Kansas Jayhawks RB earns awards after standout performance vs. Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes

Kansas #Jayhawks RB Devin Neal earned awards for his standout performance against ‘Coach Prime’ and the Colorado #Buffaloes.

The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off a win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, but while the defending champions were in Charlotte, the Kansas Jayhawks took their place at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday.

The Jayhawks are currently in the middle of a major renovation to the David Booth Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, and with construction well underway, the Chiefs were kind enough to let Kansas use its Arrowhead for a few of its home games.

Though head coach Lance Leipold’s team has underperformed this season, a few Jayhawk standouts have given the Kansas faithful hope in recent weeks, including dynamic running back Devin Neal.

Neal had a huge performance for the Jayhawks on Saturday, totaling 287 yards and four touchdowns against ‘Coach Prime’ and the No. 16 Colorado Buffaloes.

The elusive back was rightfully recognized on Monday for his performance, receiving AP Offensive Player of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, among other awards.

Though Kansas’ season will come to an end soon, expect to see lots of hype around Neal as draft boards begin to take shape.

Deion Sanders calls out former president for comments on Colorado

Former President Barack Obama said Colorado only had two good players before the Arizona game, and Buffs coach Deion Sanders called him out after his team thrashed the Wildcats.

If we know anything about Deion Sanders, it’s the Colorado coach keeps receipts. Whether local (or national) reporters, fans, broadcasters or other naysayers, coach Prime knows what was said, and he has no problem letting you know about it.

Even the former president of the United States isn’t off limits.

After Colorado’s 34-7 thrashing of the Arizona Wildcats on the road in Week 8, Sanders took to the podium to call out Barack Obama for a comment he made recently describing the Buffs as a team that only has two good players.

“President Obama is everything to me. I love him, I admire him, I respect him tremendously,” Sanders opened with, before continuing. “But, I heard what he said. President, I heard what you said man. … They got two good players? We got more than two good players. He did his homework, but president … come on man.”

Prime smiled through his comments, which is much easier to do after his team scored on the first drive of the game and never let up. Colorado’s defense held the Wildcats to a first-quarter touchdown and coasted to an easy victory to move to 5-2 (3-1 Big 12).

The Buffs host Cincinnati at home in Week 9, part of a favorable remaining schedule that includes road games at Texas Tech and Kansas and home battles against Utah and Oklahoma State.

Deion Sanders says Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury is ‘brilliant’

Deion Sanders is a huge fan of Kliff Kingsbury.

While everyone around the NFL and media world is praising Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, and rightfully so, don’t forget about offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

The Commanders are red hot, sitting at 3-1, winners of three straight games and alone atop the NFC East. Washington’s offense has punted once in three weeks and has only turned the ball over once this season. Daniels already looks like an NFL superstar four games into his career.

Kingsbury, who received plenty of criticism for his four-year stint as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, looks rejuvenated as Washington’s offensive coordinator.

Kingsbury has plenty of fans in the NFL and college football. One of those fans is Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.

“Kliff Kingsbury was somebody that is the engineer behind this ship,” Sanders said on Monday’s episode of “Nightcap” with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. “He was doing the same thing, and it didn’t work out in Arizona. OK, Kliff Kingsbury is a brilliant play-caller. Brilliant.”

If Washington’s offensive success continues, you can bet Kingsbury’s stay with the Commanders will be short. Some criticized head coach Dan Quinn for his choice of Kingsbury, which now seems foolish.

Will Colorado’s Travis Hunter be a dominant 2-way player in the NFL?

Eagles DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson questions whether Colorado’s Travis Hunter can dominate as a 2-way player in NFL

Shedeur Sanders threw for 445 yards and four touchdowns — three to Travis Hunter — and Colorado held off FCS power North Dakota State 31-26 in a hard-fought victory on Thursday night in Boulder.

Hunter recorded seven passes for 132 yards and the three scores, including a 3-yard touchdown reception with a defensive back hanging all over him, giving Colorado a 31-20 lead with 7:57 left.

Hunter was dominant on offense, playing 43 snaps on defense, logging three tackles, and playing shutdown defense at cornerback. Hunter will surely be a top-five pick in next April’s NFL Draft, and his dominance — not seen since Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey — have some debating whether that pace, snap count and big plays will translate to the NFL.

