Central Michigan vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The passing game has been terrific.

The Chippewas might have suffered a crippling blow in a wild 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois last week, but Daniel Richardson ripped it up for close to 300 yards with three scores and a whole lot of big plays.

With the top passing attack in the MAC – Richardson has been bombs away over the last five games with 14 touchdowns and just two picks, both against Ohio – and Western Michigan has to prove it can be consistent enough to keep up.

The Bronco pass defense hasn’t been bad. It’s the offensive side that’s been the puzzling part of the picture, without enough points for all the yards. They average over 431 yards per game and are balanced, but they’re only pushed past 24 points once in the last five games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Can the Broncos control the tempo like they want to?

Again, it’s a strangely disappointing team. There’s no problem getting the passing game going, and the rushing yards are enough to help balance things out, but the real calling card is time of possession – the O is always on the field.

Western Michigan is second in the nation at controlling the clock, holding the ball for close to 37 minutes a game, but Central Michigan’s defense is outstanding on third downs and it’s great at coming up with tackles for loss.

The Western Michigan offensive front, though, is excellent in pass protection, and its own defensive front can get behind the line without a problem against a leaky Central Michigan line.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a big game in the MAC West race, made even bigger by Eastern Michigan stepping up and knocking down Toledo on Tuesday night. With so much traffic in the division, the loser of this is all but done.

Expect to be a bit of an offensive show, even though the Western Michigan defense is good enough to keep this in check for stretches – and that will be the difference.

The Broncos will have the ball for what seems like three hours, and the Central Michigan defense will have too many problems coming up with the difference-making play.

Western Michigan will do a better job of getting into the backfield than the Central Michigan D will.

Florida vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

The Florida run defense should get a bit of a break.

The Gators were blasted by an LSU running game that’s done absolutely nothing against anyone else.

Georgia was also able to pound away, and while there haven’t been that many issues overall for the Florida run D, the five rushing touchdowns allowed in the last two games haven’t been a plus.

South Carolina has a terrific group of running backs that just can’t get going.

There are plenty of positives in Shane Beamer’s first year, but getting the ground attack going has been an issue – it failed to get to 100 yards in five of the last seven games.

On the flip side, South Carolina’s defensive front has allowed 230 rushing yards or more in three of the last five games and is 0-4 when giving up at least 184 yards.

Florida averages 243 rushing yards a game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why South Carolina Will Win

Just how busted up and demoralized is Florida?

Everyone is saying all of the right things, but the Gators are 4-4 – just like South Carolina.

Florida has lost three of its last four games and four of the last six, and the last thing it can afford in a game like this is an unfocused effort considering their massive turnover issues.

There’s been at least one in every game, but the problem was manageable. Over the last three games, though, the two to Vanderbilt didn’t matter, the four against LSU were a killer, and the three against Georgia made a bad situation worse.

South Carolina also has a massive giveaway problem, but the D has been great this year – at least it was great over the first part of the season – at taking the ball away.

Being a +2 in this would make it interesting.

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina just doesn’t have the guys to get this done. The want-to is there, and the four wins so far have been great, but the best win so far was against … Troy? East Carolina?

The Gamecocks will come up with the takeaways and keep this from getting out of hand early, but the Gators will sharpen up, get the O going, and will go on two good second half scoring drives to take over the tempo of the game.

Tennessee vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols might have lost to Ole Miss and Alabama over the last two weeks, but the offense continues to be a whole lot of fun.

Hendon Hooker continues to be terrific. He’s averaging close to ten yards per pass with two or more scoring throws in six of the last seven games. He’s been steady, he’s not throwing picks, and he’s a seasoned enough vet to handle the pressure – he came up with a strong day in the loss to Alabama.

Not turning the ball over is a big key to the Tennessee attack. It might go fast, and it doesn’t care about the time of possession battle, but it only gave it up seven times so far.

Kentucky has a big turnover problem with four giveaways in last week’s loss to Mississippi State, and with multiple mistakes in five of the eight games.

The Tennessee offense doesn’t need any help, and Kentucky doesn’t force takeaways.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky doesn’t really slow things down or play stall ball, but it likes to play at its own pace and with a deliberate tempo – if it can.

The Tennessee offense might be great, but the defense is getting run over. It allowed close to 1,100 yards of total O to Ole Miss and Alabama over the last two games – holding up in key moments against the run was the biggest issue.

Ole Miss moved quickly – Matt Corral got beaten up, but he ran well – and Bama pounded away. Kentucky will do a little bit of both.

It’s no coincidence that the losses came when the Wildcat ground game stalled against both Georgia and Mississippi State. Tennessee can’t hold up like those two can.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky will run well.

Tennessee might provide the flash and the fun, but the Wildcats win when they can get past 100 yards on the ground, and they win relatively easily when they get to 200.

They’ll get to 200, but this won’t be anything easy.

Alabama vs LSU Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

There’s no pressure.

The major changes are coming for 2022, there are way too many key injuries, and no one will think the Tigers have any shot to even keep this close, much less pull off the upset without a special performance – and/or a meltdown from Alabama.

