Alabama takes down Kentucky 49-21, wins SEC West

Alabama has no issues defeating Kentucky on the road. The Crimson Tide has booked a trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

On the back of another stellar performance from quarterback Jalen Milroe, Alabama earned a huge win on the road against SEC East foe, Kentucky, with a final score of 49-21.

With this win, the Crimson Tide are crowned the SEC West champions and have booked a trip to Atlanta for the conference championship game.

To start the game, Alabama scored 21 unanswered points. The Wildcats ultimately found the end zone a few times, but it wasn’t close to being enough to stay competitive.

Heading into this matchup, head coach Nick Saban admitted this was probably the most banged up the team has been all year. Notably missing was star wide receiver Jermaine Burton, who was out with an illness.

Burton’s absence on the field wasn’t felt in the box score, as Milroe completed 15 passes on 22 attempts for 234 yards, three passing touchdowns and an interception. He also added on 36 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Alabama now looks ahead to Week 12, when the Crimson Tide return home to face Chattanooga.

Dallas Turner, Kool-Aid McKinstry named Lott Trophy semi-finalists

Two Alabama defensive standouts are recognized as semi-finalists for the Lott Trophy

The Lott IMPACT Trophy recognizes the nation’s top college football defensive player who exemplifies Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity.

Alabama football’s Kool-Aid McKinstry and Dallas Turner were recently named as semifinalists for the trophy.

Both McKinstry and Turner are stars on the field and leaders in the locker room, they are now one step closer to being recognized as the top IMPACT player in the country.

In 2005, Alabama linebacker Demeco Ryans won the award and Will Anderson Jr. won it just last season in 2022. Only on school has had back-to-back Lott Trophy award winners: UCLA in 2013 and 2014.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow McKinstry and Turner as the 2023 season progresses.

LSU vs. Alabama by the numbers

Here’s how LSU stacks up to Alabama on paper.

Its once again LSU/Alabama week.

Over the last 20 years or so, this has become one of the most highly anticipated matchups in the SEC.

It’s a game that typically features several future first-round picks on both sides and always carries some sort of SEC implications.

It’s another big one this year. ESPN’s College GameDay will be there this week, making it the 12th time the show’s appeared at this game. That ties it with Ohio State and Penn State for the most featured matchup.

There’s plenty of narrative to go around, too. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] notched a signature win in year one last year by going for two to pull the upset in overtime.

But here, we’ll focus on the numbers. Here’s how Alabama and LSU stack up on paper.

Photo gallery: Arkansas’ 24-21 loss to No. 11 Alabama

Arkansas came up short yet again against Alabama, and dropped a hard-fought 24-21 decision to the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

One-possession losses are becoming harder to swallow this season.

Arkansas has lost four games by one score, the lone holdout being Texas A&M which was a 12-point defeat two weeks ago.

Alabama’s 24-21 victory in which the Razorbacks rallied but ultimately came up short was the 17th consecutive time the Crimson Tide emerged victorious against Arkansas.

KJ Jefferson threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns, while Arkansas ran for 100 yards as a team, but couldn’t overcome the lack of production in the first half, which saw Alabama lead 21-6 at intermission.

The Razorbacks have one more game before a bye week, against Mississippi State next week in Fayetteville at 11 a.m.

A top-10 shakeup in latest US LBM Coaches Poll doesn’t move Alabama

Alabama’s 56-7 win over Middle Tennessee was enough to keep the Tide ranked No. 3!

Alabama football’s 56-7 win over Middle Tennessee in Week 1 was dominant and many worries regarding the team were alleviated. However, it was not enough to move Alabama up in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Georgia remains the No. 1 team in the nation after a win against Tennessee-Martin and Michigan stays sandwiched in between the Dawgs and the Tide after beating Eastern Carolina.

Alabama will have a true test next week as the Tide host the No. 10 Texas Longhorns for the second installment of the home-and-home series that began in 2022 with a one-point Alabama win.

‘SEC Nation’ will broadcast live from Tuscaloosa for Texas vs. Alabama

“SEC Nation” will be live from Tuscaloosa ahead of Alabama’s Week 2 matchup against Texas.

Alabama’s Week 2 matchup against the Texas Longhorns is already attracting plenty of national attention after last year’s one-point Crimson Tide win on the road in Austin, Texas. Tuscaloosa will host SEC Network’s Saturday morning show “SEC Nation” on Sept. 9.

The Longhorns will join the SEC in 2024 but will play out the 2023 season as a member of the Big 12, which makes this an interesting soon-to-be conference game.

With this being the rematch of the 2022 nail-biter, fans are eager to see how both playoff-hopefuls conduct themselves early in the season with numerous impact players from last season gone.

SEC Nation won’t be alone in broadcasting live from Tuscaloosa, as “Marty & McGee” will be live prior to the start of SEC Nation. The announcement was made this morning via Twitter.

