Notre Dame football just 83 days away

Under 12 weeks til kickoff!

Notre Dame football returns in 83 days as the Irish are set to open the 2023 season abroad, taking on Navy in Dublin, Ireland.

As we like to do, we’re counting things down as we get set for the long-awaited return of Notre Dame football. Will the Irish be a threat to crash the College Football Playoff party in 2023? Time will tell but with the addition of transfer quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag], expectations are high in South Bend.

With today being day 83 in the countdown it’s a proper day to look back at the Notre Dame with a couple of the best receivers the program has ever know.  Of course I’m talking about [autotag]Jeff Samardzija[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag].

Looking back, it’s easy to make a case that Samardzija was the best player on the successful 2005 and 2006 teams while Claypool fit Samardzija’s track record a bit, taking time to develop on campus but having an outstanding final two years.

Check out the best pictures of both Samardzija and Claypool during their  times at Notre Dame below!

NFL trade deadline: Bears acquire former Notre Dame star from Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent Chase Claypool on his way to Chicago for a second-round pick Tuesday.

Former Notre Dame star wide receiver [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag] is on the move shortly before the NFL trade deadline as the Pittsburgh Steelers have traded him to the Chicago Bears.  Claypool had played with the Steelers since being drafted in 2020.

Claypool has dealt with quarterback issues in Pittsburgh the last two seasons and managed to pull in 32 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown through eight games this year.  Claypool had previously managed 860 (2021) and 873 (2020) receiving yards in the two years previous.

Field Yates reports the Steelers will receive a second-round draft pick in return.

As a Bears fan I’m thrilled Claypool is headed here as he’s one of the best receivers Notre Dame has had in the last decade, but after trading star linebacker Roquan Smith for a second and fifth-round pick Monday, it feels like a significant talent drop overall for the Bears in terms of actual players, with the addition of a useful but hardly exciting fifth-rounder.

That said, the Bears wide receiver group is a disaster and Claypool brings an obvious upgrade. Former Notre Dame teammates [autotag]Cole Kmet[/autotag], [autotag]Sam Mustipher[/autotag], and [autotag]Equinimious St. Brown[/autotag] will be awaiting his arrival in Chicago as Claypool will be the fourth former Golden Domer on the Bears active roster.

Check out some of the best photos of Claypool during his time at Notre Dame below.

Watch: Claypool’s boneheaded play costs Steelers

Football is the ultimate team game but Chase Claypool seemed to only be thinking about himself late in Thursday night’s game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell behind 29-0 Thursday night against the Minnesota Vikings but staged an epic comeback that gave them a chance to potentially tie the game late.

Trailing 36-28 with 36 seconds to play, Claypool pulled in a nine-yard reception from Ben Roethlisberger on a fourth down to extend the drive. The Steelers had no timeouts and instead of hurrying to get lined up, Claypool did his regular celebratory point which wound up costing the Steelers probably another five seconds and in all likelihood another play.

Claypool had been benched by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in the first half after receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Clearly the message didn’t seem to be received by Claypool.

Football is the ultimate team game but with the contest on the line it’s clear that Claypool was only thinking about himself.  He then only made things worse by throwing a teammate under the bus after the game.

I don’t know when Claypool started acting like a space cadet but the act needs to stop.  This act on top of the the fact he has 38 more penalty yards than any other receiver in football this season speak to someone who needs to quickly get things under control.

Must See: Notre Dame in NFL – Chase Claypool’s 10th Touchdown

If it feels like it’s every week we have a post about something ridiculous Chase Claypool has done in his rookie season with the Steelers it’s because we do.

If it feels like it’s every week we have a post about something ridiculous Chase Claypool has done in his rookie season with the Steelers it’s because we do.

And we post something pretty much every week because pretty much every week he gives us another ridiculous highlight or two leave us even more impressed.

Claypool was at it again on Sunday as the Steelers improved to 10-0 on the season, remaining the only unbeaten team in the NFL with a 27-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With the game tied at three midway through the second quarter, Ben Roethlisberger threw a fade to Claypool who went out and got it for 32 yards and a score, which happened to be his tenth of the year.

Through just ten games Claypool’s ten touchdowns tie him for the 70th most in the storied history of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 10-0 start is also the best start in franchise history as Claypool and the rest of the Steelers will look to make it 11-0 on Thanksgiving night as they host their biggest rival, the Baltimore Ravens.

