FIW Exclusive: Interview with Notre Dame commit Cam Williams, Part III

Hear from one of Notre Dame’s top 2024 commits.

[autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] is a four-star receiver commit in Notre Dame’s 2024 recruiting class. He is the state of Illinois’ second-best recruit in that class according to 247Sports. He also happens to attend Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn, my alma mater. To say the least, it’s been great to have him represent the same school community I once did as a student and continue to do as an alumnus.

I had the opportunity to see him play his most recent game, and he scored two touchdowns. One of them came on this 62-yard run that I captured myself from the top of the bleachers. This run is a perfect indication that he once was a running back:

I had a chance to speak with Williams after the game, making this the third time he has spoken with this site. I did it once last year, and our own Michael Chen did the other interview not long before. Here’s what what he to say:

FIW Exclusive: Interview With Notre Dame Commit Cam Williams, Part II

Hear from one of the Irish’s biggest commits once again.

Shortly after committing to Notre Dame this summer, receiver [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] spoke with our own Michael Chen. The interview largely tackled Williams’ future with the Irish and the decision he made to commit to them. If you thought that would be our only time speaking him, think again.

Williams, the top junior in Illinois according to 247Sports, graciously has taken time to speak with us once more. This time, he’s talking about what his life is like now both on the field and in the classroom. He has a couple of years before he first runs out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium, so let’s see what his life is like now. Take 10 minutes out of your day and listen:

Our thanks to Williams for speaking to us once again. He’ll have ample opportunity to prove himself with the Irish later on. For the moment, he will focus on keeping his grades strong and acting as a leader on his current team.

Notre Dame lands four-star 2024 receiver Cam Williams

This may or may not be a shameless plug for one of our writers’ high school.

This is a real privilege for me. My high school doesn’t have that rich of a football history, but often times, a player will have the opportunity to play at a prominent school. That’s how it is at Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. One of those opportunities has come along, and every Raider, myself included, should be proud of the fact that four-star receiver [autotag]Cam Williams [/autotag]has selected Notre Dame.

Williams, a 2024 recruit, picked the Irish over Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Cincinnati, all of which made the final cut. Our own Michael Chen has seen Williams in person and provided a good scouting report on him. Me? I’m just thrilled that someone from my old stomping grounds is taking his talents to South Bend, so forgive my celebratory mood in this post.

You all should know that I found out this news on a Facebook post from Dave Key, who is the biggest Glenbard South athletics fan who has ever lived. Nobody bleeds Raider red, white and blue like him, and he is known to attend games for any college football player who passed through the school. When Williams has his first game at Notre Dame Stadium, he needs to be there, too. So if anyone has an extra ticket for the Irish’s 2024 home opener against Northern Illinois, have a heart and give it to him.

Running back recruit Gi’Bran Payne commits to Notre Dame

Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.

For the past month-and-a-half, our Michael Chen has been keeping tabs on Gi’Bran Payne, a running back recruit based in Cincinnati. Earlier this week, Payne set Good Friday as the day he would announce his decision. True to his word, he did just that, and it’s good news for Irish fans:

Notre Dame’s gain is a loss for Indiana, with which Payne previously had signed a letter of intent before asking for and being granted his release. Not so coincidental is that Marcus Freeman hired Hoosiers Deland McCullough to the same position after losing Lance Taylor to Louisville.

As for whether the Irish needed another running back in their 2022 recruiting class, Irish beat writer Pete Sampson of The Athletic offered this:

“With Payne on board, Notre Dame should have five scholarship running backs on the roster this fall with Chris Tyree, Logan Diggs, Audric Estime and Jadarian Price. A year from now, that number could grow to seven after adding Class of 2023 commitment and top target Jayden Limar, who plans to visit for the Blue-Gold Game next weekend.

Would Notre Dame really carry seven scholarship running backs at one time? Probably not, which might be a tell of future roster turnover. There’s nothing wrong with letting a group of four-star prospects fight it out for carries, then wishing those at the bottom of the depth chart well if they’re looking for a bigger opportunity.”

Hey, if running back becomes as powerful a position for Notre Dame as tight end, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Time for Notre Dame season opener vs. Cal State Northridge set

The one where multiple events clash on one day.

We now know when exactly Notre Dame’s 2021-22 season begins. The season opener, which will take place against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 13 at Purcell Pavilion, is set to tip off at noon EST. The broadcast will be shown exclusively online on ACC Network Extra. Cable subscribers with access to the ACC Network can watch it on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.

