Ohio State seems to have already found its replacement for offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien

That was quick for Day to find a replacement for O’Brien

It didn’t take long for Ohio State head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] to find a replacement for [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag], who earlier on Friday reportedly was taking the head coaching position at Boston College.

In less than an hour after the news broke that O’Brien was moving on, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman broke the story that UCLA head coach [autotag]Chip Kelly[/autotag] would be taking over the vacant spot.

Kelly was in talks with NFL teams as well, as it was fairly clear that his time in Los Angeles was coming to a close. The door appears to be closed now, as Day reunites with his former offensive coordinator when he was playing quarterback for New Hampshire.

The hire falls in line with what Day was looking for out of his offensive coordinator, someone who has a lot of play-calling experience. Kelly has had stints at the head coach at Oregon and UCLA while also having the same role in the NFL with Philadelphia and San Francisco. Having a previous relationship surely helped the two get back together as well.

Social media reacts as Chip Kelly leaves UCLA for Ohio State OC job

Social media is having a field day as Chip Kelly leaves UCLA.

It has been a whirlwind of a week for fans of UCLA football.

After coaching changes, coaching reassignments, and a highly-rated recruit choosing Nebraska over the Bruins, there has been quite a lot to take in. But following Bill O’Brien’s decision to leave Ohio State to take the Boston College head coaching position, a vacancy emerged for the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator job.

Shortly after, it was announced that Chip Kelly is leaving UCLA and is expected to be the new OC at Ohio State.

After striking out in the NFL coordinator search, Kelly turns to an Ohio State team rich in history but lacking in success since the departure of Urban Meyer. Under head coach Ryan Day, the Buckeyes are an impressive 56-8 but have only won two bowl games and lost to rival Michigan now three years straight.

Is Kelly the answer to their woes? Here is what social media thinks of the move.

Report: P.J. Fleck may leave Minnesota for another Big Ten job

This would be hilarious…

The coaching carousel chairs never seem to stop turning in college football. It’s Feb. 9, yet coaches are taking other jobs as if its the middle of bowl season.

The changes on Friday are significant to Wisconsin and the rest of the Big Ten landscape. First, Ohio State offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien took the Boston College opening. Then, it was reported that current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is leaving to take the Ohio State OC job.

The moves leave UCLA without a head coach. That prompted Stadium’s Brett McMurphy to offer:”Expect Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck among UCLA’s top candidates.”

Fleck made headlines early at Minnesota, peaking with an 11-2 2019 season. The program went south in 2023 as the Gophers went 6-7 and failed again to win a very winnable Big Ten West.

Minnesota can’t do much better than Fleck given its place in the college football ecosystem, but perhaps the veteran head coach is looking for a fresh start.

From a Wisconsin perspective, it would be a hilarious move to see happen. Fleck would remain in the conference and still play the Badgers, but this time do so in Los Angeles — a place it feels like he would fit in perfectly.

Duck fans, college football world reacts to news that Chip Kelly will take job at Ohio State

Oregon Duck fans had some strong reactions to the news that former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly would be leaving to be the OC at Ohio State.

It looks like the coaching carousel in the world of college sports will never end, doesn’t it?

While most head coaching jobs have been filled across the nation, another major one opened up on Friday morning with the news that UCLA Bruins’ head coach Chip Kelly would be leaving to become the new offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

[lawrence-related id=57181]

Yes, that is a now inter-conference move from HC down to OC, which may be the first of its kind in the history of college football.

This is a story that impacts Oregon Duck fans in numerous ways. Firstly, Kelly is a former Ducks’ head coach who had massive success with the team last decade. The move also destabilizes one of their conference opponents, while providing a huge boost to arguably one of their biggest new conference rivals.

As you would expect, Duck fans had some reactions to the news on Friday morning.

Decorated Big Ten head coach leaves for Ohio State offensive coordinator job

Decorated Big Ten head coach leaves for Ohio State offensive coordinator job

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is leaving to take the vacant offensive coordinator job at Ohio State, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

This move takes place after a myriad of dominoes fell throughout the offseason. First, Patriots offensive coordinator and former Texans and Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien left the NFL to take the Ohio State offensive coordinator job. Then, Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley surprisingly jumped to the NFL to take the Green Bay Packers vacant defensive coordinator job. Finally, O’Brien jumped from Ohio State to Boston College to take its vacancy.

This left Ohio State without an offensive coordinator entering spring practice. Enter Kelly, who was almost fired from UCLA last year and was clearly on thin ice entering 2024. He had previously flirted with several NFL coordinator jobs before now landing this one — arguably one of the best coordinator jobs in the country.

Kelly is an accomplished coach with a stellar run at Oregon from 2009-2012, a tumultuous regime with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-2015, one year in San Francisco with the 49ers and a solid run at UCLA from 2018-2023.

It is an interesting hire for Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, who reportedly is now taking a step back from calling the offensive side of the ball. Day needs a splash, especially after Michigan’s three straight conference titles and recent National Championship.

Kelly feels like a potential splash-type hire.

Report: Chip Kelly to leave UCLA to become offensive coordinator at Ohio State

Chip Kelly finally got that coordinator spot he seemed to want, just didn’t know it would be with a fellow Big Ten school.

Another sitting head coach is leaving his post to become an assistant at another school. This time it doesn’t involve a Group of Five school but Chip Kelly leaving one Big Ten school for another.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Kelly will leave UCLA as the head coach to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Current Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day played for Chip Kelly at the University of New Hampshire.

Less than 48 hours since National Signing Day came to a close, the UCLA Bruins will be on the hunt for a new head coach. Kelly on the other hand will inherit an offense full of top-tier talent and five-star wide receivers.

