Raiders waive TE OJ Howard, re-sign QB Chase Garbers

TE OJ Howard among 3 waived as Raiders bring back QB Chase Garbers

Apparently to ring in the first day in pads, the Raiders made a string of moves. The team waived several players today including tight end OJ Howard.

Howard was one of the team’s early free agent signings this offseason and was expected to be the third tight end on the roster behind Michael Mayer and Austin Hooper. So, it’s a bit of a surprise that he was released.

In fact, the Raiders had an in-house interview with Howard not two days ago with the tweet reading that Howard is “ready to show out the Silver and Black.”

So, yeah, this is awkward. Maybe they meant ‘ready to be shown out’?

In an apparent corresponding move, the quarterback Chase Garbers has been re-signed by the team according to his agent.

Previous reports had the Raiders signing former Chiefs LB Darius Harris, which means there should be one more addition either not yet official or coming down the pike. We’ll keep you updated.

Raiders bring back DT Kyle Peko, waive QB Chase Garbers

Raiders bring back DT Kyle Peko, waive QB Chase Garbers, CB Isiah Brown

Back for another training camp with the Raiders is Kyle Peko. The veteran defensive tackle spent last offseason with the Raiders before landing on the team’s practice squad. He was then signed to the active roster late in the season.

All told he appeared in eight games last season for the Raiders, collecting 11 combined tackles.

The 30-year-old enters his sixth NFL season after having previously spent time with the Broncos, Bills, and Titans. He has appeared in 28 career games with three starts.

With the return of Peko the team also announced the cuts of quarterback Chase Garbers and cornerback Isiah Brown.

What condition the position is in: Assessing Raiders level of need at QB ahead of free agency

We assess the condition at quarterback for the Raiders with free agency weeks away

We are exactly three weeks from the start of the free agent negotiating period for the NFL. That’s when those players headed for the free agent market may begin negotiating deals with other teams.

In the leadup to that, we take a look at where the Raiders stand at each position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.

Beginning with the most important one: Quarterback

Returning starter: None

Depth: Chase Garbers
Free agents: Jarrett Stidham

Notes: Derek Carr was benched and released following one of his worst seasons as a pro. After nine years, the Raiders decided enough was enough. He was cut before $40 million of his contract could become guaranteed.

Stidham stepped in and for one game looked pretty good. He clearly knows the system, but he was also facing a team that had no tape on him whatsoever. He came back to earth in the finale against the Chiefs.

Garbers is a camp body level QB who only reached the active roster when Carr was made inactive.

Condition: Critical

Why: They literally have no starter at the most important position on the team. Whether via free agency, a trade, or through the draft, adding a QB (or two) will be necessary. In addition, the Raiders should seriously consider re-signing Stidham if for no other reason than to have an insurance plan in place.

Breaking: Raiders will start Jarrett Stidham over Derek Carr remainder of season

Josh McDaniels announces Jarrett Stidham will be the Raiders starter the remainder of season

With two games left in the season the Raiders have pulled the trigger and benched Derek Carr in favor of Jarrett Stidham.

There are several factors here that go into a decision like this.

One is how poorly Derek Carr has been playing of late. Something Josh McDaniels addressed after the loss to the Steelers.

Another is the fact that the Raiders look to be all but officially out of the playoffs and looking toward the offseason and the draft.

Additionally — and perhaps especially — is the contract situation with regard to Carr.

The team has a decision to make on whether to keep him after this season. That decision is taken out of their hands should Carr be injured over the final two games.

Three days after the Super Bowl (3rd day of the waiver period), Carr’s $32.9 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. That salary is also guaranteed for injury.

Josh McDaniels added that Chase Garbers will be the backup for Jarrett Stidham which means Carr will be inactive and will not play regardless of how things go with Stidham.

Big Ten Bowl Impact: Illinois vs California

We look back on the Redbox Bowl game between Illinois and California and see how it impacted both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

With the 2019 college football season officially in the books, it’s time to look back on how the Big Ten did in bowl games.

As we go through all the bowls, in no particular order, we will focus on two main things:

1. How did the bowl performance end the 2019 season? Was it a fitting end or a poor performance, etc.
2. What impact, if any, will it have on the 2020 season.

2019 Redbox Bowl: Illinois vs California

The matchup

Like Indiana and Michigan, Illinois came into this game as an underdog. The Illini had a great season to get to six wins, and their reward was a talented but inconsistent Cal team. Cal was a very good team with Chase Garbers at the helm, but the Golden Bears struggled without him. Garbers was back for this game, which was good news for the Bears.

What went right

The first quarter was a solid one for Illinois. After an opening drive ended in a field goal, the Illini responded to a Cal touchdown with a 15-play touchdown drive of their own. Cal’s advantages in this game were obvious from the outset, but Illinois managed to mask it in the first quarter with a good offensive game plan that was well-executed.

