Instant Analysis: LSU softball avoids sweep with Game 3 win over Missouri

The Tigers avoided a disastrous weekend with a win on Sunday to avoid a sweep.

The weekend didn’t go to plan for the LSU softball team on its trip to Missouri, but it avoided a series sweep in Columbia on Sunday with a tight 4-3 win in Game 3.

LSU got the scoring started in the first inning when [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] tripled and then made it home on a wild pitch. But that lead wouldn’t last long as Missouri answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

Briggs would tie the game with an RBI single in the third, but Mizzou seized the lead back after scoring on an error in the bottom of the frame.

LSU caught a big break in the sixth when a [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] single ultimately scored two runs after a throwing error.

The Tigers got through the sixth in order, and while they got in some trouble in the seventh with three runners reaching base in the inning, [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] — who pitched the final 5.1 innings — escaped a jam as the Tigers secured the win.

LSU will return to the field on Tuesday when it travels to face Nicholls in a midweek matchup before hosting Texas A&M in Baton Rouge next weekend.

Instant Analysis: Still-undefeated LSU softball hands Ole Miss a shutout in series opener

LSU remains the lone unbeaten team in Division I with a 3-0 win on Saturday.

While the bats were a bit cold in Saturday’s series opener against Ole Miss, the pitching came through for the LSU softball team at Tiger Park.

The Tigers won 3-0 thanks to a complete game shutout from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag], who gave up just two hits, and now they’re 24-0 and one win away from tying the best start in program history.

LSU stole a run early in this game when a fielding error in the bottom of the first netted a run, but the game remained at a one-run margin until the sixth inning.

[autotag]Sierra Daniel[/autotag] gave the Tigers some insurance with a sacrifice groundout, and they scored a third run on a [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] single.

Lynch allowed one of her two hits in the seventh inning, but a double-play ended the game as the Tigers kept their perfect record intact.

They’ll look to keep it that way as they go for a series-clinching win over the Rebels on Sunday at 4:30 CT.

Instant Analysis: LSU softball remains nation’s lone unbeaten team after top-3 win over Texas

LSU passed its toughest test of the season so far on Tuesday afternoon.

The LSU softball team continued its streak of success in its toughest matchup of the season so far on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 Tigers — the last remaining unbeaten team at the Division I level — welcomed No. 3 Texas to Tiger Park on Tuesday and walked away with a 7-4 win to remain undefeated on the season.

LSU jumped out to a commanding lead, scoring five runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI double from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] followed by a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a three-RBI double from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag].

The Tigers added another run in the second with an RBI single from [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag], but Texas wouldn’t go away. It added a trio of runs in the third and another in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4.

However, LSU got some insurance at the bottom of the fourth with a [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] sac-fly, and [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] didn’t allow any more runs as she pitched a complete game and moved to 9-0 on the season after earning the win.

LSU softball surges past San Diego State to take Friday doubleheader

After a close call in Friday’s first game, the second half was much smoother sailing for the Tigers.

After a close call against Illinois in the first half of Friday’s doubleheader at the Purple & Gold Invitational, the Tigers had much smoother sailing in the second leg as it breezed to a 9-1 win over San Diego State in six innings.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run in the process of striking out nine.

That run came in the top of the first when the Aztecs hit a two-out homer, but that was all they’d get off Berzon. LSU scored four runs in the third inning thanks to homers from [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] as well as an RBI triple from [autotag]Danieca Coffey[/autotag].

The Tigers would then combine for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get to the run-rule margin, headlined by a two-RBI double from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] in the final frame.

LSU will be back in action for another doubleheader on Saturday against San Diego State and McNeese as it looks to remain unbeaten.

LSU softball opens the season with a 5-0 weekend, all shutouts

The Tigers didn’t allow a run this weekend, and three of their five shutout wins came by run-rule.

You really couldn’t ask for a better start to the season than coach Beth Torina’s LSU softball team did this weekend. The No. 15 Tigers began the season 5-0, all of which were shutouts and three of which came in run-rule fashion.

On Saturday, they finished up a double-header with an 8-0 victory over Memphis in five innings, with [autotag]Emilee Cassanova[/autotag] pitching a complete game while giving up just two hits and striking out five.

With one out in the bottom of the first, LSU got going quickly. [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] had a two-run single, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] added a third run with a sacrifice groundout.

The rest of the action came in the third. [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Sierra Daniel[/autotag] hit back-to-back RBI singles, while two more runs scored on bases-loaded walks to [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and a hit-by-pitch to [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag].

LSU will now head to Florida next weekend for the Clearwater Invitational, where it will face Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Washington and Minnesota.

LSU softball picked to finish 3rd in SEC, four named to preseason all-conference team

The Tigers are looking for some redemption after a regional exit as a hosting national seed in 2023.

The bat-and-ball season is right around the corner, and LSU softball is looking for some redemption after a regional exit as a hosting national seed in 2023.

The Tigers enter the 2024 season with a veteran team and coach in [autotag]Beth Torina[/autotag], who has been in her role since 2012. The team is expected to be one of the best in the league, and the media picked LSU to finish third behind only Tennessee and Georgia, which each received six first-place votes, while LSU didn’t receive any.

The media is also high on several LSU players as four overall were named to the preseason All-SEC squad: [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag], [autotag]Danieca Coffey[/autotag] and [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag].

