3 Tigers make D1Baseball’s preseason All-American team

Dylan Crews, Tommy White and Paul Skenes were all First Team selections.

D1Baseball.com recently released its preseason All-American teams and three LSU Tigers made it on the First Team: [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

Crews, regarded as the best player in college baseball, is listed as a First Team outfielder. Last season, Crews finished with a .349 batting average with 22 homers and 72 RBI. Crews is projected as the No. 1 prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft, but he has some unfinished business on the Bayou as he is trying to bring a championship back to LSU.

Now, for the new kids on the block. White is a star transfer from NC State. He is listed as a First Team All-American as a designated hitter. Last season, White finished with a .362 batting average with 27 homers and 74 RBI. White broke the NC State record for most homers in a single season by a freshman.

Skenes is listed as a utility player, that’s because Skenes is an anomaly. He can hit as well as pitch. Skenes was 10-3 as a starting pitcher with a 2.73 ERA and has a .312 batting average with 13 homers and 38 RBI.

The future looks bright on the Bayou for coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers. The season gets underway on Feb. 17 at Alex Box stadium vs.. Western Michigan.

LSU baseball earns another preseason No. 1 ranking

The Tigers could be in for a special season in 2023.

Another day, another preseason accolade for [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU baseball team.

This time, it comes by way of D1Baseball, where the Tigers have been named the No. 1 team in the country. The SEC has asserted its dominance as the best conference in college baseball, and that is shown by having seven of the top 10 teams.

LSU is joined by No. 2 Tennessee, No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 10 Vanderbilt — and that’s just the top 10. No. 20 Alabama and No. 23 South Carolina also made the top 25.

Conference play begins on March 17 for LSU as the Tigers travel to take on the No. 5 Aggies. The next two conference series after that are at home against No. 8 Arkansas, and No. 2 Tennessee. With all of the new recruits and transfers from other schools, these guys are going to have to be as ready as ever when conference play begins.

The Tigers could finish this season in Omaha, Nebraska, playing for the College World Series, but only time will tell.

Dylan Crews named top college prospect by D1Baseball

Crews could be heading into a monster year for the Tigers.

While 71% of the Earth is covered by water, the other 29% is covered by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

He is a legend not only on the bayou but across the country. D1Baseball recently released its list of the top 100 college players for the 2023 MLB draft, and Crews tops the list. The MLB draft order was just released on Tuesday, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have the first pick of the draft followed by the Nationals, Tigers, Rangers and Twins.

Crews finished last season with a .349 batting average with 11 doubles, 22 Crews missiles, and 72 RBI. He was named a Consensus First-team All-American, SEC Co-player of the year, and was a member of the College National Team.

LSU is preparing for the 2023 season after signing back-to-back No. 1 recruiting classes. The excitement and the expectations are high at the Box and deservedly so. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] enters his second year on the Bayou and will have one of the most talented rosters in the country. These guys could be the next national champions.

Oklahoma’s Cade Horton ranks No. 2 among college RHP draft prospects according to D1 Baseball

After a strong second half of the 2022 season, redshirt freshman Cade Horton has been ranked as the No. 2 college RHP prospect for the 2022 MLB Draft.

While not as much of an event as the NFL Draft, the MLB Draft is still a momentous occasion for high school and college baseball players alike. The MLB Draft begins on July 17 at 6 p.m. C.S.T.

After missing the 2021 season due to injury, redshirt freshman Cade Horton has been ranked as the No. 2 college right handed pitching prospect for the 2022 draft by D1Baseball.

Oklahoma State’s Justin Campbell is right behind Horton at No. 3.

While Horton had a 4.86 ERA for the season, he was phenomenal in the NCAA Tournament, winning three of his final five starts, including the Big 12 Championship against the Longhorns. Two bad games against West Virginia and Texas Tech make his ERA look much worse than how he performed down the stretch.

Horton started the season coming out of the bullpen for the Sooners and finished the season as one of their most reliable starting pitchers. If he stays in Norman next season after being drafted, he will be a valuable part of the rotation as OU tries to make it back to Omaha.

The MLB Draft is much longer than other drafts in North American Sports. It will go for 20 rounds and have compensatory selections. While not nearly as long as it used to be, the MLB Draft has recovered from the five-round draft in 2020.

If Horton gets drafted this weekend, which seems likely, he will have until August 1 to sign.

Here’s where Florida’s final 2022 season ranking per D1Baseball

The Gators made the top 25 so I guess that’s good? Disappointing year for the Orange and Blue out on the diamond.

