Could a Crimson Tide reunion happen in Dallas?

Patrick Surtain is slated to be the first cornerback drafted in the 2021 NFL draft. One popular spot for him is the Dallas Cowboys …

There are plenty of former Alabama stars in the NFL, who are spread out all across the league. With the 2021 draft quickly approaching and mock drafts heating up, numerous teams could select another Alabama player to add to their roster.

One of those teams could be the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys already have former Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper on their roster, but added former Crimson Tide cornerback Trevon Diggs in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft.

In his rookie season, Diggs played in 12 games where he recorded 14 pass deflections, three interceptions and a forced fumble.

Now, the Cowboys may look to add to their secondary by drafting another Alabama star, Patrick Surtain II.

Surtain recently spoke on the possibility of playing alongside Diggs in the NFL.

Urban Meyer likes where Jags’ CB group is after free agent additions

The Jaguars coach is happy with the moves the team made in the secondary, specifically at the cornerback position.

As much as Jacksonville struggled defensively last season, it’s not a surprise that the team was aggressive in addressing that side of the ball in free agency. Looking at the cornerback group specifically, the team drafted C.J. Henderson ninth overall last season, and though he looked promising before injuries ended his rookie campaign, it was clear that the position needed to be addressed this offseason.

In addition to re-signing corners Sidney Jones IV and Tre Herndon, the team added Shaquill Griffin from Seattle on a big deal, and he will likely line up opposite Henderson in 2021.

When asked about the group Friday, coach Urban Meyer said he’s pleased.

“…so we have three guys that we feel are [great],” he said. “One was a second-rounder [CB Sidney Jones IV], but obviously Shaq[uill Griffin], we feel very strong about. CJ has gone through his labrum surgery and he’s doing very well. Tre Herndon is another guy that has done some very good things here. I really like his competitiveness.

“So, I really like where we’re at with the four corners and that was obviously after d-line, that’s right where we went was to go fix the corner position.”

In addition to Griffin, the Jags helped out their safety group with the addition of Rayshawn Jenkins from the Chargers. They’ll hope that these moves are enough to noticeably improve the unit, which ranked sixth-worst in the NFL in passing defense in 2020.

Prices too high for Packers in CB free agent market?

The Packers are sorting through the cornerback options in free agency, but so far the prices have been too high.

The Green Bay Packers are one of only a few teams that have yet to sign an unrestricted free agent since the start of the new league year.

A team strapped by the salary cap hasn’t found any bargains at positions of need, especially cornerback, so the waiting continues.

According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, the Packers have discovered “the price to be too high” on several different options at cornerback, a position the team has been “exploring” in free agency.

Several of the top cornerbacks, including William Jackson, Shaquill Griffin, Ronald Darby and Patrick Peterson, have signed new deals worth $10 million or more per year.

Although the cornerbacks are flying off the free-agent board, several still remain. Going into Friday, veterans such as Richard Sherman, Adoree Jackson, Malcolm Butler, Janoris Jenkins and Xavier Rhodes are still available.

The Packers might be able to get involved as time goes on and prices drop.

The Chicago Bears will soon add Kyle Fuller to the pool, but Huber’s source didn’t expect the Packers to be players for the former All-Pro. General manager Brian Gutekunst signed Fuller to an offer sheet in 2018, but the Bears matched. Fuller will likely have a big market once he’s officially a free agent.

The Packers lack the wiggle room under the cap to take on a big contract, complicating matters even in a depressed free-agent market. After needing to make a number of moves to get under the cap, this always looked like a team needing to bargain shop in free agency.

The Packers brought back slot cornerback Chandon Sullivan on the right of first refusal restricted tender, but Kevin King, a starter on the perimeter for the last few years, is an unrestricted free agent and still unsigned. It’s unclear if the Packers have any interest in returning King in 2021 or if finding an upgrade over the up-and-down second-round pick from 2017 is a priority.

