the 2018 season. Houston signed Hall off of the San Francisco 49ers practice squad on Sept. 25, 2018, but then waived him on Oct. 20.

Hall probably won’t be able to help the Texans in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at TIAA Bank Field. The Texans could use some help on the edge as outside linebackers Jacob Martin and Whitney Mercilus will be on COVID-19 reserve along with inside linebacker Dylan Cole.

The Philadelphia Eagles just announced that they’ve waived five players as the team works to get the roster numbers down to 80. Among the cuts were defensive end Daeshon Hall and veteran receiver Shelton Gibson.

With NFL teams forced to reduce the training camp rosters amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Howie Roseman and company moved on quickly from guys that would have normally been on the 90 man roster throughout camp.

Hall suffered a torn ACL on the final play of 2019 regular season and was placed on injured reserve after a strong preseason last summer.

Gibson seems like he’s been with the Eagles for 10 years, but with the retooling of the skill positions, he and Marcus Green were obvious cut choices, as was Albert Huggins and Tremon Smith.

The Eagles roster now sits at 82 players plus DE Matt Leo, (a roster-exempt player) as training camp is officially underway.

The Philadelphia Eagles have added some depth to the running back room, signing former Georgia Bulldogs running back, Elijah Holyfield to a deal.

Elijah is the son of former heavyweight boxing champion, Evander Holyfield.

Holyfield signed with the Carolina Panthers after going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. Holyfield was waived at the end of the training camp was re-signed to the practice squad.

Splitting time with D’Andre Swift in 2018, Holyfield rushed for 1,018 yards on 159 carries with seven touchdowns in his final season in Athens.
