Alabama Morning Drive: 2022 NFL draft recap

The latest news and notes involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday morning.

Good Monday morning ladies and gentlemen! I hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready to get another work week started.

It was a busy weekend across the sports world. The 2022 NFL draft stole the headlines and once again [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama were well represented.

In this edition of Alabama Morning Drive, we are going to take a look at each former member of the Crimson Tide that was drafted and where they are headed. We will also look at those who went undrafted but would sign as undrafted free agents.

Let’s just get right to it!

First…the undrafted…

Broncos signed 2 of the top undrafted free agents available

Christopher Allen and Ja’Quan McMillian were among the top UDFAs available, and the Broncos signed both of them.

After selecting nine players in the 2022 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos then signed 13 undrafted free agents. Two of those UDFAs stand out.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling both published lists of the top UDFAs available after the draft wrapped up on Saturday evening. Alabama pass rusher Christopher Allen, who signed with Denver, was on both of their lists.

Allen (6-3, 241 pounds) missed last season with a broken foot. Before that, he totaled 54 tackles (including 18.5 tackles for losses), 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery from 2017-2020 (19 games). NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein predicted Allen would be a fourth-round pick, so landing him as an UDFA is a big get for the Broncos.

Easterling also included East Carolina cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian on his list of top UDFAs — he’s another player who signed with Denver.

McMillian (5-10, 183 pounds) was a playmaker for the Pirates, totaling 127 tackles, 28 pass breakups, 12 interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown in three years (33 games).

Denver has a great tradition of landing undrafted free agent gems who go on to make the roster — Allen and McMillian will aim to continue that trend this summer.

10 Alabama players selected in latest seven round NFL mock draft

Alabama’s NFL draft dominance looks to continue in 2022.

In just five days the 2022 NFL draft will get underway and the future stars of the NFL will take center stage. Life-long dreams will become a reality for some over the three-day event. For those not selected, the pain of disappointment will reign supreme.

With the draft just a few days away, NFL analysts are continuously updating their big boards and mock drafts as they give their educated guesses on how the draft may unfold.

Since Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, nobody has sent more players to the NFL than the Alabama Crimson Tide and the 2022 draft won’t be much different.

In the latest seven-round mock draft courtesy of NFL.com’s Chad Reuter, a total of 10 former members of the Crimson Tide are projected to be selected. Let’s take a look at the who and the where.

9 Alabama players selected in Jordan Reid’s seven-round NFL mock draft

See where these nine former Alabama football stars land in the latest seven-round mock draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid.

With just 17 days until the start of the 2022 NFL Draft, the anticipation is building for fans and players alike. Not only are fans and draft-eligible players excited, but NFL draft analysts are as well. Mock drafts and big boards are being updated and refreshed around the clock.

The latest mock draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid features a full seven-round mock that is littered with former players from the University of Alabama.

Nick Saban has assembled some of the top talent in the country in his time with the Crimson Tide and that fact has been proven by wins and by the amount of NFL draft picks.

The 2022 draft will be no different. According to Reid, a total of nine former Alabama stars will be selected come late April.

NFL Draft Analyst claims Alabama’s light draft class is not cause for concern

No draft records will be broken by Alabama this year, but that shouldn’t lead to panic.

With the NFL and college football seasons having both concluded, football fans and experts have turned their focus to the upcoming 2022 NFL draft. The Crimson Tide and the program’s former players are no strangers to the annual draft, as the first round is usually loaded with Nick Saban products.

Though Alabama fans have grown accustomed to seeing former players take over the first round, this year’s draft is expected to see only two, potentially three, players selected on night No. 1.

Pro Football Focus’ lead draft analyst Mike Renner states that this will probably be the lightest Crimson Tide draft class in recent years. Renner continued to explain how this is likely an outlier, and not the beginning of a trend.

As a guest on The Next Round Live, Renner discussed the players entering the 2022 draft representing Alabama and where they stand.

No, Alabama won’t be breaking any record this year, but the team will still likely see over five players selected within the first three or four rounds.

3-round 2022 NFL mock draft for Denver Broncos

Draft Wire’s recent NFL mock draft has the Broncos going LB, OT, QB, DL and OLB in the first three rounds.

In his latest three-round 2022 NFL mock draft for Draft Wire, Luke Easterling has the Denver Broncos selecting Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean with the ninth overall pick in the first round.

Here is Easterling’s commentary for the Dean pick:

Assuming the Broncos seek their quarterback solution via free agency or a trade, they’ll still have a few different directions they can go here. Three tackles are already gone, which means they’re more likely to go defense, where they find a three-down playmaker in Dean who can make an immediate impact.

After that, Easterling has Denver going on to select Kentucky OT Darian Kinnard (pictured) at No. 40, Nevada QB Carson Strong at No. 63, Ohio State DL Haskell Garrett at No. 75 and Alabama edge defender Christopher Allen at No. 95.

Such a draft would fill five positions of need for the Broncos in the first three rounds, and Denver would still have six picks remaining after that.

7 Alabama players selected in latest 3-round NFL mock draft

To the surprise of no one, Alabama is well represented

Even with the NFL playoffs in full swing, the 2022 NFL draft is still front and center on the headlines. Since Nick Saban took over the Crimson Tide, Alabama has dominated the NFL draft and 2022 will not be any different.

The Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl practices will be beginning soon and players from all around the country will be competing in front of NFL scouts from every franchise.

Earlier today Draft Wire released its updated three-round 2022 NFL draft projections and the Crimson Tide is well represented. In this mock draft, Alabama is projected to have seven players selected within the first 96 picks.

ALABAMA DRAFT TRACKER: Who’s staying, who’s going

Tracking which Alabama players are returning and which are entering the NFL draft

After Monday night’s championship loss to the Georgia Bulldogs a flurry of Alabama players have been making decisions on their playing futures.

Some have entered the transfer portal, but several have also made the decision to enter the NFL draft or remain in Tuscaloosa with the Tide.

With Alabama having such a talented roster, it can be difficult to keep up with what each player has decided to do. To help all of us get a better idea of which players are heading off to the NFL and which are choosing to remain at Alabama, here is the most up-to-date list.

Injury update ahead of Alabama-Florida collision

The latest injury update before the SEC clash between Alabama and Florida!

Injuries are a part of the game of football, unfortunately. With that being said, both Alabama and Florida are still relatively healthy overall. But there are a few injury updates that need to be addressed before the two teams collide in Gainesville.

For Florida, it was reported earlier by Gators Wire that quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability is pending the results of an MRI from earlier Saturday morning.

Richardson’s availability will play a critical role in the outcome of today’s contest between the Tide and the Gators.

It should also be noted that starting linebacker Ventrell Miller is out for the remainder of the season for the Gators with torn biceps.

On Alabama’s end, the Tide is mostly healthy aside from Christopher Allen. Last weekend starting corners Josh Jobe and Jayln Armour-Davis missed the contest against Mercer with injuries. All indications are that both players will be available today.

The biggest question heading into today’s matchup for Alabama is the status of super sophomore Will Anderson. Anderson limped off the field against Mercer early in the second half last week, but according to Coach Saban, Anderson practiced Thursday.

During his weekly radio program on Thursday night, Saban said, “he did more today than he has done all week”.

It hasn’t officially been announced that Anderson will play, but it seems he is very likely to compete today against the Gators.
