Titans add TE David Wells, CB Deante Burton among 4 roster moves

The Titans made four roster moves ahead of practice on Saturday.

The Tennessee Titans mad four roster moves ahead of their next practice on Saturday. The team announced the signings of tight end David Wells and cornerback Deante Burton, the latter of which was reported earlier in the day.

In addition to those moves, the Titans waived defensive back Terrell Bonds and wide receiver Brandon Lewis.

Here’s what we wrote about Burton earlier in the day:

After going undrafted out of Kansas State in 2018, Burton, who converted from wide receiver to cornerback, was signed by the Atlanta Falcons.

He has appeared in 11 games (no starts) since then, eight of which came with the Cowboys the past three seasons. Burton has eight combined tackles and one forced fumble in his career and has done the majority of his work on special teams. He has also appeared in games with the Houston Texans.

Wells went undrafted out of San Diego State in 2018. He has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals.

The 27-year-old has appeared in three games during his career, all of which came in 2021 with the Cardinals. Wells played 12 snaps on offense and one on special teams, but failed to record a stat.

The Titans saw injuries to cornerback Chris Jackson and tight end Tommy Hudson in the preseason opener to the Baltimore Ravens. It isn’t clear if either is serious, but it’s possible these moves are in response to that.

Report: Titans sign former Cowboys CB Deante Burton

The Titans have reportedly added a cornerback to their roster.

The Tennessee Titans have reportedly added a cornerback to their offseason roster ahead of practice on Saturday afternoon.

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Titans have signed cornerback Deante Burton, who spent the 2021 campaign on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.

There could be a few reasons why Tennessee made this move.

For starters, the Titans’ secondary depth options did not perform well in the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Adding to that, cornerback Chris Jackson sustained an unspecified knee injury in the contest.

We should get our first look at Burton in practice on Saturday.

Cavalry Coming: Cowboys getting injured, suspended players back, but will Prescott start Sunday?

Michael Gallup, Trysten Hill, and Francis Bernard will enter a 21-day window of evaluation; they can be added to the active roster anytime. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Despite an impressive 5-1 start, the Cowboys haven’t even been playing at full strength. Several players who have been sitting on the shelf for a variety of reasons will be making their way back, though questions remain at a few key positions as the team gets into the swing of things after the bye week.

Wide receiver Michael Gallup leads the group of Cowboys players designated Monday for return from the injured reserve list. Gallup suffered a calf injury in the season opener in Tampa and has been sidelined since.

Also set to return is linebacker Francis Bernard. He injured his hamstring during training camp and started the season on the injured reserve list.

Defensive tackle Trysten Hill began the 2020 campaign on the Physically Unable to Perform List with a knee injury sustained in the early part of last season. He will also be eligible to return to practice.

Gallup, Bernard, and Hill will now enter a three-week practice window; the Cowboys have 21 days of evaluation to decide whether put each of them on the active roster. Any of them could added in time for the Week 8 game.

With the players taking last week off, Monday marked the first practice back for offensive tackle La’el Collins after serving a five-game suspension. The coaching staff has said they will take the week to gauge his readiness for Sunday night’s matchup in Minnesota.

Terence Steele has played well on a fill-in basis for him; the team has implied that Collins is not necessarily guaranteed to reclaim his starting role after missing five weeks of action.

Most important for most of Cowboys Nation, quarterback Dak Prescott was expected to be held out of the first practice of the week as he recovers from a calf strain suffered on the final play of Week 6’s overtime win in New England.

The team has stated they’ll take a wait-and-see approach with Prescott; he is slated to begin practicing again on Wednesday. Dallas is “optimistic” he’ll be ready to go in time for the Halloween date with the Vikings.

Additionally on a busy roster day for the Cowboys, the team moved cornerback Deante Burton from the Injured/Practice Squad list back to the practice squad roster.

Cowboys roster shuffle: Trevon Diggs activated, two others added to IR

The Cowboys activated rookie CB Trevon Diggs from the IR, and placed two other players on the IR Saturday.

The Dallas Cowboys are getting secondary help ahead of their Week 15 matchup with San Francisco.

The team activated cornerback Trevon Diggs from the Injured Reserve on Saturday, according to Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken.