In a respectful Twitter debate on X, Robert Griffin III insinuated that Hunter would continue to dominate, while Eagles C.J. Gardner-Johnson said, “Not so fast.”

It’s been almost 30 years since a player other than a quarterback, offensive tackle, or edge rusher was taken with the No. 1 pick. The last time was in 1996 when the New York Jets took USC wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson.

A dynamic offensive weapon, Hunter could be an even better cornerback. In a game where pass catchers are making $30 million per season, Hunter could position himself to reset the market at that position if he can transition without difficulty.

The questions are intriguing and will be answered a year from now.

Why Colorado should be on upset watch against North Dakota State

Why the North Dakota State Bison could pull a major upset in Week 1 over the Colorado Buffaloes.

On Thursday evening, Folsom Field in Boulder is going to be rocking with energy to celebrate the return of college football. The Colorado Buffaloes, the team with the most hype a season ago, will host the Bison of North Dakota State, a powerhouse FCS program.

The Bison went 11-4 a season ago and fell in the semifinal game 31-29 in overtime to Montana out of the Big Sky.  After that game, the Bison started a search for a new head coach as Matt Entz left the program after two national titles, taking over as a linebackers coach at USC. North Dakota State hired Tim Polasek to replace him on the sidelines.

For the Buffaloes, they started last season red hot, winning their first three games. The hype machine was strong, but then losses in eight out of their final nine games put them at 4-8 on the season. The Buffaloes finished 12th in the Pac-12 conference. Colorado is the favorite to win this game but will have to fix some things up from the 2023 season.

Bison Looking to Shock the World

Any time a non-power five program can go on the road and win a game is a big deal in college football. That will multiply with the national media all over Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes.

Cam Miller returns as the signal caller for the Bison. He tossed for over 2,600 yards and 19 touchdowns a season ago. He was also the second-best rusher on the team with 629 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Bison will turn to Marty Brown, a redshirt freshman, along with TK Marshall in the backfield. Receivers Zach Mathis and Raja Nelson should get the call. Their best receiver Eli Green from a season ago is now with Iowa State.

Sanders Show in Boulder

Deion Sanders got a full season to recruit, so fewer and fewer of the players on the field are not his recruits. Freshman Jordan Seaton was the big addition to the offense. His job is to keep quarterback Shedeur Sanders upright. The Buffaloes are projected to start six newcomers on the offensive side, with five via the transfer portal.

Sanders tossed for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions a season ago. He was sacked 52 times, which is alarming for the Buffaloes. Charlie Offerdahl is the lead running back coming into the season. He carried the ball just twice last season. Dylan Edwards and Anthony Hankerson led the team, but the Buffaloes offense was never a run first.

Travis Hunter and Jimmy Horn Jr are set to lead the receiving core for the Buffaloes. Hunter, who also plays defense, was second on the team with 57 receptions. Horn led the team with six touchdowns and had 58 receptions in 2024.

North Dakota State Bison vs. Colorado Buffaloes Score Prediction:

More of the same from Coach Prime and the Buffaloes. The inability to protect the quarterback, undisciplined at the wrong time, and a lack of getting stops gets the best of the Buffaloes in Game 1. The North Dakota State Bison pull a Week 1 stunner in Boulder.

College Sports Wire score prediction: North Dakota State Bison 31-28 over Colorado Buffaloes.

Deion Sanders and Colorado among college football’s most overrated teams

Colorado is listed among the most overrated teams in college football as coach Deion Sanders enters his second season in Boulder.

With the start of the College Football season fast approaching, writers throughout the country are talking about what they expect from the 2024 season. The Big 12 season starts on August 29th, and none of the preseason rankings and opinions will matter when the guys hit the field.

Still, the writers at CBS Sports discussed some of the overrated and underrated teams coming into the season. When discussing some of the overrated teams, one that stuck out was Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes. The Buffaloes are getting tons of hype once again in the second season with Coach Prime at the helm. This is what CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd had to say about Colorado:

Where do you want to start? Coach Prime owned September last season before reality kicked in. He was exposed for not hitting the portal hard enough in both lines and the Buffs finished 1-8. It’s hard to envision Deion Sanders turning it around in one season. The schedule is one of the toughest in the Big 12. Colorado opens with North Dakota State at home, and we know the Bison are giant killers. Then there are back-to-back road games at Nebraska and Colorado State both of which are big-time revenge games. The Cornhuskers and Rams will be ready. The rules say quarterback Shedeur Sanders has to play another year, but what kind of shape will he be in for the NFL? The 56 sacks allowed by Colorado last season were the most surrendered by a Power Five squad since 2012. I’m thinking twice about climbing on the Deion hype train again.