Alabama names its starting quarterback, and it’s not who you think

Interesting

When offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] left for Alabama and took quarterback [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] with him, many [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] fans wondered what would happen in Tuscaloosa.

Well, we found out Friday. The Crimson Tide decided against starting Buchner and went with [autotag]Jalen Milroe[/autotag] as their signal caller. It’s not much of a shock to me; I always had issues with Buchner’s game, especially his throwing ability.

Even with a change of scenery, Buchner wouldn’t suddenly become a better passer. The selection of Milroe backs that up. You could even argue that Alabama’s choice behind center is a better runner as well.

It goes to show you the grass isn’t always greener and even though Buchner would not have been the starter ahead of Sam Hartman, he could have learned from the veteran and taken back the starting job next season.

The best and worse case scenario for Alabama in 2023

ESPN analysts predicted the best case and worst case scenarios look like for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team in 2023.

In the 2023 college football season, fans from across the country are hoping to see the Crimson Tide dynasty ride off into the sunset. After a two-loss regular season in 2022, some are beginning to question whether Alabama has lost the exclusive right to the throne. Georgia enters the new season with eyes set on winning a third-consecutive national championship.

Over the course of the 2023 offseason, Alabama lost many key contributors from last year. Quarterback Bryce Young, outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr., and running back Jahmyr Gibbs all left for the NFL, along with a few others. The Crimson Tide also fell victim to the transfer portal a few times. Overall, the starting lineup for Week 1 is still somewhat of a mystery, but it will certainly be loaded with a fair amount of young, inexperienced players.

Because of such uncertainty, experts are unsure as to whether or not Alabama is a championship-caliber team this season. The Coaches Poll has the Tide ranked No. 3, while the AP Poll has them at No. 4.

ESPN recently took the top 25 teams in the nation and listed their best and worst-case scenarios for the 2023 season. For Alabama, there’s a stark difference between the two.

For the ceiling, Alabama is a national championship hopeful.

“The roster, top to bottom, is championship-caliber,” writes ESPN’s Alex Scarborough. “Finishing in the top three of the recruiting rankings virtually every season for the past decade will do that. But at key positions, Alabama needs things to break exactly right.”

Scarborough mentions the need for elite talent at positions that don’t have a clear-cut starter, like at quarterback. He goes on to write,

“What’s more, the Tide needs to develop at receiver, and quickly, after taking a big step back last year in terms of creating separation and drops. Do that, and the offense will be solid enough to navigate a tricky SEC schedule. Remember, Alabama’s two losses last season came on the road and on the final play. And this season, both of those games — LSU and Tennessee — are at home.”

As for the floor for this team, it’s rough. Scarborough predicts, at its worst, the team will suffer three losses.

“The offense has a lot of what-ifs. Almost too many, in fact. Everyone will focus on the quarterback, but the lackluster play at receiver is almost as glaring an issue. Bryce Young was just so good that he covered up for it. Unless Ja’Corey Brooks or Isaiah Bond or someone else steps up in a big way, Alabama will struggle to score in crunch time. And if that happens, go ahead and chalk up back-to-back losses to LSU and Tennessee. From there, it’s hard to see Alabama winning both against Texas and on the road at Texas A&M.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football as the 2023 season approaches.

Social Media ignites over a picture of Nick Saban smiling

Nick Saban smiles after the first practice of the fall. College Football fans from across the nation see it as a threat.

Nick Saban is one of the most intimidating figures in collegiate athletics. The legendary coach is known for being serious, shouting at players and coaches, and throwing headsets. Recently, a picture of Saban smiling lit X, formerly known as Twitter, on fire.

College Football fans from across the country chimed in to give their take on ‘Smiling Saban.’

Many perceived it to be a threat. Saban is happy, which means Alabama must be returning to the championship-quality football that’s expected of the Crimson Tide.

There were plenty of hilarious comments being made about the picture, which was originally shared to X by Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News at the first press conference of fall practice.

Alabama football has a target on its back in 2023

Alabama football looks to return to the College Football Playoffs, but 12 teams will try to get in the way.

There is a heavy sense of doubt surrounding this 2023 Alabama football team. Just two seasons ago, the Tide appeared in a national title game. Last season, Alabama finished the season as a top-five team and won the Sugar Bowl. Nick Saban and his program are overdue for a record-breaking season.

The upcoming season poses its fair share of challenges for the Crimson Tide. A tough home game against Texas will be a big test in Week 2. Then there’s the difficulty of facing an SEC schedule.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire believes that other programs aren’t buying into the doubt. Conn has Alabama listed as one of the few teams in the nation that has a target on its back.

“Nick Saban has been the king of college football ever since returning Alabama to their former glory,” writes Conn. “He guided the Tide to six national titles since his return to the collegiate game in 2007. Because of his success, every team will give them their best shot.”

Alabama’s season begins on Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee at home in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover the Crimson Tide as the 2023 season approaches.
