Four-star OL Cole Hutson stepping up as one of the leaders in Texas’ 2022 class

Four-star OL commit Cole Hutson has become one of Texas’ leaders in the 2022 class.

Going to Austin has become a “ritual” for four-star offensive lineman Cole Hutson since becoming a Texas commit. Not just to see his future team play live but also to be one of the main recruiters within the class.

He, four-star edge Derrick Brown, and three-star offensive lineman Connor Robertson have really stepped up as the vocal leaders. There is even a little interclass rivalry going on to see who can be the best recruiter between the three of them.

“Connor (Robertson) does a good, good job,” Hutson said when Longhorns Wire caught up with him last week. “Whenever me and Conner talk, it’s just different. Derrick (Brown) is on Twitter, saying he is the best and everything like that. Love Derrick but I think Connor has him beat by a little bit. It’s funny to see them go back and forth.”

As mentioned, Brown does a lot of his recruiting on social media. Whether it is quote tweeting prospects with a hook ’em emoji or hyping them up when Texas visit photos are posted, the Texarkana native creates a lot of buzz.

But with Hutson and Robertson on campus so often, they talk to the guys face to face. On the field, results may not have gone favorably over the past two weeks. But selling Texas itself and Steve Sarkisian has been the consistent message — especially to the offensive players.

“Trust the process. This is a brand new coaching staff and the more you look at it and the more detail you get, the more you kind of understand he’s (Steve Sarkisian) a genius. Coach Sark, in some of those games, I feel like we should not be a part of but he’s calling plays that are magnificent. You would never expect those to ever be called.”

Oklahoma State was one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the season for the Longhorns. Some of the top prospects in the country were in town, highlighted by five-star quarterback Arch Manning. Hutson said he was able to hang around him, alongside fellow offensive lineman Malik Agbo and Earnest Greene.

“Let’s just say we did a really good job this week with the guys that were there,” Hutson said. “We just really showed what it was going to be like at UT and made them understand what the missing piece was. It kind of clicked in their minds and hopefully later this month or in the near future we get some more guys to come help us to achieve that greatness.”

Seeing other up-front blockers in Austin was something Hutson lit up about when asked. Since his joint commitment with Robertson on July 2, there has yet to be another offensive lineman join the class. Agbo and Greene are two priority targets for who Texas needs to get in the class.

Hutson says it’s more than just football performance, though. Both guys are talented but after hanging out in Austin, their personalities are what really stood out.

“I talked to Coach (Kyle) Flood about it and he felt good about it,” said Hutson. “I really like both of them, personally. We really need them but also, they’re good people and you want good people to be on your team.”

Everything seems to be about more than just football for Hutson. One of the main reasons Texas was such a big attraction for Hutson was because of the coaching staff.

When Sarkisian departed from Alabama, so did some of his top assistants. Offensive line coach Kyle Flood was one of, if not the biggest, name to follow.

Hutson’s relationship with him has been the biggest driving force as to why Texas was his school of choice.

“He’s a great guy, a real honest guy,” said Hutson. “He acts like you’re a normal person. He does not act like you’re a recruit or act like you’re God. He treats you like a normal person. I really like that, plus, the things he has done to develop kids at Alabama and now he’s coming over here.”

Flood has a plan for offensive line recruiting over the next few seasons. If every box gets checked, there is an opportunity for something “really special” to happen in Austin.

Something you can tell Hutson is ecstatic to be a part of.

Three-star OL Connor Robertson commits to Texas

What a HUGE day for Kyle Flood. Texas landed commitments from Connor Robertson & Cole Hutson at the same time!

Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood had a tremendous day on Friday.

The Longhorns received a commitment from 2022 three-star offensive lineman Connor Robertson and four-star offensive lineman Cole Hutson at the same time.

Robertson is a local Austin native from Westlake High School. Steve Sarkisian and his staff originally extended an offer to the 6-foot-4, 296-pound lineman on Feb. 2 and he took an official visit to Texas on June 18.

Adding an all-state offensive lineman from the 6A-DI champions is a great get for Flood. On the 247Sports composite, Robertson is the No. 20 interior offensive lineman and the No. 546 overall player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he ranks No. 77.

Two potential offensive lineman that could commit to Texas on July 2

Texas should have a much better day on the recruiting front.

Over the last few days, the Longhorns missed out on three 2022 targets to other programs.

Three-star defensive lineman Kheanist Thompson chose to commit to UCF, four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks announced his commitment to Ohio State and big-bodied offensive lineman Cameron Williams decided to commit to Oregon on Thursday.

Williams arguably stung the most out of the three, although Texas joined the party late and offered him on May 5. However, the Longhorns should have a much better day on Friday.

Four-star interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson and three-star offensive tackle Connor Robertson are scheduled to announce their commitments on July 2. The Longhorns are in solid standings with each player and realistically could land both commitments in the same day.

Hutson is a 6-foot-5, 312-pound Frisco native that is rated the No. 13 interior offensive lineman in the 2022 cycle. He’s a three-sport athlete in football, baseball and track and field. In 2020, he earned first-team all-district honors as a junior for Frisco High School. Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Alabama remain involved in his recruitment as well.

Robertson is a local product out of Westlake High School. The 6-foot-4, 296-pound offensive lineman started at right tackle as a junior and helped Westlake to the Texas 6A D-1 state championship. Stanford and Texas appear to be the primary players in his recruitment.

Texas is of course still in the mix for big names such as Devon Campbell and Kelvin Banks, but landing Hutson and Robertson on Friday would be a huge win for the Longhorns and offensive line coach Kyle Flood.

Top IOL target Connor Robertson announces commitment date

Texas has the opportunity to pull someone from their own backyard with OL Connor Robertson. He announced he will be committing on July 2.

Nothing is better than pulling a recruit out of your own backyard. Especially from your own city.

Texas and Kyle Flood have that opportunity on Friday with three-star IOL prospect Connor Robertson. The Austin native announced he plans to commit July 2.

Robertson clearly prioritizes academic, takings summer trips to Northwestern and Stanford. Only his trip to Austin was an official visit; he chose to save the rest for football season.

Getting him to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in the fall should not be too difficult considering his hometown. No matter where Robertson commits on Friday, Texas will be a major player in his recruitment going forward.

Texas heavily leads on the 247Sports crystal ball. Four predictions have been made for the Longhorns with an average confidence level of seven. Most came after an offer was extended to Robertson on Feb. 2.

Robertson would be another Westlake prospect to play for Texas. Both Ehlinger brothers played under Tom Herman, while three walk-ons are expected to be on the roster next season. Zane Minor and Michael Taaffe will arrive in the fall.

Adding an all-state offensive lineman from the 6A-DI champions is a great get for Flood.

On the 247Sports composite, Robertson is the No. 20 interior offensive lineman and the No. 546 overall player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he ranks No. 77.

Four offensive recruits Texas should push for after Maalik Murphy’s commitment

Recruiting momentum is real and Texas must be able to capitalize after landing Maalik Murphy. Here are four prospects Texas should push for.

Getting Texas back on the national recruiting scene was one of the biggest tasks that Steve Sarkisian needed to accomplish early on. In-state recruiting was always going to sort itself out for a program such as Texas, but being able to dip into other states is what builds national championship-caliber teams.
