2023 NFL draft big board: Cornerbacks

Ranking the prospects in a very good cornerback class in the 2023 NFL draft

Up next in the 2023 NFL positional big boards is the cornerback group.

It’s a very good year to need a cornerback. This is a deep class with all sorts of athletic prowess and stylistic diversity. College football’s heavy emphasis on passing offense has developed many of these corners into more NFL-ready contributors right away than in the past, too.

2023 NFL draft big board: Running backs

As was the case with the running backs, different corners will have stronger appeal for some teams but less for other schemes. As an example, Devon Witherspoon will rank much higher for press-man coverage defenses but won’t have nearly as high of a ranking for zone-heavy schemes. These are broader rankings based on overall ability; adjust for scheme accordingly.

2023 NFL Draft: 3 alternate players the Lions could draft at 6th overall

3 prospects who don’t get projected to the Lions often at No. 6 who should get more consideration

It’s been an eventful off-season for Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions. He’s done a wonderful job signing players on reasonable deals while being able to restructure contracts.

Some of those restructured contracts include Tracy Walker, Romeo Okwara and Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Per Spotrac, the Lions have close to $26 million dollars in cap space. It’ll be interesting if the Lions make any trades or anymore splashes in free agency. There’s not many free agents that’ll cause a ton of sizzle but there could be a player or two they could sign to provide some type of impact next season.

While we turn our attention away from free agency and contracts, let’s take a look at some draft prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft. Most mock drafts have one of the following players predicted to be the 6th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft:

  • Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas Tech
  • Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama
  • Jalen Carter, IDL, Georgia
  • Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois
  • Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon

It feels like one of them should be the 6th overall pick for Detroit. But let me play devil’s advocate and look at a couple of different options. The following players listed below could very well be near the top of the Detroit Lion’s draft board and nobody is talking about them. Let’s jump into three players that are different than the consensus for the 6th overall pick.

Peter Skoronski, OT, Northwestern

I have been somewhat surprised that Peter Skoronski hasn’t been talked about more as a fit for the Detroit Lions. If you think about players that fit what they preach, he kinda falls inline with all of it. He’s physical and technically sound but also feels like a “gritty” type of player that fits Detroit.

Also, he’s about as consistent as they come for an offensive lineman. In my scouting report, I’ve labeled him as a player that’s “a consistent technician that has quick and clean feet while being able to maintain low pad level consistently in the run and passing game.” One of the easiest evaluations in this class, there’s a high chance that he starts from day one for a team.

During his career at Northwestern, he was able to tally up over 2300 career snaps at left tackle and only gave up 5 career sacks (per PFF). Many people consider him a plug-and-play guard at the next level but it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up playing tackle for a team.

One thing that will get pinned against Skoronski is his arm length. Check the tape though because there’s a lot more reps of him holding his own against defenders with longer arms than him losing those reps. Keep in mind that arm length doesn’t matter either. Hutchinson has 32 1/8″ arms and Skoronski has 32 1/4″ arms. The Lions just want good football players.

For the Lions, Skoronski could easily play tackle but it wouldn’t be surprising if they moved him to guard. Sure, the Lions have Vaitai at right guard but health has been a major concern since he arrived in Detroit. Meanwhile, Graham Glasgow is only on a one-year deal. There’s a chance that Skoronski edges both players out and is an immediate starter for Detroit while having the brightest future of any offensive lineman from the 2023 NFL Draft. Keep close tabs on him with the 6th overall pick.

Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia

Many fans in Detroit want Jalen Carter out of Georgia and I can’t blame them. On the field, he’s one of the best players in the 2023 NFL Draft, if not, the best player. That said, you do have to worry about everything that’s happening off the field for him. So Detroit, please keep in mind that he could be off their board.

By the time we get to the 6th overall pick, there could be a chance that we see Tyree Wilson and Will Anderson off the board. One could be selected by Arizona and the other by Seattle. Certainly the Lions could go and grab Myles Murphy from Clemson but what about Nolan Smith from Georgia? Similar to what we discussed above on Peter Skoronski, it feels like Nolan Smith fits what is being built in Detroit.

Smith is a violent football player regardless of size and he’ll matchup against anyone. He doesn’t care about being David while matching up against Goliath. He loves contact and is looking to punish the opposition. On the field, Smith displays great versatility and is able to align in a variety of spots from a stand-up 7-technique or he could even cover the slot (8 snaps per PFF).

