Browns Morning Roundup: Midges, A brutal loss, and a late night trade

From morning to late at night yesterday was jam packed with Browns news and update.

Well, the Cleveland Browns have dropped to 2-3 on the season as they take another close loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers. It was a busy, busy day from start to finish, but that almost made the pain of the loss linger.

Regardless, there is a great deal of news and content to recap from yesterday as the Browns now look forward to Week 6 against the New England Patriots in desperate need of a win. Even though this is not an easy Browns Morning Roundup to write, we power through after another tough Sunday.

Let’s dive into yesterday’s the action.

Browns strike deal with Falcons, trade for LB Deion Jones

The Browns have seen enough of their current linebackers as they made a move with the Falcons for linebacker Deion Jones

After watching Jacob Phillips struggle since the injury to Anthony Walker Jr., the Cleveland Browns have apparently seen enough. After getting gashed in back-to-back weeks, including the latest meltdown against the run against the Los Angeles Chargers, a late at night trade comes down. The Browns have made a deal with the Atlanta Falcons for linebacker Deion Jones. The Browns will only have to swap late round picks with the Falcons for this acquisition.

Jones’ best days are largely in the past, as he was just a shell of himself a year ago for the Falcons, and has yet to see the field in 2022 as he has been shelfed on the Injured Reserve in Atlanta. This is a low risk, low cost move, but the expectation that he will turn the second level around is low as well.

The Browns will be on the hook for just his $1.39 million base salary, plus an additional $31,250 per game he’s active as well per Tom Pelissero. Taking on pennies of a contract just to swap late round picks is a no risk move by general manager Andrew Berry and his team.

Infamous midges return to Cleveland for Browns vs. Chargers

The infamous midges that attacked Joba Chamberlain in the 2007 ALDS have made an appearance at FirstEnergy Stadium for Browns vs. Chargers

It appears the midges have found the wrong stadium off of Lake Erie. Just like their appearance in the 2007 ALDS, where they infamously attacked New York Yankees’ pitcher Joba Chamberlain, the midges have now found their way to FirstEnergy Stadium as the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers get set for war.

One Chargers player even told Tom Withers of the Associated Press they are “terrible” on the field. The Chargers are already beat up on the field as the Browns get healthy, but now the midges add another element of surprise to this close matchup (on paper).

Just in time for the Guardians to take on the Yankees this upcoming week, it is almost deja vu in Cleveland.

Browns announce Demetric Felton, 7 other inactives vs. Chargers

The Browns have announced eight inactives, including Demetric Felton, against the Los Angeles Chargers

As the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers get set for battle, the list of inactives has dropped. As the Browns announce eight inactives, running back/wide receiver Demetric Felton is among them. After elevating Chester Rogers from the practice squad again this week to return kicks, Felton’s role has been reduced to ashes.

Rogers can be elevated one more time from the practice squad before the Browns have to sign him to the active roster to have him dress on Sundays. One has to wonder if Felton’s roster spot could be on shaky ground in a week or two.

The other inactives listed for today’s game are quarterback Kellen Mond, wide receiver Michael Woods II, safety Richard LeCounte, offensive linemen Joe Haeg and Chris Hubbard, and tight end Miller Forristall.

Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney, Taven Bryan all back vs. Chargers

The Browns are getting all three of their missing defensive linemen back vs. Chargers

It is gameday and the Cleveland Browns will get a massive boost along their defensive trenches as all three starters who missed out a week ago with start against the Los Angeles Chargers. We knew Myles Garrett would be active earlier this week, but both questionables in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and defensive tackle Taven Bryan will return to the starting lineup today.

Going against the 30th most efficient team on the ground, a poor run defense may catch a break. The stars may just be aligning for the Browns to advance to 3-2 on the season as they could be catching the beat up Chargers at the right time.

WR Kenny Stills reacts to potential with Browns on Twitter

Wide receiver Kenny Stills was not shy about his desire to play for the Browns on Twitter

The Cleveland Browns held a ten player workout on Friday that included veteran wide receiver Kenny Stills. Stills is interesting in part because of his previous experience playing with Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The 30-year-old Stills was taken in the fifth round of the 2013 draft and is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds.

Stills played for two seasons with Watson in Houston. His best season with Watson came in 2019 when he caught 40 balls for 561 yards and for touchdowns. In 2020, he did not start any games for the Texans and caught only 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

He has only played in 23 games over the last two seasons and hasn’t accumulated much in terms of statistics, catching only 17 passes for 202 yards over that period. The workout went well but won’t result in employment with the Browns, according to Brad Stainbrook.

After his workout, Stills wasn’t shy about commenting on the idea of playing for the Browns as he posted on Twitter about potentially teaming up with Cleveland’s wide receivers when a fan was posting about wanting Stills to catch on with the Browns.

Despite his public enthusiasm it doesn’t appear that he will be wearing the orange and brown in the immediate future.

Browns elevating WR/KR Chester Rogers and LB Dakota Allen vs. Chargers

The Browns are elevating two players from the practice squad for this week’s game against the Chargers.

The Cleveland Browns are elevating a pair of players for their Week 5 showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers. The first player is wide receiver/returnman Chester Rogers, with linebacker Dakota Allen joining the active roster for this game as well.

This will be Rogers’ second elevation, meaning the Browns can elevate him one more time off of the practice squad before they have to sign him to the active roster to see him on Sundays again. Expect Rogers to take over return duties, with Allen playing a great deal of special teams (or in case of emergency should Jacob Phillips continue to struggle).

Greedy Williams not expected to play vs. Chargers despite return to practice

We will have to wait until next week to see Greedy Williams back in a Browns uniform

Despite being designated for return and practicing all week, the Cleveland Browns are not expected to activate cornerback Greedy Williams off of Injured Reserve just yet. According to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook, Williams is not expected to play as the Browns get set for battle against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Browns technically have 21 days after designating Williams for return to bring him back to the roster. With M.J. Emerson playing at a decent level, there is no need to throw Williams back out onto the field before he is 100 percent healthy and ready to return. Perhaps we see Williams make his return next week against the New England Patriots.
