College Football: No change in top 11 in latest Amway Coaches Poll

There wasn’t much movement at the top of today’s Amway Coaches Poll.

[jwplayer 35fm0liC-PROpJzTY]

For the first time this year, it looks like things are starting to crystallize at the top of the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY.

The entire top 11 stayed exactly the same after this weekend’s games. However, there was some movement beyond that. Wisconsin went up another two spots to No. 12 after their beatdown of Michigan. Northwestern continues their climb up the rankings, now coming in at No. 20 after knocking off Purdue on Saturday.

The only other Big Ten teams in the top 25 are, of course, Ohio State at No. 3 and Indiana, who stayed at No. 10 despite their beatdown of Michigan State…

20. Liberty 58, Western Carolina 14

Okay, so Malik Willis threw for 306 yards and three scores to go along with a team-high 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but the real thing that mattered was Virginia Tech’s performance against Miami. The Hokies lost by one, and NC State – next week’s opponent for the Flames – rocked Florida State. There’s a chance Liberty can be 3-0 against ACC teams and have a far, far, far better top-line win resumé than Cincinnati and BYU.

19. NC State 38, Florida State 22

There’s a shot NC State can close out a very quiet, very strong season with a great record if it can be the team that – with Syracuse and Georgia Tech to close – finally trips up Liberty next week. Florida State is just a shell of itself at this point – this game was over before the fourth quarter and a few late points – with QB Chubba Purdy stepping in and doing what he could. NC State wasn’t great, but it didn’t have to be.

18. Marshall 42, Middle Tennessee 14

If it’s possible to have a business-like 28-point blowout win on a day loaded with emotion – this marked the 50th year since the school’s devastating plane crash that killed most of the football team – this was it. Grant Wells threw five touchdown passes and didn’t make any big mistakes, the running game was fine, and the dominant Herd defense made it seven games without allowing more than 17 points.

17. Cincinnati 55, East Carolina 17

Yes, yes, very good Cincinnati. You’ve done the blow up the mediocre American Athletic Conference thing, but the world – particularly the College Football Playoff committee – is going to need more. It’s not the Bearcats’ fault, but there’s just nothing there – and don’t say SMU, Houston or Memphis, it demeans us both.

Yes, UCF lost to Memphis, but rocking the Knights in the Bounce House next week and taking care of Tulsa on the road – the last three games are on the road, including Temple – might just do it. The team has been a dominant machine with QB Desmond Ridder working his way into the honor of being the nation’s best unknown player.

16. Louisiana 38, South Alabama 10

Louisiana might be a top 25 team, but it’s still not getting any respect considering it holds the honor of handing Iowa State its worst loss of the season. South Alabama isn’t Alabama, but this was still a strong win against a decent defensive team that gave Tulane and Coastal Carolina a slew of problems. The Ragin’ Cajuns busted out an almost perfectly balanced day – 252 yards passing and 254 on the ground, but there were too many penalties and just enough mistakes to get yelled at this week.

20. Coastal Carolina 23, South Alabama 6

Don’t bail on Coastal Carolina just because it only beat South Alabama 23-9. The polls are still in love, and the New Year’s Six game and Sun Belt championship are both on the table. South Alabama is a decent enough defensive team to keep games from getting out of hand. Coastal Carolina got up early, the offense was balanced, the defense was strong throughout, and it was the sort of business-like easy win that good teams don’t sweat over.

19. Cincinnati 38, Houston 10

A whole lot of things can be true at once for Cincinnati. It can be that dominant, it can be there steady-good, and it can also be beating up on a whole slew of overrated and overloved teams. Houston is okay – it was missing its top receivers – but that doesn’t dismiss the 510 yards of total offense from the Bearcats, including 342 on the ground. The UC O line is a destructive force.

