Indiana State winning the NIT could prove how dumb the men’s NCAA tournament committee was

Let’s go Sycamores!

Happy Thursday, friends! There’s college basketball on Thursday before we get the women’s and men’s Final Four and championship games in the next few days.

It’s … the men’s NIT final?

Now, normally I wouldn’t be so amped up about the NIT (I’m the casualest of casuals in college hoops who only pays attention in March!). But Indiana State is marching in to the final against Seton Hall on Thursday night, and that means we get to watch the bespectacled Robbie Avila cook. Dude is really good at basketball.

It’s also a chance for some kind of redemption. The Sycamores should have been in the men’s NCAA tournament this year but were completely snubbed by the selection committee. Instead, we got Virginia somehow making it and a First Four one-and-done appearance that had everyone wishing Indiana State made it instead.

So I’m hoping that Avila and the Sycamores win to prove that we all missed out on March Madness greatness.

Malachi Flynn scored 50 points?! Malachi Flynn scored 50 points!

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Scoring in the NBA is nuts this year, but here’s the best story: Malachi Flynn was traded twice this year (to the Knicks, then to the Pistons) and had a previous career-high of 27 points.

On Thursday, he EXPLODED for 50. And our Bryan Kalbrosky has a fact about that:

Even crazier, though, is that Flynn entered the game with the lowest scoring average from someone with a 50-point game.

Flynn averaged just 5.2 points per game before this random scoring outburst.

While the Pistons are having a dreadful season, it was amazing that the guard was given a chance to prove that this is something that he is capable of on the court.

No matter what happens during the rest of his basketball career, Flynn will always have the 50-point game associated with his name. It just goes to show that anyone can get hot on any given night if they get the right opportunity.

Amazing.

The Stefon Diggs drama finally ends

 Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It’s always amazing to me when NFL players send cryptic tweets and everyone goes wild about it and then nothing happens for a bit … and then SOMETHING happens.

That’s Stefon Diggs, but for what feels like a while. There were cryptic tweets, including one a few weeks ago and another just hours before he was dealt from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans. WOW! Here’s a look at some of the stuff we wrote about it:

Quick hits: Angel Reese is going pro … Travis Kelce is going to the Eras Tour again … and more

Angel Reese declared for the WNBA draft, which is awesome. Kim Mulkey said goodbye on Instagram.

— Travis Kelce confirmed he’ll go see some of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Europe. Here’s how their schedules line up.

— Shohei Ohtani hit his first Dodgers dinger but didn’t have to pay much to a fan for the ball.

— Here’s everything we know about the proposed college football super league.

TCU fans graciously paid it forward, donating over $23,000 to Indiana’s Special Olympics

The Special Olympics helped move a Super Regional from Terre Haute to Fort Worth. TCU fans showed their gratitude with donations.

Indiana State was supposed to be hosting a Super Regional this weekend. Instead, the 16th-seeded Sycamores will travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a date with unseeded TCU instead.

The change in venue was necessitated thanks to preexisting plans in Terre Haute. The Indiana chapter of the Special Olympics had already reserved the date to hold its 51st annual Summer Games the same weekend. Without enough hotel rooms to meet the demand of local and traveling fans — as well as ESPN’s production crew — the decision was made to shift the best-of-three series south following the Horned Frogs’ upset of top-seeded Arkansas Monday.

It’s a difficult decision for Sycamores players who earned the right to play one more series at home, only to have it taken away for reasons outside their control. And it’s an unexpected blessing for a TCU team that suddenly gets the advantage of a partisan crowd. But the Horned Frog faithful are paying their good fortune forward with donations to Special Olympics Indiana.

The Lupton Drinking Club, a TCU sports-based podcast, put out a call to action June 5. In fewer than two days, it’s been retweeted more than 800 times. That’s resulted in more than $23,000 in new funding for the Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Indiana CEO Jeff Mohler saw the donations as a sigil of true sportsmanship.

“Sports at its truest,” Mohler told Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR. “The most fundamental part of our society is for the betterment of who we are as individuals and this is a testimony to that, what sports could and should be. It is more than competition, although we do like to keep score, obviously the scoreboard is on, but we can all be better for it, if we live it in the right spirit.”

In this case, TCU fans were able to turn a negative for Indiana State into a positive for residents across the Hoosier State. That may not be the outcome Sycamore fans wanted, but it’s a result with which they can find a silver lining.

Larry Bird’s younger brother Eddie also played the sport – but never made the NBA

“After the first few games here, Coach told me I was going to have to face up to the pressure, ignore it, go out and play my game,” said Eddie.

