Kansas State vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

And there’s the Kansas we’re all used to.

After looking brilliant at times against Oklahoma in the stunning 35-23 loss to a team that’s probably going to end up in the College Football Playoff, it all came crashing back to reality in a 55-3 loss to Oklahoma State.

The defense was bad, the offense worse, and the team that’s the worst in the nation in a few areas – most specifically, third down defense – showed just how far things still have to go.

Kansas State has been okay over the last two weeks – it basically got two coaches fired.

Matt Wells was sacked by Texas Tech after losing a tight battle to the Wildcats, and the Gary Patterson ended at TCU after lat week’s loss.

What is Kansas State doing better now after a three-game losing streak? It’s simple … it played mediocre teams and the D stepped up.

5-0 when holding teams to 340 yards or fewer, 0-3 when it doesn’t, it now gets a Kansas State that only got to 340 three times, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s not like the Kansas State offense is going to go off.

The Wildcats are playing better defensively, but the running game is struggling and the overall explosion isn’t there either for an attack that’s riding a hard time to consistently keep everything rolling.

The Oklahoma game might have been an aberration, but it should be able to come up with enough third down conversions to keep things moving a little bit – Kansas State struggles to get off the field.

Yes, the Jayhawk D can’t come up with enough meaningful stops, again, this isn’t a K-State offense with a ton of firepower. It doesn’t generate a whole lot of first downs and usually plays low scoring, close battles.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

No, Kansas State isn’t going to make this three in a row – Kansas head coach Lance Leipold won’t be fired after this.

Kansas will be far, far better than it was against Oklahoma State – the Cowboy D is a killer – but it’ll sputter just enough in the second half to allow Kansas State to go on a run.

Once again, the Jayhawk defense won’t be able to last.

Georgia State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

On a three-game winning streak, the Panthers have kicked in the running game with close to 900 yards on the ground over the stretch while also being able to balance it all out with an effective passing game to keep everything moving.

There are problems – the yards aren’t always translating into points – but the defense has been able to hold up in key moments and allowing 19 points per game overall.

Can it handle the running game? Does it have the front line to hold up against the Louisiana attack? It was able to keep the Georgia Southern quirky ground game to just over 200 yards and held Army to 258 – teams aren’t gouging the Panthers.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Louisiana Will Win

Again, for all of the good things Georgia State is doing, it’s having a hard time putting the biscuit in the basket.

The passing game isn’t efficient enough, the offense doesn’t hold on to the ball for long – the O is on the field for under 28 minutes per game, and …

The pass defense. That’s the problem. The Panthers don’t get destroyed, but they’re good for giving up over 250 yards through the air.

Louisiana is managing to do what it must to get things moving. It would like to run, but Levi Lewis and the passing game can balance it all out without a problem … and it will.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana, Northwestern, San Jose State, Ball State, Liberty, Iowa State – to a certain extent – it’s been hard for all of the darlings of 2020 to keep the mojo going in 2021.

Louisiana has made it happen, and all with a bit of an overhaul in a few key spots.

This isn’t always the most dynamic of teams like past versions were, but it keeps getting the job done.

Georgia State has the offense to win this, but it doesn’t have the D. It’ll keep up and make it a fun game, but the Ragin’ Cajuns will pull off another weeknight victory as they take the Sun Belt West title.

It’ll be a fight, though, into the fourth.

Michigan vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

Indiana has to keep up the offensive balance from last week.

It’s been a long and disappointing season that has fallen off a cliff with four straight losses and an 0-5 run in the Big Ten, but the Hoosiers were able to move the ball in the 38-35 loss to Maryland.

The ground game finally showed some life, freshman Donaven McCulley threw for 242 yards and two scores, and the team started to look the like everyone was hoping for two months ago.

If there was ever a time to catch Michigan on a lull, this would be it.

It’s coming off of the gut-punch of a loss to Michigan State, it has a road trip to Penn State follow, and again, it’s all about whether or not Indiana can be versatile with an offense that needs to keep up the pace with what’s coming.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Michigan Will Win

Obviously it’s not as simple as Indiana just being balanced on offense or getting the running game going just because it wants to, but it really did come up with one of its sharpest and strongest offensive games of the season last week …

And lost.

Michigan’s lines should dominate this.

You don’t think this D is embarrassed by letting Kenneth Walker get into the Heisman race?