What went wrong

Basically everything else after that. Garbers and the offense weren’t unstoppable, but Illinois couldn’t really get stops. The offense wasn’t explosive, but it did a great job of extending drives and keeping the Illinois defense on the field.

Illinois played well enough throughout the game to possibly keep it close, but the talent disparity was too much to overcome at the level that the Illini did play. It wasn’t a particularly exciting or compelling game, but it was definitely better than last season’s Redbox Bowl disaster.

California at Stanford odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s California Golden Bears at Stanford Cardinal sports betting odds and lines, with college football picks and best bets.

The California Golden Bears (5-5, 2-5, Pac-12 North) and Stanford Cardinal (4-6, 3-5) battle in the ‘Big Game.’ Each side can either knock the other from bowl contention or seriously hamper their rival’s efforts. We analyze the California-Stanford odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

California at Stanford: Three things you need to know

1. Cal RB Christopher Brown Jr., the team’s leader on the ground, is questionable due to a head injury. He joins starting QB Chase Garbers (shoulder) on the injury report. The starter was knocked from last week’s game after aggravating his shoulder injury. If Garbers cannot go, QB Devon Modster will take back over.

2. Whomever starts for Cal will see a banged-up secondary for the Cardinal. CBs Treyjohn Butler (undisclosed) and Obi Eboh (undisclosed) are questionable, while CB Paulson Adebo (undisclosed) and S Malik Antoine (undisclosed) are out.

3. Even with a healthy secondary, Stanford’s Achilles’ heel has been its pass coverage, as the Cardinal are 119th in the nation with 281.4 passing yards allowed.

Prediction

California 34, Stanford 23

Moneyline (ML)

CALIFORNIA (+105) is worth a look as a small road underdog. With or without Brown and/or Garbers, the Golden Bears showed their depth last week with RB DeShawn Collins stepping in for a career-high 103 rushing yards. Modster has plenty of experience running the offense, too, and he might be effective with Stanford (-129) so banged up defensively.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on California to win would return a profit of $10.50.

Against the Spread (ATS)

CALIFORNIA (+2.5, -115) is a decent play if you feel the game will be decided by less than two points. Hey, it worked for me in the NC State-Georgia Tech game Thursday night, as I cashed with the Wolfpack (+2.5) whereas I would’ve lost on the moneyline. That’s a rarity, though. If you’re feeling the Bears, the better value is the ML.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER (39.5, -110) is the play. Sure, it’s a rivalry game, and there will be a lot of hitting early on, but I am not sure Stanford has the horses to keep Cal from moving all over the field. The defense hasn’t been great even when healthy. It won’t take much to hit the Over in this one, and it has cashed three of the past four for the Cardinal, and nine of the past 13 inside the conference. For Cal, it’s a 2-0 over run after a spate of Unders in October.

USC at California odds: Trojans look to stay hot at Berkeley

Previewing Saturday’s USC Trojans at Cal Golden Bears college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The USC Trojans (6-4, 5-2 Pac-12 South) and California Golden Bears (5-4, 2-4 North) will look horns in Berkeley Saturday night at 11 p.m. ET.

We analyze the USC-California odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

USC at California: Three things you need to know

1. California opened the season 4-0 SU/2-2 ATS, and spent time in the Top 25 rankings before tumbling out. The Bears followed that start with an 0-4 SU/1-3 ATS skid before winning outright at 8.5-point dogs at home to Washington State last week.

2. Sophomore QB Chase Garbers (shoulder) was knocked out of the Arizona State game Sept. 27, which coincided with the Bears’ first loss of the season. He has been cleared and the dual-threat signal caller is expected to start.

3. The Trojans are just 16-33-2 ATS across their past 51 road tilts, but they’re 6-1 ATS in the past seven trips to Berkeley and 10-4 ATS in the past 14 meetings overall against Cal.

Prediction

USC 26, California 23

Moneyline (ML)

USC (-189) still has legit hope at appearing in the Pac-12 title game, but it cannot afford any slip-ups. Normally I am not comfortable with this kind of juice on the moneyline, but the return of QB Garbers should mean a close game, and I actually like the ML better than playing the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on USC to win would return a profit of $5.30.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Oh, that hook! I dislike playing games at 3.5 or 7.5. It’s just a personal preference of mine unless I really love the game. Here, I don’t feel USC that much on the road. USC (-3.5, -110) is going to be in a dogfight with California (+3.5, -110), therefore I like the moneyline better here, especially if Garbers is a little rusty in his return.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER (47.5) is worth going ever so lightly, although my preference would be to skip altogether. Cal’s offense has been moribund for most of the season, with or without Garbers. USC has some nice skill position players that can house it every time they touch the ball, though. This won’t be a defensive slog, but won’t be a slam-dunk Over play, either.
