Bengals sign G Cody Ford in free agency

A new OL for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals added to the offensive line on Thursday by signing guard Cody Ford.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the news.

Word about Ford visiting the Bengals got out on Thursday morning in the wake of the team making the huge splash on new left tackle Orlando Brown.

Now the team nets Ford, a 26-year-old former second-round pick who has recently spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills.

Ford projects as solid depth behind starting guards Cordell Volson and Alex Cappa, something the team wanted to grab this offseason after the rash of injuries exposed the depth problems in the playoffs last season.

Going into the summer, Ford will compete with the likes of Max Scharping and Jackson Carman for backup reps.

Bengals to host free agent OG Cody Ford on visit

The Bengals will host a free agent on a visit.

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t done looking at the offensive line just because they made a huge splash with offensive tackle Orlando Brown.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bengals will host free agent guard Cody Ford on a visit.

Ford, 26, was a second-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2019 and has spent the last two seasons in a backup role for the Bills and Arizona Cardinals. He’s got experience at right tackle and at both guard spots.

While he’s had his struggles, Ford played quite well in college on Oklahoma’s line with…Orlando Brown. Still, this is probably more of a depth addition for a line that would appear to have five starters set already. But after the injury bug last year exposed the depth problems in the playoffs, the Bengals clearly aren’t going to sit on their hands.

OL Cody Ford designated to return from IR

He returns to practice for the first time this season and could possibly be activated for the Cardinals’ Week 7 game against the Saints.

The Arizona Cardinals could get some help back on the offensive line. They designated offensive lineman Cody Ford for return from injured reserve, allowing him to begin practicing.

He suffered an ankle injury and was placed on injured reserve before the team’s first game.

It is possible for him to be activated and to play on Thursday, but head coach Kliff Kingsbury said it would depend on how he looks in practice after not having done any football work in nearly two months.

The Cardinals have three weeks to reinstate him to the active roster or he will revert to injured reserve.

If he is not ready to be activated before Thursday’s game and start at left guard, Max Garcia will be in the starting lineup.

New OL Cody Ford to play in Cardinals’ preseason finale

The Cardinals want to get Ford comfortable and reps in a game setting.

The Arizona Cardinals have one final preseason game this weekend as they take on the Tennessee Titans on the road Saturday evening. As they have this preseason, they do not plan on playing their starters, except for a select few young players.

That also includes a new addition.

The Cardinals acquired offensive lineman Cody Ford from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round draft pick and it is because they have depth issues on the offensive line.

He lined up at left guard with the first-team offensive in place of Justin Pugh, who has a neck injury, for the team’s joint practice with the Titans on Wednesday.

Because he is new to the team, he is expected to play in the game on Saturday.

“We want to get him a comfort level playing in our system and just how we operate and the tempo of things,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Thursday. “So I expect him to play a little bit.”

It is how they have handled Will Hernandez, new to the team. As he was new to the system, coming in as a free agent this offseason, he got all the training camp reps and played in the first preseason game for a lot of snaps. He got hurt so he missed the game last weekend.

There appears to be a possibility that Ford will be a starter in Week 1. If that is the case, it will be good to get Ford as many snaps as they can.

Cardinals might need Cody Ford to start in Week 1

Comments made by Kliff Kingsbury suggest that Justin Pugh might not ne able to play in Week 1.

The Arizona Cardinals made a surprise trade to acquire offensive lineman Cody Ford from the Buffalo Bills. Many wondered why they made the move.

It turns out that he could be in the starting lineup when the Cardinals take the field at State Farm Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.

When the Cardinals participated in a joint practice in Nashville with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, Ford was at left guard with the starters, replacing Justin Pugh, who has suffered a stinger.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury explained the reason for the trade was because of injuries.

“Some of the injuries we’ve inside there, we felt like it was a position where we could get some more depth,” he said Tuesday.

They have suffered injuries to both their starting guards — Pugh and Will Hernandez. Hernandez is expected by by next week and Pugh’s status is unknown.

But what is telling is what Kingsbury said Wednesday after he worked with the first team against the Titans.

“We’re excited,” he said. “To be able to come out here and pick up enough to go in there was pretyt impressive.

“We’ve just got to keep spoonfeeding him the offense and get him ready for Week 1.”