Michigan’s defense is strong at getting off the field, the offensive line isn’t allowing much of anything to happen in the backfield, and it all should work against an IU team that doesn’t generate enough pressure on defense and can’t come up with enough of a steady push on the other.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan is going to try to beat Michigan State on the first few drives.

Can Indiana withstand the early burst, and can it get to midway through the second quarter with a few points on the board and still in range of making this interesting?

Nah.

Michigan will get its running game groove back, the O will get up quickly, and this should be done and over by the early fourth quarter.

Iowa vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

Finally, an offense that’s more to Iowa’s liking.

The Hawkeyes might be having issues, but Northwestern’s defense has gone to another level of mediocre.

It had a moment against Rutgers, and it was good early on against the bad teams – and put up a bunch of meaningless yards in the second half against Northwestern – but it fell off a cliff over the last month.

It all bottomed out last week with just 98 passing yards in a 41-14 loss to Minnesota. Now it gets an Iowa team that’s desperate to do something positive.

It’s going to start with something simple – running the ball.

The Iowa offensive line has been lousy, but it’s about to eat. Northwestern has allowed close to 300 rushing yards in three of the last four games.

Finally, it’s time for the Hawkeyes to line up and blast away and be … Iowa.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Northwestern Will Win

Iowa really, really, really can’t run.

It’s not for a lack of trying, and it’s not like it doesn’t have talented backs to work with, but this thing just isn’t working.

The Hawkeyes are averaging fewer than three yards per carry and haven’t hit the 160-yard mark in any game but easy win over a miserable Kent State defense.

This is a good Iowa team with a great defense, but it needs to be more than that.

Northwestern can’t keep up any sort of a pace with its mediocre offense, but Iowa dead last in the Big Ten in total offense, dead last in yards per play, and it hasn’t shown much hope to bust out of the funk.

So why was Iowa ever thought to be good enough to be the No. 2 team in the country?

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Takeaways, and oh dear heavens does the Iowa defense need to start coming up with them again.

Iowa was +15 in turnover margin and was 6-0 as the second-best team in the country.

Four turnovers against Purdue and three more against Wisconsin later, and the Hawkeyes lost their last two games by a combined score of 51-14.

Get a few early scores, stuff the run, make Northwestern have to push a little more than it has over the last few blowout losses, and let the D do the work.

This is when Iowa will look like it’s supposed to, even if none of this is pretty.

Penn State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

Maryland doesn’t run well. It hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of the last four games, and that means the offense has to bomb away to have any shot. That goes right into the teeth of the Penn State defense.

The Nittany Lion pass D should be terrific. The secondary has a ton of talent, the pass rush should be good enough, and it all should work with a whole bunch of plays in the backfield.

Maryland is 5-0 when it throws for over 300 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t get there. Penn State has only given up over 200 yards three times and over 300 yards once. CJ Stroud and Ohio State got to 305 passing yards last week, and that was a strain.

If Taulia Tagovailoa has to throw and throw some more to get that many yards, the picks will eventually follow.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Maryland Will Win

The Penn State running game has been a struggle.

It hasn’t hit 100 yards in five of the eight games, it only got to 200 yards against Villanova and Ball State, and relying on a consistent passing game with this attack is a concern.

The Maryland defense hasn’t been anything special, but it has a good enough pass rush to be a bother and it should be just effective enough to help control the clock.

The Terp offense doesn’t grind, but it should be able to own the time of possession battle against the quick-paced Penn State attack.

Maryland wouldn’t mind making this a bit of an up-and-down shootout, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

On a three-game losing streak, Penn State should finally be able to settle in a bit and play a relatively comfortable game.

The D shouldn’t have anything to worry about against the Maryland ground attack, and the offensive side should be able to hit the midrange plays just enough to keep everything moving.

Maryland is good against the mediocre and awful against the good teams. Penn State is a good team.

Wisconsin vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Rutgers has no downfield passing game.

The offense isn’t great, but it isn’t completely miserable. For what the team does – rely on defense, force mistakes, run the clock – getting to 350 yards isn’t all that bad … against most defenses.

You beat the Wisconsin D by hanging around, and then hitting the open deep shots that are always available 2-to-4 times a game against this bunch. Rutgers is averaging under ten yards per completion – among the fewest in the country – and hasn’t hit 160 yards passing in either of the last two games.

