Brock Purdy’s Younger Brother Chubba Decommits from SJSU and transfers to Nevada

Brock Purdy’s Younger Brother Decommits from SJSU and transfers to Nevada

The news of Brock Purdy‘s younger brother, Chubba, transferring from Nebraska to San Jose State lit up the Bay Area last weekend.

The idea of Chubba dominating on a Saturday followed by Brock on a Sunday was storyline gold. Seriously, what could be better than that?

But all those imaginations won’t become reality now that Chubba has decommited from SJSU and transferred to Mountain West-foe Nevada.

The news isn’t surprising after Chubba deleted his initial commitment post on Sunday, Jan. 21 — the same day SJSU announced the hiring of new head coach Ken Niumatalolo who will be taking over for Brent Brennan.

A former four-star from Gilbert, Ariz., Purdy played two years at Florida State, compiling 317 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, 147 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Then, after transferring to Nebraska in 2022 for two years, he threw for 529 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions while also rushing for 353 yards and three scores. He was 0-4 as a starter.

Purdy’s commitment to Nevada also comes on the same day SJSU running back Quali Conley entered the transfer portal. 247 Sports’ crystal ball puts Conley’s chances at transferring to UA at 100%.

If Conley becomes a Wildcat, it could signify former SJSU associate head coach, running backs coach, and recruiting coordinator Alonzo “Zo” Carter joining Brennan in Tucson.

So now, if Niumatalolo doesn’t bring in a quarterback through the transfer portal, SJSU’s options are Oregon transfer Jay Butterfield, freshman Anthony Garcia, redshirt freshman Tyler Voss, and redshirt sophomore Walker Eget.

Also noteworthy, is that Niumatalolo won’t be running his patented triple option offense at SJSU this season and, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, “is expected to target an offensive coordinator for some type of wide-open and pass-heavy system.”

Niumatalolo utilized the triple option in his 25 years of coaching at Navy. In his 15 years as a head coach from 2007-2022, he became the winningest head coach in program history, went to 10 bowl games, and from 2015-19 was a three-time recipient of the American Athletic Conference coach of the year award as the Midshipmen had four AP Top 25 poll finishes.

A closer look at quarterback Chubba Purdy’s transfer to San Jose State

The former Nebraska quarteback will finish his college career closer to home.

Former Nebraska and Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy will continue his collegiate career at San Jose State.

On Monday, Purdy announced that he will be taking his talents to San Jose, where he’ll be set to use his final year of eligibility.

The younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, the Arizona native, signed with Florida State out of high school, where he was a consensus four-star prospect.

After two years with the Seminoles, Purdy transferred to Nebraska where he played in 12 games, completing 53-of-105 passing attempts for 529 yards and two touchdowns while throwing six interceptions. He also had 253 rushing yards and three touchdowns in his time with the Huskers.

Notably, however, while Purdy has committed to San Jose State, the Spartans’ head coach Brent Brennan has become the favorite to land the head coaching job at Arizona, according to multiple reports, including by The Ahletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Now, Purdy will look to be San Jose State’s starting quarterback in 2024. Find a photo gallery of Chubba Purdy’s career below.

Bay Area added another Purdy

Hello and welcome to Matt’s Monday Mailbag™ your go-to destination for all pressing SJSU football and men’s basketball matters.

Enough chit-chat. Let’s get into it.

Thomas Christian: @ThomasGoatnba: “What do we think of signing Brock Purdy’s lil bro?”

Optics wise, signing Chubba Purdy was a good move. The connection to Brock will generate buzz this program desperately needs.

Football wise, I like this move, too. Compared to any other SJSU quarterback available, Purdy has started multiple games at the Power Five level. And sure, he went 0-4 at Nebraska last season, but I’ll take that over SJSU QB Jay Butterfield who has 15 career pass attempts.

[lawrence-related id=58874]

Furthermore, Purdy’s mobility could be a massive help to SJSU’s offensive line which will feature four new starters.

Ryan B: @rbizzle16 “Do you think it’s fair to say that we’d have a good chance at being 4-0 in league if we had Rob V [Vaihola] in the lineup?”

Oh, without a doubt.

Each loss featured an example where SJSU’s frontcourt was outmatched.