However, Florida proved it could run on the Tide. LSU – with two weeks off to rest up – has to pound away early and give it a shot – but this will be more about whether or not QB Max Johnson can get into a groove.

Tennessee might have lost to Alabama by 18, but Hendon Hooker and the passing game were strong. Mississippi State got blown out, but it went Mississippi State and threw for 300 yards.

After holding firm over the first four games, the Tide D has allowed well over 200 yards through the air in each of the last four games. If LSU can push the Bama secondary, and if that ground game can get moving, this gets interesting in a hurry.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Alabama Will Win

No, the LSU running game isn’t good enough.

The 321 yards against the Gators were an aberration – the Tigers haven’t hit the 150-yard mark on the ground against anyone else.

The bigger problem is on the other side, with the run defense getting rumbled over way too easily. The Tigers allowed close to 800 yards over the last three games, and Alabama is going to keep that going by pounding away right away.

The banged up LSU secondary will have a rough time, and Bryce Young will have plenty of shots at big things down the field, but expect a steady dose of Brian Robinson throughout the first half should set the tone, and then …

What’s Going To Happen

Everything will open up.

LSU will look and play like a fresh team for about 20 minutes. It’s going to bring the A effort, come up with a slew of quirky plays, and it’s going to be a fight for a while. But one Alabama scoring run later – helped by a few LSU offensive stalls – and this will all be over.

And then Bama will keep running the ball to close it out.

Mississippi State vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Will Rogers has been fantastic.

The sophomore quarterback is getting into a groove with the offense, playing well overall – hitting 75% of his passes – and it all kicked in with the win over Kentucky, completing 36-of-39 passes for 344 yards and a score with more things happening on the move and down the field.

If he’s connecting, Mississippi State has the exact type of formula to get by the Hogs. It’s going to move the ball on third downs, it’s outstanding at controlling the clock, and that all combines with the fifth-best run defense in America.

Now the Bulldogs have won three of their last four games – with the one loss coming to Alabama – and they’re still in the mix for a possible New Year’s Six bowl appearance if they can win out.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Arkansas Will Win

So how do the Hogs handle what the Mississippi State offense is doing?

The offense has to keep moving things, too, and it should after generating a strong balance with 873 rushing yards and 767 passing – with over 200 yards both rushing and passing in each game – over the last three outings.

The defense that’s among the best in the nation at coming up with third down stops has to keep Rogers from moving the chains, and the secondary that’s the best in the SEC at not allowing deep shots, and is second overall behind Georgia in pass D, has to be sharp.

What’s Going To Happen

The Arkansas offense will get things moving.

Mississippi State’s offense is going to throw for at least 350 yards – that’s what it does. However, the Bulldog D continues to be the underappreciated star, allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense in three of the last four games.

The Hogs, though, will keep the time of possession battle in range, but can it keep the turnovers to a minimum?

Arkansas turned it over twice in the first five games and five times in the last three. Mississippi State will generate a takeaway, but it won’t get the four it generated against Kentucky last week.

Auburn vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Bo Nix is on fire.

He might not be putting up crazy numbers, but the veteran Auburn quarterback is playing like a guy who went through the wars for two years and now knows what he’s doing.

The junior has pushed well past 200 yards passing in every SEC game, and he’s making more and more big plays, hitting over ten yards per throw over the last two weeks.

The defense was able to hold its own against the dangerous – but banged up – Ole Miss offense, the running attack is balancing things out, and the team is playing with more and more confidence.

The Tigers have won four out of their last five, with the one loss against Georgia. Besides Nix, how is this all working? The defensive front is getting into the backfield, the offensive line has been solid, and everything should be helped by a Texas A&M passing game that’s coming into the game struggling.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Texas A&M Will Win

A&M should be able to run the ball.

The great day from Zach Calzada and the passing game against Alabama appeared to be a mirage – it’s been a struggle through the air against Missouri and South Carolina. However, the ground attack has gone off with Isaiah Spiller hitting 100 yards in three of his last four games.

The Auburn defense might be effectively playing well – lots of bending without a ton of breaking – but Georgia, Arkansas, and Georgia State all hit 200 yards on the ground against the Tiger D.

The A&M defense is getting the job done, coming off one of its best performances of the season in the blowout win over South Carolina. And …

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies are rested.

They’ve had two weeks off after winning their last two games by a combined score of 79-28, and now it’s time to win a really, really big game again.

A&M still needs another Alabama loss – go Auburn – but it’ll grind its way out to a terrific win here to keep hopes of winning the SEC West alive.

Yes, Nix is playing well, and the offense is doing a great job, but the A&M defense will come up with a gem.

Ole Miss vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The offense is going to keep up the pace.

It might have been a mediocre few weeks for the Flames – with a close win over North Texas and a loss to ULM – but the offense still works.

This program gets up for games like this, and throw in the Hugh Freeze factor as he goes back to Oxford.

QB Malik Willis seems to have chilled with the interception problem he had in mid-October with three in back-to-back games, and now it’s time to shine against an Ole Miss defense that will give up well over 400 yards. The Liberty offense will be balanced, explosive, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offensive line will be in for a long day.

