Getting Texas back on the national recruiting scene was one of the biggest tasks that Steve Sarkisian needed to accomplish early on. In-state recruiting was always going to sort itself out for a program such as Texas, but being able to dip into other states is what builds national championship-caliber teams.

A big step was taken on Saturday when five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy committed to the Longhorns. He ranks as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the country coming out of Gardena, California. Murphy has one of the highest ceilings in the entire 2022 class but will bring much more than just talent on the field.

Recruiting momentum is a real thing and Texas must be able to capitalize after bringing in a big-name quarterback. Sarkisian has the ability to land some of the best offensive talents in the country due to his resume at Alabama. Bringing in a five-star quarterback and the top in-state running back is a great foundation. Now, the Longhorns need to go after skill position players and offensive lineman.