Finding the right veteran cornerback in free agency could be a difference-making decision for the Packers’ 2021 defense. King, while playing opposite of 2020 All-Pro Jaire Alexander, struggled with the volume of targets thrown into his coverage. A real upgrade at the No. 2 cornerback spot could help the Packers transform from a good defense into a borderline great one this season.

Detroit Lions interviewing Rams CB coach Aubrey Pleasant for DB coach job

NFL Network’s Steve Wyche is reporting that the Detroit Lions plan to interview Los Angeles Rams cornerbacks coach Aubrey Pleasant, a Flint native, for their secondary coach position.

NFL Network’s Steve Wyche is reporting that the Detroit Lions plan to interview Los Angeles Rams cornerbacks coach Aubrey Pleasant for their secondary coach position. This would be considered a promotion, so the Rams are unable to block him from interviewing.

When Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley was hired as the LA Chargers head coach, our brother site Rams Wire listed Pleasant as their top candidate to replace him.

“Pleasant would make a ton of sense as the Rams’ next defensive coordinator,” Rams Wire’s Cameron DaSilva said. “He just finished his fourth season as the Rams’ cornerbacks coach, working under both Staley and Wade Phillips. The Rams have had one of the best cornerback units in the league in recent years, led by players such as Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams, Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, Trumaine Johnson and Troy Hill.”

The Rams’ opted to hire former-Falcons DC/interim coach Raheem Morris for the position and it’s no surprise that Pleasant would be open to exploring other opportunities after being passed over — and Detroit makes a lot of sense considering he is a Flint native.

Pleasant works with several organizations to help Flint residents who have been impacted by the city’s compromised water supply. In the video below, you can see Pleasant’s passion when talked about his My Cause, My Cleats campaign.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbDlfza85TQ

Pleasant began his coaching career in the state as well, starting out at Grand Blanc high school in 2010. He then joined the University of Michigan for two seasons before the NFL came calling. He took a position as a coaching intern with the Cleveland Browns during the 2013 training camp, then joined Washington that same season as an assistant. A year later he was promoted to defensive quality control, where he stayed for two years before taking the Rams position.

Over the last decade, Pleasant has quickly grown to be a highly respected coach. Before he left for the Chargers, Staley had its to say about Pleasant:

“Aubrey Pleasant is one of the elite coaches in the league,” Staley said via Rams Wire. “Aubrey, all you’ve got to do is ask Jalen Ramsey, ask Darious Williams, ask Troy Hill about their relationship with Aubrey. He’s a tireless worker. He’s a really talented communicator. He can see the game in all levels of the defense. Sometimes as a secondary guy, okay, do you just know the back end. He knows how the front and the back tie in together.”

Ok coach, let’s see what Ramsey has to say about Pleasant:

Pleasant is an ascending coach with strong ties to the state, and if he is a talented enough coach to make Ramsey a better player, the Lions would be wise to take a long hard look at adding him to their organization.

Cowboys News: Rolling over but not playing dead, Quinn’s base defense, new QB/President combo

Also, the Cowboys connection to Philip Rivers on his retirement, grading the Dallas cornerbacks, and searching for the bright spots of 2020.

The coaching carousel keeps spinning around the league, as Kellen Moore has had his chat with the Eagles brass and Cowboys Nation waits to hear what happened. In Dallas, the club has found its defensive line coach, bringing another of Dan Quinn’s former pupils onto the payroll.

In other news, we’re looking for bright spots in the 2020 season, breaking down the Xs and Os of Quinn’s preferred defensive scheme, sizing up the Cowboys cornerbacks about to hit free agency and talking cap space. There’s also big question marks all of a sudden regarding the draft given that there will be no scouting combine; how will that affect the Cowboys’ big board? With news of Philip Rivers retiring, we’ve also got a Cowboys connection to the prolific passer… as well as how the greatest quarterback in Dallas history is now part of the same trivia answer as newly-inaugurated US president Joe Biden. News and Notes, coming right up.

Xavier Woods new add to Cowboys’ injury report, McCarthy ‘optimistic’ on other DBs

As Donovan Wilson, Anthony Brown, and Trevon Diggs look set to return to action, starting safety Xavier Woods now has a groin injury.