18. Oklahoma 62, Kansas 9

How next-level bad is Kansas? Oklahoma star QB Spencer Rattler was just okay, got hurt – he’s supposedly going to be fine with a banged up hip – and it was still a brutal blowout that got uglier and uglier with the backups in. No, this isn’t the Oklahoma team of previous seasons, and no, it’s not going to the College Football Playoff, but it’s working its way up into Big 12 Championship status with each week.

17. Texas A&M 48, South Carolina 3

Texas A&M might be fifth in the polls, and it is getting respect, but not enough. South Carolina really isn’t as bad as it looked – the Aggies were dominant. The D allowed just 150 yards of USC offense, Kellen Mond was methodically good, and the ground game – 264 yards and two scores – picked a great time to put together one of its best games of the season. It’s all there for the taking. Keep winning, go 9-1, expect Florida to lose another game, hope for a Notre Dame loss somewhere, and the CFP is right there.

16. Oregon 35, Stanford 14

Oregon’s win over Stanford is probably going to be dismissed as no big whoop, but that’s a better Cardinal team than it might seem. Tyler Shough was an effective 17-of-26 for 227 yards and a touchdown with a pick through the air for the Ducks, and he ran for 85 yards and a touchdown. Stanford showed a running game again after doing nothing last year, but that’s going to be the norm. Again, it was a good win for Oregon. This year, in the opener, take a 21-point victory and don’t ask any questions.

15. Indiana 38, Michigan 21

Don’t look at the opposing team records or get too into this any more than you have to. Indiana is 3-0 with wins over Penn State and Michigan. Again, Indiana – in football – is 3-0 with wins over Penn State and Michigan, beating the Wolverines for the first time since 1987.

The focus has been all on Michigan stinking it up, but really, this should be about IU improving in each of the first three games. Michael Penix’s 342 yards and three touchdowns, to go along with 97 yards and two scores from Stevie Scott, are legitimate. More than that, Indiana – again, in football – held the University of Michigan to 13 yards rushing.

14. Oklahoma State 30, Kansas State 18

Oklahoma State isn’t going to be the high-flying fun show we all thought it would be. However, the defense has been one of the biggest shockers of the 2020 college football season – it’s terrific, especially when it has to be (Texas game aside, to a point). The O didn’t really work against Kansas State, but on the road, and with the realistic Big 12 title dreams about to slip away, that was a gut-check win and finish – holding on to stop a two-point conversion in a take-the-W-get-on-the-bus-and-get-out game.

13. Marshall 51, UMass 10

Shhhhhhhhhh, but Marshall is right there in the mix for the Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six. Beating UMass by 41 is about as tough as ordering drive-through, but this team just keeps rolling right along. The running game is great, freshman QB Grant Wells is getting sharper and sharper, and now all the program needs is for the Cincinnatis, Libertys, Coastal Carolinas and BYUs of the world to start to stumble.

12. Iowa State 38, Baylor 31

So by this point we know what Iowa State is. Brock Purdy isn’t going to rise up and have a dominant statistical year, but he’s still going to be fine. The three touchdown passes – good. The 164 yards and three interceptions – bad. However, Breece Hall is having a Doak Walker Award type of season – 31 carries for 133 yards and two scores – and the defense managed to hold down a mediocre Baylor attack. The team’s four turnovers, though, almost gave the game away.

11. Miami 44, NC State 41

D’Eriq King isn’t going to win the Heisman, and he’s always going to be behind the Clemson starting quarterback in the attention department, but a case has to be made for him as the ACC MVP. That Hurricane team needed everything he gave it in the 44-41 win over NC State, completing 31-of-41 passes for 430 yards and five touchdowns, and with a team-high 105 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Big Ten teams see slight boost in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Ohio State remained No. 6 in the newly released coaches poll, but the three other ranked Big Ten teams all moved up a few spots.

[jwplayer A8I2iwtU]

The Big Ten won’t kickoff the 2020 season for a few more weeks but there was still some movement up the rankings for a handful of Big Ten teams in the latest coaches poll.

