Steph Curry presents commencement speech to celebrate graduating class of 2020

In honor of the graduating class of 2020, Stephen Curry served as the virtual commencement speaker.

While the coronavirus pandemic has halted graduation ceremonies across the world, Stephen Curry still found a way to celebrate the class of 2020. Alongside Kevin Hart and Serena Williams, the Golden State point guard participated in a virtual celebration ceremony for the graduating class of 2020.

Curry, Williams and Hart welcomed students from all over to participate in the “Show Me Your Walk” event. Graduating students were invited to show off their walk across the virtual stage to pick up their diploma.

Like any graduation, the class of 2020 was formally addressed by a group of commencement speakers, including the NBA’s two-time Most Valuable Player.

In his commencement speech, Curry spoke about his journey at Davidson college, family and “his walk.” The six-time All-Star capped off his talk with a challenge for the graduates to “shoot your shot.”

I’m grateful for this opportunity to congratulate you, the undefeated class of 2020. You’re my kind of people — you all know that. You’re record-setting. You’re history-making and you show up to win even in the greatest adversity. You follow through. It’s not what you start; it’s what you finish. You follow through on the promises to yourself. You adapt. You create and inspire. And you continue to dream big and hope. We’re here today to celebrate because we believe in the work that you’ve done. It should be celebrated at the highest level no matter what’s going on right now…

Finding 3 Warriors backup options for Stephen Curry in the NBA Draft

Who could the Warriors find in the NBA draft to fill their depth chart behind Stephen Curry?

The postponement of the NBA draft lottery has given the Golden State Warriors more time to prepare for one of their most important selections in years.

Golden State’s league-worst record has set them up for a chance to grab a top-tier prospect early in the draft. Before the Warriors are on the clock, Steve Kerr and Bob Myers will be tasked with figuring out their draft plan. Do they trade the pick? Take the best player available? Draft for a need? All questions Golden State’s front office will need to answer over the next couple of months.

If the Warriors opt to fill a void on their roster with their draft pick, it will quickly narrow down their player pool. Despite having one of the best point guards in the NBA in navigating the court, the Warriors’ depth behind Stephen Curry is thin.

Curry missing 60 games throughout the season has given a trio of Warriors the chance to solidify a spot behind the two-time Most Valuable Player. However, inconsistent play from Ky Bowman, Damion Lee and Jordan Poole could push Golden State to address the point guard position in the draft.

If the Warriors decide to add to their backcourt with one of their three picks in the 2020 draft, here are some names to watch.

Steve Kerr uses story about surfing to compare Steph Curry and Steve Nash

Steve Kerr told a surfing story about Steve Nash that reminded him of Stephen Curry.

Before he roamed the sidelines of Chase Center with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr got to witness another MVP point guard work. For three seasons, Kerr was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns during the Steve Nash era.

On the “Runnin’ Plays” podcast with Kerith Burke and Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area, Golden State’s head coach brought up Nash when talking about Curry.

Kerr spoke about Curry’s hunger for wanting to win everything from a practice shooting competition to bowling and ping pong tournaments. The six-time All-Star’s knack for excelling at anything he puts his mind to reminded Kerr of Phoenix’s Hall of Fame point guard.

Kerr told a story about surfing with Nash to compare the pair of dynamic shooters.

Via NBC Sports Bay Area:

He’s like Steve Nash in that regard. Steve Nash came out to visit me in San Diego, probably seven or eight years ago, and I used to surf at that time, and he had never surfed before. So he, he decided to paddle out, he said ‘well what do I do?’ and I’m not a very good surfer, but I tried to give him my advice. We paddle out there, and I said, ‘hey, just you know, paddle into this, you want to do is you turn the board and you paddle. And then you kind of stand, you know, you try to stand up, you pop up real quick and now it’s probably going to take a few times,’ and he’s like, ‘okay.’ The first wave comes he paddles twice he pops up he’s surfing. He surfs the thing all the way into the shore I’m like, ‘it took me like three weeks to do that.’

Nash and Steph [Curry] are exactly the same way you just put a ball or a stick in their hand, whatever, whatever needs to be done, they’re going to figure out a way to do it. And Klay [Thompson] is like that too. Just unbelievable hand-eye coordination, and no matter what the sport is, they just know how to do it.

After spending 17 seasons in the NBA, Nash joined the Warriors staff as a player development consultant. Before the NBA season was put on hold, the eight-time All-Star was spotted working with Curry during his hand injury rehab.

While in quarantine, Curry’s taken up a bevy of different tasks. The Golden State Warriors point guard has been busy with vlogging, homeschooling his daughter and dancing. It’s an easy bet Curry is probably above average at all of them.

Steve Kerr: Steph Curry’s most underrated quality is just how competitive he is

Steve Kerr has high praise for Stephen Curry, the competitor.