LSU will begin its 2024 campaign on Thursday, Feb. 8, when it hosts Nicholls at Tiger Park.

Four LSU Softball players make D1Softball’s Top 100 Rankings

Taylor Pleasants, Sydney Berzon, Ciara Briggs and Daneica Coffey are the four Tigers who made the top 100 list.

D1Softball has released a list of who they think are the Top 100 players in the country as we head into the 2024 season. Four Tigers have made the list and two of them are inside the top 25.

[autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag], [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag], and [autotag]Daneica Coffey[/autotag] are the four who made the top 100 list. Those four were instrumental in leading LSU to a 42-17 record last season and a chance to host their own regional.

The season did not end as planned as the Tigers lost back-to-back games against UL-Lafayette in the Baton Rouge Regional to end their season. LSU Softball starts the 2024 season on Feb. 8 against Nicholls at Tiger Park.

Coming off a disappointing postseason exit in 2023, LSU softball and 13th-year coach [autotag]Beth Torina[/autotag] will return to the field next month to begin a 2024 season that features fairly high expectations.

The preseason polls reflect that. In the Softball America rankings entering the season, LSU ranks No. 12. The Tigers return 18 letter winners in 2024, six of which were All-SEC selections a year ago.

They also return an All-American pitcher in [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] and the two-time reigning Gold Glove winner in [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag].

LSU finished the 2023 season 42-17, earning the No. 10 national seed while hosting a regional in Baton Rouge. After winning the first two matchups at the regional, it dropped two in a row to Louisiana in the regional final, ending its season.

The Tigers will begin the season at home against Nicholls on Feb. 8 as they look to reach the super regionals for the first time since 2021 and the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2017.

LSU softball’s Ciara Briggs wins back-to-back Gold Gloves

LSU’s Ciara Briggs defense earned her recognition for the second straight year.

LSU softball center fielder [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] added to her resume this week with a second consecutive Golden Glove.

The award is given annually by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

In addition to winning the Gold Glove, Briggs is also likely to make back-to-back all-defensive teams. Briggs moved to center field last year after beginning her career as a left fielder in 2021, a season where made the All-SEC Newcomer team.

At the plate, Briggs has totaled 218 career hits in Baton Rouge while scoring 150 runs. She’s appeared in nearly 200 games for Beth Torina’s squad.

Her defense got her on SportsCenter’s top 10 in 2022 when she tumbled over a wall to make the catch.

Earlier this year, she laid out in left-center to make a spectacular diving catch that clinched a win for LSU.

Briggs will have another year of eligibility left should she choose to use it. LSU will lose some significant pieces so getting their star center fielder back would be a huge boost.

6-run rally not enough as LSU softball eliminated from Baton Rouge Regional by Louisiana

The Tigers season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night.

An impressive rally from an early six-run deficit wasn’t enough for the Tigers to keep their season alive on Sunday night. LSU was eliminated from the Baton Rouge Regional with a 9-8 loss to Louisiana, which advances to its first super regional since 2016.

Coach Beth Torina’s team has now missed the super regional round in back-to-back seasons after previously reaching six in a row.

The game started out about as bad as it possibly could have for LSU. After a leadoff single, what should have been a fielder’s choice turned into an error as the Ragin’ Cajuns had runners at the corners.

A wild pitch from [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] allowed a run to score, still with no outs on the board. Berzon then loaded up the bases after issuing back-to-back walks. She got an out on a sacrifice groundout, but a run scored to make the game 2-0.

Another walk reloaded the bases, and then things went from bad to worse as Berzon gave up a grand slam to make it 6-0, still in the first inning. That was all that UL was able to get, but LSU found itself in quite a hole before even coming to the plate.

[autotag]Georgia Clark[/autotag] managed to get one of those runs back, leading off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. LSU was then able to get a rally going in the third.

[autotag]Savannah Stewart[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] reached on errors, and a single from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] brought a run home. Clark followed up with a single to score two more after a Louisiana pitching change.

UL walked [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag], and a hard-hit double into the gap from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] scored two more runs and tied the game at six. That forced a pitching change, but even that couldn’t preserve the lead.

[autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] hit an RBI single, and the Tigers took a 7-6 advantage. A flyout ended the frame, but the damage was done. At least, for a time.

The Tigers kept the run going in the fourth after a two-out double from Briggs, and Pleasants followed with an RBI single. Louisiana wasn’t going away, though.

Karly Heath hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one run, and a single put the tying run aboard. Berzon worked her way out of trouble, though, as the freshman got a groundout to end the threat.

The 8-7 score carried into the top of the seventh with Berzon looking to close things out. She put herself in danger again early on, allowing back-to-back singles. A sacrifice groundout got her a third of the way there, but it also put the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Disaster struck after that. An intentional walk from Berzon veered into the strike zone. Newland wasn’t ready for it behind the plate, and the Ragin’ Cajuns tied the game on a passed ball.

The tie wouldn’t last long. A deep single in the next at-bat scored the go-ahead run. Suddenly, LSU came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh three outs from elimination.

A two-out single from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] gave the team life and brought the winning run to the plate, but a flyout in foul territory from Stewart ended the game and LSU’s season.

The Tigers finish the year at 42-17.
