LOOK: UNC basketball point guards pose for picture

A trio of UNC Basketball point guards pose for a photo as Carolina Basketball Camps get underway.

The college basketball season is months away, but players are already on campus to begin summer classes. And that means the annual Carolina Basketball Camps & Clinics are here as well.

With camps opening up, former and current players are all participating and that includes the popular pickup games that aren’t available to the public. As you know, the Carolina Family runs deep so when we see players get together and pose for photos, it’s always an awesome scene.

On Tuesday, a photo of two current UNC point guards and a former point guard posed for a photo. Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble and Cole Anthony got together as you can see below via Michelle Cadeau:

After playing one season in Chapel Hill, Anthony has spent his entire NBA career with the Orlando Magic. He’s a piece of a rebuild in Orlando as the Magic have a bright future ahead.

Trimble is entering his second season with the team after being the backup point guard to R.J. Davis a year ago.c and has joined the Tar Heels immediately. Between Cadeau and Trimble as well as Davis returning, UNC’s backcourt is likely going to be a strength for the team.

Former UNC guard Cole Anthony explodes for season-high vs Bucks

Former UNC basketball guard Cole Anthony exploded for a season-high against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

Former UNC basketball guard [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag] had his best game of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday night despite a loss.

Anthony went for a season-high 28 points on 10-of-16 from the field and 3-of-7 from three. He added seven rebounds, four assists and just one turnover in 33 minutes off of the bench.

It was his sixth 20-point game of the season.

“I got some pretty easy looks early on. Credit to my team, they got me some early looks and I think I did a good job spacing the floor,” Anthony said postgame. “It was nice to see some shots go in.”

Anthony spent the majority of his first two years with the Orlando Magic as a starter. This season, he has started just three games.

Despite the move to a bench role, he’s in the midst of having his most efficient season in his short career. So far he’s averaging 12.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He’s shooting 44.3 percent from the field, up from 39.3 in his first two years. He’s also shooting 49.8 percent on 2s, up from 42.8 percent in his first two seasons. Anthony has scored in double-figures in 23 of the 43 games he’s played.

Magic guard Cole Anthony touts Paolo Banchero as Rookie of the Year

Banchero leads all rookies in scoring and 20-point games, and is one of two first-year players with multiple 30-point games.

Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero has earned plenty of respect from players around the NBA, and many believe he is the front-runner for the Rookie of the Year award.

That, of course, includes his teammates.

Banchero continued his strong season on Tuesday by being named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December. He led all first-year players in scoring and minutes during the month, averaging 19.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.1 steals.

The No. 1 pick was grateful to win the award, but he thought he could have played even better. Winning the award, his first of the season, was not a surprise to teammate Cole Anthony, though.

“I see how he plays every day. He deserves that joint,” Anthony said. “I fully expect him to win Rookie of the Year, too. Obviously, I’m happy for him but that kid is awesome. He deserves it but as I said, I’m not surprised.”

Said Jonathan Issac:

He deserves (Rookie of the Month) just with what he has been able to do early on. I saw all of those things about comparisons with LeBron (James) and those guys who came into the league and were able to have their way and he has done just that. He is just going to continue to keep growing and growing but what he has already established in himself in this league is going to be great.

Banchero is averaging a team-high 21 points, 6.7 rebounds and four assists on 43.6% shooting from the field. He leads the rookie class in overall scoring and 20-point games (22), and is one of two first-year players with multiple 30-point games.

The 20-year-old is the overwhelming favorite to win Rookie of the Year at minus-700, according to BetMGM. Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin is second at plus-500 and Jaden Ivey of Detroit is third at plus-2200.

Banchero has largely played with poise and a maturity that has extended well beyond his years. He has drawn praise throughout the season from LeBron James, Jayson TatumDraymond Green and others, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

“Our group is so excited for him,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “I’m so excited for him. You talk about a kid that, even though he was saying I didn’t play a great month, it still recognizes what he has helped this team do.”

Cole Anthony suffers oblique muscle injury

Former UNC basketball point guard Cole Anthony suffered an oblique injury for the Orlando Magic.

Going into this season, former UNC basketball point guard [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag] figured to play a big role in Orlando’s offense. As the Magic have a young core, Anthony is considered a key player, going into his third year in the NBA.

But after a week of action, Anthony could be missing some time.

On Wednesday night, Anthony suffered an oblique muscle injury and his timetable for a return will be determined by evaluations. It’s a small setback for Anthony who missed the first game of the year with an illness.

So far this year, Anthony is averaging 15.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He’s appeared in four games so far this season.

Anthony had a season-high 25 points in his debut game last Friday for the Magic.  Orlando is 0-5 to start the year.

Cole Anthony has impressive season debut for Magic

Former UNC point guard Cole Anthony had an impressive 2022-23 season debut with the Orlando Magic, scoring 25 points.

The Orlando Magic are one of the more intriguing young teams in the NBA this season. Not only do the Magic have No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero but they also have a young nucleus that includes [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag], Jalen Suggs, and Wendell Carter among others.

For Anthony, this is his third season in the NBA and he’s a key cog to the Magic offense. On Friday night, he showed that as he made his season debut.

Anthony scored 25 points in Friday’s loss to Atlanta, putting together an impressive showing in his first game for the 2022-23 campaign after missing Wednesday’s game with an illness.

The Magic are 0-2 on the year but so far, the young players are showing up and making an impact. This is going to take some time for them to gel but if they can get some big games from Banchero, Anthony, and Suggs, they should start to develop more and win games.