The 2022 season was not quite what the Gator Nation expected out of Florida baseball when star center fielder [autotag]Jud Fabian[/autotag] shunned the Boston Red Sox to return to Gainesville while Hunter Barco emerged as the ace of the starting pitching staff. An underwhelming campaign by the former along with a season-ending injury to the latter — among many other disappointments — put a damper on [autotag]Kevin Sullivan[/autotag]’s lofty plans coming into spring.

Florida ended up putting together a 42-24 record overall while going just 15-15 in Southeastern Conference play as the team simply could not find any consistency. UF did show some life in the SEC tournament, fighting its way to the final game against the top-ranked (at the time) Tennessee Volunteers, who ended the Orange and Blue’s Cinderella run with a hard-fought 8-5 victory.

The Gators failed to get out of its regional round for the third-straight season — the second-straight in which they hosted — beating the Central Michigan Chippewas twice while going just 1-2 against the Oklahoma Sooners, who took the regional final after a rain delay put a wet blanket on Florida’s near-victory. Now that the Ole Miss Rebels have been crowned College Baseball World Series winners, it is time for the season’s final rankings to roll in.

According to D1Baseball, Florida finishes ranked No. 21 in the nation, giving the SEC seven total teams in the top 25. Obviously, The Rebels finished first, while the Texas A&M Aggies and Arkansas Razorbacks are ranked third and fourth, respectively, with the Auburn Tigers coming up at No. 7, Tennessee at No. 9 and LSU Tigers rounding things out at No. 25.

Report: Troy Tulowitzki will not return to Texas next season

Texas baseball is going to look drastically different in 2023.

Texas baseball is going to look drastically different in 2023.

The Longhorns will likely be forced to replace double-digit key contributors from this season’s squad including All-Americans Ivan Melendez and Murphy Stehly.

The coaching staff is also going through a major shake-up. David Pierce decided to let go of pitching coach Sean Allen at the end of the season after the Texas pitching staff struggled with consistency most of the year.

Volunteer assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki is also heading out the door.

Tulowitzki did fantastic in his role helping take Texas’ offense to new heights over the past couple of seasons. The Longhorns broke nearly every offensive stat in school history this season en route to a second straight College World Series trip.

Tulo played a huge role in the development of the Texas infielders from a defensive standpoint. Texas finished with a top-five fielding percentage in back-to-back seasons.

Calling our shot on who will survive each super regional this weekend.

After one of the most wild regional weekends in recent college baseball history that saw tons of home runs, incredible comebacks and clutch performances, the eight super regional sites are now officially set.

There are 11 national seeds and five unseeded teams that advanced to the super regional round setting up a full slate of intriguing matchups.

  • Notre Dame vs. No. 1 Tennessee
  • No. 9 Texas vs. No. 8 East Carolina
  • Oklahoma vs. No. 4 Virginia Tech
  • No. 12 Louisville vs. No. 5 Texas A&M
  • UCONN vs. No. 2 Stanford
  • Arkansas vs. No. 10 North Carolina
  • No. 14 Auburn vs. No. 3 Oregon State

The winners of each best of three series will make the trip to Omaha, NE for the College World Series.

Here is a look at who we think will be moving on to Omaha after the super regionals are completed.

Texas returns to the D1Baseball rankings after a 3-1 week

A strong finish would get Texas back into the mix to host a regional.

Texas is back into D1Baseball’s top 25 rankings at No. 22 after a 3-1 week that included a road series victory over West Virginia. Continue reading “Texas returns to the D1Baseball rankings after a 3-1 week”

Latest postseason projections for LSU baseball

The Tigers are hosting a regional as things currently stand in the D1Baseball bracket projection.

We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty — and I don’t mean the dirt band —of the 2022 baseball season.

The LSU Tigers are currently 30-14 overall and 12-9 in SEC play with only three conference series (at Alabama, home vs. Ole Miss and at Vanderbilt) and two mid-week games (vs. Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State) left in the regular season.

D1Baseball recently released its updated postseason projections and, as of now, LSU would be hosting a regional as the No. 15 overall seed. The three other teams that are projected in the region just happen to be teams that LSU is very familiar with.

It has played one game each against Texas, Louisiana Tech, and McNeese State, going 1-3 in that stretch. The Tigers played the Longhorns in the Shriners College Classic back in March and lost 6-1 at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Four days after that game, LSU played McNeese State and beat the Cowboys 6-3. It has played Louisiana Tech twice this season, losing the first game 11-6 in Ruston before the Bulldogs came to Baton Rouge and pulled off a comeback victory in 12 innings. The Tigers had a 6-4 lead entering the top of the ninth inning but couldn’t close the game out.

All of those games were played earlier in the season. A lot has changed since then, and a lot can still change between now and regionals. We will see what happens between now and then, and LSU will hope it can improve its standing even more in that span.

The Tigers start their three-game series with the Crimson Tide this Friday night at 6 p.m. CT.