Three members of the Cowboys’ banged-up secondary look set to make their return to the field this Sunday versus San Francisco. But another defensive back has popped up on the injury report and is a little less of a sure thing, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Of safety Donovan Wilson and cornerbacks Anthony Brown and Trevon Diggs, all of whom have missed multiple games, McCarthy expects them to be ready to go for Week 15.

“I would put all three of them in the same category: I’m optimistic they’ll play on Sunday,” McCarthy said during his Friday press conference. “The work has been good so far, they’ve participated in the mock game that we just had. So far, everything looks good.”

Things look a little murkier, perhaps, for safety Xavier Woods. The fourth-year Louisiana Tech product was added to Thursday’s injury report with a groin issue. He was limited in that day’s practice and was seen working off to the side.

As has become the norm, McCarthy placed heavy importance on Saturday’s work session as a determining factor in whether Woods will suit up.

“I think he’ll be good to go on Sunday,” McCarthy told reporters, “but we’ll see what he gets done in practice tomorrow. Just being smart with him.”

This season has been particularly hard on the Dallas defensive backs, with a rash of injuries creating a revolving door among cornerbacks and safeties. As Rob Phillips pointed out on the team’s official website, “Through 13 games, the Cowboys’ top four corners – Chidobe Awuzie, rookie Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis – have yet to be active in the same game together.”

The yearlong secondary shuffle has necessitated the elevation of several practice squad players, too; Saivion Smith and Chris Westry suddenly found themselves on the field this past Sunday against Cincinnati.

Woods has missed just three games out of 61 thus far as a pro. But just because he’s been out there doesn’t mean he’s always been a difference-maker. In a season where many fans and analysts alike have openly criticized the effort and hustle of the Cowboys defense, Woods made himself the poster child for half-hearted play back in early October.

When asked about effort, Woods said, “The effort’s been good. On certain plays, some guys- I mean, me included- there may be a lack. But overall, the effort is there. We’re in the NFL. You don’t expect guys to [go] full speed for 70 plays; that’s not possible.”

According to Pro Football Reference, Woods was allowing the third-highest passer rating before last Sunday’s showdown with the Bengals.

Even still, Dallas would no doubt prefer to have their starter ready to go this week to complement the expected return of Wilson, Brown, and Diggs.

Chiefs coaching staff confident in cornerback depth in wake of injuries

COVID-19 preparation has helped Kansas City Chiefs cornerbacks stay ready for injury adversity.

The Kansas City Chiefs have shown a lot of confidence in some young and untested players in the secondary this season. Despite recent injuries and a suspension at the position, they remain confident in their cornerback depth moving. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo talked about the preparation behind getting these guys ready to play on Sunday. A major reason why everyone has been ready to step up is the message that the team has been preaching with the COVID-19 pandemic in mind.

“That’s a credit to Sam (Madison) and Dave Merritt who work with all those guys,” Spagnuolo told reporters on Thursday. “We felt going in, and we talked about this as a staff with the whole COVID situation that we had to have guys always ready to go, and then we didn’t know what was going to happen with what we’re dealing with in the world. So, the guys, the coaches, have taken that to heart. They’ve prepared all of these guys—corners, safeties, linebackers, D-line—like they could have to step up and play on a Friday.”

This group has been stressed from Week 1, without starter Bashaud Breeland out there and an array of injuries. When it comes to the cornerback group playing well through these first three games, Spagnuolo feels that the defensive line play has helped them out a little bit.

“Listen, we have been bumped and bruised out there at the corner, certainly losing Breezy (Bashaud Breeland) kind of hurt right from the beginning, but Rashad Fenton has done a great job, LJ Sneed was playing really good football. I feel really terrible for him in dealing with that injury, but it’s part of the league. And hopefully, we can get CW (Charvarius Ward) back, I know he’s going to have to deal with that hand a little bit. But they’ve got to step up. Our corners are really needed in the package that we play, and fortunately for us, our D-line has done a decent enough job that it’s made it a little bit easier for the corners on the outside.”