The Badger defense has been a brick wall – allowing fewer than 270 yards of total offense to everyone but Penn State and Michigan – and dominating against the run.

Georgia has the best defense in college football, but Wisconsin leads the nation against the run.

The Rutgers offense isn’t going to move, so …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers has to hang around … hang around … hang around …

And hope the takeaways will be there to pull this off.

Ohio State and Michigan State were able to run well against the Scarlet Knights, but that’s been about it – they should be able to hold up well early. If Wisconsin gets to over 24 points, forget it. If it’s held to around 17 and has to press, the mistakes will come.

The Badger offense has been able to finally stop giving the ball away in bunches – it was ultra-careful with the ball against an Iowa team that lives on taking it away – but it has turned it over two or more times five times in eight games.

Rutgers has the ability to take the ball away in bunches …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Sort of.

Rutgers has ten takeaways on the season, but they all came in three games. The offense isn’t going to make big mistakes, but it’s also not going to convert on the big chances it will have to take.

Wisconsin should be able to deliver the knockout punch right away with two good scoring drives, but the struggles in the red zone are for real.

The Badger O only scores touchdowns 50% of the time when getting inside the 20. When it gets two or more, it wins – 5-0 – when it gets fewer, it’s 0-3.

Rutgers has a terrific red zone defense, but …

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Besides all of the production from Kenneth Walker, what else is Michigan State doing that’s so right as the No. 3 team in the College Football Playoff rankings?

It’s sort of an odd-great team.

It runs well – it has one of the Heisman front-runners – but it’s not all that great on third downs, the defense isn’t all that great at stopping teams from moving the chains, the team commits a bazillion penalties, and it’s dead last in the Big Ten in total defense.

And it’s still unbeaten and coming off a great win over Michigan.

The team has a way of coming through when it needs to. It’s almost like it has to settle in and then outlast the opponent.

That’s what happens when you have a team that plays with a whole lot of confidence. It comes up with the timely sack, and the takeaway, and the punt return, and whatever is needed in close game after close game.

And it has the nation’s leading rusher.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Purdue Will Win

Yeah, Michigan State knows how to win, and it’s playing with swagger, and it’s tough, and it’s clutch, and blah, blah, blah, blah …

This defense gives up a TON of yards.

It doesn’t allow a lot of points, though – again, it’s an odd team – but even so, this might be the exact type of fit for Purdue.

This isn’t a Drew Brees/Billy Dicken/Kyle Orton Basketball on Grass type of team. It plays games in the 20s – the Boilermakers have yet to play a game this year with a point total over 51.

Unlike Michigan State, Purdue doesn’t get hit with penalties – it gets flagged the fewest times in the Big Ten. The defense only gives up 314 yards per game and is great on third downs, and overall, it’s more about ball control than anything else.

Michigan State has the offensive pop and firepower, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue doesn’t give up much on the ground.

Illinois was able to rumble a bit, but Wisconsin was the only team to do much of anything – no one other than the Badgers ran for 200 yards on this bunch.

Walker won’t exactly get bottled up, but he’s going to be in for a long day.

The Boilermaker pass defense that came up with four picks against Iowa and four more against Nebraska in the last three weeks will come up with a few against Payton Thorne, who threw four interceptions in the last two games, and …

Michigan State will once again find a way.

It’s not going to be dominant, but it’ll be another win with Walker breaking through with one big late scoring run.

Purdue’s offense will put up yards, but not enough points, because that’s how the Michigan State defense rolls.

Ohio State vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

What’s Nebraska’s problem? It continues to be the main issue in the Scott Frost era.

Turnovers aren’t always an issue, but the four against Purdue were a killer in a five-point loss. The two against both Michigan and Michigan State were huge – losing both games by three.

There aren’t enough takeaways, the pass rush isn’t strong enough, the special teams overall are just okay – it just hasn’t been a tight enough team overall in close games.

On the flip side, Ohio State is hardly perfect, but it makes up for it by massive amounts of yards and points.

The passing game might take a while to warm up, but the nation’s No. 2 offense is good for 300 yards through the air every time out. Penn State did a decent job of holding up against the run, and it still gave up 466 yards of total offense last week.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Nebraska Will Win

It’s possible to move the ball on Ohio State.

It does a whole lot of bending but not a ton or breaking, allowing 24 points or fewer in each of the last six game, but it also helped to go against Rutgers, Indiana, Maryland, and Akron.