In the Wyoming loss, SJSU was outscored in the paint 36-20 which played a pivotal role in the squandered 17-point lead. In its next loss to Boise State, SJSU allowed power forward O’mar Stanley to net 30 points and 11 rebounds. A few days later, No. 19 San Diego State’s power forward Jaedon LeDee finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds.

Imagine the destruction a frontcourt of Vaihola and seven-footer Adrame Diongue could inflict upon opponents?

Ricky Delgado: @RickyDe70535587 “A sign of a good team is that they can handle adversity (especially on the road) and still find ways to win. So far this season we hadn’t done that but on Saturday we did. I take it as an indication they are starting to gel and improve. We’re on the upswing and I’m excited For the rest of the season.”

Myron “MJ” Amey Jr.’s buzzer-beating three over Air Force should signify SJSU shifting course of its late-game woes.

But I just don’t know.

The Spartans let a 46-33 halftime lead over the Cadets wither into a 66-61 deficit. Yes, SJSU rallied back triumphantly. But with 10 seconds left and SJSU up 67-66, what if AFA’s Rytis Petraitis went 2-for-2 not 1-for-2 from the line? More importantly, what if he didn’t step out with 1.5 seconds left after he rebounded SJSU point guard Alvaro Cardenas’ airballed three? Lastly, AFA is the second-worst team in the conference.

Not saying it can’t happen. Just important to remember the context surrounding Amey Jr.’s dagger.

Fake Matt Mumme:@FakeCoachMumme “What’s the best burger in Santa Clara County?”

Not sure if it’s the best burger (I’m more of a chicken sandwich guy) but the best I’ve had is the Breakfast Burger at Egghead Sando

Paring over-easy eggs with caramelized onions as a burger topping is beyond elite.

Ricky Delgado @RickyDe70535587 “Incredibly happy for the players, especially MJ to get that win on Saturday. I could see some of them had that “here we go again look” like the football team did early in the season. I keep going back to football season because I can’t help how similar these two teams feel. With that said, a turnaround similar to the one the football team had is improbable. However, this team will compete night in and night out with any team in the conference and I feel like they’re even going to upset a couple of the big programs.”

I think this team will be a gambler’s worst nightmare.

Last Tuesday, SJSU nearly upset No. 19 San Diego State, 81-78. Then followed that up by needing an improbable buzzer-beating three from Amey Jr. to escape a woeful Air force.

Don’t be surprised if SJSU struggles at home against Fresno State (No. 254 NET ranking) on Feb. 6 and then has Colorado State (No. 20 NET ranking) on the ropes in its next game.

Which is why I believe SJSU can win eight of its next 14 games to clinch eligibility for the CBI. But at the same time I wouldn’t put any money on it.

Former Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy commits to San José State

A former Nebraska quarterback has found a new home.

A former Nebraska quarterback has found a new home. Chubba Purdy announced on Twitter that he is committed to San José State for the 2024 season.

This is Purdy’s second transfer in his collegiate career. Purdy arrived in Nebraska after spending two seasons at Florida State. He played in 12 games for the Huskers across two seasons, making four starts.

Purdy also started in the final two games of the 2023 season for the Cornhuskers, where he threw for 358 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while rushing for 147 yards.

For his Nebraska career, Purdy tallied up 529 passing yards, 253 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

The quarterback now joins a San José State team that finished 7-6 in the 2023 season. The Spartans tied for first in the Mountain West Conference and faced Coastal Carolina in the EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl, where they lost 24-14.

Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy expected to enter transfer portal

A second Nebraska quraterback is expected to enter the transfer portal this month.

Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy is heading back into the transfer portal. Two years after arriving in Lincoln and transferring into the Huskers’ program from Florida State, Purdy will be searching for a third school.

Sean Callahan of HuskersOnline was the first to report the development.

The 22-year-old signal-caller out of Arizona recently completed his redshirt sophomore season with the Cornhuskers, playing in six games and completing 31 of 57 passes for 382 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also had 180 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown this season.

Purdy has appeared in 16 games as a Seminole or Husker for his career, completing 85 of 163 passing attempts for 846 yards and six touchdowns while throwing seven interceptions. On the ground, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has totaled 73 carries for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2 quarterback was a consensus four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle, ranked as high as No. 126 overall by ESPN. He was also considered a top-10 quarterback in the nation by both 247Sports and Rivals.

Before committing to Florida State, Purdy also had offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Boston College, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan State, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, UNLV, Utah, and Washington State.

