Ohio State seems to have already found its replacement for offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien

That was quick for Day to find a replacement for O’Brien

It didn’t take long for Ohio State head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] to find a replacement for [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag], who earlier on Friday reportedly was taking the head coaching position at Boston College.

In less than an hour after the news broke that O’Brien was moving on, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman broke the story that UCLA head coach [autotag]Chip Kelly[/autotag] would be taking over the vacant spot.

Kelly was in talks with NFL teams as well, as it was fairly clear that his time in Los Angeles was coming to a close. The door appears to be closed now, as Day reunites with his former offensive coordinator when he was playing quarterback for New Hampshire.

The hire falls in line with what Day was looking for out of his offensive coordinator, someone who has a lot of play-calling experience. Kelly has had stints at the head coach at Oregon and UCLA while also having the same role in the NFL with Philadelphia and San Francisco. Having a previous relationship surely helped the two get back together as well.

Bill O’Brien reportedly leaving Ohio State after an extremely short tenure

Is this surprising that O’Brien might be leaving before even really beginning? #GoBucks

The writing on the wall for recently hired Ohio State offensive coordinator [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag] to return home to the Boston area and become Boston College’s next head coach has been going on for over a week now.

All the rumors seem to have come to fruition on Friday morning, as ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported that O’Brien was working with BC to become its next leader. Part of the reasoning was to be able to get better care for his son.

As for the Buckeyes, it seems like this is the first time all offseason that they have received bad news, as O’Brien will never coach a game in Columbus. It’s back to the drawing board for [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag], who recently said that he would give up his play-calling duties for the right fit at offensive coordinator.

Since its getting later in the coaching carousel, it may be hard for Day to find another elite choice as his offensive coordinator. With all the talent that Ohio State is returning, the hope might be to lure someone who already has a job with another team to Columbus.

Takeaways after Ohio State head coach Ryan Day speaks with media on signing day

The Buckeye boss had plenty to say during his hour long media session. #GoBucks

For as much as we miss the drama on the first Wednesday of February for the traditional national signing day in college football, coaches like Ohio State head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] look much more relieved to speak with the media.

The Buckeye boss went to the podium for over an hour, and he spoke on many different subjects, not just his one signee of the day, defensive end, Dominic Kirks.

There were many great questions about what is going on with the Ohio State football program that Day answered, some of them giving great insight on what to expect during the 2024 season and beyond. Find out below my biggest takeaways from what the Ohio State head coach said during his media session.

Report: Ohio State football likely to lose offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien

Not the best news, but family first

It looked like Ohio State football and head coach Ryan Day had hit a home run with his new offensive coordinator[autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag] .

Unfortunately, the coaching veteran likely won’t make his stay in Columbus very long as the Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald is reporting that O’Brien could soon take over the Boston College program since former Buckeye defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, left the position open to join the Green Bay Packers.

This clearly isn’t the best situation for the Buckeyes, as multiple reports had come out that O’Brien was meshing very well with the players and coaches inside the program. The Boston native would return home, but the most important aspect of this decision is about his son, Jack.

A rare brain condition, which causes daily seizures, would give Jack the best possible medical care in the Boston area. You can’t help but understand the situation, as O’Brien’s move would be what is best for his family if the report is correct.

Could Ohio State lose Bill O’Brien before he even coaches one game?

This wouldn’t be great for the Buckeyes

Ohio State football made a home run hire this offseason when it named [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag] as its new offensive coordinator.

As news hit that former Buckeye defensive coordinator and Boston College head coach, Jeff Hafley, was leaving to become the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, the wheels started moving.

There is now potential that O’Brien could return home to Boston and become the new BC head coach according to a report by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman. He was listed as one of the potential candidates to take over the program, which would clearly be a big hit for the Ohio State offense if that come to fruition.

Feldman’s rationale is all about the fact that O’Brien “flirted with the BC job the last time it opened.” He went on to say that the “timing could be tough as he just accepted the Ohio State OC job, but this one could be intriguing for him on some levels.

Hopefully it’s just a rumor, as O’Brien has gotten rave reviews during his short tenure so far in Columbus.

Ohio State football officially announces the hiring of Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator

It’s official. How do you feel about this hire? #GoBucks

News surfaced on Thursday via multiple outlets that former college and NFL head coach Bill O’Brien was set to be announced as the Ohio State football program’s new offensive coordinator. It didn’t take long for that news to become official on Friday.

OSU announced the hiring of O’Brien as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in a statement just a day after ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the story. The announcement came from Ryan Day through an Ohio State spokesman.

