A Wisconsin Badger earns Big Ten Freshman of the Week

The Badgers earn Big Ten weekly awards

After a 2-0 week, Wisconsin continued their dominance of the Big Ten basketball weekly awards.

Senior guard Brad Davison took home his first Big Ten Player of the Week award, while the Badgers also represented the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. That honor went to Nebraska native Chucky Hepburn, whose phenomenal point of attack defense stifled Marquette and Georgia Tech in the two Badger wins.

Hepburn averaged 11.0 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.0 steals in a pair of Badger victories.

Wisconsin has now won seven games in a row, as the Badgers get ready for Big Ten play this week. The conference slate starts on Wednesday when Indiana visits the Kohl Center.

After a solid first start in the win against St. Francis Brooklyn, freshman point guard Chucky Hepburn will lead the Badgers against a 0-1 Green Bay team in the yearly in-state rivalry. Hepburn finished with a team-high 13 points against St. Francis Brooklyn.

Although Wisconsin has won all but one of its matchups against Green Bay, the Phoenix should be a good test for this young Badgers team as they work their way into their tougher schedule.

Chucky Hepburn will join elite company if he starts in Wisconsin basketball’s season-opener

The Badger freshman would be the first opening-night true freshman starter in 20 years

Wisconsin basketball has traditionally been a program filled with upperclassmen. The 2021-22 iteration of the Badgers, however, sees a young core and exciting freshman class looking to gain Big Ten experience.

Buzz from Wisconsin practice has been that true freshman guard Chucky Hepburn looks likely to crack the Badger starting lineup when UW faces St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.

According to Assistant Director of Brand Communications at Wisconsin Brandon Harrison, that would be a feat over 20 years in the making. The last Badger to true freshman to start a season- opener? Devin Harris in 2001, who would go on to be a lottery pick in the 2004 NBA draft and spend 15 seasons in the league. Harris was also Big Ten Player of the Year in 2004 during his senior season as a Badger.

Hepburn looks to be following in elite footsteps on Tuesday night.

Although there are a lot of new faces going into the upcoming season, the Badgers will still be returning the experienced leadership of guard Brad Davison as well as several key contributors from last season like Jonathan Davis and Tyler Wahl.

WATCH: Future Wisconsin PG Chucky Hepburn put on a show as a senior

Next stop Madison for the 2021 PG

One of the best players in the history of the state of Nebraska is headed to Wisconsin next year. Class of 2021 Wisconsin signee Chucky Hepburn’s next stop is Madison, but he left his mark with Bellevue West in Nebraska as a senior.

The three-star recruit per 247Sports averaged over 15 points per game, over 8 assists, and five rebounds per game as his team came within one win of a back-to-back state championship. Check out the best moments from Hepburn’s senior campaign thanks to Courtside Films on YouTube:

Wisconsin basketball 2021 signee Chucky Hepburn’s stock is ready to rise in the 247Sports rankings

The future Badger is turning heads as a senior

National basketball director of 247Sports Eric Bossi recently released a list of players who he felt were primed for a rise in the recruiting rankings. Based on the year that Wisconsin 2021 signee Chucky Hepburn has had in the state of Nebraska, it was no surprise to see the future Badger included.

He has elevated his all-around game, and Bossi feels it may soon reflect in the rankings. Hepburn has a number of tools in his toolbox, and plays both ends of the floor at high level.

You aren’t going to be completely blown away by Hepburn’s athleticism or speed, but he can certainly get up when he needs to. He doesn’t rely on playing above the rim, but this video evidence is all you need to see to know he can fly when needed:

On the offensive end, he has developed into an all-around point guard who can create and elevate those around him while still getting his. Here is a deeper look at Hepburn on the offensive end from our BadgersWire scouting report:

Scouting Report: Class of 2021 PG Chucky Hepburn

Wisconsin is landing someone who should be ready for the Big Ten in year one and is currently playing the best basketball of his career. Don’t be surprised if the four-star PG cracks the top-100 at 247Sports soon.

Wisconsin 2021 commit Chucky Hepburn makes it official on signing day

The Badgers land a 2021 PG on national signing day

2021 four-star PG Chucky Hepburn has made it official. The Nebraska native will be headed to Madison next fall as part of the 2021 Wisconsin basketball class.

The Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year announced that he had signed his national letter of intent this morning, via Twitter.

The 6-foot-1 point guard averaged nearly 18 points per game and over six assists as a junior at Bellevue West High School in his home state of Nebraska. The future Badgers PG was also part of a miraculous comeback to take home a state championship in 2019.

Here is a piece from our BadgersWire scouting report of Hepburn:

One of the most impressive aspects of the point guard’s offensive game is his ability to make difficult outlet passes look easy. Hepburn often starts the break with a perfect 40-foot lob pass that quickly led to a layup. The 6-1 point guard also is excellent without the basketball, and knows how to cut and create space in order to put himself in positive situations offensively. He has the strength to finish through contact at the rim, and is certainly not somebody you should worry about being thrown off by the physicality of the college game. His change of pace ability is equally as impressive. Despite not wowing you with blazing speed, Hepburn beats defenders with footwork and the ability to catch an opposing player off balance. He has a tight handle and an already solid step-back move off the dribble. Hepburn also creates space with a nasty hesitation dribble.

Hepburn is going to be an excellent piece for Wisconsin in an already stacked class of 2021. A true two-way point guard, Hepburn is unafraid to play physical basketball. The crafty guard is somebody that should make Badger fans excited for the future.

Wisconsin has landed the first of three expected signees (Matthew Mors, Chris Hodges) on national signing day.

Evan Flood of 247Sports was on the Wisconsin basketball beat yesterday as he attended the opening round of Jammin’ in July–an AAU basketball tournament in Ames, Iowa–to watch three-star class of 2021 commit Chucky Hepburn and Team Factory face off against Minnesota Heat.

Hepburn is one of three commits in Greg Gard’s class of 2021 and is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 134 recruit in the country, the No. 20 point guard and the No. 2 player from his home state of Nebraska.

The Bellevue, Nebraska native chose the Badgers over Creighton, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa and others and is a pivotal piece in what is shaping up to be an impressive 2021 class for Gard and his staff.

The Wisconsin commit finished the contest with 23 points and five assists as his team fell to Minnesota Heat in a “hard-fought game.”

Here are the highlights from Hepburn’s appearance.
