LSU softball ends SEC play with 4-straight series losses after Game 2 loss to Arkansas

The Tigers will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday.

The LSU softball team has spent most of the season ranked in the top 10, but it’s going to enter the postseason without much momentum.

The Tigers lost 4-1 in Game 2 on Saturday at home to Arkansas, dropping their fourth-straight SEC series to close out conference regular season play.

After a quiet first inning, the teams each added a run in the second inning as Arkansas hit an RBI double in the top of the frame and LSU scored on a wild pitch following a pair of singles in the bottom of it.

The third, however, is when things fell apart for [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] on the mound. She walked four batters in the frame, two of which came with the bases loaded. She then gave up an RBI single as LSU fell behind 4-1, and she was pulled from the game in favor of [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag].

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers needed quite a bit of magic. Things didn’t get off to a great start with two outs, but after a walk and a single, the tying run came to the plate.

With the series hanging on Ali Newland’s shoulders, she made contact and sent a ball deep, but it wasn’t deep enough as the Razorbacks averted disaster and clinched the series.

The Tigers will look to avoid a sweep in Game 3 on Sunday in the final conference game of the regular season before it hosts Liberty next weekend when it hosts Liberty to close out the regular season overall.

LSU softball evens series with No. 4 Tennessee in Game 2 shutout win

After they were shut out in Game 1, the Tigers returned the favor on Saturday.

After a frustrating loss in Game 1 against the Tennessee Volunteers in which it was shut out, the LSU softball team returned the favor in Saturday’s Game 2.

[autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] pitched a complete game without allowing any runs to cross as the Tigers held on for a slim 1-0 win to even the series against the No. 4 Vols.

It was another low-scoring game early on, and neither side added a run until the fourth inning. That came courtesy of LSU’s [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag], who hit a solo shot to give her team a 1-0 lead, though that was all the Tigers managed in the frame.

Tennessee struggled to answer, though. It stranded two runners in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Lynch allowed a single in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it as she finished the game allowing just four hits with no runs while striking out six batters.

The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday as they look to take the series on the road in Game 3, which starts at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU softball pulls away late to take Game 2 and the series against Texas A&M

The Tigers won the series with two-straight comeback wins.

It looked like the Tigers were heading for another low-scoring pitching duel in Friday night’s Game 2 against Texas A&M, but LSU softball’s bats exploded to combine for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings as it surged to a series-clinching 5-1 win.

After walking a pair of batters in the first inning, [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] gave up an RBI single as Texas A&M took an early 1-0 lead. However, like in Game 1, there wasn’t much offense during the middle part of the game.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth when Thursday night’s hero [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] hit an RBI double to even the game up at one run apiece.

In the sixth, the Aggies walked a pair of batters and allowed a single, and LSU managed to take the lead after an RBI groundout and a wild pitch brought home a pair of runs. Texas A&M went on to walk two more runs home in the frame as it found itself suddenly in quite a hole to climb out of with just three outs to spare.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], who entered for Lynch in the sixth, found herself in a bit of a jam in the final frame, allowing two runners to reach with one out to go. But she struck out Aggies batting leader Allie Enright to complete the comeback.

The Tigers will face Texas A&M in Game 3 on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT as they go for the series sweep.

Instant Analysis: LSU softball avoids sweep with Game 3 win over Missouri

The Tigers avoided a disastrous weekend with a win on Sunday to avoid a sweep.

The weekend didn’t go to plan for the LSU softball team on its trip to Missouri, but it avoided a series sweep in Columbia on Sunday with a tight 4-3 win in Game 3.

LSU got the scoring started in the first inning when [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] tripled and then made it home on a wild pitch. But that lead wouldn’t last long as Missouri answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

Briggs would tie the game with an RBI single in the third, but Mizzou seized the lead back after scoring on an error in the bottom of the frame.

LSU caught a big break in the sixth when a [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] single ultimately scored two runs after a throwing error.

The Tigers got through the sixth in order, and while they got in some trouble in the seventh with three runners reaching base in the inning, [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] — who pitched the final 5.1 innings — escaped a jam as the Tigers secured the win.

LSU will return to the field on Tuesday when it travels to face Nicholls in a midweek matchup before hosting Texas A&M in Baton Rouge next weekend.

Instant Analysis: LSU softball drops series to Ole Miss with blowout loss on Monday night

The Tigers entered the weekend as the nation’s lone unbeaten, but now they’ll have to bounce back from a series loss.

LSU was riding high coming into this weekend’s home-opening SEC series against Ole Miss after earning a sweep to begin SEC play last weekend.

The Tigers were 23-0 on the year and took Game 1 against the Rebels, but Games 2 and 3 went south. With a blowout 9-2 loss on Monday night, they dropped their first SEC series of the season and fell to 24-2 (4-2 SEC) on the year.

It was Ole Miss’ first series win in Baton Rouge since 2008.

Starting pitcher [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] looked like she was going to get through the first two innings without allowing any damage, but with two outs in the second, she gave up a run of five straight singles.

Three runs scored, and Chaffin was yanked from the game in favor of [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag]. After getting out of the second, Lynch gave up a solo shot in the third as Ole Miss jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

LSU would cut that deficit in half as [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] hit a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the frame, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

However, LSU got into trouble again in the fifth when Lynch loaded up the bases. She allowed a run to score on a fielder’s choice, and after a walk reloaded the bases, a single scored another run.

The Tigers pulled her for [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], who immediately gave up a two-RBI single as Ole Miss stretched its lead to 8-2. In the sixth, it added another run off a single.

LSU couldn’t get a rally going in the seventh as it went down in order.