Diggs last played November 8 against Pittsburgh, where he fractured his foot late in the contest. The rookie defensive back has been inconsistent at times, but has shown plenty glimpses of the coverage ability and ball skills that made him a first-round draft talent in some scout’s eyes.

Diggs is expected to return to the lineup Sunday vs the 49ers. The Cowboys are also anticipating CB Chidobe Awuzie (COVID tracing) and S Donovan Wilson (groin) to suit up this week. The Dallas secondary should get a boost from the return of these three starters.

Diggs figures to be the focal point of the Cowboys secondary in the future, and any more experience he can garner should be beneficial.

While the club removed one player from the IR, it added two more, LB Justin March and CB Deante Burton.

This season is March’s third in Dallas, and he had became a significant contributor on special teams. The 27-year old defender played over 50% of special teams in all 11 games he was active for all year.

Burton appeared in the last three games for Dallas, but injured his shoulder in the win over Cincinnati. Burton had primarily played special teams for the Cowboys but saw 14 defensive snaps last week before being injured.

With the timing of their injuries, Burton and March are both out for the remainder of the season.

Robinson, Saivion Smith leave game as Cowboys secondary continues to unravel

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have the stiffest of competition challenging their defense in Week 14, and they’ve been able to hold steady against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team has forced three fumbles and recovered all three, leading to 17 points. The Bengals, who have struggled on offense all season have been able to move the ball. Dallas’ quest to hold on to their 13-point lead may have to be pulled off without their starting cornerbacks.

No not that starting cornerback, Trevon Diggs has been out for a few weeks. No, not Anthony Brown; he has a rib injury. No, not Chidobe Awuzie, he tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Rashard Robinson (leg), signed to the 53-man roster earlier this month, was knocked out of the game a few plays after Saivion Smith (hand) was knocked out.

The Cowboys lined up in nickel with Deante Burton and Chris Westry joining Jourdan Lewis on the field for a third down early in the fourth quarter. Burton made the tackle on a scrambling Brandon Allen, but on the fourth down Allen found Tee Higgins against Burton’s coverage for an 18-yard gain and a first down.

It was later reported Smith was in the locker room being evaluated, but both he and Robinson returned to the game after Westry had to be escorted off the field with his own undisclosed injury.

Cowboys sign Adam Redmond, elevate two CBs ahead Thanksgiving

The Dallas Cowboys a number of minor roster moves, including signing C Adam Redmond, and promoting CB’s Deante Burton and Rashard Robinson.

The Dallas Cowboys made a few roster maneuvers ahead of Thursday’s crucial Thanksgiving showdown with the Washington Football Team. The club had to address their continued issues with depth along the offensive line and in the secondary. Using the league’s roster rules to their fullest, they have a bit more solid footing going into the game on a short week.

After being elevated from the practice squad the previous two games, the Cowboys signed Center Adam Redmond to the 53-man roster. With Tyler Biadasz hitting IR last week, Redmond will continue to backup Joe Looney.

Every week each team can promote two practice squad players the day before that club’s game starts, and Dallas used both of these two extra roster spots this week to add depth to the defensive backfield, as CB Anthony Brown is not expected to suit up at this point, even though Brown is listed as questionable.

Cornerbacks Deante Burton and Rashard Robinson were both elevated to the active roster on Wednesday.

Burton saw 13 special teams snaps in his lone call up this season during Dallas’ Week 3 loss to Seattle. Robinson, a fourth-round pick by the 49ers in 2016, played his first snaps of the year in the Cowboys recent win over Minnesota.

Linebacker Luke Gifford was officially placed on the Reserve/Suspended list on Tuesday after violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. The loss of Gifford cleared the roster space that was used to sign Redmond.[listicle id=656934][lawrence-newsletter]

Cowboys place CB Chidobe Awuzie on IR, promote from PS

The Dallas Cowboys made a roster move on Saturday, prior to facing off against the Seattle Seahawks in their Week 3 matchup in the Pacific Northwest. Already ruled out of action for the week and thought to be out for multiple weeks, things became official for cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, as the club has placed him on injured reserve.