The stats are skewed Willis is a runner and a playmaker who’ll get caught in the backfield on a regular basis, but the front five will struggle against a good Ole Miss pass rush that should help generate a few turnovers.

No, the Rebel defense isn’t going to be a rock, but it will have its moments.

With QB Matt Corral banged up and the receiving corps having injury issues, Ole Miss will run and run some more against a Liberty defensive front that allowed well over 200 rushing yards to both North Texas and UMass in the last two weeks.

There’s going to be balance with the Ole Miss attack – as always.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Liberty and Freeze will be jacked for their moment in a big game on the big stage like this, but Ole Miss will be fired up, too. There won’t be the normal late-season non-conference lull.

Both quarterbacks will be great, there will be plenty of big plays, and expect over 400 rushing yards between the two teams. The Rebel offense will pull away in the second half, but the points will be there with Willis coming up with a huge performance.

Georgia vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

The Tigers have one of the best offenses Georgia has faced.

Yeah, the Bulldog defense has been all-timer special, but where’s the great O on the slate? Kentucky? Florida? Auburn? They’re all fine, but Georgia hasn’t had to deal with Tennessee, or Ole Miss, or Alabama, and the win over Clemson and its offense is hardly as strong as it originally appeared to be.

Missouri might not be consistent, but it has the star running back in Tyler Badie to deal with, and QB Connor Bazelak is accurate enough and good enough to give the Bulldog secondary a real test.

The Tigers are amazing on third downs, they’re automatic in the red zone, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Georgia Will Win

Missouri doesn’t do that whole defense thing.

Georgia’s defense can have its worst day of the year, and it won’t matter because the offensive side should be able to do whatever it wants.

The Tigers are dead last in the nation at stopping the run. EVERYONE is running for 200 yards on this bunch, including Vanderbilt, SE Missouri State, and Boston College. North Texas didn’t – it ran for 188 yards.

Georgia isn’t going to do anything funky here.

The D might not have the same intensity it showed against Florida, but it won’t matter. The O will run for 300 yards and control the game.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be shocked in Mizzou at least gets the attack going a little bit. There will be plenty of yards, but not enough points to overcome yet another awful day from the defense.

However, as bad as the Tiger D might be, it’ll come up with a few takeaways just to give everyone something to talk about. The Bulldog running game, though, will be relentless.

Eastern Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles are going to bomb away.

They’ve found something that works in QB Ben Bryant – the former Cincinnati Bearcat – and they’re going to stick with it.

He has hit close to 75% of his passes over the last few weeks and has been around the 70% mark on the year, keeping the mistakes to a minimum and doing a great job of pushing the ball deep.

The Toledo D might be among the best in the MAC, but the secondary has started to slip a little bit. After dominating for most of the year – outside of getting hit hard by Notre Dame – the Rockets have allowed over 200 passing yards in each of the last two games.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Toledo Will Win

The Toledo defense continues to be terrific.

Overall, the Rocket formula should work. It gets great D, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and there’s enough happening on the ground to control the tempo of the game.

There have been some some losses over the last few weeks – close defeats to Northern Illinois and Central Michigan – but run, keep trying to run, and hope that defense can come through.

Eastern Michigan has a strong, high-powered offense thanks to the passing attack, but forget about running the ball. The Eagle O was able to grind it out early this season, but everything stalled in a big, big way over the last month.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s this simple. Can the Eastern Michigan passing game do enough to screw up Toledo’s balance and defensive style.

The Rockets are coming off their best game of the season – a stunning blowout win over Western Michigan – but if they have to get into a shootout, there’s a problem.

But Eastern Michigan is having a hard times with teams that can run.

Toledo will get to 200 yards for the first time since early October, it’ll average over five yards per pop, and the defense won’t break enough after doing a lot of bending.

Miami University vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks are on a roll – and just in time.

They’re deep in the mix for the MAC East title – it’s relatively smooth sailing until what should be the game for the division at Kent State to close out the regular season – and they’ve figured out how to win good battles.

They’re on a run of three wins in the last four games, the passing game has been consistent, and they’re getting enough from the defensive and the offensive front to overcome a few problems.

They don’t turn the ball over, they hit the big pass plays, and they’re able to control games with their style, even though they don’t dominate the time of possession battle.

Ohio turns the ball over a tun, the defense has been a mess – especially against the run – and there won’t be enough of a pass rush to matter.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has played a whole lot better than its 1-7 record.

It might be one of the top under-the-radar disappointments of 2021, but they’re still battling hard. Ever since beating Akron, they’ve suffered gut punch after gut punch in three straight tough losses.

The offense, though, is doing a nice job. It’s not consistent in nay way, but Miami doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to come out and put 50 on the board. The Bobcats should be able to keep this close throughout, if not take over if the ground attack is working.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami keep Ohio from throwing well?

The RedHawks aren’t allowing anything on the ground over the last month, and Ohio is coming off a 308-yard passing day from Kurtis Rourke.

Miami keeps playing tight games and finds ways to win. Ohio keeps playing tight games and manages to lose. That’s about to flip in Athens in a quirky Tuesday night game.
