Wormley spent time with the Panthers last season, seeing action in five games and playing 16 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.

The Michigan product logged a seven-sack season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 but suffered a torn ACL in 2022.

Wormley, a third-round pick in 2017, returns to the franchise that drafted him.

Panthers’ updated roster following Friday’s moves

The Panthers closed the book on TE Hayden Hurst and G Justin McCray for 2023 while bringing up DL Chris Wormley from their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of moves on Friday.

First, the team placed a pair of ailing players on injured reserve—tight end Hayden Hurst (concussion) and guard Justin McCray (calf). With just four games to go and the Panthers already eliminated from playoff contention, their 2023 seasons are now officially over.

They also filled one of those spots by making an addition to their roster, signing defensive lineman Chris Wormley from the practice squad. Wormley has appeared in the team’s last three outings.

Here, following those decisions, is an updated look at the active roster:

Panthers sign Chris Wormley to active roster

The Panthers have signed DL Chris Wormley to their active roster.

On Friday, the Carolina Panthers officially placed tight end Hayden Hurst and offensive lineman Justin McCray on injured reserve, effectively ending their 2023 seasons. The moves also opened up a pair of spots on the team’s active roster, giving way to a more positive bit of news this afternoon.

In the same release, the Panthers announced they have signed defensive lineman Chris Wormley to the 53-man roster. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder, who inked on to the practice squad back on Sept. 11, has now appeared in three games this season.

Before coming over to Carolina, Wormley spent his first six NFL seasons in the AFC North—splitting his time between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over that time, the 2017 third-round pick recorded 142 combined tackles, 11.0 sacks and two forced fumbles in 80 games.

Wormley’s 2022 campaign was cut short after sustaining a torn ACL in Pittsburgh’s Week 14 contest against, ironically enough, the Ravens. He proceeded to undergo season-ending surgery and was placed on injured reserve to close up the campaign.

Week 12’s trip to Tennessee marked Wormley’s return to the field since the injury.

Panthers elevate Gabe Jackson, Chris Wormley for Week 14

New Panthers G Gabe Jackson could be making his first appearance here in 2023.

The Carolina Panthers seem to be set with their starting guards for Week 14. But that hasn’t stopped them from bringing along some extra help.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com this afternoon, the team has elevated guard Gabe Jackson for their Week 14 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. The 32-year-old veteran was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 29.

Jackson, a third-round selection from the 2014 NFL draft, has registered nine pro seasons—all between the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks. He’s made 130 starts over 131 games in his career.

Interim head coach Chris Tabor told reporters on Friday that he expects Justin McCray and undrafted rookie Nash Jensen to start at the guard positions. Jackson will provide some much-needed depth on the interior—a spot that has lost Brady Christensen, Austin Corbett and Chandler Zavala for the remainder of the season.

Carolina also elevated defensive lineman Chris Wormley, who will be making his third trip up to the roster. He played in 17 defensive snaps between Week 12 and Week 13.

Panthers roster heading into Week 13 vs. Buccaneers

Jaycee Horn, Jeremy Chinn and Yetur Gross-Matos are all expected to be back for the Panthers on Sunday.

The reinforcements have arrived!

Ok, maybe it’s a little late to talk about “reinforcements” at 1-10, but the Carolina Panthers brought back a handful of key players on Saturday.

The team announced they have activated cornerback Jaycee Horn, safety Jeremy Chinn and outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos—all of whom are expected to play in today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carolina also called upon a pair of practice squad members for the NFC South clash. Guard Justin McCray and defensive lineman Chris Wormley, who will be making his second straight trip up, were elevated as well.

So, let’s take a look at the Panthers roster heading into the Week 13 matchup:

Panthers elevate 2 players for Week 13 game vs. Buccaneers

In addition to getting a trio of key defenders back, the Panthers elevated a pair of linemen for their Week 13 visit to see the Buccaneers.

As expected, the Carolina Panthers officially activated a trio of key defenders on Saturday—cornerback Jaycee Horn, safety Jeremy Chinn and outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos. But they weren’t the only players who got called on this afternoon.

The Panthers also announced that they’ve elevated two players from their practice squad—offensive lineman Justin McCray and defensive lineman Chris Wormley—for Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both are standard elevations.

McCray, a free-agent signee from this past spring, has spent the much of the campaign as a member of the practice squad. He’s appeared in two games thus far, in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints and in Week 6 against the Miami Dolphins—where he recorded four snaps at right guard.

With the Panthers missing Brady Christensen, Austin Corbett and Chandler Zavala for the remainder of the season, McCray will serve as some much-needed depth for the interior offensive line.

Wormley will be making his second consecutive trip up to the game-day roster. Week 12 marked his return to the NFL field after tearing his ACL last season.

Panthers elevating Lamar Jackson, Chris Wormley for Week 12

The Panthers have elevated CB Lamar Jackson and DL Chris Wormley for their Week 12 matchup against the Titans.

With both Jaycee Horn and CJ Henderson unlikely to suit up in Nashville tomorrow afternoon, the Carolina Panthers have called on a familiar name . . . sorta.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Saturday, the team has brought up cornerback (not quarterback) Lamar Jackson and defensive lineman Chris Wormley from the practice squad. Both are standard elevations for their Week 12 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Jackson will provide some depth as Horn (hamstring) and Henderson (concussion) have been ruled as doubtful for the contest. The 6-foot-2, 208-pounder, who may be in line to make his 2023 debut, signed to Carolina’s practice back on Sept. 12 after spending the summer with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The same could go for Wormley, who hasn’t played an NFL down since sustaining an ACL tear last season. A former third-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens, Wormley has recorded 142 combined tackles and 11.0 sacks over 80 career games.

Panthers add 2 players to practice squad on Monday

The Panthers have added DL Chris Wormley and CB Dicaprio Bootle to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers did some maneuvering on Monday, which included bumping up offensive tackle David Sharpe to the active roster. As a result, the practice squad was left with a few spots to fill—two of which would go to a couple of defenders.

As announced by the team this afternoon, defensive lineman Chris Wormley and cornerback Dicaprio Bootle have been officially signed to the practice squad.

Wormley, who visited with the Panthers one week ago, was a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens back in 2017. A 2016 Second-team All-American selection, the University of Michigan standout would play three seasons in Baltimore—totaling 54 tackles and 2.5 sacks over 30 games.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder was then traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March of 2020. Before sustaining a season-ending ACL tear last year, Wormley recorded 16 starts, 88 tackles and 8.5 sacks for the Steelers between 2020 and 2022.

Bootle, a University of Nebraska product, broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. He’s appeared in seven games over his two pro campaigns.

Carolina, additionally, released defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad. The group, which is now at 15 players, is left with one vacancy.