With Purdy’s departure, the Huskers will be left with three scholarship quarterbacks on their roster in 2024, with rising redshirt junior Heinrich Haarberg and a pair of true freshman quarterbacks in 2024 signees Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin. Earlier this month, Jeff Sims also entered the transfer portal after playing in five games for the Huskers this season.

Huskers lose 13-10 heartbreaker to No. 17 Iowa

It all came down to this for Nebraska football.

It all came down to this for Nebraska football. A Black Friday game at home on Senior Day against No. 17 Iowa. Both teams found ways all season to either win or lose. That didn’t change today as the Huskers and the Hawkeyes found a way. For Nebraska, it was a way to lose, and for Iowa, it was a way to win.

For the third time this season, the Huskers watched as their opponent kicked the go-ahead field goal to take a 13-10 win. Yet somehow, this one was the most remarkable. Tied 10-10 with less than a minute to go, Tommi Hill picked off Iowa’s Deacon Hill to give Nebraska an opportunity to get into field goal range. But then a few plays later, Chubba Purdy threw an interception, putting the Hawkeyes in field goal range.

Purdy’s lone interception, along with his second-quarter fumble, resulted in both of Iowa’s field goals on the afternoon. He finished the game with 189 yards passing and a touchdown pass.

Freshman Jaylen Lloyd once again was on the receiving end of Purdy’s touchdown pass, this time hauling in a 66-yard bomb and turning on the jets to take it for the score. Freshman Tristan Alvano went 1-of-2 in field goal kicking, nailing a 44-yarder with the wind to his back and missing a 44-yarder into the wind.

Nebraska’s defense put together another big showing, despite once again coming up short. The Blackshirts held Deacon Hill to 94 yards passing, along with picking him off once. Though it surrendered 163 yards rushing, Nebraska’s defense made up for it in field goal blocking. The Huskers blocked two field goals in the loss, keeping them in the game. However, Iowa found a way to sneak off with the win.

The Huskers finish the regular season at 5-7, their best season since 2019, but will not be bowl-eligible. If Nebraska isn’t selected, it will be the seventh straight year without a bowl game trip.

Chubba Purdy confirmed as starting Nebraska QB versus Iowa Hawkeyes

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Wednesday that Huskers quarterback Chubba Purdy would start against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Iowa Hawkeyes get another crack at the Purdy family line.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Wednesday that redshirt sophomore quarterback Chubba Purdy would start for the Huskers against Iowa. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound quarterback will make his second start of the season and fifth of his collegiate career.

Purdy started last week at Wisconsin in a 24-17 overtime loss versus the Badgers. The Queen Creek, Arizona, resident led a pair of first-quarter touchdown drives.

On the Huskers’ first possession, Purdy took a third-and-3 snap, rolled right and then scrambled down the sideline and then upfield into the clear for a 55-yard touchdown run.

Next, on Nebraska’s second possession, Purdy connected with freshman wide receiver Jaylen Lloyd for a 58-yard touchdown pass that put the Huskers in front 14-0.

After those two opening scores though, Nebraska added just the lone field goal on the Huskers’ final drive of regulation to take the game into overtime. The Huskers punted on four of their five second-half drives, and Purdy was intercepted by Wisconsin safety Preston Zachman on a last-gasp fourth-and-16 overtime snap.

Purdy finished 15-of-24 passing for 169 yards with the one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 14 times for 105 yards with the opening score.

In his career, Purdy has appeared in 15 games. Purdy became only the fifth true freshman quarterback to start a game at Florida State when he did so at North Carolina State in a 38-22 loss for the Seminoles on Nov. 14, 2020. He completed 15-of-23 passes for 181 yards with a pair of touchdown passes in that contest for Florida State.

Purdy also started and lost a pair of games last season for Nebraska. He completed 6-of-16 passes for 41 yards with an interception in a 20-13 loss versus Minnesota. He did rush for a score against the Gophers.

Then, Purdy started and completed 6-of-11 passes for 56 yards in a 34-3 loss at then-No. 3 Michigan. Purdy was injured late in the first half.

Of course, Purdy is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback and former Iowa State starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy finished 0-2 against the Hawkeyes as the starting quarterback.

Iowa beat Iowa State in Ames, 18-17 in the 2019 season and 27-17 in the 2021 season.

