Notre Dame defensive line target Bryce Young ready to commit

This would be an Irish legacy.

Notre Dame legacies are one of the greatest sources of pride for the university. The football team might be about to land a big one in Bryce Young, the son of Irish legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer [autotag]Bryant Young[/autotag]. Like his father before him, the younger Young is a defensive lineman, and he will announce his college decision Saturday. While USC, Michigan and Tennessee are finalists, many project him to pick to the Irish.

The similarities between Young and fellow Irish target Micah Gilbert don’t stop with who’s seeking their services. Both are four-star 2024 recruits, and both are teammates at Charlotte Christian in North Carolina. Additionally, Gilbert also is projected to pick the Irish when he makes his own decision next week.

Here’s hoping [autotag]Al Golden[/autotag] and [autotag]Al Washington[/autotag] did enough convincing to bring Young to the Irish. We don’t think our own John Kennedy would take him picking the Trojans very well. So for his sake and everyone else’s, we need common sense to prevail.

FIW Exclusive: Interview With Notre Dame Commit Cam Williams, Part II

Hear from one of the Irish’s biggest commits once again.

Shortly after committing to Notre Dame this summer, receiver [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] spoke with our own Michael Chen. The interview largely tackled Williams’ future with the Irish and the decision he made to commit to them. If you thought that would be our only time speaking him, think again.

Williams, the top junior in Illinois according to 247Sports, graciously has taken time to speak with us once more. This time, he’s talking about what his life is like now both on the field and in the classroom. He has a couple of years before he first runs out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium, so let’s see what his life is like now. Take 10 minutes out of your day and listen:

Our thanks to Williams for speaking to us once again. He’ll have ample opportunity to prove himself with the Irish later on. For the moment, he will focus on keeping his grades strong and acting as a leader on his current team.

Notre Dame receiver commit Cam Williams thrills in season opener

Nice 2022 debut for the kid.

Notre Dame made a big score over the summer when [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag], the top junior in Illinois according to 247Sports, committed to the program. Since he’s a member of the 2024 recruiting class, we have a couple of years before we can watch him run out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium. For now, he will focus on helping Glenbard South win. That he did Friday in the first game of 2022.

Williams scored two touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing, in a 44-12 victory over East Aurora. He also made a long reception on the game’s opening possession to help set up the game’s first touchdown. While he didn’t catch everything thrown his way in part because he was covered at times, everyone got to see how high he can jump. That alone is worthy of respect from both his teammates and his opponents, and we only can imagine how much better he’ll be at it by the time he gets to South Bend.

We’ve interviewed Williams once before, but we’ll have another with him coming soon. For now, keep it here for all the news on Irish recruits and commits.

Notre Dame lands four-star 2024 receiver Cam Williams

This may or may not be a shameless plug for one of our writers’ high school.

This is a real privilege for me. My high school doesn’t have that rich of a football history, but often times, a player will have the opportunity to play at a prominent school. That’s how it is at Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. One of those opportunities has come along, and every Raider, myself included, should be proud of the fact that four-star receiver [autotag]Cam Williams [/autotag]has selected Notre Dame.

Williams, a 2024 recruit, picked the Irish over Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Cincinnati, all of which made the final cut. Our own Michael Chen has seen Williams in person and provided a good scouting report on him. Me? I’m just thrilled that someone from my old stomping grounds is taking his talents to South Bend, so forgive my celebratory mood in this post.

You all should know that I found out this news on a Facebook post from Dave Key, who is the biggest Glenbard South athletics fan who has ever lived. Nobody bleeds Raider red, white and blue like him, and he is known to attend games for any college football player who passed through the school. When Williams has his first game at Notre Dame Stadium, he needs to be there, too. So if anyone has an extra ticket for the Irish’s 2024 home opener against Northern Illinois, have a heart and give it to him.

Notre Dame Twitter reacts to C.J. Carr commitment

How did you react to the news?

We don’t know what career [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag] will have at Notre Dame. For all we know, he’ll turn out to be the biggest quarterback bust in program history. At the moment, this is terrific news for the program. Everyone is so confident in him that [autotag]Brady Quinn[/autotag] showed up during his announcement and flat-out told him to break every program record he currently has.

With such a big commitment to the Irish, it was expected that members of the fandom would take to Twitter to express their delight. Some were simply giddy, and others were analytical. Even [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag], Carr’s future offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach had to pile onto the celebration.

All anyone knows is Carr’s first game wearing the blue and gold can’t come soon enough. Yeah, we’ll have to wait a little longer for it, but good things come to those who wait, right? In the meantime, let’s see what Notre Dame Twitter hasd to say about this news:

Running back recruit will visit Notre Dame

Hope the Irish can land him.

Notre Dame never can have enough players at skill positions. That’s because you never know when you might find the next player to electrify crowds at Notre Dame Stadium. That surely is the reason the Irish staff is thrilled to see the below tweet from Tony Phillips Jr., a running back recruit from Bishop McNamara in Kankakee, Illinois:

Unless there’s something we don’t know about, Saturday stands to be a busy a day for Phillips because he already has tweeted about going to Illinois on the same day. He hasn’t tweeted about visiting the Illini since:

In March, Phillips also visited Purdue and Iowa, so it’s obvious that a lot of Big Ten programs are looking heavily at him. In January, he received offers from Massachusetts and Miami (Ohio). Those were on top of the offers he already had received from Syracuse, Tennessee and Florida Atlantic.

This kid will play somewhere with a fine reputation in college, and let’s hope it’s Notre Dame.

Notre Dame gives offer to safety recruit Peyton Woodyard

How would you like to see this guy patrolling the Irish’s secondary?

When Kyle Hamilton leaves Notre Dame, he will leave a big gap to fill in the Irish’s secondary. Even if he isn’t around for the distant future, his legacy will be felt, at least in the short term. That’s why new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman must prepare for that inevitability. To that end, he has presented an offer to Peyton Woodyard, a safety recruit out of St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California:

Woodyard only has completed his freshman season, so his potential time in South Bend wouldn’t overlap with that of Hamilton, who’s about to begin his junior year. Still, he’s getting a taste of what it’s like to play for a school with a rich athletic history, which he is at St. John Bosco with alumni like D.J. Uiagalelei and Josh Rosen. With his school’s reputation and his talent, he’s already gotten offers from programs like Florida State, Alabama, Georgia, USC, Michigan, Arizona State and Penn State. This undoubtedly is an exciting time for him.

Notre Dame offers receiver recruit Ryan Wingo

The Irish are after a speedy receiver who’s just getting started in high school.

While it would be nice to see Notre Dame improve its receiver situation from last year quickly, improvement often comes to those who wait. Tommy Rees is looking far down the road for his offense, or at least that of the Irish. As strong as the offensive line was during the 2020 season, receiver is among Notre Dame’s biggest areas of need. That’s why Rees has given an offer to Ryan Wingo, a receiver at St. Louis University High School in St. Louis with only his first year of prep football under his belt:

Like many recruits his age, Wingo only has a few offers so far. In addition to Notre Dame, he’s drawn interest from Illinois, Iowa State, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Missouri and UCF. Every program that comes after him will appreciate his speed, especially after he won four gold medals in a recent track meet for 100- and 200-meter events as well as two relay events. He’s only going to get better as he progresses through high school, and that’s a scary thought.

Notre Dame gives offer to defensive end recruit Nigel Smith

The Irish are after a young recruit to shore up their defensive line.

We’re now at the point where programs start making offers to recruits who have completed their freshman season. Notre Dame now is one of them. The Irish’s latest offer takes them to Melissa, Texas, where they are pursuing strong-side defensive end Nigel Smith:

Over the previous few minutes of making the Notre Dame offer public, Smith also announced he had received offers from North Texas and UTSA. While those programs obviously would keep him closer to home, neither Conference USA school has anything close to the history or reputation of Notre Dame. Of course, it will take more than that to convince Smith to come to South Bend.

Notre Dame already has a pair of strong-side defensive ends coming in for the 2022 season in Tyson Ford and Aiden Gobaira. They’ll also add a weak-side defensive end in Darren Agu. Here’s hoping they will be good mentors for Smith by the time he arrives if that’s indeed what happens.
