Texas State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

Coastal Carolina isn’t quite the same without Grayson McCall.

The offense still runs well, and there was a terrific balance against Georgia State last week, but it was a 42-40 loss helped by two turnovers. If that doesn’t seem like two giveaways for a high-powered team like this shouldn’t matter, it’s a bit wrong.

Coastal Carolina hadn’t turned the ball over twice in a game since last year’s win over South Alabama in early November. It was a 15-game stretch without two big mistakes, and Texas State will need more than that.

The passing attack hasn’t been bad – hitting 260 yards in four of the last five games – but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The Bobcat defense has been crazy-consistent in how mediocre it is.

It’s going to give up at least 200 yards through the air and over 160 yards on the ground, because that’s what it does.

Coastal Carolina QB Bryce Carpenter isn’t McCall, but he’s a veteran who knows what he’s doing. He’ll hit enough deep shots to open things up, and the deep rotation of running backs will rip off yards in chunks on the way to well over 200 yards.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Chanticleers might need too much help to win another Sun Belt title, but they’ll take care of the Bobcats in a bit of a shootout, and then hope Troy can get by Appalachian State.

Just getting a win on Senior Day will be enough.

Georgia State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The offense isn’t the same without Grayson McCall.

The Coastal Carolina offense wasn’t the machine rolls over the mediocre teams, but it didn’t blow up against Appalachian State or Georgia Southern, and the yards didn’t produce a ton of points in the 35-28 win over Troy. Now the star quarterback is out, and veteran Bryce Carpenter is in.

The Chanticleers won 28-8 over Georgia Southern thanks to the defense and running game, but Carpenter threw for just 85 yards, and now gets a Georgia State defense that’s been solid overall against the pass.

It will give up 200 yards or so if everything is working, but it won’t get gouged.

The Georgia State rushing offense has been terrific – tearing off over 200 yards in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina is still terrific.

It might not be the same without McCall, but the ground attack took over with 220 yards against Georgia Southern and ran for over 200 yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

There’s a good rotation, everyone is fresh, and the offense should be able to dink and dunk enough to keep things moving against a Georgia State team that doesn’t do a whole lot to control the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

No, this isn’t the Coastal Carolina offense of the past few seasons, but it’s still good enough and the defense continues to be great.

Georgia State needs to run the ball – and it should – but it’ll come up just short as the second half rolls on. It’ll be a close, entertaining game that will come down to moving the chains.

Coastal Carolina will do it when needed, and Georgia State won’t.

Coastal Carolina vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Clay Helton isn’t there yet.

Georgia Southern has hired the former USC head coach to change around the program, its style, and bring it to the forefront of an improved Sun Belt going forward. For now, it’s still going to be a rough run.

The Eagles aren’t running quite as well as they need to considering it’s their style, but that’s not their biggest issue.

Grayson McCall, it’s time to eat.

The Coastal Carolina quarterback is hitting 73% of his passes averaging over 13 yards per toss with 17 touchdowns and two picks. He’s going to pick apart the nation’s worst pass defense that allowed over 400 yards to South Alabama a few weeks ago, has no interceptions outside of the four it came up with against Arkansas State, and will have an impossible time getting a third down stop.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

What’s been Coastal Carolina’s issue over the last two games?

It lost to Appalachian State because it couldn’t establish the run. It had a hard time against Troy because the defense had a mediocre day.

Georgia Southern has to do what it does, but at a higher level. It can’t have a mediocre day on the ground – it’s other 300 yards or forget it.

Coastal Carolina has yet to allow more than 228, but the offense has to find a groove right away all while the defense has to somehow takeaway McCall’s options when he gets on the move.

The Eagles have to own outside of the hashmarks.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rocky two games for the Chanticleers, but that’s all about to change.

They’re going to roll at will on the way to a big first half – McCall will put up massive numbers – and they’ll coast in from there while hoping Appalachian State somehow slips against Arkansas State.

Coastal Carolina vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

What did Appalachian State do that was so right in the win over Coastal Carolina?

