Auburn vs Texas A&M: Studs and Duds in the quarterfinal

A look at the studs and duds from Friday.

The Auburn Tigers fell just short Friday afternoon to the Aggies.

First Half Thoughts

Auburn looked like an entirely different team in the first half of Friday’s game with the Aggies. It seemed like nothing was clicking on either end for the Tigers. Jabari Smith led in both points and rebounds in the first half with nine points and seven rebounds.

Every other facet of Auburn’s game plan just seemed out of sync. Guards Wendell Green Jr. and K.D. Johnson could not establish any type of rhythm offensively. It seemed like every three that the Aggies threw up was falling in. Walker Kessler was getting outmanned by Henry Coleman III. It just looked like the Tigers had lost their mojo, so to speak. Things went from worse to ugly when they ended the first break down 37-21.

Second Half Thoughts

For the latter part of the second half, the Aggies controlled the clock and the tempo of the game. It was the efforts of Wendell Green, Jabari Smith, and Walker Kessler that gave the Tigers a fighting chance. After going down 20, they began to claw their way back into the game. At one point towards the end of the game, they even cut it to a four-point lead for the Aggies.

However, Texas A&M’s ability to grab defensive rebounds and sink free throws carried them to a thrilling victory over the one-seeded Tigers.

We break down the studs and duds from the game.

The No. 1 seeded Tigers are looking to pair their SEC regular-season Championship with a Tournament Championship while the No. 8 seeded Aggies are trying to prove they belong in the NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies (21-11) are fresh off an 83-80 overtime win over the Florida Gators on Thursday while Auburn has not played since Saturday when they beat South Carolina 82-71 to clinch the regular-season championship.

Auburn vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

So how did Arkansas do it?

How did the Hogs managed to pull off the overtime thriller over Auburn? The free throw line.

Arkansas forced 28 Auburn fouls and got to the line 32 times making 26 of their attempts. Auburn made just 8-of-17 in the 80-76 loss.

That, and the Tigers weren’t hitting enough from the field.

This is a streaking shooting team, struggling from the field against Missouri and failing to hit 40% in three of the last five games.

Texas A&M is great at getting to the free throw line, it rebounds well enough to generate a few second chance points, no one in the SEC forces more turnovers, and …

Why Auburn Will Win

Texas A&M just doesn’t seem to know how to win.

Oh sure, it pushed Arkansas to overtime … and lost.

It was close in two games against LSU, was okay against Kentucky, and shot well against Missouri, and lost all of those games, too.

What’s the problem? Defensive rebounding. Team after team after team ends up being too active on the offensive glass against this group.

A&M might force a bunch of mistakes, but it’s also getting hammered from three.

Auburn has too much scoring punch inside and out, the defense blocks too many shots, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Okay so the “Texas A&M doesn’t seem to know how to win” line is weak, but here’s where that’s a thing. The free throw line.

Yup, Auburn commits a ton of fouls, and yup, Texas A&M gets to the free throw line. It also misses WAY too many of them, and that’s a problem for a team that’s able to keep games low scoring and close.

Auburn at home will open things up a bit, and A&M won’t have the outside shooting to get past the energy of an early Tiger surge.

Five losers from Auburn vs Texas A&M

Who were the biggest culprits in Auburn’s loss to A&M?

On the surface, at the end of the game between Auburn and Texas A&M yesterday, I really didn’t want to write this article.

After giving myself some time to reflect, this loss to Texas A&M isn’t as bad as it may appear on the surface, for a couple of reasons.

For one, this season is not lost, nor do large-scale changes need to be made before the end of it. Looking into the future, however, this is an indication that the Tigers simply need to hit the recruiting trail extremely hard in order for Bryan Harsin & Co. to sustain long-term success. I believe eventually Auburn will get to the point where they are competing in and winning recruiting battles over the likes of Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU. They’re going to have to if they don’t want to be left in the dust after Texas and Oklahoma make the move to the SEC.

With that being said, for today, here are five losers from Auburn’s 20-3 loss to Texas A&M.

North Carolina 58, Wake Forest 55 Reaction

Nothing stops.

In the strange way the ACC season works this year, this technically wasn’t a conference game, so – as this is written before the afternoon games – Wake Forest is still two games up on NC State and two up on Clemson with three to play against NC State, at Clemson, at Boston College.

Don’t worry about the College Football Playoff talk for now. If Wake Forest wins those final three games – all solid now that Boston College has QB Phil Jurkovec back – win out, and put the pressure on the CFP committee as a 12-1 Power Five champion.

There are all sorts of strange tie-breaker things that could happen – I still think Clemson ends up winning yet another ACC Championship, somehow – but the Demon Deacons can realistically come close to locking this up by beating NC State next week.