Rhule pleased with Purdy’s performance

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the team’s 24-17 overtime loss against Wisconsin.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the team’s 24-17 overtime loss against Wisconsin. Chubba Purdy made his first start of the year at quarterback and the man in charge was pleased with his performance.

“I thought Chubba played really well. He had that one play on the sideline where maybe it was an interception and the ball went out of bounds but I thought he protected the football. I thought he pulled the ball out when he wanted to run. I thought he converted on third down. I thought he was hot in the first half.”

Purdy finished the game 15/24 passing for 169 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He added 14 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown. Rhule told the press that he believes his quarterback’s performance is something that Purdy can grow from.

“He was doing a nice job in my opinion if it wasn’t there of just pulling the ball down and going. Obviously, we hit a little bit of a lull there at the beginning of the second half. Kind of watching them, that’s kind of what they’ve done to people. But found a way at the end to go make some plays. For his first start for us this year, I thought it was really something to build on.”

There’s been no indication of who will start for the Cornhuskers in Friday’s regular-season finale against Iowa. The decision will likely come down to Heinrich Haarberg or Chubba Purdy. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. on CBS.

Nebraska falls in overtime to Wisconsin

Based off the first two drives, it seemed as though Nebraska came to dominate on offense against Wisconsin.

Based on the first two drives, it seemed as though Nebraska came to dominate on offense against Wisconsin. But those hopes were soon extinguished on a gutsy fourth-down call by head coach Matt Rhule. Instead of attempting a 50-yard field, the Huskers went for it on fourth and one, only to be halted by the Badgers.

Then everything changed. Wisconsin outscored Nebraska 24-3 from there on out, resulting in a 24-17 overtime win for the Badgers.

Chubba Purdy earned the start for the Huskers and delivered the best showing by a Nebraska quarterback in the last few weeks. Purdy threw for 169 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown. Purdy’s touchdown pass saw him throw a dot to freshman Jaylen Lloyd, who broke a tackle and took off for a score.

But Nebraska never found its way into the endzone after that. Tristan Alvano sent the game into overtime with a 30-yard field goal after missing a 42-yarder earlier, but the inconsistent offensive play resulted in the loss.

Despite surrendering 24 points, the defense made big stops on the night, including back-to-back fourth down stops and holding Braelon Allen to just 62 yards rushing. Allen did score two touchdowns as Wisconsin slowly but surely worked its way into the endzone each time.

Nebraska falls to 5-6 on the season and will return home to host Iowa on Friday afternoon. The Huskers need to win their season finale to become bowl-eligible. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed on CBS.

Nebraska unsure who will start at quarterback on Saturday

Who will play quarterback for Nebraska on Saturday night?

Who will play quarterback for Nebraska on Saturday night? The top three quarterbacks on the depth chart took the field in the Huskers’ loss against Maryland, and all three are options this weekend.

The Cornhuskers are trying to decide between the injured Heinrich Haarberg, former starter Jeff Sims, and backup Chubba Purdy. Head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Thursday afternoon and said all three quarterbacks are still in the running to start on Saturday.

“Heinrich’s going to practice tomorrow. He’s obviously been out there on a limited basis. Chubba and Jeff have gotten most of the reps. But I know he definitely wants to play. He’s pushing to come back and play, and so we’ll see how he does tomorrow and get him to the game, warm him up.”

He also complimented the work that Sims and Purdy have done in practice this week. Rhule went on to state that the quarterback room has been hard at work to try and fix the five-turnover performance last Saturday.

“I think Jeff and Chubba have done a really nice job this week. Obviously any time you have the things that transpired last week, I think everyone comes in determined, knowing that they can fix some of those things. I think we fixed a lot of things as a staff and as players. They both, with a chance knowing, ‘Hey, I get all the reps,’ they’ve been able to get a lot of reps, and they’ve done a really nice job. And so we’re prepared to play either one or both.”

When asked about Haarberg’s recovery from his injury, Rhule made it clear that Heinrich will only see the field if he can contribute to the offense in some impactful way.

“He’ll definitely be available in some capacity, but whether he starts or not, I think, will just depend on how he feels on game day. We obviously wouldn’t want to put him out there if we weren’t able to run him and run the option and do the things that he does best. And so he’ll test it full speed again tomorrow and see if he has the same good results.”

Nebraska will take the field at Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday against the Wisconsin Badgers. Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on NBC.
