Cowboys host 3 veteran free agents, including two-time Super Bowl RB

The Cowboys were scheduled to bring in a trio of free agents as they look to fill in a few roster gaps with experienced talent that should come somewhat cheaper than the big-name veterans signed during last week’s initial rush.

Running back Ronald Jones II, linebacker Travin Howard, and offensive lineman Chuma Edoga were expected to undergo physicals and be evaluated Monday at the The Star in Frisco, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Jones played high school ball in the Metroplex before a three-year college career at USC. A second-round draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2018, Jones logged 2,174 rushing yards over four seasons with the Bucs, winning a Super Bowl in the process. In 2022, he signed with Kansas City, but he got into just six games with the Chiefs; he won another Super Bowl ring in February but did not take the field during the game.

Howard played collegiately at TCU and was a seventh-round draft pick by the Rams in 2018. He made just 29 regular-season game appearances over three years; his most memorable highlight came in the 2021 NFC Championship, when he picked off a Jimmy Garoppolo pass in the final two minutes to send the Rams to Super Bowl LVI. He was out for most of 2022 with a core muscle injury, but Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel is familiar with Howard after their time together in L.A.

Edoga was a third-round selection by the Jets in 2019 out of USC. After three seasons in New York as a tackle who could play either the right or left side, the lineman was claimed off waivers by Atlanta and saw work at left guard.

Falcons OL Chuma Edoga will go on IR, WR Jared Bernhardt returns

According to Arthur Smith, the #Falcons will place OL Chuma Edoga on IR, and WR Jared Bernhardt will make his return to practice

The Atlanta Falcons will soon place offensive lineman Chuma Edoga on the injured reserve list, head coach Arthur Smith revealed on Wednesday morning. Backup center Matt Hennessy could be activated in a corresponding move.

Edoga has missed the last two games due to a knee injury. He has filled in admirably when called upon but was unlikely to play over the final two games as the offensive line gets healthier.

Smith announced a few other moves as well, per ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

Wide receiver Jared Bernhardt and offensive lineman Justin Shaffer have been designated to return, opening up their 21-day practice window. Bernhardt made the team’s initial 53-man roster out of training camp following a strong preseason performance.

Shaffer, the former Georgia Bulldog, was drafted by the Falcons in the sixth round. He has spent most of the 2022 season developing on the practice squad.

Falcons vs. Ravens: Final injury report for Week 16 matchup

Injury Report: #Falcons OL Chuma Edoga, #Ravens QB Lamar Jackson ruled OUT for Week 16 matchup in Baltimore

The Atlanta Falcons (5-9) will look to end their three-game losing streak when they take on the Baltimore Ravens (9-5) in Week 16. As you would expect, the Ravens are favored at home, but the Falcons’ chances of winning have improved dramatically following Thursday’s practice.

Baltimore ruled out three players, including quarterback Lamar Jackson (knee) and defensive lineman Calais Campbell (knee), for Saturday’s game. Atlanta listed just one player on the team’s final injury report.

Reserve offensive lineman Chuma Edoga (knee) has been ruled out for Saturday’s game after missing all three days of practice. Check out the full injury report for both teams heading into Week 16 below.

The #Falcons have ruled out OL Chuma Edoga for Sunday’s game against the Saints

The Atlanta Falcons (5-8) have ruled up backup offensive lineman Chuma Edoga for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints (4-9). Fortunately for the Falcons, Edoga is their only player with an injury designation heading into Week 15.

Wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge returned to practice on Friday after missing the previous day due to illness, along with running back Cordarrelle Patterson, who was given a day off for rest on Thursday.

Check out the team’s final Week 15 injury report below.

It’s also important to note that left guard Elijah Wilkinson has practiced this week but is still technically on injured reserve. Look for the Falcons to make a move in the next day to activate Wilkinson if they intend to play him against the Saints.

The NFL’s most interesting Wednesday waiver claims

After final cuts on Tuesday, NFL teams had Wednesday to claim players on the open market. Here are the most interesting waiver claims.

The bad news as NFL teams get down to their league-mandated 53-man rosters is that hundreds of players lost their jobs Tuesday, August 30 by 4:00 p.m. EST. That’s when the clock stopped for anything more than the final 53.

The good news? That’s a lot of talent on the open market, and teams are looking to place waiver claims on some of those players — and some of those players still have a lot left in the tank.

Here’s how it all works, once it’s time to pick from those players, especially if those players are added to practice squads.

Here are the most interesting players who were cut on Tuesday, and were subsequently added to other rosters on Wednesday.