Cole Anthony looking to change the narrative for the Orlando Magic

Former Tar Heel Cole Anthony shined at media day as he spoke about the Orlando Magic and his growth this off-season.

The National Basketball Association is near, which means their annual media day is here, and getting in on some of that fun is former Tar Heel [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag].

Anthony will enter his third season with the Orlando Magic, becoming a vital part of their young core. Antony was a one-and-done at UNC, and despite his injury-riddled season, he was still drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Anthony has made significant strides in his first to the second year with Orlando, boosting his points per game from 12.9 to 16.3. He also increased his assist average from 4.1 to 5.7 and rebounded from 4.7 to 5.4.

The former Tar Heel has been a stat sheet stuffer in the NBA with games that flirted with triple-doubles. His best game came last season when Anthony led Orlando past the New York Knicks 110-104, finishing with 29 points, 16 rebounds, and eight assists.

As he embarks on year three, he talks about the Magic gaining some respect on media day.

“I think most teams look at us as the laughing stock of the league,” Anthony said. “I think we gonna change the narrative.”

Anthony also spoke about his new diet, hiring a chef this off-season to avoid the nagging injuries with the goal of playing all 82 games this season.

2024 five-star guard planning visit to UNC

One 2024 five-star point guard is planning to visit the UNC basketball program this fall.

The UNC basketball program is still trying to finalize the last few pieces to its 2023 class, but in the meantime, are starting to get extremely active in the class of 2024.

One 2024 prospect that holds an offer from the Tar Heels is five-star point guard [autotag]Boogie Fland[/autotag]. Fland is ranked as the No. 10 overall player in the class in the Rivals rankings. He is also the No. 2 overall point guard — one spot behind UNC target Elliot Cadeau.

While Fland is early in his recruitment, that Tar Heels are sticking out enough to receive a visit, he tells Rivals.

“I’m planning to visit North Carolina, Michigan and Virginia Tech.”

Fland holds offers from UNC, Auburn, UConn, Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, Illinois, Maryland, UCLA, Villanova and more.

In June, Fland helped the US 17U basketball team win a gold medal during the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.

Fland is from Archbishop Stepinac (NY) High School, the same high school that current guard RJ Davis is from. Cole Anthony also spent time in the New York area for high school before transferring to Oak Hill.

Cole Anthony takes a dig at Duke in Summer League interview

Former UNC basketball standout Cole Anthony took a dig at the Duke Blue Devils during an interview at the NBA Summer League.

Former UNC basketball point guard [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag] spent just one season in Chapel Hill before bolting for the NBA draft and being selected by the Orlando Magic. But Anthony is forever a Tar Heel and he’s making sure his new teammate knows that too.

The Magic took Duke standout Paolo Banchero No. 1 overall in the 2022 NBA draft as now there’s a UNC-Duke connection on the roster. For Anthony, he’s excited to play with Banchero and during an interview in the NBA Summer League, he said that he thinks Banchero has a high ceiling and will be really good after working out with him.

“But man, that kid is so talented, he loves the game,” Anthony said. “I got the chance to actually get in the gym with him right after the draft and he loves it. He works hard and I think he’s got a really, really high ceiling. I think he’s gonna be really good”

However, he did have a little fun with the rivalry after when Cassidy Hubbarth mentioned UNC-Duke coming together.

Man, them Duke dudes know they don’t got nothing on us,” Anthony said.  “Wendell [Carter Jr.] and Paolo both know that.”

You can watch the clip below:

Anthony is making sure he’s having some fun with his new teammate who came from Duke. And I’m sure he’s had some trash talk after Duke lost twice to UNC in their three meetings last season including the Final Four.

We already know that Banchero isn’t happy about that last one

Watch: Cole Anthony and Paolo Banchero work out together

Former UNC basketball guard Cole Anthony was working out with new Magic teammate and former Duke forward Paolo Banchero in New York.

Former UNC basketball guard [autotag]Cole Anthony[/autotag] added an interesting new teammate to his Orlando Magic roster last week at the NBA Draft.

Duke forward Paolo Banchero was selected No. 1 overall by the Orlando Magic in last week’s draft and has already begun building a relationship with the Magic guard.

Anthony, originally from New York, was back in town over the last few weeks and invited his new teammate to workout with him.

Banchero averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in his lone season for Duke. The 6-foot-10 forward will add to one of the youngest NBA rosters in the league in Orlando, but his skill on the perimeter will be a welcomed addition.

For Anthony, he is coming off of his second season in the NBA. He averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game last year. He had nine double-doubles with points and then either rebounds or assists last year. His best scoring output was 33 points twice.

Below is a video of the two working out together.

ACC players selected in the 2022 NBA draft

Who from the Irish’s conference have made the jump?

For the fourth time since 1999, a Duke player was the first overall selection of the NBA draft. That also made it the ninth consecutive year in which the ACC had one of its players taken within the first four picks. The conference had a decent night overall, but the 2022 NBA Draft particularly was amazing for Duke, like that surprises anyone. Meanwhile, Notre Dame saw one of its own selected in the first round, which had not happened in seven years.

While it would be nice to guarantee that all of these players will hit it big in the NBA, we all know that’s unlikely. Some might be future superstars, and others might not even register a single minute in the league. Time will let all of these careers play out, and it’s not really the time to speculate on who will be good or bad. This is the time for them to celebrate the next chapter of their lives.

Here are the ACC players who were drafted by NBA teams in 2022:
