Alabama No. 20 in SEC-loaded preseason top 25 by D1 Baseball

Alabama baseball lands inside the top 25 in D1 Baseball’s preseason poll.

The college baseball season is now less than a month away so preseason polls are beginning to drop by various syndications.

Earlier this week, D1 Baseball dropped its preseason top 25 rankings and to the surprise of no one, the SEC is well represented.

Even Brad Bohannon and the Alabama Crimson Tide cracked the top 25, coming in at No. 20.

Nine teams from the SEC are represented inside the top 25 including seven of the top ten teams.

LSU and Tennessee are considered the cream of the crop, not just in the SEC, but nationally so there isn’t much shock at who came in at No. 1 and No. 2.

In all, six of the College Wire sites are represented in this edition of the preseason top 25.

Tennessee ranked second in 2023 D1 Baseball preseason poll

Tennessee is ranked second in D1 Baseball’s 2023 preseason poll.

Opening day for Tennessee baseball is slated for Feb. 17.

The Vols will play in the 2023 MLB Desert Invitational in Arizona Feb. 17-19. The MLB Desert Invitational field will consist of Tennessee, Arizona, Fresno State, Michigan State and San Diego.

Tennessee’s 2023 baseball schedule

Tennessee won the Southeastern Conference East division for the second consecutive season, the league regular-season and tournament championships in 2022.

The Vols were a No. 1 overall national seed in the NCAA Tournament, winning the Knoxville regional and advancing to the Knoxville super regional.

Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for 10 consecutive weeks (March 28-May 30) during the 2022 season.

D1 Baseball released its 2023 preseason poll Tuesday. D1 Baseball’s 2023 preseason poll is listed below.

D1 baseball ranks Texas’ freshman class No. 4 in NCAA

Texas has the No. 4 freshman baseball class according to D1 baseball.

Texas is going to look a lot different on the diamond this season. Several Longhorns exhausted eligibility or departed for the MLB.

Despite the losses, David Pierce brings in a strong freshman class. According to D1 baseball, it is the fourth-best freshman class in the nation. They could need the group badly.

The veteran laden 2022 squad sent multiple players to the MLB Draft. The Longhorns will be without ace pitcher Pete Hansen after carrying the pitching staff last year. Golden Spikes Award winner Ivan Melendez is gone after a historic season on the Forty Acres.

Skyler Messinger, Murphy Stehly, Trey Faltine, Douglas Hodo and Silas Ardoin add to the list of potential big-time departing contributors.

Many still believe the Longhorns will be in the mix for contention in 2023. Multiple outlets rank the blue blood baseball program in their early Preseason Top 25 rankings. One poll saw Texas as high as No. 18.

David Pierce will look to maximize contribution from younger players in 2023.

Max Wagner makes D1Baseball’s All-America First-Team

Clemson third baseman Max Wagner just received another honor for his 2022 season.

Clemson baseball third baseman Max Wagner just added another honor to his resume.

Having already won the ACC Player of the Year award, Wagner has now been named to D1Baseball’s All-America First-Team.

Playing in 58 games as a sophomore in 2022, Wagner led the Tigers in batting average with .369 and had a team-high 27 home runs, 76 RBIs and .496 on-base percentage. He was also named to Collegiate Baseball’s All-American First-Team earlier this month.

Besides leading the Tigers in nearly every offensive category, Wagner also set a school record by averaging a home run every 7.5 at-bats.

With Clemson entering a new era with newly-appointed head coach Erik Bakich, Wagner’s performance in 2022 is undoubtedly a positive for a program that missed the past two NCAA Tournaments.

LSU baseball rises as high as No. 3 in Baseball polls

The Tigers went 4-1 this past week, moving up in the polls in the process.

After playing a five-game stretch last week in which the Tigers went 4-1, LSU has climbed the college baseball rankings as high as the No. 3 spot.

This is fitting, because LSU’s No. 3 has a lot to do with why the Tigers had so much success during that stretch. LSU outfielder Dylan Crews batted .444 (8-for-18) with one triple, two homers, nine RBI, four runs scored, and a .565 on-base percentage in the last five games.

Crews is now hitting a team-high .483 on the year with one double, three triples, two homers, 13 RBI, and 12 runs. Along with the hot-hitting Crews, the Tigers definitely got their Money’s worth when Blake Money was on the mound. Money was brilliant on Friday night, as he defeated Towson with seven shutout innings, increasing his scoreless innings streak this season to 14 straight.

Money limited Towson to no runs on just two hits – a pair of singles – in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Money is 2-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA, a .085 opponent batting average, and three walks and 17 strikeouts in 14 innings.

The Tigers rank No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game rankings, and they sit in the top 10 of D1 Baseball, USA TODAY Sports and Baseball America’s polls, sitting at No. 7 in the former two and at No. 8 in the latter.

This week will be a very interesting week for LSU Baseball as the Tigers play against New Orleans this Wednesday before traveling to Minute Maid Park in Houston for the Shriners College Classic. LSU will play Oklahoma on Friday, No. 1 Texas on Saturday, and Baylor on Sunday.

Arkansas Baseball No. 2 in Preseason Rankings

The first of the three most respected college baseball rankings was released today with D1Baseball dropping their Preseason Top 25. The defending SEC champions start the season at #2, just behind preseason #1 Texas. The Hogs open their season on February 18 at home against Illinois State.

The first of the three most respected college baseball rankings was released today with D1Baseball dropping their Preseason Top 25. The defending SEC champions start the season at #2, just behind preseason #1 Texas. The Hogs open their season on February 18 at home against Illinois State.

Aaron Fitt is high on the Hogs, arguing that this team may be deeper and more talented top to bottom than the 2021 Hogs.

If the unproven commodities on the mound can live up to their prodigious talent, this might wind up being the best Arkansas team ever, because the offense and defense will be elite once again.

SEC brethren Vanderbilt, defending National Champions Mississippi State, and Ole Miss round out the preseason Top 5. Arkansas has 16 games scheduled against ranked teams, the first of which will be against #6 Stanford in the Karbach Round Rock Classic on Saturday, February 26 at 6:00pm. The Cardinal are coming off a trip to Omaha last year.

Neither the Baseball America nor the USA Today Coaches Poll have been released.

Where’s the love? UGA Baseball still unranked in major polls

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team is being slept on by quite a few pollsters

Despite compiling an impressive 10-3 record to start the season, the Georgia baseball team has not cracked the top 25 in the D1Baseball or Baseball America’s polls.

To give the pollsters credit, the Bulldogs have played a relatively light nonconference schedule. Georgia will face much improved competition in a few weeks during SEC play, but its best win is Georgia State or Georgia Southern.

Georgia lost its top two starting pitchers, Emerson Hancock and Cole Wilcox, to the MLB draft last year, but it is still ranked No. 22 in the nation in team ERA. This includes teams from the Big Ten and Mid-American Conference who have only played 2-3 games as well.

Are the Dawgs being slept on? It sure seems like it …