Former Jets OT Chuma Edoga claimed off waivers by Falcons

Chuma Edoga is headed to Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons have claimed offensive tackle Chuma Edoga off waivers from the Jets, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Jets were looking for a trade partner for Edoga, including the Cowboys, reportedly, but could not find one, leading to him being waived Tuesday.

Edoga was splitting first-team reps with rookie Max Mitchell between the time that Mekhi Becton suffered his knee injury and the signing of Duane Brown. He will now compete for the right tackle job in Atlanta with 2019 first-round pick Kaleb McGary.

Jets cut Chuma Edoga after not finding a trade partner

The Jets move on from a former Maccagnan draft pick

The Jets are letting go of former third-round pick OT Chuma Edoga, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Jets were attempting to trade Edoga and it was reported that the Dallas Cowboys had interest in Edoga but a deal never came to fruition. As a result, the Jets are just going to simply release him.

Edoga was drafted No. 92 overall by the Jets in the 2019 draft, the last draft ran by former general manager Mike Maccagnan. Edoga was running as one of the backups for the Jets at tackle, but the team seemed to like Max Mitchell more

Edoga appeared in 24 games with 12 starts over three seasons with the Jets.

Jets OL Cameron Clark taken to hospital after scary neck injury

Jets OL Cameron Clark was taken to the hospital after suffering a neck injury. Robert Saleh said he had “some” movement in his extremities.

A scary scene unfolded at Jets practice Tuesday when offensive lineman Cameron Clark was carted off the field and left in an ambulance after suffering a neck injury.

Robert Saleh cut practice short after Clark left the field on a spine board. The coach didn’t go into details about the cause or severity of the injury, though Saleh did say that Clark had “some” movement in his extremities. He added that the team will know more later Tuesday.

Clark was taken to Morristown Medical Center, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Clark was set to be a backup lineman – likely a guard – in his second season after the Jets took him in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. He did not play at all last year due in part to a shoulder injury.

Two other Jets left Tuesday’s practice early with injuries. Backup offensive lineman Chuma Edoga suffered a knee injury, but Saleh said that he doesn’t think it’s a “long-term” ailment. Defensive lineman Jabari Zuniga exited early as well, though Saleh didn’t know what the injury was when he spoke to reporters.

Zuniga missed a lot of time with a quad injury during his rookie season in 2020.

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives: Tua Tagovailoa out, Ryan Fitzpatrick to start for Miami

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives.

It’s officially once again Fitzmagic time.

After being downgraded to doubtful on Saturday, Tua Tagovailoa is inactive against the Jets after injuring his left thumb in practice on Wednesday. With Tagovailoa sidelined, Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his first start since he threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets in Week 6.

The Dolphins will also be without Salvon Ahmed, who has started their last two games at running back. Myles Gaskin also remains on injured reserve for another week with a knee injury, making Matt Breida Miami’s starter in Week 12.

As for the Jets, they will surprisingly be without Alex Lewis on Sunday afternoon. Lewis was listed as questionable on Friday after being limited in practice for a non-injury reason. With Lewis out, New York will be down two starters on its offensive line, as George Fant is inactive with ankle and knee injuries. Chuma Edoga is also out with an ankle injury, leaving Conor McDermott to start at right tackle. Cameron Clark is active and likely to start in place of Lewis at left guard.

New York’s other inactives are James Morgan and Ross Travis.

Tua Tagovailoa doubtful for Dolphins vs. Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to start

The Dolphins are likely to be without Tua Tagovailoa against the Jets in Week 12.

The Dolphins will likely be without Tua Tagovailoa when they travel to MetLife Stadium to take on the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Tagovailoa has been downgraded to doubtful for Miami’s Week 12 matchup after injuring his left thumb in practice on Wednesday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo. With Tagovailoa unlikely to play, Ryan Fitzpatrick is set to start for the first time since the Dolphins defeated New York, 21-0, in Week 6. Fitzpatrick shined in that game, throwing for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

The Jets also made a pair of injury-related moves on Saturday, adding Jimmy Murray to the active roster and placing Patrick Onwuasor on injured reserve. New York is dealing with quite a few injuries along its offensive line, as Chuma Edoga (ankle) and George Fant (knee/ankle) are doubtful for Sunday’s game. Connor McDermott is expected to start at right tackle.

Murray has jumped back and forth between the Jets’ practice squad and active roster in 2020, appearing on New York’s gameday roster five times. However, Murray has yet to play in a game for the Jets this season.

Onwuasor was activated from injured reserve on Nov. 18 after suffering a non-contact knee injury in training camp. The veteran linebacker played only eight special teams snaps against the Chargers last weekend before injuring his hamstring.