Awuzie will now be out through at least their first NFC East game, Week 5 against the New York Giants. To fill his spot, free agent signing and second-year corner Saivion Smith has been signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The team also took advantage of the 2020 rules and has elevated practice squad players CB Deante Burton and OT Eric Smith to the active roster.

Awuzie, a fourth-year corner, seemed to have injured his hamstring in the game against the Falcons. He had started for Anthony Brown who went on IR the week prior with a rib injury. Dallas will continue to start rookie corner Trevon Diggs on one side. Fourth-year corner Jourdan Lewis and free-agent Daryl Worley are expected to be the other key corners in use, as well as veteran Brandon Carr. Carr was signed right before the season to the practice squad and was active for 17 snaps against the Falcons in Week 2. He was signed as a safety, but will have to resume corner duties as injuries have ravaged Dallas’ already suspect secondary.

Smith went undrafted out of Alabama, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an udrafted free agent in 2019. He never appeared in a game so Sunday will be his professional debut.

Smith last played football for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL’s inaugural, then defunct season. He was once a top high-school prospect who finished his college career at Alabama after trasnferring from LSU.

The Florida native started 12 games as a junior for the Crimson Tide in 2018 and racked up 60 tackles, three interceptions, and five pass breakups, Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, Smith seemingly has the physical profile necessary to play in the league.

Burton signed with the Cowboys down the stretch of the 2019 season. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner came off of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad and has a wide receiver background before making the conversion to defense.

Both players seem to have leapfrogged 2019 UDFA and 6-foot-4 Chris Westry, who still remains on the practice squad.

As for the tackle, Eric Smith, he has to be seen as a precaution against a second-straight week of not having Tyron Smith available. Last week, Smith was replaced by Brandon Knight, who fared very well while UDFA rookie Terence Steele continued to struggle in replacing right tackle La’el Collins. Eric Smith was brought up last week as well.

Cowboys fill roster void with WR-turned-CB instead of promoting Olumba

The Cowboys chose to go off roster in plugging the void left by Brown, and they’re bringing in a good athlete with a chance to snare balls.

The Dallas Cowboys have a new member of their secondary, inking Deante Burton to a contract that will make him a member of the 53-man roster for at minimum the next three weeks. The move was necessary after the team had to place slot corner Anthony Brown on injured reserve following an arm injury suffered in the club’s Week 11 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Brown required surgery, ending his season. While Jourdan Lewis had already usurped Brown in the starting lineup, the loss of Brown thins out the depth at the cornerback position. The team has been working with five corners on the roster for much of the season, and now has the same number after claiming the 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner off of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

To this point of his career, Burton has not been a return man in the NFL, but did so in high school and had several big special teams plays in college at Kansas State. Dallas has struggled on special teams in multiple facets, so this acquisition could potentially be part of an attempt to solve that fraction of the season’s equation.

Coming from a practice squad, the Cowboys are required to keep Burton on their active roster for a minimum of three weeks, which means he’ll have a tryout with the team through at least the club’s December 5 road matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Earlier in the year, the club lost fifth-round pick Michael Jackson in a similar move when the Lions snagged the University of Miami product.

UDFA Chris Westry is on injured reserve, but the club saw Burton as a better fit than current practice squader Donovan Olumba, who was impressive in his preseason work but failed to make the team’s opening roster.

Behind starters Byron Jones and Chidobe Awuzie, Lewis is the only CB currently getting defense snaps. C.J. Goodwin has been a core special teams player for the Cowboys, but rarely sees the field on defense. He has just 20 snaps (2.9%) as opposed to 181 on teams (66.8%).

As for Burton, he was originally a UDFA of the Atlanta Falcons, joining the league in 2017 out of Kansas State, where he was a wide receiver.

During his time on the Falcons’ practice squad, he made the transition to defense. Perhaps the Cowboys are hoping his experience on offense could lead him to making better plays on the ball than the club has gotten. Dallas only has four interceptions through 10 games.

The 25-year-old has spent time with the Packers, Falcons for a second stint, and Texans before being on the Colts practice squad this year. He has three games under his belt and five total tackles, all of which came against the Philadelphia Eagles in one game each for the Falcons and Texans.

He also appeared in the playoff game for Houston, logging five special teams snaps.
