Comparing Georgia’s 2019 roster to NFL Combine measurements

Does the official Georgia Bulldog roster fib about the size of players?

Several Georgia Bulldogs received their NFL Combine measurements a few weeks ago, but how do those compare to how they’re listed on the 2019 University of Georgia roster? There’s always been the theory that college football teams exaggerate the size of certain players.

It certainly holds true in some cases. For example, the NBA recently cracked down on teams who were listing their players at taller heights.

It must be noted that these players could have gained or lost weight ahead of the 2020 NFL Combine, but for the most part it will tell fan show big and tall UGA players are and if the roster is fibbing.

Quarterback Jake Fromm:

UGA roster: 6’2″, 220 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1 7/8″, 219 LBS

Running Back D’Andre Swift:

UGA Roster: 5’9″, 215 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’8 1/4″, 212 LBS

Running Back Brian Herrien:

UGA Roster: 6’0″, 210 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’11 1/8″, 209 LBS

Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship:

UGA Roster: 6’1″, 191 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1″, 190 LBS

Left Tackle Andrew Thomas:

The verdict? Georgia isn’t significantly fibbing about the size of players. UGA is more likely to be adjusting the heights, but not by more than an inch. The NFL Combine uses more precise height measurements than UGA’s roster.

Charlie Woerner runs 40 yard dash at NFL Combine

Former UGA tight end Charlie Woerner ran his official NFL Combine 40-yard-dash this Thursday.

The 6’5″ 245lb Woerner ran an impressive time for a tight end of his size.

Woerner clocked in for an official second time of 4.78 seconds.

Woerner then moved to the “over the shoulder” drill and blocking sled, in which he performed very well, according to sources.

Other tight ends clocked between 4.66 and 4.96, placing Woerner right in the middle of the mix.  Woerner also had an impressive bench press performance at 21 reps, giving him a very solid day overall.

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Charlie Woerner finished tied for fourth among tight ends at the NFL Combine.

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Charlie Woerner didn’t put up monster numbers during his time in Athens. Woerner waited for his time and ended up starting as a senior.

Woerner, who never caught more than eleven passes in one season, is more of a blocking tight end. He was often an unsung hero in UGA’s elite rushing attack.

Woerner put up 21 repetitions on the bench press to finish tied for fourth among all tight ends. Not too shabby:

Woerner will find his way onto an NFL roster with his ability to block. NFL teams covet a third tight end who is more of a blocker. Woerner will be able to fill out that role in the NFL.

Arguably the best story about Woerner is he didn’t have a touchdown until his final career regular season game against Georgia Tech. Woerner deserved this one:

“I definitely don’t feel like I have enough tape out there catching balls. So it’s definitely something to go out and prove that I can do.”

The tight end is one of ten former Dawgs invited to appear before NFL scouts prior to the league’s 2020 draft.

Answering media members at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Woerner spent a near majority of his public interview singing the praises of his fellow Bulldogs invited to the combine.

First mentioned was tailback D’Andre Swift:

“D’Andre is a great player. I think he’s going to do really well in the NFL. He had a really good three years at Georgia. I wish all the best for him.”

Next, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas:

“I saw Andrew grow a ton, man. When he came in as a freshman, I’d never seen a freshman more ready to play and help out a team.”

Thomas, projected by some as the top offensive tackle prospect in this year’s NFL Draft, received a glowing review from his former teammate.

“As a freshman and to his junior year, he grew a ton. He got stronger and he really understood the game more. It was fun to play with him, that’s for sure.”

Woerner continued:

“To put Andrew out there [as starting left tackle] as a freshman and for him to do what he did in three years at Georgia…we trusted Andrew.”

Woerner’s former collegiate quarterbacks and fellow combine invitees Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason, both of whom declared early for 2020’s NFL Draft, are right-handed. Referring to protecting a righty quarterback’s blindside, he noted that “left tackle is one of the most important positions on the offense.”

On Jake Fromm:

“Jake’s a competitor, man. He’s going to do whatever it takes to win a football game. He’s going to be one of the hardest working guys on the team for sure. He’s going to push everyone around him to be the best.”

Woerner will participate in drills at the NFL Combine on Thursday, February 27 alongside all invited tight ends, wide receivers and quarterbacks, including fellow Georgia alumni Jake Fromm and Lawrence Cager.