The other two overrated Big 12 teams listed are Arizona and Kansas State. The question for Arizona is how they adjust to their new conference following a loss of 28 transfers. The question for Kansas State is their quarterback play. Can Avery Johnson be the guy?

The first games on August 29th features Colorado at home against North Dakota State. Kansas State hosts Tennessee Martin on August 31st, and Arizona is at home against New Mexico the same day.

The EA Sports Love-Fest with Colorado Buffaloes is Laughable

Stop trying to make Buffs happen.

“Stop trying to make fetch happen!”

Except change “fetch” to “Colorado football” and the quote from the hit movie Mean Girls that featured Lindsay Lohan back in 2004 would be on to the upcoming new college football video game from EA Sports.

Colorado finished last year with a 4-8 overall record, going just 1-8 in the final year of the Pac 12.  Sure, they hit the transfer portal hard and could possibly go as far as to qualify for a bowl game this year, but EA Sports thinks they’re a top-20 team entering 2024.

EA Sports released their team ratings on Thursday, at least the top 25 offenses and defenses and guess what.

The Colorado Buffaloes, fresh off that 4-8 campaign, checked into the top-20 in both.

EA Sports ranked Colorado’s offense an 89, which tied them for the fifth-highest rating in the game.  In case you were curious, Colorado’s offense averaged the 99th most yards per play in 2023.

Defensively, Colorado gave up 30 or more points seven times in 12 games last year.  Despite that the Buffaloes were given an 84 overall rating, good for the 20th best in the game.

Seeing as EA Sports ranked Colorado to have both a top-20 offense and defense, one would think when the team rankings come out that they’ll be a top-20 team in the game.

With Coach Prime, Deion Sanders at the controls (figuratively) and stars like both-way standout [autotag]Travis Hunter[/autotag], it’s certain that many of the casual college football fans who play the game will pick Colorado.  It’s just too bad they’ll get a very wrong idea of the Buffaloes as a whole entering a season that they might just get crazy, finish .500, and make a bowl game.

For whatever its worth, Notre Dame checked in with the 17th best offense and sixth best defense.

Former Notre Dame Commit Leaves Coach Prime, Finds New Home

Former Notre Dame commitment officially finds a new home…

Notre Dame fans might be familiar with the name [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag].

Edwards was a Notre Dame commitment in the 2023 recruiting class as late as early-December of 2022, but after an offer from Deion Sanders, he flipped his commitment and eventually enrolled at Colorado.

This came after Edwards had originally committed to Kansas State, only to flip to Notre Dame.

Despite scoring four touchdowns in Colorado’s shocking Week One victory at TCU last year, Edwards only scored one the remainder of the season.  He recently announced he was entering the transfer portal and we now officially know his new home.

Which is an old one of his, sort of.

It won’t be Notre Dame for the one-time commitment but with where Notre Dame’s backfield is currently at you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in South Bend too worried about missing out.

[lawrence-related id=84718]

Coach Prime’s first full class at Colorado finished where!?!

Buzz, your girlfriend…

Just before the early signing period a year ago Notre Dame lost running back Dylan Edwards to Colorado.  Edwards shined in his first game for Colorado this year, scoring four touchdowns in Colorado’s upset of TCU back in September.

The season didn’t go as well the rest of the year for Edwards or Colorado head coach Deion Sanders as Edwards found the end zone just twice more and the Buffaloes finished the year 4-8 overall.

This year was better for Notre Dame as they didn’t have any last-minute departures from the class.  Colorado also didn’t end up pulling off flips anywhere like they did a year ago.

So with the early signing period open and the vast majority of commitments in, where did Colorado finish up in the rankings to close the first full class Deion Sanders was able to recruit?

98th on the 247Sports composite rankings.

You read that correctly.

98th.

If you’re curious, that’s exactly one spot behind Eastern Michigan and one ahead of South Alabama.

Sure Colorado landed arguably the most talent of any program through the transfer portal this off-season but its certainly not the recruiting class that Sanders and company were thinking they’d have in place.