Ohio State remained No. 6 in the newly released Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA Today, but the three other ranked Big Ten squads all moved up a few spots based on this past weekend’s results. Penn State moved up two spots to No. 8, Wisconsin jumped up four spots to No. 14, and Michigan scooted up two spots to No. 19. Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska also received votes in this week’s poll.

To no surprise, Michigan State didn’t receive any votes in this week’s poll. The Spartans open the 2020 season on Oct. 24 against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Game time for kickoff in that one is still to be determined.

Clemson and Alabama top first Amway Coaches Poll without Big Ten teams

In the first Amway Coaches Poll without Big Ten teams, Clemson and Alabama sit atop the top 25 rankings.

[jwplayer wLZ8OZt0]

The new Amway Coaches Poll dropped on Sunday and, while Michigan State wasn’t going to be on it this week either way, this version is unique because it is the first Amway Coaches Poll to come out without any Big Ten teams in the ranking.

This means that Ohio State, a perennial top ten team, is nowhere to be found in this list. They were ranked at No. 2 in the preseason poll. Instead, ACC and SEC juggernaughts Clemson and Alabama sit at No. 1 and No. 2 on this version of the rankings.

Of course, things could change soon, as a report came out this morning that the Big Ten will be moving to reinstate the fall season in October after they collectively review a presentation their medical subcommittee gave on new rapid-response testing kits on Saturday.

You can find the full Top 25 on the next page.

The preseason Amway Coaches poll is out. Where does Notre Dame and their opponents for 2020 rank? Find out here!

What a day.

First we get Notre Dame’s 2020 football schedule finally released, we have to say goodbye to the Navy game for the first time in almost a century and now we have a sure-sign of the dog days of summer and college football approaching as the Amway Coaches poll powered by USA TODAY Sports has been released.

Who gets the No. 1 ranking?  Where does Notre Dame come in?  And where do Notre Dame’s opponents for 2020 check-in?

It’s all below:

Preseason Amway Coaches Poll:

  1.  Clemson
    2.  Ohio State
    3.  Alabama
    4.  Georgia
    5.  LSU
    6.  Oklahoma
    7.  Penn State
    8.  Florida
    9.  Oregon
    10.  Notre Dame
    11.  Auburn
    12.  Wisconsin
    13.  Texas A&M
    14.  Texas
    15.  Michigan
    16.  Oklahoma State
    17.  USC
    18.  Minnesota
    19.  North Carolina
    20.  Utah
    21.  UCF
    22.  Cincinnati
    23.  Iowa
    24.  Virginia Tech
    25.  Iowa State

Notre Dame sneaks into the top ten and is scheduled to face two teams appearing in the preseason top 25:  No.1 Clemson and No. 19 North Carolina.

If ranked No. 1 on November 7, Clemson will be the first top-ranked team in the nation to come to Notre Dame Stadium since USC in the famed 2005 “Bush Push” game.

Notre Dame will kickoff the 2020 season when they play host to unranked Duke on September 12.

Amway Preseason Coaches Poll Released: Where’s Georgia ?

Where does Georgia football rank in the preseason Amway USA TODAY Coaches Poll?

Coming off a 2019 that saw Georgia come so close to reaching the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs will look to make another run for glory in 2020.

Things will look awfully different this year due to massive scheduling modifications as a result of COVID-19.

However, there’s still football to be played, and the Dawgs will start the season ranked No. 4 in the  Amway Preseason Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports.

That ranking places Georgia second in the conference, behind Alabama which ranks No. 3 in the nation.

The full top-ten is as follows:

  1. Clemson
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. Georgia
  5. LSU
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Penn State
  8. Florida
  9. Oregon
  10. Notre Dame

Other SEC teams in the rankings include Auburn (11) and Texas A&M (13).

If Georgia – which should be favored in every game minus a visit to Alabama – takes care of business, then UGA should close out the season in its backyard of Atlanta.

