49ers place 2 on season-ending IR, sign DE to active roster

Tons of roster moves for the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers announced a slew of roster moves Saturday ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the New England Patriots.

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and linebacker Curtis Robinson were both placed on IR after suffering season-ending injuries.

Hargrave tore his triceps in the 49ers’ Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Robinson, a reserve and key special teams contributor tore his ACL during Thursday’s practice.

The 49ers had three open roster spots after placing that pair on IR. They filled one of those spots by promoting defensive end Sam Okuayinonu to the active roster from the practice squad. Okuayinonu posted the first full sack of his career in Week 3 when he was up on a standard practice squad elevation. He figures to be a key piece of the 49ers’ defensive line rotation, and he may even see time rushing from the interior.

Two players were also elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Undrafted rookie defensive tackle Evan Anderson will make his NFL debut, beating out veterans T.Y. McGill and Shakel Brown for the one-week roster spot. He’ll get playing time as a run stopper on the interior.

The other elevation is another undrafted rookie. Safety Jaylen Mahoney will make his NFL debut. He gives the 49ers added depth at safety with Talanoa Hufanga officially listed as questionable after rolling his ankle in practice on Friday.

Kickoff between the 49ers and Patriots is slated for 1:05pm Pacific Time from Levi’s Stadium.

The injury bug continues to roll through the San Francisco 49ers’ roster. After the linebacker exited practice on Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Curtis Robinson had suffered a season-ending injury.

The 49ers core special teamer has recorded one tackle three games into the 2024 season. The former Stanford Cardinal has played four seasons with the 49ers, playing 12 games in that span.

With Robinson down for the season, the 49ers will need to lean on players like Dee Winters, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Tatum Bethune in the linebacking core behind Fred Warner and De’Vondre Campbell.

7 Linebacker additions to help with Cowboys with the home stretch

The Cowboys could use some linebacker help heading into the playoffs. Here’s a look at who is available. | From @ArmyChiefW3

The debate was settled when Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons effectively told everyone that he would be crowding the line of scrimmage, instead of the Twitter-induced idea of playing off-the-ball linebacker. Parsons leads or is near the top in almost every statistical category yet the knee-jerk reaction to switching positions set the world on fire after a poor run-defense game against Buffalo.

With Parsons cemented as a pass rusher, it still doesn’t solve the Cowboys issue at their thinning linebacker group. The return of Cowboys defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins from a high ankle sprain would certainly help but he didn’t suit up against Miami and is questionable a week later for the tilt against Detroit.

Dallas entered the season light at the position and made some head-scratching moves that placed them in the spot they are in now. To supplement the lack of depth, the Cowboys utilized safeties to help stabilize their issues. While it may be easy for some to just say “go get a guy,” the guys available may come with issues of their own.

49ers promote pair of defensive players before Week 6 contest vs. Browns

Before traveling to Cleveland, the 49ers have promoted two defensive players from the practice squad before Week 6.

After a fiery win in a rivalry bout with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers will hit the road for Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns.

Before traveling to Ohio, the 49ers announced a pair of roster moves prior to meeting the Browns on Sunday. The 49ers elevated corner Shemar Jean-Charles and linebacker Curtis Robinson from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Cleveland.

Jean-Charles has already suited up one game this season for the 49ers against the Giants on Thursday Night Football. Prior to joining the 49ers, the former App State defensive back played 21 games with the Green Bay Packers since 2021. Jean-Charles was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Packers.

Robinson played in the season opener against the Steelers, recording a single tackle. Robins has played six other games with the 49ers dating back to 2021. Robinson played at Stanford in college.

Kickoff between the 49ers and Browns is set for 10 a.m. PT on Sunday in Cleveland.

49ers agree to bring back recently-released TE Tyler Kroft, DE Jordan Willis

The #49ers have agreements to bring back TE Tyler Kroft and DE Jordan Willis.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced their initial 53-man roster, but that group should change relatively quickly. Shortly after their final cuts were made, the club announced free safety Jimmie Ward and linebacker Curtis Robinson would go on short-term IR. Tight end Tyler Kroft and defensive end Jordan Willis both have agreements to return to the club after being released from the 80-man roster.