“I am extremely pleased to be able to add Bill O’Brien to our coaching staff,” Day said in the statement. “He brings with him a wealth of knowledge – and a tremendous amount of success – at both the NFL and collegiate levels. He is an excellent and experienced offensive coach who has run NFL and Power 5 programs and developed some truly elite players throughout his career. He’ll be an excellent teacher and recruiter for us, and he absolutely strengthens our staff.”

Also of note is the news that Brian Hartline will still be the co-offensive coordinator, and that Corey Dennis will move to a analyst position on the staff. That is in contrast to several reports that the son-in-law of Urban Meyer would part ways with the program.

O’Brien brings a wealth of experience with him. He was as of most recently the New England Patriots offensive coordinator, but was a former college head coach with Penn State, and had a stint in the NFL with the Houston Texans as their head coach as well. He is a 34-year coaching veteran, and even had a stop at Alabama under Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator.

Now, the Massachusetts native will head back to the Big Ten to try and allow Ohio State’s head coach to have more of a CEO approach and get the Buckeyes back to the top of the conference and beyond.

As any further news and developments occur in the offseason with Day’s coaching staff we’ll be sure to have the details for you.

Report: Ohio State has found its next offensive coordinator

How do you feel about this? #GoBucks

It has been one of the worst kept secrets in college football, Ohio State was looking to add an offensive coordinator to its coaching staff.

Head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] has spoken on the subject, but nothing had come to fruition until Thursday evening. ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that the Buckeyes will hire [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag] away from the New England Patriots for the position.

The play-calling and coaching experience is abundant with O’Brien, as he’s coached multiple big time quarterbacks like Bryce Young, Tom Brady, and Deshaun Watson. Aside from calling plays for the Pats, his resume also includes stops at Alabama as their offensive coordinator and head coaching stops with Penn State and the Houston Texans.

Thamel also reports that O’Brien will most likely call plays, taking away from a duty Day has done since becoming the head coach. On first impression, it’s a great hire considering the top level quarterbacks he’s coached in the past. Also, having worked with Bill Belichick and Nick Saban is a big time feather in his cap.

REPORT: Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees emerging as top Alabama candidate

Could the Crimson Tide be poaching Rees from the Irish?

The off-season just isn’t about recruiting and getting your team prepped for next season, for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] it’s turning out to be their effort to keep one of their coaches. There is a report that Irish offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] is now being looked at by [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama as their next offensive coordinator.

The Crimson Tide lost [autotag]Bill O’Brien[/autotag] to the NFL and they have been unsuccessful in their search for a replacement. According to ESPN’s [autotag]Chris Low[/autotag], Rees is expected to be at Tuscaloosa today to discuss the job with Saban.

This would be a loss for the Irish, especially considering Rees made the proper adjustments to the offense after early season struggles after the injury to quarterback [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag].

Georgia 33, Alabama 18: College Football Playoff National Championship 5 Things That Matter

Prediction: Georgia 26, Alabama 23
Line: Georgia -2.5, o/u: 52.5
CFN Georgia vs Alabama Preview

Now that the dust has settled after Georgia beat Alabama for the College Football Playoff National Championship – and after getting a shot to watch the game again after spending a fun night in a raucous and very cold Lucas Oil Stadium – here are the 5 main takeaways with 24 hours to let it all sink in.

5. Georgia was the team of 2021

Yeah, of course – it won the national championship. Losing the SEC Championship – as it turned out – didn’t matter, and it might have been just what the Dawgs needed.

You want focus? LB Nakobe Dean was so locked in on Alabama that he ended up wearing a Tide national championship hat after it was all over.

Obviously that was a mistake, but the loss in Atlanta refocused the effort. Any possibility of overconfidence was gone, the mission was to take down Bama – of course it was going to be Georgia-Alabama in the national championship – and this veteran team full of superstar talent had the laser focus needed to pull this off.

2021 Georgia was the team of the year, just like 2020 Alabama was the team of the year, just like LSU owned the 2019 season.

Georgia’s defense stopped Clemson to start the season – getting the only touchdown of the game on a pick six – and it ended the season with a dramatic pick six.

2021 Alabama might have rented the top spot for several weeks, but it was Georgia’s turn thanks to that D that helped bail out …

Georgia – Alabama National Championship 5 Thoughts
4. Stetson Bennett’s one big drive
3. Jameson William’s injury mattered
2. Bill O’Brien was fine
1. The talent level, oh, the talent level
National Championship Game Thoughts

NEXT: Stetson Bennett wasn’t good until he absolutely had to be
