Reece Davis: Georgia vs Clemson season opener might be No. 1 vs No. 2 showdown

Reece Davis said the Georgia vs Clemson season opener game might be a No. 1 vs No. 2 showdown in Charlotte.

College football fans may mot have to wait long for the season’s biggest game.

Georgia and Clemson are scheduled to open the 2021 season in Charlotte on September 4th.

With the two powerhouses expected to come into the season as title contenders, ESPN College GameDay host Reece Davis said he thinks this game might even be a No. 1 vs No. 2 showdown.

“I think (Georgia) should be in position to do it this year if they can let go of that mindset that they can’t be complete until they beat Alabama,” Davis said on the Saturday Down South Podcast. “Is it going to be less fulfilling to (Georgia) if they beat Texas A&M or if they beat somebody in the SEC Championship game and they don’t get a chance to beat Alabama and exorcise that metaphorical demon or whatever.

“I do think that’s a big deal. I think it’s been something that’s been hanging over that program a little bit, so we’ll see if they’re able to take that step forward in that regard this year. They should.

“Right now, I’m leaning a little bit to have (Georgia) preseason No. 1,” Davis added. “We might even have preseason No. 1 and No. 2 playing in Charlotte — in some order — when Clemson and Georgia play early in the season.”

How much is Georgia paying San Jose St to get out of 2021 opener?

Georgia football is set to give San Jose State a massive payout after cancelling their 2021 season opener to play Clemson instead.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Georgia Bulldogs will play the Clemson Tigers for the 2021 season opener in Charlotte.

The game was not originally on either teams’ schedules, which then begs the question; how did they fit this in?

The Bulldogs were set to play San Jose State for their season opener but worked out a deal that would relieve them from the contest.  The Dawgs will be out a hefty $1.8 million just from cancelling this game while San Jose State will be cashing in.

In the grand scheme of things, this game will make both schools way more money than if Georgia had kept their original season opener.  This matchup is a rivalry that has died out in past years but now seems to be revived.

The Dawgs and the Tigers are set to face off September 4th, 2021.  Georgia has won 6 of the past 7 matchups against the Tigers.

Both teams are tied for 27th in most games played against Power 5 opponents in the past 15 years.

This will be the first of six matchups between the two programs over the next 13 years.