Notre Dame in NFL: Watch Claypool’s two touchdowns for Steelers vs. Bengals

Chase Claypool scored twice on Sunday giving him nine touchdowns already in his NFL rookie season for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chase Claypool wasted no time bursting onto the scene with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the rookie receiver from Notre Dame was an immediate part of the offense starting in Week 1.

And that high starting point has only grown as the year has gone on for the now 9-0 Steelers after Claypool scored another pair of touchdowns on Sunday in a 36-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The first came with the Steelers leading 22-7 late in the third quarter and pretty much put things out of reach.

Roughly nine minutes later in the action Claypool was found again by Ben Roethlisberger for another score to extend the lead to the eventual final score, 36-10.

Claypool’s two touchdowns give him nine total scores on the year, good for a tie for the third most in the entire NFL as he trails only Dalvin Cook and Tyreek Hill in total touchdowns scored.

Claypool helped Notre Dame win their final six games of the 2019 season and has helped Pittsburgh win their first nine games of 2020.  The last game he played was over a full calendar year ago when the Irish fell in blowout fashion at Michigan in late October.

See it – Chase Claypool’s incredible photoshop after 4 TD day

How do you celebrate a four touchdown game in your fourth NFL game? By trolling the GOAT, of course! Chase Claypool did just that…

In just his fourth career NFL game Chase Claypool had an afternoon that most players only dream of as the former Notre Dame star found the end zone four times for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their “state championship” win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

After the game Claypool took to Twitter to celebrate by sharing a photoshop for the ages for those familiar with the story lines in regards to NFL week five.

Claypool praised for @ACEsaf for the photo.

Maybe I’m crazy but I’d consider it to be a better week when you score four touchdowns than to forget what down it was at the end of a close game, Tom Brady.

Claypool now has 13 receptions for 261 yards and four touchdowns on the year while he’s also rushed for another 13 yards and a touchdown on the year.

Claypool is one of just 16 players in the NFL to have scored five touchdowns this season and compared to the majority of the league, has played one fewer game.

We said it at the time and it’s proving to be true early on – there aren’t many places a rookie receiver could wish to be drafted in terms of having NFL success than Pittsburgh.

Former Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool has gotten off to a hot start with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the first half of Sunday’s game against the Eagles was no different.

Claypool started the scoring in the week five game by recording his first career rushing touchdown on a jet sweep that was well blocked.

Claypool then put the Steelers back in front in the second quarter with a 32 yard touchdown reception from Ben Roethlisberger, the majority of those 32 yards coming after the catch.

At halftime the currently 3-0 Steelers lead the Eagles 17-14. Its Pittsburgh’s first game back after having last weeks contest against Tennessee postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

MUST WATCH – Chase Claypool’s 84 yard touchdown reception

Two weeks into his NFL career Chase Claypool continue to turn heads for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Quick – who is responsible for the longest play so far in this young NFL season?

If you guessed former Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool then you win the toaster oven!

Leading the Broncos 7-3 just past midway through the second quarter or Sunday’s game, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked to his left to find the rookie Claypool roughly 40 yards down field and Claypool pulled in the catch before letting his legs do the rest.

It’s only been two weeks but already Claypool has two ridiculous highlights in his NFL career after his first reception was one of the best catches you’ll see all season.

The touchdown gave the Steelers a 14-3 lead over Denver and as of posting, Pittsburgh leads Denver 17-3 at halftime.

Notre Dame in NFL: Chase Claypool turning heads in Steelers camp

It’s hardly a surprise to anyone who watched him since the middle of 2018, but Chase Claypool continues to impress in Steelers training camp

Anyone who watched Chase Claypool at Notre Dame saw a player that took some time to develop but for his final year and a half wearing blue and gold, was as impressive as any player on the team.

Last year saw Claypool record 66 receptions for 1037 yards and 13 touchdowns while taking home team MVP honors.  He was eventually selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and he’s been impressive so far in training camp.

Steelers tight end Eric Ebron took to Twitter to show praise to the rookie wide receiver.

NBC Sports analyst who you know from Notre Dame telecasts, Chris Simms, shared a comp for Claypool that had a fantastic NFL career, even if this guy wasn’t always the best teammate.

In nine seasons between 2007 and 2015, Brandon Marshall pulled in 1000 yards receiving all but once.  He also hauled in 77 touchdown receptions in that time.

I think it’s safe to say if Claypool turns out to have a career like Marshall, Steelers fans and Notre Dame fans will be thrilled.

Here’s to hoping if that’s the case that Claypool isn’t sitting here 13 years from now without every playing in an NFL postseason game like Marshall did.
