Studs and duds in Cardinals’ 42-34 win over Saints

Take a look at the studs and duds from the Cardinals Week 7 home win against the New Orleans Saints

The Arizona Cardinals’ 42-34 win Thursday night over the New Orleans Saints was monumental in keeping their playoff hopes alive. They took care of business. While the Saints certainly are not one of the top teams in the league, the Cardinals needed to earn their first home win since last October, particularly given the injuries to the Saints team.

Arizona did just that. The final score is a bit deceptive, as this game was decided midway through the third quarter. The win gives the Cardinals some momentum, which they’ll need against the 5-1 Minnesota Vikings next week.

It was a fun one for the Cardinals and their fans last night. Let’s dive into the player performances.

WR A.J. Green, though active, did not play against Saints

For the first time in Green’s 12-year career, he was active for a game and did not log a single snap.

The Arizona Cardinals made some adjustments to their lineup in Week 7, attempting to jumpstart what has been a disappointing start to this season. Perhaps the most notable adjustment was at wide receiver.

For the first time in his NFL career, he did not appear in a game in which he was active and dressed for.

We didn’t even have to wait for the official snap counts to come out. The game book that is released minutes after the conclusion of the Cardinals’ 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints Thursday night indicated that three active players for the Cardinals did not play. Two were quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Trace McSorley. The other was Green.

In his entire career, which began in 2011, he had never been active for a game and not played. He had been inactive, on injured reserve and, last year, on the COVID list to miss games, but it was the first time he had ever dressed for a game and not played a single snap.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury said “it just worked out that way” after the game.

“After acquiring Robbie (Anderson), we wanted to get him out there some and get Rondale (Moore) on the field.,” he said.

Green had not produced much through the first six games of 2022. On the season, he has 10 receptions for 56 yards.

His playing time and usage with the return of DeAndre Hopkins from suspension and at the acquisition of Anderson will be something to pay attention to the rest of the way this season.

There was a lot to like and there were still many things not to like.

They had their highest-scoring game since Kliff Kingsbury was hired.

WATCH: Highlights from Cardinals’ 42-34 win over Saints

There were plenty of big plays in the high-scoring Thursday night game in Week 7.

The Arizona Cardinals ended a two-game losing streak this season and also an eight-game losing streak at home with a 42-34 win Thursday night over the New Orleans Saints.

It was the first time since 2016 that the Cardinals scored at least 40 points in a game.

They intercepted Saints quarterback Andy Dalton three times and returned two of the picks for touchdowns in the first half.

Running back Eno Benjamin and receiver DeAndre Hopkins, making his first appearance of the 2022 season following his six-game suspension, had big games. Rookie running back Keaontay Ingram scored his first NFL touchdown. The interceptions by Marco Wilson and Antonio Hamilton were the first of their careers.

If you missed any of the action from the game or just wish to relive it, you can see all the big plays from both teams in the highlight video below.

WATCH: Isaiah Simmons makes one-handed INT and takes it to the house!

The Arizona Cardinals picked off New Orleans Saints quarterback Andy Dalton three times in the first half Thursday night.

The first was by Antonio Hamilton in the end zone. The second was a 38-yard pick-six by Marco Wilson.

The third happened just moments after the Wilson interception. It was another pick-six, but this time it was linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

Dalton dropped back, was pressured and contacted as he threw it. Simmons made a one-handed grab and showed off his sub-4.4 speed, running it 56 yards for a touchdown.

With the two-point conversion, it gave the Cardinals a 28-14 first-half lead.

It was Simmons’ first interception of 2022 and the third of his career.

WATCH: Marco Wilson takes 1st career INT to the house!

Wilson took his first career interception 38 yards for a touchdown, giving the Cardinals their first lead of the game against the Saints.

The Arizona Cardinals picked off New Orleans Saints quarterback Andy Dalton three times in the first half of their Thursday night game.

The second interception of the night went for a touchdown.

Marco Wilson snagged the ball out of the air after the pass after Marquez Callaway failed to catch it and he returned it 38 yards for the touchdown.

It gave the Cardinals a 20-14 first-half lead.

The interception was Wilson’s first in the NFL and it was a good one. He capitalized the play leaping high into the air as he dove for the end zone.

The 2021 fourth-round pick hopefully will make many more plays like this in the future.

WATCH: Kyler Murray gets heated with Kliff Kingsbury

Before tying the score in the second quarter, Murray couldn’t contain his emotions when the offense had to call time out in the red zone.

The Arizona Cardinals tied the score 14-14 late in the first half in their game against the New Orleans Saints Thursday night but before that, there was some Kyler Murray frustration.

After the Cardinals had to burn their final timeout of the half in a goal-to-go situation, Murray was caught by the TV cameras shouting angrily with expletives at head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Murray has been seen multiple times this season frustrated when a play call doesn’t come in.

DeAndre Hopkins got between them and receivers coach Shawn Jefferson also attempted to calm Murray.

The Cardinals scored after that but let his emotions show.

He has been fed up with losing and mistakes.

After the touchdown, the defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns before the end of the first half to take a 28-14 lead into halftime.