You might think having a superstar brother in the NBA might make things easier for you as a player, but the younger brother of Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird would not have agreed when he was playing collegiately. Eddie Bird played for Indiana State like his older brother, but things did not get off to a great start. “After the first few games here, Coach told me I was going to have to face up to the pressure, ignore it, go out and play my game,” said Eddie in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

“He told me to concentrate on defense, hit the boards harder, and do my best,” added the younger Bird. “He can`t escape the pressure,” suggested Indiana State head coach Ron Greene. “He has to overcome it or play something else.”

“I keep telling him he`s just a freshman. And I`m sure when Larry was a freshman, he made some mistakes.”

‘I`m trying to get away from Larry, trying to be my own self. They say I act a lot like Larry. Maybe that`s why we don`t get along too good,” shared Eddie.

The younger of the Bird brothers never made the leap to the next level, but had a solid career at Indiana State, averaging 14.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 37.4% from deep.

Purdue vs Indiana State Game Preview

Why Indiana State Will Win

The Sycamores were able to get over a ton of mistakes to slip past North Alabama 17-14 in overtime to start the season off with a win. The defense was fantastic, the front didn’t allow a thing against the run, and there were plenty of plays behind the line to be disruptive.

Purdue’s defense was terrific in the loss to Penn State right up until the very end. ISU QB Gavin Screws has to get hot early and take advantage of a Boilermaker team that might not be 100% focused after the brutal loss.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue should be able to do whatever it wants.

This is the game to test a few things out. The offense will work with the running attack a bit, it’ll get the timing down a bit better with a passing game that couldn’t quite click when it absolutely had to, and the D will take care of the rest.

Indiana State couldn’t get the offense going against North Alabama. It’s going to be a grind to keep the chains moving, be shocked if the running attack gets anywhere near 100 yards, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue will try to erase the Penn State collapse on the first few drives.

It’ll be a good start, the defense will live behind the Indiana State line, and there won’t be any drama after the first quarter. Purdue won’t make this a total wipeout – the Sycamore defense is good enough to hold up for stretches – but the offense won’t be able to take advantage of the opportunities.

Indiana State won’t get two takeaways and 14 penalties like it came up with against North Alabama.

ACC players selected in the 2022 NBA draft

Who from the Irish’s conference have made the jump?

For the fourth time since 1999, a Duke player was the first overall selection of the NBA draft. That also made it the ninth consecutive year in which the ACC had one of its players taken within the first four picks. The conference had a decent night overall, but the 2022 NBA Draft particularly was amazing for Duke, like that surprises anyone. Meanwhile, Notre Dame saw one of its own selected in the first round, which had not happened in seven years.

While it would be nice to guarantee that all of these players will hit it big in the NBA, we all know that’s unlikely. Some might be future superstars, and others might not even register a single minute in the league. Time will let all of these careers play out, and it’s not really the time to speculate on who will be good or bad. This is the time for them to celebrate the next chapter of their lives.

Here are the ACC players who were drafted by NBA teams in 2022:

Source: Former Notre Dame captain Maurice Crum hired at Ole Miss

Another former Irish standout is moving up the college coaching ranks.

Former Notre Dame linebacker and captain Maurice Crum has been a sought-after college coach over the past decade. Many see him as having a bright future, including Lane Kiffin. We know Kiffin thinks highly of him because Krum reportedly has been hired as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Ole Miss. This comes after he’s spent the past five years at Western Kentucky, most recently as defensive coordinator:

Crum played for the Irish from 2005 to 2008. Over 38 career games, he had 248 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, eight sacks and six forced fumbles. His lone touchdown came via fumble return in the Irish’s 2007 road win over UCLA. He returned to the Irish as a graduate assistant in 2015 before taking off for his lone season on the staff at Indiana State.

Congratulations to Crum for landing his most high-profile coaching job yet. Here’s hoping this is the next stop on his way to leading his own program.

Vols outlast Indiana State in extra innings

Recapping Tennessee’s win over Indiana State on Sunday.

After being swept in a doubleheader Saturday, Tennessee found its way back into the win column with a walk-off Sunday afternoon.

The No. 15 Volunteers outlasted Indiana State, 6-5 in 11 innings, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. UT claimed the game when Luc Lipcius scored on an error by the Sycamores (3-4).

The Vols (7-2) had to put in extra work to salvage a series split against Indiana State, but Tennessee grabbed the lead early as it scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Pete Derkay started the scoring in the opening frame with an RBI single. He would later come home on a hit by Jordan Beck. Connor Pavolony drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