Most likely to stand-up as a pass-rusher, you can send Smith after the quarterback or he could drop into the flats to stop the pass. By far, my favorite thing he does on the field is how he attacks blocks. There could be a split-zone block coming right at him and he’ll blow the block up while helping his teammates on the tackle.

Some could even say that nobody did more for their draft stock at the Scouting Combine than Nolan Smith. I would certainly agree with that statement. Smith is 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds with 32 5/8″ arms. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds and had a 41.5″ vertical. Despite only playing 8 games last season due to a torn pectoral muscle, it seems likely that he’ll be a top-15 pick in April. If the Lions top players start to fall off the board, they could certainly consider a player such as Smith with the 6th overall pick.

Lukas Van Ness, EDGE, Iowa

This one certainly feels like a long shot from everything I’ve gathered. But similar to the situation listed above, it’s possible. If you look at the type of edge rushers the Detroit Lions have brought in under Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, it does feel like they have a “type.”

That type is a versatile defensive lineman that can play anywhere and everywhere. For example, we see Hutchinson aligned inside as a 3-technique and other times we see him standing up off the edge. The same happens with John Cominsky, Josh Paschal and others.

With that, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Lions took a liking to Lukas Van Ness from Iowa. Realistically, the 18th overall pick seems more reasonable for Van Ness but if a team likes a guy, they normally take that guy. Detroit could follow that approach.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Detroit loves the effort and blend of power and speed from Van Ness. It immediately pops off the tape and he’s the type of player that could take his game to the another level if he develops a more consistent pass rush plan. His hands aren’t always active and he’s a bit power-centric, but his length and frame are impressive.

Consistency will be key for him in the NFL but with the Detroit Lions coaching staff, it’s all possible. There’s plenty of intrigue around his 6-foot-5 and 272 pound frame. Much of that is due to his 34″ arms and the fact that he ran 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds. The former hockey player, who spent almost 12 years of his youth on the ice could find himself in Hockeytown sooner rather than later.

Christian Gonzalez lands with new team in Mel Kiper’s Mock Draft 3.0

Christian Gonzalez is once again projected to land inside the top 10 of the 2023 NFL Draft. This time, Kiper has him landing with a different team than most.

Based on where you look Oregon Ducks cornerback Christian Gonzalez has the potential to land with a number of different teams in the 2023 NFL Draft this April, all of them picking somewhere in the first round.

After his remarkable showing at the NFL Combine, and his impressive Pro Day in Eugene, Gonzalez has solidified himself as a first-round pick in the draft, and there’s a good chance that he finds himself being selected within the top 10 picks.

We’ve covered this extensively, going through mock draft round-ups every few weeks to get a sense of where Gonzalez is going to land. According to the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Gonzalez will indeed go to someone in the top 10, but it’s a team that we haven’t seen him get selected by thus far in the mock draft cycle.

Kiper has the Las Vegas Raiders grabbing Gonzalez with the No. 8 pick in the draft.

In this scenario, the Raiders don’t get any of the top four quarterbacks, forcing them to go with the best prospect available. They added the solid-but-unspectacular Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency, so it’s not like they have a void under center as big as the Colts, Texans and Panthers do. They also have a veteran roster, and you could argue they should try to win now.

The player who can most help them win in 2023 is Gonzalez, who ran a blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the combine, backing up what I saw on his 2022 tape. At 6-foot-1, he has outstanding ball skills and elite recovery speed. This is a clear need area for Las Vegas.

The early run on quarterbacks will certainly impact how early Gonzalez goes in the draft, but at this point, it is fair to assume that he will find his way into the top 10, and continue the streak for the Ducks.

Seahawks pick No. 1 cornerback prospect in this 2023 NFL mock draft

While it’s a deep corner group in 2023, the best of them is Christian Gonzalez from Oregon.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll seems to prefer drafting cornerbacks late. It’s tough to blame him, considering he found both Richard Sherman and Tariq Woolen in almost the exact same spot in the fifth round. The 2023 NFL draft class is deepest at cornerback, so Carroll could try to wait around until Day 3 again to find a special talent. Then again, Seattle has been upending all of our expectations thus far in free agency and the same was the case in last year’s draft.