Obviously, this could be to get him ready for Week 1 in general, but he wouldn’t have to be all that ready for Week 1 if isn’t going to be in the lineup.

The situation with Pugh’s injury is suddenly something to pay attention to.

Cardinals make trade for OL Cody Ford, Kyler Murray’s college teammate

The Cardinals acquire Kyler Murray’s former college teammate from the Bills in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round draft pick.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a trade Monday afternoon, but it wasn’t for a position many expected. It was not to acquire a cornerback.

The team announced it traded a 2023 fifth-round draft pick to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for offensive lineman Cody Ford, who was a second-round pick in 2019.

Ford played three seasons for the Bills, appearing in 38 games, starting 29. He started at right tackle as a rookie and has been at guard since then.

He played collegiately with quarterback Kyler Murray and receiver Marquise Brown at Oklahoma.

The move suggests that either one of the offensive linemen expected to make the team either will be cut, traded or suffered a long-term injury.

On the surface, he would seem a logical replacement for Justin Murray. Murray has not played in the preseason and plays both guard and tackle.

Ford is in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make $1.47 million.

The deal is pending Ford passing a physical exam.

To make room for Ford on the roster, the team released receiver Marcell Ateman.

Bills trade OL Cody Ford to Cardinals for fifth-round pick

The Bills have traded OL Cody Ford to the Cardinals for a 5th-round pick next year

The Buffalo Bills are exchanging offensive line depth for draft capital.

The team announced on Monday that it has traded offensive lineman Cody Ford to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Bills, along with every other team, must trim their roster down to 80 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m., so this move frees a roster spot.

Ford was drafted by the Bills 38th overall in the 2019 NFL draft but has struggled to make much of a name for himself. Adding a bit of salt in the wound, Buffalo traded up to take Ford, giving up an extra fifth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in the deal.

Ford originally started at right tackle, playing all 16 games as a rookie, but the Bills then tried him at guard. He didn’t have much success on the interior, starting only seven games last season.

Buffalo trading Ford comes after general manager Brandon Beane backed Ford this spring. Beane referenced another former Bills draft pick, offensive lineman Wyatt Teller, in doing so.

The Bills previously selected Teller and then when it appeared there was not a place for him, he was shipped to the Cleveland Browns. Teller went to to become an All-Pro player.

With Beane risking that same situation, the team clearly hit the end of the line with Ford.

In moving to the Cardinals, Ford reunites with Kyler Murray. He played with the quarterback in college at the University of Oklahoma.

Buffalo Bills trade offensive lineman Cody Ford to the Cardinals

In a move to bolster depth along their offensive line, the Arizona Cardinals traded with the Buffalo Bills for Cody Ford.

The Buffalo Bills have traded offensive lineman Cody Ford to the Arizona Cardinals, in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round selection.

Buffalo drafted Ford in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, out of Oklahoma. He played in 16 games for the Bills as a rookie, making 15 starts, the bulk of which came at right tackle. In the seven games he played in during the 2020 campaign, Ford split time between the two guard positions. His season was cut short with a torn meniscus.

Ford bounced in and out of the lineup during the 2021 season, missing time due to COVID, as well as spending some time on the bench as the Bills shuffled their offensive line around.

Buffalo announced the move on social media:

Arizona is dealing with issues along their offensive line as well. Rookie Marquis Hayes has been dealing with a knee injury, and fellow guard Danny Isidora has been spotted with a walking boot as he also handles a lower-body injury. Reserve lineman Justin Murray has also been dealing with back and knee injuries.

Arizona likely views Ford as a potential depth option on the inside, as well as a potential swing tackle  behind D.J. Humphries and Kelvin Beachum.

Bills trade 2019 2nd-rounder Cody Ford to Cardinals for 2023 5th-round pick

The Buffalo Bills are sending offensive lineman Cody Ford to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft

The Buffalo Bills are moving on from their second-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

Offensive lineman Cody Ford is heading to the Arizona Cardinals in a deal that sends a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft back to Buffalo.

Ford appeared in 38 games for the Bills over his three seasons, making 29 starts. He now joins a Cardinals offense that could definitely use more help up front, and he brings the versatility to play either guard or right tackle.