It seemed that Kelly was interested in leaving UCLA at every turn. He was interested in returning to the NFL as a coordinator but missed out on a few opportunities. With Bill O’Brien leaving for Boston College per reports, this opened a spot with Ohio State.

UCLA is set to join the Big Ten as of Jul. 1, 2024, but the Bruins are not on the Buckeyes schedule next season. If they are to face off with Kelly on the opposite sideline, it would have to come in the Big Ten title game.

UCLA is now in the unenviable position of looking for a head coach with spring football just months away.

Report: Former UCLA HC Chip Kelly to take job at OC for Ohio State Buckeyes

Former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is expected to be named as the next offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

In the history of college football, have we ever seen the head coach of a Power 5 school step down to take the coordinator job at another Power 5 school in the same conference?

It may be that former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly made history in that sense on Friday morning, with reports surfacing that the former Oregon Ducks head coach would be leaving to take over as the next offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

This move within the Big Ten is certainly a big one, and now leaves the Bruins scrambling to find a new coach just a few months before they enter a new conference, with almost everyone already hired in this coaching cycle.

This is a move that is impactful for the Oregon Ducks since it destabilizes one of their conference foes while also providing a major boost for on of their new rivals in the Buckeyes.

We will see over the coming days and weeks how the Bruins are able to bounce back and put together a future while trying to hold onto their best assets and stave away the transfer portal.

Could Ryan Grubb still leave for Seahawks despite Alabama comments?

According to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune, Grubb’s comments do not officially eliminate him from consideration as Seattle’s OC.

The Seahawks are the only team in the NFL right now that doesn’t have an offensive coordinator on-staff. Seattle has been reported to be interested in several different candidates, including former Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb – who’s followed former Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama… or has he? Chip Kelly is the biggest name in the bunch, but Grubb is by far the most popular candidate to lead Mike Macdonald’s offense.

However hilarious it might be, the chances that Grubb might jump ship back to Seattle took a serious hit on Wednesday afternon when he told an Alabama crowd that he’s their new offensive coordinator.

Then again, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t take the Seahawks job. According to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune, Grubb’s comments do not officially eliminate him from consideration as Seattle’s OC.

In related news, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is officially out of the running for the job – he’s been given an assistant head coach promotion after getting blocked from interviewing for Seattle’s opening.

More as it comes.

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly interviews for Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator job

Chip Kelly wants out of UCLA. Will another NFL or college team hire him?

It seems obvious by now: Chip Kelly is tired of the recruiting game. He just wants to call plays for an offense in the NFL or in college. Being the leader of a college football program is something he no longer seems to relish, at least at UCLA.

Kelly is, according to NFL insiders, making contact with NFL teams. He is doing the chasing, not the NFL teams themselves. The latest team he is pursuing for a possible NFL offensive coordinator job: the Seattle Seahawks under new head coach Mike Macdonald.

UCLA Wire has more:

“The UCLA Bruins head coach reportedly interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders for their OC job and was mentioned as a candidate for the Washington Commanders opening before Kliff Kingsbury was hired.

“Now, it turns out Kelly is interviewing for the Seattle Seahawks OC job, per a report from Benjamin Solak of The Ringer. In Solak’s tweet, he put Oregon HC but later corrected it in the reply.

“Kelly’s name again is included in an NFL OC opening, and it might be a matter of time before he heads back to the pros. The Seahawks were thought to be targeting Alabama OC Ryan Grubb, who followed Kalen DeBoer from Washington.”

The other plot point to watch with Chip Kelly: Will Bill O’Brien leave his spot as Ohio State offensive coordinator to take the head coaching job at Boston College? If so, Kelly could become Ohio State offensive coordinator. The Buckeyes have other ace recruiters on staff. Kelly would not be expected to do a lot of recruiting if hired by Ryan Day.

UCLA fans want Kelly to go, but the Bruins will likely have a hard time finding a quality coach this late in the carousel cycle. They’re in a tough spot.

Such a shame, right? Maybe they should have fired Chip in November when they had the chance.

Seahawks interviewed Chip Kelly for offensive coordinator job

According to Ben Solak, the team interviewed UCLA head coach Chip Kelly for the open offensive coordinator job.

New Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is currently working on putting together his first staff in Seattle. So far we have received word of the team hiring Leslie Frazier as assistant head coach, Jay Harbaugh as special teams coordinator and Kirk Olivadotti as linebackers coach.

The most-important hire that Macdonald will be making in the coming days though is his offensive coordinator. So far we have only received reports of a couple of potential candidates, but last night a new contender stepped into the ring. According to Ben Solak, the team interviewed UCLA head coach Chip Kelly for the open offensive coordinator job.

Finding someone who has experience calling plays at this level is probably the right way to go for Macdonald, who intends to call defensive plays for now.

Kelly fits that bill just right. In addition to building up programs at Oregon and UCLA, he’s also been the head coach of the Eagles and the 49ers. His fast-paced offenses in Philadelphia had the league flummoxed for at least one season – when he and a loaded skill group made a star out of Nick Foles back in 2013. The competition eventually caught up though and Kelly didn’t stick around much longer. Still, Kelly is renowned for being one of the top offensive minds in the business.

Other candidates who the Seahawks are reported to be interested in include Alabama OC Ryan Grubb, Lions assistant Tanner Engstrand and Giants OC Mike Kafka, but he was blocked from interviewing with Seattle.

With the Saints reportedly hiring Klint Kubiak, the Seahawks are now the only team left without an OC.