Jake Fromm

Georgia’s Jake Fromm has received his 2020 NFL Combine measurements. Fromm’s hand size, which is under nine inches, is somewhat concerning. Nine inches is considered the minimum hand size for an NFL quarterback.

Here’s how both Jake Fromm and Washington Huskies QB Jacob Eason measured at the combine:

Ultimately, hand size doesn’t have much correlation with cold weather performance and fumbles, so it shouldn’t drop Fromm too far. That being said, Fromm doesn’t have the measurables of the other elite quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

LSU’s Joe Burrow did have nine inch hands as well. He’ll still be the first pick of the NFL Draft. One-eighth of an inch shouldn’t make too much of a difference for UGA’s Jake Fromm.

Georgia’s Charlie Woerner praises former teammate Mecole Hardman

Woerner and Hardman were both teammates and North Georgia natives.

As the 2020 NFL Combine gets underway in Indianapolis, Indiana prospects are answering questions from the media. The podium barrage of questions generally ranges from the player’s expectations heading into the Combine drills to thoughts on current NFL personnel on which they have a unique connection.

Georgia University’s Charlie Woerner enters this year’s Combine after four seasons as the school’s reliable tight end. Woerner is known primarily for his blocking ability at the position but will look to prove his ability as a receiver at the NFL scouting combine. He answered questions about a former teammate with the Bulldogs who has plenty of experience catching the ball. That player was Chiefs Pro Bowl receiver and Super Bowl LIV champion Mecole Hardman.

Woerner spoke to Chiefs Wire contributor Ed Easton Jr. during his podium session.

“I see he’s doing well, I’m really happy for him,” Woerner said. “I see that he had a great season with the Chiefs and ended up getting a ring, so I’m super happy for him. He lived right down the road from me about 45 minutes away in a small town just like me. Super happy for him kid from North Georgia going out there and doing that.” 

Hardman earned his first Pro Bowl selection during his rookie season for his exceptional special teams performance as a returner. Woerner could make his own mark in the league on special teams as well with his ability to contribute without the ball in his hands.

Which Georgia Bulldogs have the most to gain at the NFL Combine?

Ten Georgia Bulldogs were invited to the 2020 NFL Combine, with the notable snub of defensive lineman Tyler Clark. Clark was a key part of a defensive front that didn’t give up a touchdown to a running back in the entirety of the 2019 season. Clark additionally helped UGA have the top rated scoring defense in the country.

The NFL Combine will go on without Clark. Overall, 337 players were invited. Here’s the ten UGA players who got the invite:

Georgia has five players who are projected to go in the first fifty picks on the draft. Some teams (Broncos, Rams) aren’t putting as much on the NFL Combine as they used to. Still, it is an event where players are comparable with each other and will inevitably have some standouts.

NFL coaches have specific measurements and times they look for at each position and if a player doesn’t meet these, then they may take them off their draft board. So which Georgia Bulldogs have the most to gain at the 2020 NFL Combine?

Charlie Woerner, Jake Fromm, Lawrence Cager, and D’Andre Swift are my candidates to boost their stocks the most.

Woerner was an excellent blocking tight end at UGA and may be able to carve out that role in the NFL. Woerner can separate himself as the best blocking tight end if he can score well on bench press and put together a good ten yard split in his forty yard dash.

Swift should put together an excellent forty time, which should be better than the other elite running backs. He can make a case as a first round pick with a sub 4.4 forty.

For Cager it is simple: run a decent forty yard dash to show he has some higher-end speed to get separation in the NFL and come back with a clean medical report on his shoulder.

Jake Fromm will get a chance to show off his underrated athleticism at the combine. If he can show teams that he has the physical traits to succeed, then they should already admire his intangibles and football IQ.

Ten Georgia football alumni invited to NFL Combine

The Georgia Bulldogs will be well represented at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

Ten Dawg lettermen will attempt to turn the heads of NFL scouts and coaches across a series of drills and exercises, all conducted between February 27 and March 2 in Indianapolis.

Today, the NFL released a list of all 337 players invited. Representing the Silver Britches will be (in alphabetical order):

  • Wide receiver Lawrence Cager
  • Quarterback Jake Fromm
  • Running back Brian Herrien
  • Offensive lineman Solomon Kindley
  • Safety JR Reed
  • Running back D’Andre Swift

With several surprising early draft declarations, Georgia is ranked among the top three in number of prospects invited per school.

The only school that matches Georgia’s number of participants is Alabama  and the only school with more participants than both is LSU.
