Four former Tigers win XFL Championship

Sal Canella, Javaris Davis, Mike Horton, and Davonte Lambert are all champions.

The Arlington Renegades won the XFL Championship 35-26 over the D.C. Defenders Saturday night and former Auburn Tigers [autotag]Sal Canella[/autotag], [autotag]Javaris Davis[/autotag], [autotag]Mike Horton[/autotag], and [autotag]Davonte Lambert[/autotag] helped them do so.

Canella, who played for Auburn from 2017-19, caught a 41-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and give the Renegades an early lead over the Defenders. The tight end finished the game with four catches for 71 yards and the score.

Despite being one of their top receivers throughout the season that was his first touchdown of the season.

Horton started at left guard for the Renegades and helped hold the Defenders to just one sack in the game.

Lambert and Davis did not record any stats in the game.

It wasn’t all positive news as former Auburn defensive tackle [autotag]Gabe Wright[/autotag] was on the Defenders. While his team lost the game he had a solid performance, making three tackles.

Dolphins position preview: Breaking down the CBs ahead of camp

It’s a lot of the same faces.

The Miami Dolphins had an extremely busy offseason between the firings and hirings of head coaches, game-changing trades and impactful free agency signings.

This time in between minicamps/OTAs and training camp is a great opportunity to assess the state of Miami’s roster at each position before they hold true competitions at the end of this month and into August under new coach Mike McDaniel for the first time.

We’ve talked about quarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers and specialists but now it’s time to jump back to the defense and discuss the cornerbacks on the roster.

Former Auburn DB waived by the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday

The former Auburn defensive back had been with the team since 2020.

On Wednesday, the Miami Dolphins announced via Twitter that they had waived former Auburn defensive back Javaris Davis. He has been on and off the roster since 2020. In 2021, he signed a reserve/futures contract with the team. However, he is now looking for a new place to call home.

Davis joined the Auburn Tigers as a part of their 2015 recruiting class. Ultimately, the Florida native chose the Tigers over both Florida and Georgia in his recruitment process. Oddly enough, Davis was recruited to be a running back. After arriving on the Plains, he would quickly make the transition to cornerback.

Over the four years that Davis played for the Tigers, he recorded 150 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and eight interceptions. After his senior season ended, he would be signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs. He would spend two months on the team’s practice squad before doing the same with the Dolphins.

The only stats that Davis recorded in an NFL game came in November of 2021 against the Carolina Panthers. He recorded two tackles in that game. It is evident that the success hasn’t translated into the league, but the Auburn faithful hopes that his career will be revitalized once he receives a new opportunity elsewhere.

Dolphins make a number of roster moves Wednesday night

They signed a player, cut one and waived one.

While the Miami Dolphins are wrapping up their OTAs this week, the front office is making moves to try and improve their roster.

The team announced Wednesday night that they’ve signed linebacker Porter Gustin. Gustin spent the last three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, bouncing from the practice squad to the active roster. The former USC Trojan has appeared in 26 games, recording 52 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a sack.

Miami also announced that they’ve waived defensive back Javaris Davis and released defensive end Daeshon Hall.

Davis spent the last two seasons on the Dolphins’ practice squad. He’s played in just one game, making two tackles and deflecting one pass. Hall was signed back in February and has, obviously, yet to appear in a game for Miami.

All three players would likely be fighting for roster/practice squad spots, so it appears that general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel just want to make those battles more competitive.

Dolphins make three roster moves ahead of Week 12 matchup with Carolina Panthers

Elijah Campbell will miss at least three games.

Before the Miami Dolphins take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, they made three moves that will affect their roster.

The team announced Saturday that they would be placing defensive back Elijah Campbell on injured reserve. Campbell was out of practice all week due to toe and knee injuries and will now be forced to miss at least three games.

In the same announcement, the team also elevated cornerback Javaris Davis and safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad. Davis, a second-year player, seems to be a potential replacement for Campbell on special teams. He has yet to play a snap in the NFL, so this may be an opportunity for him to show he can contribute in that role.

Redwine can also appear on special teams, as he played a decent amount during his time with the Browns and Jets. His elevation may also be related to safety Brandon Jones’ injury status, as he was listed as questionable on Friday.

Hopefully, this is more of a precaution than an indicator of Jones’ health.

Former Auburn CB Javaris Davis claimed by AFC East team

Javaris Davis joins a former battery mate in the secondary for the Miami Dolphins.

Javaris Davis has another new home in the NFL.

The former Auburn cornerback, who was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, has been claimed by the Miami Dolphins, per AL.com.

Davis will join his former teammate Noah Igbinoghene who was selected by the Dolphins with the 30th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

In four seasons at Auburn, Davis played in 49 games (35 starts), recording 150 tackles, eight interceptions and one forced fumble while defending 32 passes.

Dolphins claim cornerback off waiver wire from Kansas City

Dolphins claim cornerback off waiver wire from Kansas City

The Miami Dolphins have had a busy weekend in trying to shuffle around their roster and get their final pieces in place for the start of the 2020 season. Miami, after a few months of radio silence in the way of making transactions, has cut a number of players in recent days in addition to the team’s trade for TE Adam Shaheen. And now the Dolphins have managed to make another addition, this time coming courtesy of the waiver wire. No one worked the wire quite like the Dolphins last year, who seemed to pluck a handful of players each week to introduce to the active roster.