The Tigers will have some time off to lick their wounds before returning to the field next weekend for another road SEC series against Missouri.

Instant Analysis: Ole Miss hands LSU softball first loss of the season on Sunday

LSU’s perfect start to the season came to an end on Sunday.

It’s been a magical start to the season for LSU softball, but its perfect start came to an end on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Ole Miss. The Tigers fall to 24-1 on the year with the defeat.

LSU got the scoring started in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] that scored [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag], but that was all it managed in the frame.

In the bottom of the fourth, Petty paid it forward with a sac-fly that scored [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

Things were going well for LSU and particularly pitcher [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], but with two outs in the top of the sixth, Berzon gave up a pair of RBI singles as the Rebels managed to tie the game.

Things got even worse for Berzon in the seventh as she allowed a single, and another runner reached on a fielding error. After another ball couldn’t be fielded cleanly and the ensuing throw was off, Ole Miss managed to take the lead.

The Rebels then blew the game wide open with a single that plated two more runs and gave them a 5-2 lead.

LSU put two on in the bottom of the seventh, but with two outs and the tying run at the plate, [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] hit into a game-ending groundout.

Berzon takes the loss having pitched a complete game while allowing six hits and five runs, only two of which were earned. Now, the Tigers will try to rally back to take the series on Monday in Game 3, which is set for 6 p.m. CT at Tiger Park.

Instant Analysis: Still-undefeated LSU softball hands Ole Miss a shutout in series opener

LSU remains the lone unbeaten team in Division I with a 3-0 win on Saturday.

While the bats were a bit cold in Saturday’s series opener against Ole Miss, the pitching came through for the LSU softball team at Tiger Park.

The Tigers won 3-0 thanks to a complete game shutout from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag], who gave up just two hits, and now they’re 24-0 and one win away from tying the best start in program history.

LSU stole a run early in this game when a fielding error in the bottom of the first netted a run, but the game remained at a one-run margin until the sixth inning.

[autotag]Sierra Daniel[/autotag] gave the Tigers some insurance with a sacrifice groundout, and they scored a third run on a [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] single.

Lynch allowed one of her two hits in the seventh inning, but a double-play ended the game as the Tigers kept their perfect record intact.

They’ll look to keep it that way as they go for a series-clinching win over the Rebels on Sunday at 4:30 CT.

Instant Analysis: LSU softball remains nation’s lone unbeaten team after top-3 win over Texas

LSU passed its toughest test of the season so far on Tuesday afternoon.

The LSU softball team continued its streak of success in its toughest matchup of the season so far on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 Tigers — the last remaining unbeaten team at the Division I level — welcomed No. 3 Texas to Tiger Park on Tuesday and walked away with a 7-4 win to remain undefeated on the season.

LSU jumped out to a commanding lead, scoring five runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI double from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] followed by a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a three-RBI double from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag].

The Tigers added another run in the second with an RBI single from [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag], but Texas wouldn’t go away. It added a trio of runs in the third and another in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4.

However, LSU got some insurance at the bottom of the fourth with a [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] sac-fly, and [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] didn’t allow any more runs as she pitched a complete game and moved to 9-0 on the season after earning the win.

LSU will look to remain undefeated on the year as it welcomes Ole Miss to town for its home-opening SEC series this weekend.

Instant Analysis: LSU softball, nation’s last unbeaten team, competes sweep over Kentucky in SEC opening weekend

LSU moves to 21-0 on the season after getting a road sweep against the Wildcats this weekend to open SEC play.

The LSU softball team entered the first weekend of SEC as the last undefeated squad in Division I. Following a road trip to Lexington against a ranked Kentucky team, things are staying that way.

The Tigers completed a sweep against the Wildcats with an 8-3 win in Game 3 on Sunday, moving to 21-0 on the year one with the first SEC series in the books.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, LSU struck first with a pair of RBI singles in the third from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] and [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] to take a 2-0 lead.

Kentucky tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth that chased starter [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] from the game, but LSU would break things wide open in the sixth inning. An [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] double scored a pair of runs, and the Tigers would add another on a bases-loaded walk.

UK opted for a pitching change, but that wouldn’t fix things. Redoutey hit a sac-fly, and [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] added RBI singles to put up a six-spot in the inning.

Kentucky hit a one-run homer in the bottom of the frame but still faced a wide gap entering the final inning. It managed a pair of base hits in that frame, but it didn’t amount to any runs.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] entered the game in the fourth and ultimately pitched the last 3.1, allowing five hits but just one earned run while striking out four.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday night for a midweek game against Texas before hosting Ole Miss next weekend for the home opener conference series.

Instant Analysis: Ali Newland’s 7th-inning heroics lift LSU softball to series win over Kentucky

LSU moves to 21-0 and remains the last unbeaten softball team in Division I.

The LSU softball team found itself in another dogfight in Saturday’s Game 2 against Kentucky, but some more late-game magic allowed the Tigers to remain unbeaten on the season with a series-clinching 4-3 win.

LSU got going early on offense, with [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] both hitting RBI singles to give it a 2-0 lead. Kentucky would answer, however, with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Wildcats would later tie it in the third with a homer off [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag]. The game then remained deadlocked until the sixth inning, when [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] hit an RBI single to retake the lead, but that wouldn’t last long.

Lynch allowed a double to lead off the bottom of the frame, and a throwing error allowed an unearned run to cross and tie the game once again.

Newland gave the Tigers another lead, however, in the form of an RBI single in the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] allowed a walk, but there were no other incidents as she closed things out.

LSU, now 21-0 on the season, will be back in action on Sunday as it looks for a sweep. Game 3 in Lexington is set for 11 a.m. CT.