The next man up mentality is something that this team has preached each and every season, but it’s not always so easy to execute. This year the secondary has really taken the words of Coach Sam Madison to heart. They’re hungry and waiting for whatever opportunity may come their way.

Well, what our saying in the room is, ‘Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready,'” Madison said. “Throughout training camp, we put a lot of these guys in a lot of different situations, as far as playing the nickel position, playing corner. With Coach Spags’ defense sometimes they have to go back and play safety, different things of that nature. We put them through a lot of different things, and they answered the bell.”

They worked hard throughout training camp to prepare for any possible scenario and so far they’ve been able to combat the adversity they’ve faced. Madison has specifically been impressed with how the two players expected to get the start on Sunday against the Patriots have stepped up in the wake of injuries.

“Rashad (Fenton), he stepped up as soon as Ward went down a couple of weeks ago and then he’s been playing phenomenal,” Madison continued. “Once again Sneed goes down and Ward was able to step right into it and didn’t miss a beat. He didn’t hesitate going out there, even with his hand situation that he feels is a whole lot better this week. It’s always the next man up. We’ve thrown a lot of different things at these guys and they just respond. Now we’re going to be getting Breeland back next week. Hopefully, we can get through this game and come out victorious, but still, they know that they’re going to be relied on a lot to play man-to-man, play the different zones and all the different things that we do. They’re up to the challenge. That’s the one great thing, they never back down from a challenge.”

The Patriots receivers will certainly pose a challenge for the Chiefs’ cornerbacks in Week 4. The unit is headlined by veteran Julian Edelman and former first-round draft pick N’Keal Harry. Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, and special teams ace Matthew Slater round out the group, offering a variety of different skill sets. As Madison explained, though, his cornerback group won’t back down from a challenge even if they’re banged up and depleted of depth.

Cowboys place CB Chidobe Awuzie on IR, promote from PS

The Dallas Cowboys made a roster move on Saturday, prior to facing off against the Seattle Seahawks in their Week 3 matchup in the Pacific Northwest. Already ruled out of action for the week and thought to be out for multiple weeks, things became official for cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, as the club has placed him on injured reserve.

Awuzie will now be out through at least their first NFC East game, Week 5 against the New York Giants. To fill his spot, free agent signing and second-year corner Saivion Smith has been signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The team also took advantage of the 2020 rules and has elevated practice squad players CB Deante Burton and OT Eric Smith to the active roster.

Awuzie, a fourth-year corner, seemed to have injured his hamstring in the game against the Falcons. He had started for Anthony Brown who went on IR the week prior with a rib injury. Dallas will continue to start rookie corner Trevon Diggs on one side. Fourth-year corner Jourdan Lewis and free-agent Daryl Worley are expected to be the other key corners in use, as well as veteran Brandon Carr. Carr was signed right before the season to the practice squad and was active for 17 snaps against the Falcons in Week 2. He was signed as a safety, but will have to resume corner duties as injuries have ravaged Dallas’ already suspect secondary.

Smith went undrafted out of Alabama, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an udrafted free agent in 2019. He never appeared in a game so Sunday will be his professional debut.

Smith last played football for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL’s inaugural, then defunct season. He was once a top high-school prospect who finished his college career at Alabama after trasnferring from LSU.

The Florida native started 12 games as a junior for the Crimson Tide in 2018 and racked up 60 tackles, three interceptions, and five pass breakups, Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, Smith seemingly has the physical profile necessary to play in the league.

Burton signed with the Cowboys down the stretch of the 2019 season. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner came off of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad and has a wide receiver background before making the conversion to defense.

Both players seem to have leapfrogged 2019 UDFA and 6-foot-4 Chris Westry, who still remains on the practice squad.

As for the tackle, Eric Smith, he has to be seen as a precaution against a second-straight week of not having Tyron Smith available. Last week, Smith was replaced by Brandon Knight, who fared very well while UDFA rookie Terence Steele continued to struggle in replacing right tackle La’el Collins. Eric Smith was brought up last week as well.