However, for as much fun as the Demon Deacon offense is, this was the first true test for the team – Virginia was probably the best win so far – and the defense didn’t pass with a brutal fourth quarter and horrible game against the run.

Sam Hartman threw for close to 400 yards with five scores, he ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns, the receiving corps was amazing …

And the Demon Deacon run defense couldn’t do anything to help the cause.

Ty Chandler ran for 213 yards and four scores, Sam Howell threw for over 200 yards and a score and ran for over 100 with two touchdowns, and a big fourth quarter burst got the job done for a Tar Heel team that desperately needed this win.

With at Pitt, Wofford, and at NC State to go, a loss for a 4-4 team would’ve put all bowl hopes in jeopardy. Again, this game didn’t count in the ACC standings, but

If Pitt loses to Virginia or at Syracuse, and Virginia drops the game to Virginia Tech – or beats Pitt and the Panthers lose at Syracuse – North Carolin a is in the the ACC Championship by winning out.

It’s probably not going to happen – too many things have to come through – but Wake Forest vs. North Carolina doing this again in the ACC Championship would be a mighty fine end to the conference season.

First half takeaways from Auburn vs Texas A&M

It’s been a rough first half for both teams.

It’s been a tough, physical game so far between the Aggies and the Tigers.

Auburn has had some crucial opportunities wasted so far. A&M hasn’t been moving so well on offense either, and we have a 3-3 ballgame heading into the locker room.

If Auburn is going to win this game, which right now is looking difficult, they’ll need to clean some things up, and knowing the Tigers, the second half is where they have shined. Expect adjustments to be coming on both sides of the football.

Here are five takeaways from a sluggish first half between Auburn and Texas A&M in College Station.

Texas A&M will prove if Auburn is lucky or legitimate

Is Auburn lucky or legit?

We’ve seen this scenario play out for Auburn a couple of times before.

Auburn has either been given a loss early in the season or even given two losses before November. Under Malzahn, the Tigers had to rally and win out in order to get to the SEC Championship game. This year, Auburn is 6-2, and in my opinion, would not be in the position they are in had they lost to Georgia State earlier in the season.

So I’ve been asking myself this question – is Auburn lucky, or are they actually good?

Have they rebounded from the mistakes they made early on in the season? Have they actually adjusted? Or have they benefitted from playing LSU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss at opportune times?

This weekend against Texas A&M will prove a lot. Auburn hasn’t ever lost in College Station, and if they win again this weekend I’m curious to see what the excuse will be from the national media. To be quite honest, even saying Auburn is a “team of destiny” or something similar is somewhat of an excuse for opposing teams. It’s almost never “this Auburn team is actually good. They’re talented, and they win because of their coaching.” It’s usually complaints about the officiating, the breaks, and the luck. None of which I’m completely discounting. There are times where Auburn has caught breaks this season.

But I think this game against Texas A&M will shut down the destiny narrative. A&M is as talented or more talented than Auburn. Arkansas and Ole Miss aren’t. A win for the Tigers would prove that Auburn is just simply a good football team. If Auburn loses, then it kills the talent narrative and the Tigers are most likely staring an 8-4/9-3 season in the face with a couple of lucky breaks here and there. At least, according to the national media.

Kickoff between the No. 13 Tigers and the No. 14 Aggies begins at 2:30 p.m. central time this Saturday on CBS.

Auburn football enters Texas A&M game as an underdog

Can Auburn defy the odds again?

Once again, the Tigers are being doubted by oddsmakers.

How ignorant.

I kid, but Auburn has played well against the spread this year (The Tigers are 5-3 overall ATS this season). They’ll have their work cut out for them against the Aggies this weekend.

Line: Texas A&M (-4.5)

Over/Under: 49

Money Line: Auburn (+170) | Texas A&M (-200)

Auburn currently controls its own destiny. If they win out, they’re going to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game. It all starts with Texas A&M. Auburn has never lost in College Station, but my concern with this game doesn’t lie there.

Sure, Auburn has played well at A&M in the past, and the typical “Auburn narrative” has been written once again this season. A team of destiny, Auburn in November, Iron Bowl stakes, and so on. My concern lies in this being a new group experiencing the repetitive narrative. Can Bryan Harsin and this staff do what the one before them did, which is defying the odds?

Auburn football: Grading the Texas A&M Aggies

Can the Tigers overcome a stout A&M defense?

The Aggies, much like Auburn, have had an up and down season.

Both teams come into the game at 6-2, but the path for A&M differs from that of Auburn’s. The Aggies opened up the season with Haynes King at quarterback. After a season-ending injury at Colorado, King was replaced by Zach Calzada. The offense sputtered for three weeks. Losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State in back-to-back weeks presumably derailed what was a promising season.

A&M then turned around and beat Alabama 41-38. Since that point, the Aggies have been rolling, averaging 40 points per game.

Here are the grades for the Aggies at every position group.