Perhaps it would be wise to throw out what we think we know about this front office and start expecting the unexpected. This new post-free agency mock draft by Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire has a scenario that certainly qualifies.

While it’s a deep corner group in 2023, the best of them is Christian Gonzalez from Oregon. Farrar has Seattle taking him at No. 5 overall:

“Gonzalez, a ridiculously athletic cornerback with size, aggression, and the ability to shut any receiver down at the boundary, would be an ideal fit as Carroll’s cornerback prototype, and good luck testing the outside combination of Gonzalez and Tariq Woolen in 2023 and beyond.”

After two years at Colorado, Gonzalez transferred to Oregon for the 2022 season and immediately had a breakout year. He went in with zero career interceptions but had four in 2022, plus seven pass breakups and 35 solo tackles.

On some level every prospect is a gamble. However, Gonzalez certainly has the size and athleticism to make it. At the combine he checked in at 6-foot-1, 197 pounds with 32″ arms and 9.5″ hands. He ran a 4.38 forty and posted a 41.5″ vertical and an 11’1″ broad jump.

2023 NFL draft: Commanders updated 1st-round big board

We look at potential options for the Commanders at No. 16 with after the first week of free agency.

Now that the first wave of NFL free agency is over, most NFL teams will turn their attention to next month’s 2023 NFL draft. That doesn’t mean teams will forget about free agents, but they won’t be the focus moving forward. Teams will look toward the draft to fill remaining holes before turning back to free agency to shore up the roster.

The Washington Commanders pick No. 16 overall in next month’s draft. While the Commanders added players on the offensive line and cornerback, those positions remain atop the team’s draft board heading into next month’s draft. However, by adding two offensive linemen last week, the Commanders shouldn’t need to force a pick at No. 16.

We rank some of the best options for the Commanders with their first-round pick. Keep in mind, these aren’t rankings but players who would make sense for Washington, given its needs and who could be available. So don’t expect to see Bryce Young, Will Anderson, or C.J. Stroud on this list.

There will be some players at positions Washington may not currently need, such as defensive end, tight end, linebacker, or running back, but those are lower on the list and could fall to the Commanders and be an option.

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Kevin Fielder’s Mock Draft 3.0

The NFL draft is just over a month away and @TheKevinFielder has his latest mock draft flush with trades and a surprising QB selection

For what seems like the first time, there’s clarity involving the NFL Draft.

Not only is the NFL Scouting Combine over, but free agency has brought further understanding about the direction of some teams. The Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers also helped answer some questions at the top when the two swapped draft picks in the first round.

Still, mock drafts are an imperfect science. Without access to each team’s war rooms, it’s difficult to predict what each team will do during the draft. That doesn’t mean mock drafts don’t have value, though. Mock drafts are the perfect way to discuss prospects as they relate to the team fit and help predict potential moves around the board.

As a friendly reminder, my mock drafts are not based on what I would do. Instead, they’re based on what I think NFL teams will do and how they may operate in the draft. Don’t treat these mock drafts like gospel. Instead, use them as thought experiments as we head into April.

Like my other mock drafts, this includes some trades during the first round. However, there is no compensation for these trades. I’m leaving that up to you guys, instead. Let your hearts go wild.

Naming the biggest winners from Oregon’s 2023 Pro Day

The future Pro Ducks showed out in front of NFL scouts on Tuesday. Here are our biggest winners from the 2023 Oregon Pro Day.

The Oregon Ducks 2023 Pro Day took place on Tuesday morning at the Moshofsky Center in Eugene. It was a toned down version of the NFL Combine, where 12 former Ducks took the field in front of a large group of NFL scouts to show what they can do.

Various players went through a couple of jumps, the 40-yard dash, cone drills, and on-field position drills. In the end, their afternoon of work was boiled down to a large set of numbers, and a few pages of notes written in a notebook that several scouts will take back home to their respective coaches.

The entire spectacle may seem excessive to some, but it is virtually one of the biggest job interviews that some of these players will ever have. For guys like Chase Cota, Benett Williams, and Jordan Riley, among others, what they were able to put on tape at the Pro Day may got a long way in convincing an NFL team to give them a shot with a draft pick or practice squad invite in the future.

