LSU softball drops series to Florida after Game 3 loss in extras

The Tigers had their chances but made too many crucial errors to win.

The Tigers had the chance to secure a huge series win on the road Monday night, but they fell short in an error-filled Game 3 that went to eight innings as Florida walked it off to win 6-5.

The only run in the first four innings came off an LSU mistake when it struck out a Gators batter with two outs who then reached first on a throwing error to score a run.

After most of the game was quiet, [autotag]Maddox McKee[/autotag] evened things up with an RBI single in the fifth, and in the next at-bat, a two-run homer from [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] gave LSU a 3-1 lead. [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] added a two-run double in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1, and things were looking good.

But the Gators stormed back in the bottom of the frame. They got one run off another LSU error, and a triple ultimately cleaned up the basepaths, bringing three runners home to tie the game.

The game ultimately went to extras and with two outs, [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] struck out Skylar Wallace in the bottom of the eighth. But once again, she was able to reach on a throwing error, and this time, it was a game-ending mistake.

After a frustrating series loss, LSU returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night before Auburn comes to town for a weekend series beginning on Friday night.

LSU softball takes Game 2 in extras, evens series with Florida

LSU overcame a late deficit to tie the series against the Gators, setting up a Monday night rubber match.

LSU softball had to come from behind and play an extra frame, but it did just enough to earn a 4-3 win on the road against Florida in Game 2 to even up the series heading into a decisive Game 3 on Monday night.

In another low-scoring game, LSU struck first with a pair of RBI doubles in the second and third innings from [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Raeleen Guiterrez[/autotag], respectively. The Gators then retook the lead, adding runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the Tigers went to the top of the seventh in a do-or-die situation.

With two outs, Gutierrez came through again with another RBI double that tied the game, and [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] ultimately retired the side in order as we went to the eighth inning.

[autotag]Maddox McKee[/autotag] gave LSU the lead with a sac fly, and though that was all it managed, Berzon struck out three batters in a row in the bottom of the inning after giving up a leadoff single.

Now, the Tigers will look to secure a series win over a top-10 opponent on the road in Game 3, which is set for 6 p.m. CT on Monday night.

LSU softball pulls away late to complete sweep over Texas A&M

LSU earns a much-needed sweep over a top-15 opponent.

In all three games this weekend, the LSU softball team had to mount a late comeback. But for the third time, the Tigers emerged unscathed in Saturday’s Game 3 as a huge sixth inning led to a 9-3 win over Texas A&M as coach Beth Torina’s team completed a much-needed weekend sweep against a top-15 team.

After two quiet innings, the Aggies quickly loaded the bases with just one out in the third. [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] almost got out of the jam, but she allowed a triple that brought three runs home and gave Texas A&M the early lead.

After hitting the next batter, she was quickly taken out of the game. LSU was able to take a chunk out of that lead in the third, though, as a two-RBI single from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] cut the Aggies lead to just a run.

LSU ultimately entered the bottom of the sixth still trailing and with quite a bit of ground to make up. It did just that, leading off the frame with three straight singles including one from [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] that drove in a game-tying run.

The Tigers weren’t done, though. Texas A&M loaded up the bases, and Ali Newland came through with a grand slam to seize control of the game instantaneously.

LSU would add two more insurance runs to really put things out of reach as it capitalized on a fielding error and a bases-loaded walk.

The Tigers will return to the field at home on Tuesday night for a game against ULM before it hits the road for a top-10 matchup against Florida.

The LSU softball team entered the first weekend of SEC as the last undefeated squad in Division I. Following a road trip to Lexington against a ranked Kentucky team, things are staying that way.

The Tigers completed a sweep against the Wildcats with an 8-3 win in Game 3 on Sunday, moving to 21-0 on the year one with the first SEC series in the books.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, LSU struck first with a pair of RBI singles in the third from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] and [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] to take a 2-0 lead.

Kentucky tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth that chased starter [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] from the game, but LSU would break things wide open in the sixth inning. An [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] double scored a pair of runs, and the Tigers would add another on a bases-loaded walk.

UK opted for a pitching change, but that wouldn’t fix things. Redoutey hit a sac-fly, and [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] added RBI singles to put up a six-spot in the inning.

Kentucky hit a one-run homer in the bottom of the frame but still faced a wide gap entering the final inning. It managed a pair of base hits in that frame, but it didn’t amount to any runs.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] entered the game in the fourth and ultimately pitched the last 3.1, allowing five hits but just one earned run while striking out four.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday night for a midweek game against Texas before hosting Ole Miss next weekend for the home opener conference series.

The LSU softball team found itself in another dogfight in Saturday’s Game 2 against Kentucky, but some more late-game magic allowed the Tigers to remain unbeaten on the season with a series-clinching 4-3 win.

LSU got going early on offense, with [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] both hitting RBI singles to give it a 2-0 lead. Kentucky would answer, however, with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Wildcats would later tie it in the third with a homer off [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag]. The game then remained deadlocked until the sixth inning, when [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] hit an RBI single to retake the lead, but that wouldn’t last long.

Lynch allowed a double to lead off the bottom of the frame, and a throwing error allowed an unearned run to cross and tie the game once again.

