Kansas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats got them a few weeks ago.

It was a blast of an overtime win over the Jayhawks by doing just enough on the boards and coming up with just a bit more from the field in a dead even battle.

They might be scuffling a wee bit losing their last two games on the road, but they’re still moving the ball around as well as anyone in the country, the defense is still a killer – especially at stopping the three – and they already proved they can hang with the Jayhawks on the glass.

Kansas lost three in a row before pushing past Kentucky. It’s not its normal dominant-shooting self on the inside, it’s not getting to the line enough, and the lack of pop from the bench is starting to become a wee bit of a problem.

However …

Why Kansas Will Win

Again with the road issues. Kansas State has lost three of its last five games away from Manhattan – it’s unbeaten at home.

Yeah, it’s great at coming up with the extra pass, but it also turns it over way too much, and that’s a problem against the Jayhawks.

Any mistake against this bunch turns into instant points. That starts by being able to hold up on the defensive glass.

Against, Kansas State won the first rebounding battle – it was +6 – but that’s relatively rare. TCU was able to crush the Jayhawks on the boards in the their lone loss in Allen Fieldhouse, and it didn’t help that the D went bye-bye in the blowout.

As long as they can keep things moving – they passed better than Kansas State in the first meeting – all should be fine as long as they own the interior.

What’s Going To Happen

This game always matters, but this will have just a little extra juice for KU after losing the first time around.

Kansas won’t be as awful from three, but it won’t get to the line as much – it made a season-high 24 free throws in Manhattan.

It’ll do a great job of preventing the second chances that became a killer in the loss, and it should be stronger on the inside. Kansas State will stall a bit in the second half, there will be a mini-run for the home side, and it’ll be yet another very, very good game.

Kansas State vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

We did this back in late January and Kansas State gave the Jayhawks all they could handle. It might have been a 78-75 Kansas win, but the Wildcats did a great job from the field and locked down from three.

No one in the Big 12 takes more threes than Kansas State, only a few teams are better in the nation at guarding the outside, and there aren’t enough mistakes to give away easy points.

The team can bomb its way back into games and keep up with just about anyone, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Kansas Will Win

The Kansas State interior presence isn’t there.

There aren’t any blocks and rebounding against the Jayhawks will be a massive problem. Kansas scores in bunches, it’s fantastic at coming up with easy points on the inside, and be shocked if there isn’t a massive difference in rebounding.

The offense is pumping all while the defense is playing as well as it has all season. Again, it’ll roll on the boards and it should lock down against the three – Kansas State lost even though it made ten in the first meeting. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State isn’t hitting ten threes this time.

Kansas is too good from they field, Kansas State is too limited when it’s not on fire from the outside, and to hammer this home, the rebounding.

There will be too many Wildcat one-and-dones as the game starts to slip away in the second half.

Kansas State vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

And there’s the Kansas we’re all used to.

After looking brilliant at times against Oklahoma in the stunning 35-23 loss to a team that’s probably going to end up in the College Football Playoff, it all came crashing back to reality in a 55-3 loss to Oklahoma State.

The defense was bad, the offense worse, and the team that’s the worst in the nation in a few areas – most specifically, third down defense – showed just how far things still have to go.

Kansas State has been okay over the last two weeks – it basically got two coaches fired.

Matt Wells was sacked by Texas Tech after losing a tight battle to the Wildcats, and the Gary Patterson ended at TCU after lat week’s loss.

What is Kansas State doing better now after a three-game losing streak? It’s simple … it played mediocre teams and the D stepped up.

5-0 when holding teams to 340 yards or fewer, 0-3 when it doesn’t, it now gets a Kansas State that only got to 340 three times, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s not like the Kansas State offense is going to go off.

The Wildcats are playing better defensively, but the running game is struggling and the overall explosion isn’t there either for an attack that’s riding a hard time to consistently keep everything rolling.

The Oklahoma game might have been an aberration, but it should be able to come up with enough third down conversions to keep things moving a little bit – Kansas State struggles to get off the field.

Yes, the Jayhawk D can’t come up with enough meaningful stops, again, this isn’t a K-State offense with a ton of firepower. It doesn’t generate a whole lot of first downs and usually plays low scoring, close battles.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

No, Kansas State isn’t going to make this three in a row – Kansas head coach Lance Leipold won’t be fired after this.

Kansas will be far, far better than it was against Oklahoma State – the Cowboy D is a killer – but it’ll sputter just enough in the second half to allow Kansas State to go on a run.

Once again, the Jayhawk defense won’t be able to last.