Over the past two weeks, basketball fans around the world have had the opportunity to learn more about Michael Jordan. ESPN’s 30 for 30 “The Last Dance” chronicles the 1990s Chicago Bulls teams in a 10-part documentary series.

From battling “The Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, to game winners and intense practices with his teammates, the mystique of Jordan’s competitive drive has been a common theme throughout the first four chapters in the documentary.

In the middle of most of it is the Golden State Warriors head coach. After spending five seasons alongside Jordan, Steve Kerr is featured throughout the series.

With stories of fierce competition becoming a trending topic following “The Last Dance,” Kerr was asked about Stephen Curry, the competitor.

On the “Runnin’ Plays” podcast with Kerith Burke and Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area, Kerr praised the Warriors point guard.

Via NBC Sports Bay Area:

I think it’s probably Steph’s [Curry] most underrated quality is just how competitive he is, and I think it’s underrated because of just his physical stature and the way he looks. He’s so different from your average NBA star. Most NBA stars they’re physically imposing and here’s Steph — he looks like he’s just another guy and then he makes everything looks so easy with his game.

So, you don’t really see the fire, that’s in him. But, you feel it. And when you coach him, or you play with him, you understand how desperately he wants to win. You can see it his work ethic every day. You can see it in his eyes and he is a fierce, fierce competitor, but he’s unique to himself. I think that’s one of the things that makes Steph special is that he has this incredibly rare combination of brash confidence and humility and a fierce competitive desire that is sort of disguised by this unbelievably joyful way of playing basketball.

There’s never been anybody with this kind of combination. And so I think that’s one of the reasons the fans love them so much.

Curry’s drive for competition has been put on hold throughout the 2019-20 season.

The two-time Most Valuable Player has missed 60 games due to a broken hand injury he suffered against the Phoenix Suns. Curry’s return was put on hold after one game when the NBA season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If the NBA season returns, the six-time All-Star will have 17 games remaining to close out the 2019-20 calendar.

Jayson Tatum gives credit to Stephen Curry for changing the game

Jayson Tatum has high praise for Stephen Curry.

After bringing three championships and a pair of Most Valuable Player awards to the Bay Area, Stephen Curry has earned respect around the league.

On Friday, an Eastern Conference All-Star had high praise for Golden State’s point guard.

In a live Instagram video with hoops skills coach Pep Stanciel, Jayson Tatum ranked Curry as one of the top 20 NBA players of all-time. According to the young Boston Celtics’ forward, Curry changed basketball.

Via Chris Montano on Twitter:

I was going to say Steph changed the game, bro. They don’t want you to shoot mid-range anymore — it’s just trey balls.

Tatum’s assessment of Curry’s impact on the game isn’t far off. After drilling a record 402 3-pointers during the 2015-16 season, Curry was a driving force in ushering a new wave of basketball from beyond the arc.

The 22-year-old has laced up against Curry four times in his career, averaging 13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

In 2018, Curry put on a show when Tatum and the Celtics traveled to Oakland’s Oracle Arena. The Davidson product dropped 49 points on 16-of-24 shooting from the field. Curry recorded eight three-pointers, with five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Injuries held Curry out for both matchups with Tatum during the Duke product’s All-Star season. Curry and Tatum will have to wait till the 2020-21 season for their next matchup.

Watch: Steph Curry tells Javale McGee he can drop 60 points on ‘everybody’

Stephen Curry is confident when it comes to scoring the basketball.

While the NBA season is on hold, Stephen Curry has been active with his time under quarantine. When the Golden State Warriors’ point guard isn’t busy working towards the fight against COVID-19, Curry has been chiming in on social media.

On Friday, Curry jumped in with his former teammate JaVale McGee on Instagram. During their live video, the Los Angeles Lakers’ center asked Curry about his lethal scoring talent.

JM: What team or player on that team that you know is guarding you, do you look at and be like — ‘oh yeah, I’m getting 60 tonight.’

SC: Oh … Everybody.

JM: What is going on? Steph Curry just took shots at every player.

SC: Quarantine done changed me. What’s next?

JM: I’m not going to lie — I was not expecting that answer.

SC: I gave it just for you. That was just for you.

Watch McGee go into a frenzy after Curry’s answer, via Chris Montano on Twitter:

After winning back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards and a scoring title, it’s not a surprise Curry is confident in his ability to fill it up. However, during his 10 seasons in the NBA, Curry has yet to drop 60 points on anyone in his career.

The Davidson product has recorded 50 or more points on six different occasions during his time in the association, with his high of 54 coming against the New York Knicks in 2013.

Only four players have registered 60 points as members of the Golden State Warriors, with one being Curry’s fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson.

Once the NBA returns to game action, Curry will have 17 games left on the 2019-20 calendar to back up his 60 point claim.