All in all, 12 guys took the field for Oregon on Tuesday:

  • Christian Gonzalez
  • Noah Sewell
  • DJ Johnson
  • Benett Williams
  • Jordon Riley
  • Chase Cota
  • Alex Forsyth
  • TJ Bass
  • Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu
  • Ryan Walk
  • Adam Barry
  • Karsten Battles

Which of those players had the best days and likely made the best impression on the scouts who were tuned in? Here are our picks.

Oregon pro day: 31 teams check out the Ducks prospects

Oregon pro day: 31 teams check out the Ducks prospects including CB Christian Gonzalez and WR Chase Cota

The Oregon Ducks held their pro day for 12 aspiring NFL draft prospects on Tuesday. Every NFL team was represented at the Ducks’ indoor training facility except the Los Angeles Rams. Most teams had multiple representatives on hand.

The headliner for the Ducks draft class is CB Christian Gonzalez, but he opted to stand pat on his outstanding NFL Scouting Combine workout numbers. Gonzalez, a potential top-10 overall pick and strong contender to be the first defensive back selected in April’s draft, did participate in position drills. He looked good, as expected,

The other top Oregon prospect, linebacker Noah Sewell, also opted not to participate in the athletic testing outside of agility drills. Sewell did position drill work as well. The 250-pound backer was cheered on by older brother Penei, the Pro Bowl right tackle for the Detroit Lions. The younger Sewell had a rough workout in Indianapolis but elected not to try and run more at the pro day, which indicates the sluggish combine performance wasn’t a fluke. Sewell currently projects as a middle-round prospect for a team that doesn’t mind heavy, slower LBs.

Wideout Chase Cota didn’t get a combine invite, but he had himself an impressive workout. Catching passes from 2024 draft prospect Bo Nix, Cota certainly helped himself according to Ducks beat writer Jared Mack,

Cota, who measured in at 6-foot-4, put up staggering numbers for his size with a 37.5 inch vertical jump, 10-foot-6 broad jump, and a 4.50 40-yard dash. With those numbers, Cota would have ranked 24th in 40 times, 14th in vertical jump, and 20th in broad jump.

Cota, a transfer from UCLA, caught 36 passes for 497 yards and three TDs in 2022, missing three games with an injury in his one season at Oregon. He is the son of former NFL safety Chad Cota.

The other Ducks who worked out:

OL Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu

P Adam Barry

OL T.J. Bass

LS Karsten Battles

OL Alex Forsyth

LB D.J. Johnson

DT Jordon Riley

OL Ryan Walk

CB Bennett Williams

South Carolina Gamecocks pro day: Cam Smith, Zacch Pickens bulk up

Official measurements and times for all players at Oregon Ducks Pro Day

Here are all of the measurements and times for the 12 Oregon Pro Day participants on Tuesday.

One of the biggest job interviews of these young men’s lives is now over.

Now there’s nothing left to do but sit and wait for what’s to come.

The Oregon Ducks Pro Day took place on Tuesday at the Moshofsky Center in Eugene, giving 12 former players from Eugene a chance to showcase their talent and abilities to prospective NFL teams and scouts who were in attendance.

We got to see known quantities like Christian Gonzalez and Noah Sewell strut their stuff in position drills on the field, while others like Ryan Walk and Chase Cota put up some impressive numbers in the 40-yard-dash and jumps.

All in all, it was a successful day for the Ducks, and a day where we saw former Oregon great Penei Sewell in attendance, while current Oregon QB Bo Nix took part in some throwing drills for Cota.

Here are the official times that were released after the day.

Mock Draft Roundup: Where Christian Gonzalez is projected to land after NFL Combine

Good luck finding many mock drafts that have Christian Gonzalez going outside of the top 10 in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Going into the NFL Combine, you would have been hard-pressed to find many mock drafts that didn’t have Oregon Ducks’ cornerback Christian Gonzalez going somewhere in the first round, usually in the top 20 picks or so.

Now, it’s hard to find many mock drafts that don’t have Gonzalez going as a top-10 pick once the draft comes in April.

Gonzalez showed out at the combine, posting some of the most impressive numbers at his position, and proving that he is one of, if not the best cornerback available in the 2023 class. After going through all of the top mock drafts following the showcase, it’s clear that Gonzalez made himself quite a bit of money, and he will likely hear his name called early on.

Here’s a roundup of the top mock drafts in the industry, and where they have Gonzalez going.