This game’s scheduled start time is interesting for a couple of reasons. Most notably, the football team is scheduled to play at Virginia on the same day, but we won’t know the start time or network it will be on until the coming weekend’s action is complete. If the football game ends up getting a noon kickoff, it’s hard to believe any Notre Dame supporter other than the basketball diehards will watch this first game of the season. Yeah, it’s all stupid, but ESPN has its own way of doing things.

The other reason this game’s start time is notable is more on a personal level. By the time this contest is over, I will be in the middle of getting married. So I guess I should take this opportunity to say I obviously won’t be covering the football game that day. However, Nick Shepkowski and Mike Chen are fantastic colleagues, and I know they’ll be able to hold the fort down without me.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Drake London

Don’t even think about the Irish having the upper hand here.

The leading receiver battle between Notre Dame and USC couldn’t be more lopsided. It didn’t help that Michael Mayer was held out with an injury in the last game at Virginia Tech. Even if that didn’t happen, Mayer would have done little to close the gap in this matchup. Part of it comes from him being a tight end, but mostly, it simply comes from not having the talent of a receiver that NFL scouts are watching heavily.

The Trojans’ receiver in question is Drake London, and he’s blowing away everyone in college football. As Michael Chen wrote, he’s second in the country in receiving yards a game and fourth in total receiving yards. Perhaps the best thing to watch for in terms of competitiveness will be if London and fellow NFL prospect Kyle Hamilton go toe-to-toe on a 50-50 pass from Kedon Slovis. That would be a play everyone would want to see.

Some Personal Thoughts as We Begin Celebrating Christmas

There’s no doubt about it: 2020 has been hard on all of us. Whether big or small, COVID-19 is a real presence in our lives.

There’s no doubt about it: 2020 has been hard on all of us. Whether big or small, COVID-19 is a real presence in our lives. Even with two vaccines slowly beginning to be rolled out, they’ve come too late to prevent many of us from spending Christmas away from our loved ones. It’s one more loss in a year that’s taken so many things away from us.

I was no exception to any of this. On Easter, I lost my 95-year-old grandmother, the wife of a proud Notre Dame alumnus whose ties to the university are why I embrace the gold and blue. Over the summer, the uncertainty caused by the virus led my fiancee and I to postpone our Nov. 7 wedding and our life together by a year, though that allowed me to cover an Irish upset of Clemson that ranks near the top of games in the program’s history. On Oct. 14, we had to mourn the sudden death of my fiancee’s father who, despite being an avowed Notre Dame hater and loyalist to Nick Saban and Alabama, gave me his blessing to propose to his daughter the year before.

But through all of that and much more, I had Fighting Irish Wire to come back to, and it’s a community I’ve been proud to be a part of. I want to thank Nick Shepkowski for bringing me aboard a year ago and running this site as smoothly and professionally as possible. I also want to thank Michael Chen and Jeff Feyerer for writing with such quality that I’ve been encouraged to raise my own game. Special thanks also goes to Patrick Sturgeon, our managing editor, for his leadership and always giving us guidance to make this a site with content to rival that of more prominent outlets in sports journalism.

Most of all, I want to thank the readers for coming back here, trusting us and spreading the word about us. You make it worth the time we spend to inform you of all things Notre Dame. We always wonder what it is we’ll write next that resonates with a lot of people. Because of you, we’ve had pieces make rounds all over the internet, and that gives us great pride and gratification.

Wherever you are, stay safe as we celebrate a holiday season none of us has experienced before. We want 2021 to be a year in which you continue to come back here. More importantly, we want it to be a year in which we’re able to keep doing things we love and get back at least some of what we had in 2019. Until then, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Notre Dame/South Florida Game Predictions

Can Notre Dame do something they’ve only done 12 times the last 30 years? We’ll find out Saturday

When Notre Dame welcomes South Florida to South Bend on Saturday the Irish will be looking to do something for the third year in a row but for what would be just the 12th time in the last 30 seasons.

That is start the year 2-0.

Under Brian Kelly, Notre Dame has done exactly that five of his ten years, including the last two seasons.  From 1990-2009 however the Irish did that just seven times in those 20 seasons under the watch of Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham, Bob Davie and Lou Holtz.

It’s not the most difficult of opponents coming to Notre Dame Stadium but then again, we said that in September of 2011 when South Florida visited, too.

So what happens this weekend?  Here’s what the staff at Fighting Irish Wire thinks headed into the game weekend:

First up Geoffrey Clark (1-0)
