Texas Longhorns Team of the Decade: Offense Selections

The wrap up of the Texas Longhorns All-Decade Team with all of the selection on offense.

For the better part of the last two weeks, Longhorns Wire has been providing the best players at each position for Texas from 2010-2019. Here are the selections for the All-Decade team. Each position will have a link below with the original articles.

Quarterback

Ehlinger was the clear favorite for quarterback of a decade. His junior season saw the Austin Westlake product throw for the second-most yards in school history just behind Longhorns legend Colt McCoy. With a bowl game left to go, he has an opportunity to close in on the single-season mark of 3,859 yards set in 2008. Ehlinger only needs 398 yards to break it.

Ehlinger currently sits second all-time in Texas history for career passing yards (8,669) and touchdowns (65). Sam also sits third in rushing yards by a quarterback but is closing in fast on McCoy for second-most at 1,571.

2020 NFL Draft: Collin Johnson Scouting Profile

Collin Johnson will be making the jump to the NFL next season so how does his game stack up?

Collin Johnson WR Texas

Height: 6-6

Weight: 220

College Bio

College Stats

Collin Johnson is the third senior Longhorn that is profiled heading into the Senior Bowl and the NFL Draft. Johnson joins Devin Duvernay and Brandon Jones as seniors that will make the trip to Mobile, Alabama to work with NFL staffs for the Senior Bowl. Collin is looking to finish out his Longhorns career in the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Utah Utes on December 31st.

Strength

Collin Johnson stands out on the football field, not exactly difficult when you stand 6’6″. Johnson can be a weapon when teams get into the redzone as he towers over the defenders and he is a prime candidate to go up and get the ball at its highest catch point. Johnson can be the endzone fade mismatch when going towards the corner, basically put it up high where only he can get it.

His catch radius is probably his best asset, get the ball near Johnson and more often than not he is going to get the ball. The Longhorns’ wide receiver can make the circus level catches with some of the best hands at the position. He can make a name for himself at the next level with his ability to find a way to bring it down.

Weaknesses

Despite how he is able to catch the ball, Johnson provides no separation when running routes. For a player as tall as him, Collin Johnson hasn’t shown the ability to run by defenders so he will rely more on technique at the NFL level rather than athleticism. Looks very stiff when trying to change direction and coming in and out of breaks.

At times he struggles with dealing with physical corners who jam him at the line, not able to make up ground with less than ideal speed. Johnson does better with short or intermediate routes than he does on deep breaking routes. Relies more on his ability to catch passes over the top of defenders due to his size.

Bottom Line

Collin Johnson will get his opportunity to make the jump but he needs to become more refined in his route running due to lack of athleticism. He will find a role in the NFL due to his ability to catch anything near him.

Projection: Late Day Two, Early Day Three

Texas wide receivers of the decade

In the 2010s, Texas really struggled to find solid guys at the QB position. That made it difficult for some of the talented wide receivers.

Throughout the decade, Texas really struggled to find solid guys at the quarterback position. They never were fully consistent or the best player on the team. That made it difficult for some of the talented wide receivers on the team to fully make their mark.

The exception to this was Mike Davis, who was an outstanding receiver for the Longhorns in all four years on campus. While he never broke 1,000 yards in one season, what he did in his junior and senior year was score touchdowns. Having 15 in his final two years, it shot him up to the fifth most receiving touchdowns in Longhorn history.

Once Sam Ehlinger arrived on campus, the receivers for Texas got a lot better. Collin Johnson was one of those players, arguably being the most talented receiver of the three. Even though he was injured most of his senior season, Johnson put up great numbers in his junior season. Nearly getting to 1,000 yards in 2018, Johnson had some of his best games in the biggest matchups of the season for the Longhorns.

Then there is Devin Duvernay, whose 103 catches in 2019 is the second-most in a single season for Texas. He led the entire nation in catches this season and his 1,294 receiving yards were the most in the Big 12. He was Mr. Reliable for the Longhorns this season, making big play after big play.

In a decade where throwing the ball was not the strong suit of Texas, these three players rank inside the top 10 in all-time Longhorn receiving yards. A combined 47 receiving touchdowns, Davis, Johnson, and Duvernay are three of the best receivers to ever play in Austin.

Collin Johnson Has Opportunity To Improve Draft Stock

With the bowl game and Senior Bowl ahead, Texas Longhorns wide receiver Collin Johnson has time to impress NFL scouts.

When you look at Collin Johnson he has what NFL Scouts will fall in love with. He has the size to be a serious red zone threat and makes some miraculous catches that will leave your jaw on the floor. After posting career best numbers in every statistical category, the sky was the limit for Johnson. Unfortunately for the former four-star recruit, injuries have limited his season. Head Coach Tom Herman has said that Johnson will be available for the Alamo Bowl, and that could be the start that helps his draft stock rise.

Collin Johnson will have two games left to impress scouts ahead of the pre-draft workouts and team visits. Johnson has accepted an invite to the Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama in which he will get to work with a NFL coaching staff, another opportunity to show what Johnson does best.

His frame is more on the slender side but Johnson shows off that huge catch radius that coaches will love. He has very reliable hands as evident with some of the circus level snags he is able to come down with. During the Senior Bowl practices, Johnson has an opportunity to get coached up on his techniques to help him off the line. He can struggle with separation at the line but with a big frame, Johnson is still able to bring down his fair share of passes. Johnson needs to show that he can beat press coverage off the line if he wants to make it at the next level.

Unfortunately enough, Jaylon Johnson who has declared for the draft won’t play in the Alamo Bowl against Texas. Johnson was named to the 2019 Associated Press All-American second team and it would have been quite the challenge for Collin. Utah still has other playmakers on the defensive side of the ball to challenge the 6’6″ wide receiver.

There is still a long way to go before the NFL Draft but Collin Johnson has all the opportunity to rise up draft boards and it starts in the bowl game.

Mock Draft Roundup: Draft Wire Has Two Longhorns in Top 100

Two Texas Longhorns featured in latest mock draft for Draft Wire.

This time of year is big for NFL Draft media as they produce mock drafts almost weekly and the Draft Wire is no different. In their week 15 mock draft they laid out their mock picks for the first three rounds. For the Texas Longhorns there were a couple of selections. Luke Easterling gave his picks that involved one player on offense and one on defense. Both of them were picked in the 3rd round.

74. Carolina Panthers

Brandon Jones, Safety

The Panthers are a team that is in need of depth on the defensive side of the ball which makes Jones an attractive selection. Brandon Jones is a punishing hitter that can cause a few problems for offensive players as he can create some turnover opportunities with his jarring hits.

In the today’s NFL you need safeties to not only assist in stopping the run but also play coverage. What causes Jones to side down to day two of the draft is his lack of ball skills, while he isn’t the second coming of Earl Thomas, Jones shows he is plenty capable of making plays on the field, which is why the Panthers would do well to take Jones in the draft.

92. Oakland Raiders (From Seattle)

Collin Johnson, Wide Receiver

The way of offenses in the NFL are based on the passing game so not shock that the Raiders would look for a big-bodied receiver and what better place to get one than the Big 12 conference. They are known for high octane offenses that show out every Saturday.

Standing 6’6″, Johnson will tower over pretty much any defender that lines up against him. The thing that Collin does so well is box out defenders with his frame, which makes him a good target for Derek Carr and the offense in Oakland. This year the Raiders are 13th in red zone efficiency, adding a red zone target who can go up and attack the ball would only improve that number next season.