Newland gave the Tigers another lead, however, in the form of an RBI single in the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] allowed a walk, but there were no other incidents as she closed things out.

LSU, now 21-0 on the season, will be back in action on Sunday as it looks for a sweep. Game 3 in Lexington is set for 11 a.m. CT.

LSU softball remains unbeaten after taking Sunday doubleheader

The Tigers are 19-0 as they prepare for SEC play, which begins next weekend.

LSU softball’s hot start to the 2024 season continued over the weekend, moving to 19-0 after it capped things off with a Sunday doubleheader that featured a 2-1 win over McNeese and a 2-0 win over Louisiana Tech.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] was the star of the first game against the Cowgirls, as she tossed a complete game and allowed just one run, which came in the fifth and broke a 0-0 tie. LSU answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBI singles that gave it the decisive 2-1 lead.

In Game 2, it was a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single, which resulted in the Tigers’ only runs of the game. [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] pitched a complete game shutout.

With the weekend series in the books, SEC play is now set to begin for the Tigers. First up will be a road series against Kentucky beginning on Friday.

LSU softball surges past San Diego State to take Friday doubleheader

After a close call in Friday’s first game, the second half was much smoother sailing for the Tigers.

After a close call against Illinois in the first half of Friday’s doubleheader at the Purple & Gold Invitational, the Tigers had much smoother sailing in the second leg as it breezed to a 9-1 win over San Diego State in six innings.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run in the process of striking out nine.

That run came in the top of the first when the Aztecs hit a two-out homer, but that was all they’d get off Berzon. LSU scored four runs in the third inning thanks to homers from [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] as well as an RBI triple from [autotag]Danieca Coffey[/autotag].

The Tigers would then combine for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get to the run-rule margin, headlined by a two-RBI double from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] in the final frame.

LSU will be back in action for another doubleheader on Saturday against San Diego State and McNeese as it looks to remain unbeaten.

LSU softball opens the season with a 5-0 weekend, all shutouts

The Tigers didn’t allow a run this weekend, and three of their five shutout wins came by run-rule.

You really couldn’t ask for a better start to the season than coach Beth Torina’s LSU softball team did this weekend. The No. 15 Tigers began the season 5-0, all of which were shutouts and three of which came in run-rule fashion.

On Saturday, they finished up a double-header with an 8-0 victory over Memphis in five innings, with [autotag]Emilee Cassanova[/autotag] pitching a complete game while giving up just two hits and striking out five.

With one out in the bottom of the first, LSU got going quickly. [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] had a two-run single, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] added a third run with a sacrifice groundout.

The rest of the action came in the third. [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Sierra Daniel[/autotag] hit back-to-back RBI singles, while two more runs scored on bases-loaded walks to [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and a hit-by-pitch to [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag].

LSU will now head to Florida next weekend for the Clearwater Invitational, where it will face Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Washington and Minnesota.

LSU softball rolls in Baton Rouge Regional opener with dominating run-rule win over Prairie View A&M

The Tigers move on to face Louisiana in the winners bracket on Saturday.

It was all LSU in the opener against Prairie View A&M at the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday evening. The Tigers began the NCAA tournament on a high note as they rolled to a 12-2 run-rule win in five innings.

Now, coach Beth Torina’s team will move on to the 1-0 game on Saturday against Louisiana, which won its opener over Omaha 5-3.

Despite putting away the first two batters she faced to begin the game, Tigers starting pitcher [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] couldn’t escape the first inning unscathed as she gave up a one-run homer to right field to give the Panthers the early lead. She responded with a strikeout, her second of the frame, to avoid further damage.

That lead wouldn’t last long, though. LSU led off the bottom of the frame with three-straight singles to load up the bases, and a sacrifice fly from [autotag]Georgia Clark[/autotag] brought home [autotag]Danieca Coffey[/autotag] as well as [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] after an errant throw home.

[autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] added a third run in the inning on another sacrifice, this time from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag]. [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] would then add to the lead in the bottom of the second with a leadoff solo shot over the center field wall to give LSU a 4-1 lead.

Later in the inning, Prairie View recorded another error on a throw to first after an attempted sac-bunt from Coffey, sending [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] home from third still with no outs on the board. A subsequent single allowed to Briggs would prove to be the end of Panthers starter Jerrica Rojas’ night.

That wouldn’t end the onslaught, though. Pleasants greeted the new pitcher with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 7-1.

Things just got worse for PVAMU in the third. With runners at second and third, Gutierrez scored on a passed ball. Briggs reached on a throwing error, allowing Coffey to score, and an RBI double from Pleasants brought Briggs home.

An [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] home run capped off the inning and gave the Tigers a 12-1 lead. Prairie View would get a run back in the top of the fourth, but it stranded two runners on and remained in run-rule position.

The Panthers got two on in the top of the fifth in hopes of avoiding the end of the game, but Chaffin got a game-ending eighth strikeout. In her NCAA tournament debut, Chaffin was electric. She allowed just two hits and one earned run in a complete game victory.

LSU will face the Ragin’ Cajuns in the winner’s bracket at noon CT on Saturday.