As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

The Dolphins have yet to really strike gold courtesy of the waiver wire — although several promising candidates already exist on the roster courtesy of WR Gary Jennings Jr. and DL Zach Sieler. The team has claimed their next possible steal, once again tapping into the overflow of talent from a playoff contender.

The most recent wire claim is CB Javaris Davis from the Kansas City Chiefs — Miami announced yesterday afternoon that the team was awarded Davis off of waivers and further proves our long-assumed theory that there is no such thing as “too many cornerbacks”.

The Dolphins have aggressively attacked the position all offseason, but those reinforcements (namely free agent Byron Jones and draft pick Noah Igbinoghene) aren’t stopping the Dolphins from grabbing a player that has clearly caught their eye for one reason or another.

Davis, who was an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft, ran a blazing 4.39s 40-yard dash at the 2020 NFL Combine and comes to the Dolphins with the benefit of serving as a teammate of 1st-round pick Noah Igbinoghene with the Auburn Tigers. The Dolphins had a large collection of personnel in house this past spring for the Tigers’ early Pro Day — Miami had GM Chris Grier, head coach Brian Flores and defensive coordinator Josh Boyer in house to work with the players. It is safe to assume that Davis left a lasting impression on the Dolphins’ staff after getting a chance to work with him up close and in-person.

Dolphins claim former Chiefs CB Javaris Davis off waivers

Davis was released by the Chiefs on Sunday and claimed by the Dolphins on Monday.

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs waived former Auburn Tigers cornerback Javaris Davis with a non-football injury designation. On Monday, the Miami Dolphins announced that they were awarded Davis from Kansas City off of the NFL’s waiver wire.

The Chiefs signed Davis as one of 18 undrafted free agents added following the 2020 NFL Draft. He was one of three cornerbacks that the team signed in undrafted free agency in a need to reinforce their depth at the position. Davis’ departure from Kansas City helps the team as they look to trim the offseason roster down to 80 players ahead of the NFL’s August 16 deadline.

Davis (5-8, 183 pounds) recorded 150 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, eight interceptions and 27 passes defended during his career with Auburn.

This marks the first player released by the Chiefs to be claimed off of waivers ahead of the 2020 NFL season. As the reigning Super Bowl champions don’t be surprised when other teams look to add players released by Kansas City.

Best CBs for the Ravens in each round of the 2020 NFL Draft

A cornerback for the Ravens to consider in each round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Baltimore Ravens benefitted from great cornerback play in 2019. Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey both earned All-Pro nods and Jimmy Smith came back from a knee injury to bolster the group down the stretch. But this doesn’t mean the team won’t keep looking to improve their secondary, especially with how pass-heavy teams are in this era.

Baltimore needs more depth after declining Brandon Carr’s 2020 option. While the Ravens re-signed Smith, it was on a one-year contract. And when added in with Tavon Young missing all of last season due to a neck injury, the lack of depth behind that great starting group could seriously hurt Baltimore’s goal of a Super Bowl this season.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the best cornerback options for the Ravens in each round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

1st Round – Trevon Diggs, Alabama

The Ravens have a long history of selecting players who spent their college careers with the Crimson Tide. They’ve taken 11 players from Alabama in their history, with four players taken between 2017 and 2018, including a first-round pick on Humprey back in 2017. If they want to use their first selection on a corner in 2020, then Diggs could be a possible target.

The younger brother of Bills wide receiver Stefon, Diggs earned Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2019, thanks to his 11 passes defended and three interceptions. Diggs has the prototypical length for the position. He primarily played outside in college, although he did spend some time in the slot. Diggs could also be an asset on special teams, after averaging 9.2 yards per punt return and 23.8 yards on kick-off returns.

Diggs is far from the finished product, but if given the chance to come in and learn his craft rather than being forced to be the alpha from Day 1, he could develop into a solid NFL cornerback.

Jets Wire’s 2020 NFL Mock Draft 4.0: New York’s 7-round projection

Jets Wire’s Mock Draft 4.0 has New York landing Louisville OT Mekhi Becton at 11 and Penn State WR K.J. Hamler at 48.

With the draft this coming Thursday, we at the Jets Wire have another mock ready to go. This projection focuses strictly on the Jets and what they could do through all seven rounds.

The Jets find themselves in an interesting position with the 11th pick. At this point, they seem destined to take a tackle or a receiver. What they do in the first round may telegraph their plans for the rest of the draft.

In this mock draft, New York is able to add four potential starters on offense through its first four selections. By bulking up on offense, the Jets are putting Sam Darnold in a better position to succeed. This mock draft focuses less on the defensive side of the ball, as Gregg Williams has proven he can do a lot with a little and Joe Douglas indicated that free agency will pick back up after the draft commences.

Let’s take a look at who we think the Jets could take in Douglas’ first draft as the team’s general manager in Jets Wire’s fourth mock draft.

1st Round:

11. Mekhi Becton | OT | Lousiville

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy)

Despite having a drug test flagged at the NFL combine, Mekhi Becton should be one of the Jets’ primary targets. He has the positional versatility and mobility at 6-foot-7, 367 pounds to play both offensive tackle positions and can step int the starting lineup right away.

A wide receiver is tempting here, but an offensive tackle is the smart and safe move. Becton was the only one of the top offensive tackles to visit the Jets multiple times in the pre-draft process before visits were shut down due to the pandemic, so New York has gotten plenty of time to vet him.