The Dawgs return a lot of talent in 2020, mostly on a defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation last season.

On offense, Georgia lost a ton of production, including its starting quarterback, its top two running backs, four starting offensive linemen and a star wide receiver.

By looking at the losses lost from last season’s offense, it’s difficult to picture the Dawgs making another big run, but it’s important to remember that Kirby Smart has secured three consecutive top-ranked recruiting classes. In addition to the loads of talent waiting on the depth chart, Georgia was also able to land Heisman hopeful quarterback Jamie Newman in a transfer from Wake Forest.

If Georgia is going to have another memorable season, it will need these new offensive faces to be capable of moving the ball more than James Coley’s offense was able to in 2019.

The addition of Todd Monken, who I’d say was Georgia’s biggest acquisition this offseason, should make that possible.

With a ferocious defense and revamped offense, let’s see what these Dawgs can do.

Georgia football play of the day

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Monday, July 27 and today’s play of the day comes from Georgia at Auburn in 2013.

No. 25 Georgia entered Jordan-Hare as a three-point underdog to No. 7 Auburn and found itself down 27-7 at halftime. Then the comeback began. The Bulldogs went to work and brought themselves within six points of the Tigers. With 1:57 to go in the fourth quarter, the score was 37-31 Auburn, with Georgia facing a fourth-and-goal from the Tigers’ 5-yard line.

Watch what happened here:

DawgNation, unfortunately we know what happened to end this one, but what a clutch play from Murray and the Bulldog offense.

Georgia low, Florida even lower in Phil Steele’s preseason CFB top-25

Georgia football checked in lower than expected, but not as low as Florida, in Phil Steele’s preseason CFB top-25.

Phil Steele has released his annual preseason college football top-25, and this year he is not terribly high on Georgia.

Steele has the Dawgs sitting at No. 7 in America, by no means a bad a ranking. It’s just not necessarily where DawgNation would like to see their guys start the season — Most outlets have placed the Bulldogs anywhere from 4-6.

In these rankings, Steele has Georgia as the fourth best team in the SEC. Conference teams ranked ahead of the Bulldogs include Alabama, LSU and, surprisingly, Texas A&M.

You’ll have to scroll allll the way down to No. 13 to find the Florida Gators, a team that is receiving a ton of preseason hype by practically every analyst other than Steele.

Georgia returns 8 defenders from last year’s No. 1 ranked defense, added two elite quarterbacks, signed the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class and got an upgrade at offensive coordinator.

We’ll see.

Here’s Steele’s full rankings:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Clemson
  3. Alabama
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Texas A&M
  6. LSU
  7. Georgia
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Oregon
  10. Penn State
  11. USC
  12. Texas
  13. Florida
  14. Wisconsin
  15. Michigan
  16. North Carolina
  17. Miami
  18. Virginia Tech
  19. Auburn
  20. Tennessee
  21. Kentucky
  22. UCF
  23. Iowa
  24. Oklahoma State
  25. Memphis

College Football News makes game-by-game predictions for Georgia in 2020

College Football News recently released its game-by-game predictions for each SEC team for the 2020 season, including Georgia football.

Pete Fiutak of College Football News recently released his game-by-game predictions for each SEC team for the 2020 season.

Fiutak also predicted which teams would be playing in the SEC Championship Game on December 5th in Atlanta.

Fiutak has Georgia playing Alabama in the conference championship, with both teams going into the game at 11-1. In this scenario, the SEC Championship would basically be a College Football Playoff play-in game.

Fiutak sees Georgia’s only loss being on September 19th to Alabama in Tuscaloosa. If so, Georgia would be hungry for revenge when the two meet again in Atlanta.

As for the Crimson Tide, Fiutak has Alabama dropping just one game in the regular season – that being at LSU in early November.

In these predictions, Florida finishes the regular season 10-2.