It got off to a hot start, it was more physical on the offensive line and ran well, and the defensive front was able to get out on the Chanticleer playmakers in open space and swarm, holding the O to just 55 rushing yards.

Troy has to run well right away. It’s coming off its best running day of its season with 200 yards in the win over Texas State.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss – it can get into the backfield and bother the Coastal Carolina running game before it gets started.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Troy hasn’t seen anything like this.

It had to deal with the Liberty offense and all of its playmakers – and held up reasonably well – but it was still a 21-13 loss.

Appalachian State played as well as could be asked for in the win over the Chanticleers, and it was still close in a 30-27 fight.

It took a monster offensive performance from the Mountaineers, and Troy doesn’t have that much firepower. There’s not much from the ground attack and there’s nothing happening with the passing game down the field.

The Trojan D might be great, but get down early, and forget it.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina will bounce back fast.

The speed of the Chanticleer offense will offset the Trojan pass a wee bit, and there won’t be enough turnovers to matter.

Troy takes the ball away a ton thanks to it pressure, but Coastal Carolina’s offense will be efficient and won’t screw this up after a great first quarter.

Coastal Carolina vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The machine marches on.

There was a good fight against Buffalo, but that’s been it with three straight blowout wins thanks to an offense that went from great to totally unstoppable.

How good have the Chanticleers been? Okay, so UMass, Arkansas State, and ULM might night seem all that great, but ULM just whacked Liberty. Coastal Carolina beat those three by a combined score of 165 to 29 with the nation’s No. 2 offense behind Ohio State, the No. 1 most efficient attack, the No. 1 scoring offense, the No. 1 best O on third downs, and it keeps rolling on from there.

The defense has been great, too.

On the flip side, for all of the good things Appalachian State has done, it was just okay on third downs before cranking up an 0-for-11 day in a puzzling disaster of a performance last week against Louisiana.

The talent is there on the Mountaineers, and the defensive front is good enough to get into the Coastal Carolina backfield, but there are way too many holes in the game. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Coastal Carolina doesn’t take the ball away. Start there, because it’s a big thing for Appalachian State.

The Chanticleers have just three takeaways on the year, and the Mountaineers could use the break after giving it up four times against Louisiana and nine times in the last four games.

More than any one thing Appalachian State can do, though – and when the ground game is on, it can run very, very well – is the competition. This team is battle-hardened, and Coastal Carolina isn’t.

ASU might have lost to Louisiana last week, but that’s a good team on the road. Marshall is solid. East Carolina will go bowling. Miami is struggling, but it’s still Miami, and Georgia State on the road isn’t all that bad a win.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina has faced one team in Buffalo that has a realistic shot of going bowling. The opponents Coastal Carolina has faced are a combined 11-26 and only 3-3 ULM doesn’t have a losing record.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State is much, much better than the 41-13 loss to Louisiana, but can it keep up with a Coastal Carolina attack that’s hit the 200-yard mark in both rushing and passing in every game?

This is a massive step up in competition on a weird Wednesday night game, but the Chanticleers are more rested with 13 days off, the offense has been too sharp, and they’ll overcome a strong day by the Appalachian State running game to take total control of the Sun Belt race.

Auburn drops out of AP top 25 poll

Auburn has dropped from the AP top 25.

AP logic continues to confuse me.

Auburn has been dropped eight spots to 26th in the latest AP top 25 rankings, sitting just outside the poll behind Texas, who lost in humiliating fashion to an Oklahoma team that has pieced together struggle win after struggle win this season. College football is a mess. A fun mess, but a mess.

Auburn is 4-2, 1-1 in the SEC after their loss. Other teams besides Texas that don’t deserve to be in over Auburn (who has losses to the No. 1 and No. 7 teams in the nation) include San Diego State, SMU, and Coastal Carolina (Yes, I said it).

Auburn looks to bounce back in a tough road environment against No. 17 Arkansas next Saturday. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. central time on CBS.

This piece is almost certainly going to be wrong.