Ward is dealing with a hamstring injury, and Robinson suffered a high ankle sprain in the preseason finale vs. the Texans. Both players will be required to miss at least four games by going on IR.

Kroft and Willis were both on the roster bubble and wound up on the outside of the initial list.

They’ll wind up carrying four tight ends once Kroft is added to the roster. He adds perhaps more pass-catching ability than either Charlie Woerner or Ross Dwelley bring behind George Kittle.

Willis is a good rotational defensive end who can also contribute on special teams. His release was a surprise, but since he didn’t have to pass waivers the team knew they could get him back without risking another team claiming him. Willis will be the 10th defensive lineman.

49ers injuries: 2 LBs hurt vs. Texans

The 49ers are shorthanded at linebacker vs. the Texas with two LBs hurt.

The 49ers are resting their top three linebackers against the Texans, but now they find themselves very thin at the position following injuries to linebacker Oren Burks and Curtis Robinson.

Burks is questionable to return with a knee injury. Robinson, who’s also missed time with a groin issue, has been ruled out per the 49ers.

With both of those players banged up and none of the three starters suited up, the 49ers are down to a Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Segun Olubi at that spot.

Broncos make several changes to practice squad

The Broncos added RB Kerrith Whyte and OT Adrian Ealy to the practice squad and released LB Curtis Robinson.

The Denver Broncos added two practice squad players and parted ways with another on Tuesday, the team announced.

Denver signed running back Kerrith Whyte and offensive tackle Adrian Ealy to the 16-player practice squad and released inside linebacker Curtis Robinson.

Cutting Robinson was a somewhat surprising move given that he was called on to play in three games this season, totaling five tackles and one quarterback hit. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the rookie out of Stanford land on another team’s practice squad.

Whyte (5-10, 204 pounds) is a second-year running back who has spent time with five NFL teams, appearing in six regular season games. He has played primarily as a returner.

Ealy (6-6, 321 pounds) is an undrafted rookie out of Oklahoma who signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May and started the season on their practice squad.

In addition to making the above transactions, the Broncos also protected offensive tackle Quinn Bailey, running back Damarea Crockett and wide receiver Seth Williams on the practice squad this week.

Denver also worked out free agent defensive back Adrian Colbert on Tuesday. Ealy worked out for the Broncos last week before joining the practice squad this week, so Colbert might be a player to keep an eye on.

Broncos made 6 roster moves Tuesday

Broncos GM George Paton was busy on Tuesday, making six transactions.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has been busy. After completing two trades in recent days, Paton made six more transactions on Tuesday.

Broncos made 5 moves at linebacker ahead of ‘Thursday Night Football’

After losing Alexander Johnson to a season-ending injury, the Broncos made some roster adjustments at linebacker.

After losing starting inside linebacker Alexander Johnson to a season-ending pectoral injury, the Denver Broncos made five roster moves ahead of a “Thursday Night Football” showdown with the Cleveland Browns.

Here’s a quick recap of the team’s five transactions.

Broncos protect 3 practice squad players for Week 3

Broncos protected Brett Rypien (QB3), Damarea Crockett (RB4/special teams) and OL Austin Schlottmann (Graham Glasgow depth) on the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos have protected three practice squad players for Week 3, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Brett Rypien was protected and he will likely continue being protected each week this season as the team’s third-string quarterback.

Austin Schlottmann was also protected, likely in case fellow guard Graham Glasgow (illness) is not able to play on Sunday.

For the third straight week, running back Damarea Crockett was also protected.

NFL teams can elevate two practice squad players to the game day roster each week and those players are eligible to revert back to the practice squad without having to clear waivers up to two times per season.

Because Crockett has already been elevated twice this season, he would be subject to the waiver wire next week if the Broncos elevate him again for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Teams are allowed to protect four players per week, so only protecting three players might be a sign that a practice squad player is a candidate to get promoted to the 53-man roster this week, removing the need to protect him.

One potential candidate to get promoted to the active roster could be linebacker Curtis Robinson following Josey Jewell’s season-ending injury.

The unprotected players on Denver’s practice squad are eligible to leave the team to join another team’s active roster. The protected players can’t be poached by other teams this week.