QB Sean Clifford might have been healthy and able to go last week, but that Penn State offense did a whole lot of nothing against Iowa and Illinois before cranking up over 360 passing yards and close to 400 yards of total O on the Buckeyes.

The Huskers will move the chains in this.

In a whole lot of ways, the pressure is off Nebraska. It’s supposed to get blasted in this to lock in yet another losing season – it can let it rip.

Adrian Martinez is coming off a rough day throwing the ball, but Purdue’s defense is playing better than Ohio State’s. At home, he has to be make this game his.

And on the other side …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska’s defense has been okay. It hasn’t been amazing, but it’s been decent enough to stay in every game.

The biggest loss this year for the Huskers? The opener to Illinois by eight.

They hung around with Oklahoma, pushed Michigan to the brink, gave Michigan State a rough run, and it’s about to rise up and come up with something special against Ohio State …

For 45ish minutes.

Martinez will be strong, the team will be good, and everything will be right there for the taking, and then CJ Stroud will connect on two big passes in the fourth quarter to finally give the Buckeyes a little breathing room.

Illinois vs Minnesota Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The Illini defense is playing well.

Wisconsin was able to rumble at will, and Rutgers ran for 230 yards, but overall, Illinois is able to keep scores low and games close with its style. It hasn’t allowed more than 24 points since the loss to Virginia six games ago and in Big Ten play.

Minnesota’s running back situation is sadly ridiculous with injuries. The offensive line is great, the ground game is working no matter what, but the team is scrambling for any backs who can handle the job now.

This isn’t a Minnesota team that’s going to throw 50 on the board. Keep it close, grind it out, how to get the right turnovers at the right times – Illinois can do that.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Minnesota Will Win

If the Minnesota running game works, forget it.

Yeah, the Gopher running back depth chart has ben decimated, but the blocking is there, the style doesn’t change, and freshman Mar’Keise Irving has been the Next Back Up with 225 yards and three touchdowns over the last two weeks.

Even with the injury issues, the Gophers are getting better and better on the ground, hammering Maryland for 326 yards and Northwestern for 308.

Illinois is 0-3 when giving up over 200 rushing yards, but it’s going to come down to …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. Illinois has to have them.

It hasn’t come away with one in either of the past two weeks – which was crazy that it beat Penn State despite being -3 in turnover margin – but it forced two in five straight games before that.

Minnesota lost to Bowling Green because of three giveaways – and because it  just never got off the bus – but it doesn’t have a big turnover issue.

This will get mucky, and there won’t be anything aesthetically pleasing about this, but the Gophers will run through the Illinois D just enough to control the game and hold on late.

Northern Illinois vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

So how can Northern Illinois stop the high-powered Kent State attack that goes 100 miles per hour?

Slowwwwwwwwww it down.

Duh, that’s what everyone tries to do, but Northern Illinois can actually do it.

Western Michigan isn’t necessarily an offensive juggernaut. It comes up with a whole lot of yards but not a lot of points – it hung 64 on Kent State. And why?

It had the ball for 37:41 and rolled up 648 yards of total offense. It was able to do what it does better, only slower.

Northern Illinois can keep the ball for close to 34 minutes per game, and it does it with a pounding ground game behind an offensive line that’s the best in the MAC.

The Huskies will get off the bus with 250 rushing yards against the Kent State D. However …

Why Kent State Will Win

Kent State is used to it.

It’s more than happy to give the offense some rest so it can go on a sprint.

QB Dustin Crum has been running this offense for forever and doesn’t screw up – he threw two picks in the opener against Texas A&M and hasn’t given one away since.

The defense might not be anything special, but it’s amazing at generating takeaways – 19 on the year with two or more in six of the eight games – and again, Crum and company don’t turn it over.

Kent Stat leads the nation in turnover margin, it’ll be +2 against the Huskies, and it should be able to answer long scoring drives with fast, efficient ones. It all comes down to …

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Kent State defense ever get off the field if it’s not forcing takeaways?

Northern Illinois does a whole lot of grinding, but it doesn’t convert a whole lot of third down tries. That won’t be too much of an issue against a defense that allowed 12 rushing touchdowns in the last three games and three, 300-yard rushing days.

Northern Illinois won’t win the MAC West with this, but it’ll come very, very close. Kent State will still be okay with the tough loss – it’ll almost certainly meet the Huskies again in a few weeks for the MAC title.