Two years ago we didn’t get Memphis – who ended up getting the New Year’s Six Bowl nod – and last season we weren’t even in the right zip code when it came to the rise of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

But we did have Cincinnati on the 2020 list.

So far in the College Football Playoff era, six teams from the Group of Five conferences – the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt – have been the highest-ranked conference champion in the final CFP rankings to get the New Year’s Six spot. None of them have been able to get into the playoff, but if the tournament expands, that will change.

Boise State beat Arizona in the first shot for the Group of Five, and Houston followed it up with a win over Florida State. Western Michigan, Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCF (twice) are the other schools to get the big spotlight game, going 3-4 overall and generally playing very, very well in the losses.

This year, the Group of Five champion – if it’s not in the College Football Playoff – will either play in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl or the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

So what does it take for a Group of Five program to get that New Year’s Six slot? Realistically – but not technically – 1) needs to go unbeaten or finish with just one loss, 2) it should have at least one signature win to impress the College Football Playoff committee that does the rankings, and 3), as part of the requirement, it has to win its conference championship.

Here’s hoping that a few teams will rise up and shock the world, but assume that one of these teams will likely have the best shot at getting the New Year’s Six nod.

Let’s start with a total cop-out.

College Football Group of Five Programs in the New Year’s Six Hunt

5. San Jose State at Nevada winner

CFN 2021 San Jose State Preview

Boise State is always the instant pick from the Mountain West to have a shot at the New Year’s Six bowl bid, but this year’s team is undergoing a coaching overhaul and it has a few tweaks it has to make, but there are three problems …

Non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule.

The Broncos should be strong enough in a relatively weak Mountain Division to get to the Mountain West title game, but they have to start the season at UCF, host Oklahoma State, and they have to go to BYU.

If they win all three they should probably be No. 1 on this list, if they win two of the three they’ll be in the hunt, and if they win just one, forget it. Throw in the road games at San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State, and it’s a tough ask.

CFN 2021 Nevada Preview

From the West, Fresno State will be dangerous, San Diego State always has a puncher’s chance to get to the NY6, and Hawaii will be plucky, but it should – like last year – come down to the showdown between San Jose State and Nevada.

The Spartans have to go to USC, but they other three non-conference games are against Western Michigan, New Mexico State and Southern Utah. If they’re good enough to win the Mountain West title, they’ll be good enough to win all three of those.

They don’t have to play Boise State and get San Diego State and Fresno State at home. However, they start November with a trip to Reno.

The Wolf Pack are loaded with high-octane offensive talent, the overall experience is in place, and the coaching staff is hitting its stride. They have to at least split the road games against Cal and Kansas State, and they follow that up with a trip to Boise State. Throw in road games at San Diego State and Fresno State, and there’s a problem.

However, get by San Jose State, go on to win the Mountain West title, and they should be in the hunt.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The 2019 Coastal Carolina offense was okay. It had some explosive moments, it was almost perfectly balanced, and it was good enough to put up some strong numbers. The 2020 offense averaged well over a yard more per play and ended up cranking out over 400 yards eight times. It averaged 450 yards and 37 points per game, and now almost everyone is back.

Leading rusher CJ Marable is gone. That’s it. All the other parts return, including third-leading rusher Reese White – who ran for 478 yards and six scores – and 220-pound senior Shermari Jones. They have a deep and talented line to work behind with depth and options to go along with the experienced starters. Guards Trey Carter and Willie Lampkin are the best of the bunch – the running game inside will work.

Grayson McCall turned into a superstar. In his first year the young quarterback ran the quick-paced offense to near perfection and efficiency, and now he knows what he’s doing. The backup situation is a fight with Fred Payton transferring to Mercer, but Bryce Carpenter is a veteran with enough time logged in to be fine.

The receiving corps is loaded. 6-2, 190-pound senior Jaivon Heiligh led the way with 65 catches for 998 yards and ten scores, tight end Isaiah Likely averaged over 20 yards per catch with five scores, and 6-3, 220-pound senior Kameron Brown adds even more size to the mix.
