The backup quarterback will now look for a new home.

A few Texas Longhorns entered the transfer portal on Friday, and backup quarterback Charles Wright was one of them. Continue reading “Texas QB Charles Wright enters transfer portal as a grad transfer”

Steve Sarkisian updates the QB situation heading into Texas Tech

Texas is taking four quarterbacks to Texas Tech this weekend.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian announced four quarterbacks are set to travel and dress for the Texas Tech game this weekend.

Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card, Maalik Murphy and Charles Wright will make the trip to Lubbock with the team.

Ewers missed last week’s matchup with UTSA while dealing with an SC sprain suffered against Alabama. Ewers practiced on Monday and is questionable heading into the Big 12 opener.

Card completed 15 of 23 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown in Texas’ win over UTSA. He is in line to receive the start if Ewers is unavailable.

Freshman quarterbacks Charles Wright and Maailk Murphy are also a part of the Longhorns’ 70-man travel roster. Murphy is returning from an injury of his own this week.

The overall health of the Texas quarterback room is improving — good news for the Longhorns offense going forward.

10 storylines heading into Texas vs. UTSA matchup

Let’s look at a few of the biggest storylines heading into the game.

When the Texas Longhorns scheduled the UTSA Roadrunners, I am not sure they expected the game to be this significant. Continue reading “10 storylines heading into Texas vs. UTSA matchup”

Everything Steve Sarkisian said to the media ahead of UTSA

Steve Sarkisian is keeping the quarterback situation close to the chest this week.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of the Longhorns’ matchup with UTSA this weekend.

After getting banged up at the quarterback position against Alabama, Sarkisian stated Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card and Charles Wright got “healthier and better” this week at practice. He did not name a starter to protect his game plan for Saturday’s matchup.

Sarkisian gave lots of praise to UTSA quarterback Frank Harris. He is an experienced player with extensive knowledge of the offense. Harris can create lots of stress on opposing defenses with his arm talent and mobility.

UTSA is a veteran team who will offer Texas a significant challenge. Jeff Traylor is one of the best up-and-coming coaches in college football. The Longhorns need to leave the Alabama game in the past and take care of business against the Roadrunners.

Here is a look at everything Sarkisian discussed with the media on Thursday.

Predicting the Texas game plan until Quinn Ewers returns

Texas could win the next three games with defense, regardless of who plays quarterback.

If there is any offensive takeaway from the Alabama game, it’s that Texas can win quite a few games with quarterback Quinn Ewers. Winning without him could be difficult.

In the two drives Ewers took the field, Texas scored ten points. The Texas offense was not as explosive or efficient without Ewers who passed for 134 yards on two drives and 12 attempts.

In backup quarterback Hudson Card’s defense, he had to battle an ankle injury for much of his time offensively. Card made some huge throws against Alabama and, one could argue, played well enough for Texas to win.

Texas will still need to find a way to make up for the loss of explosiveness Ewers provides. Let’s look at what Steve Sarkisian could do to ensure Texas’ chances of winning.

Steve Sarkisian on QBs: ‘Don’t get caught up in the next guy’

Sark has a message for his talented quarterback room.

The Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian have a problem on the Forty Acres. It just isn’t exactly a bad one to have. Heading into the 2022 season, he has a plethora of quarterback talent on the roster.

Hudson Card and Charles Wright return from the 2021 roster. Card signed with the Longhorns in the 2020 recruiting class under Tom Herman and returns for his third season in Austin. He won the job in fall camp last season but Sark opted for Casey Thompson, who is now in Nebraska. Wright signed with Texas in the 2021 class after flipping from Iowa State prior to Herman being ousted in Austin.

Sarkisian added two quarterbacks to the equation this year with Maalik Murphy in the 2022 class and Quinn Ewers through the transfer portal. Three of the four quarterbacks in the room were rated as four-star or five-star prospects. The talent isn’t a question at all for the second-year head coach coming off the 5-7 campaign in 2021.

It is also no secret that Texas is targeting yet another top quarterback for the upcoming 2023 class with Arch Manning. The staff has extended just three offers with Manning, Malachi Nelson, and Tad Hudson. Nelson is committed to USC and Hudson has pledged to his hometown UNC Tar Heels. All the eggs are in the basket of Manning at this point in the process.

While Sark is loading up with options at the most important position on the field, he doesn’t want his players to get caught up with who could be here or who is coming.

When addressing the media on Feb. 2, Sark had a message for that group.

“I think the biggest thing for all these guys is focusing on what they need to do individually”, Sark said. “Don’t get caught up in what the guy next to them is working on, or what we’re working on with him. But focus on what they need to do, and let us pour into them to develop them.”

It is an important message, not just for the quarterbacks on this team. Focus on what you can control and let everything else go. When you focus on what you actually have control over, it makes the process that much easier.

“Not everybody is going to develop at the same pace and the same rate, and everybody is at a different stage in their career,” Sarkisian says. “Trusting our history of developing quarterbacks to dive into you individually, and here’s what we want you to work on and make that happen.”

Texas Football Position Outlook: Quarterback

Here is Texas’ quarterback outlook heading into the 2021 season.

Very few positions in all of sports are under a microscope quite like the starting quarterback at the University of Texas. The pressure can be enormous but pay off when expectations are met (hello Vince Young and Colt McCoy).

A new starter is going to emerge during Steve Sarkisian’s first season in charge. Hudson Card and Casey Thompson have been battling ever since the first spring practice and are expected to until the season opener.

Three other quarterbacks are on the roster, with two being first-year true freshmen. Charles Wright is the only one on scholarship, while Ben Ballard and Cole Lourd are walk-ons.

If Sarkisian is known for his one thing, it is his quarterback development. Dating back to his time at USC, many first-round draft picks have been coached by the “quarterback guru.”

While only two guys may have the chance to start, a young quarterback room is in Austin.

Here is Texas’ quarterback outlook heading into the 2021 season.

Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns options at QB in 2023 including Arch Manning

The Texas Longhorns need to look to the 2023 class at quarterback. With Quinn Ewers in the fold, could they get two number one passers?

The quarterback position at the University of Texas has been a talking point the last couple of weeks. The Longhorns secured a commitment from the number one passer in the 2022 class, Quinn Ewers. Shortly thereafter, Jalen Milroe bolted for Alabama. Most recently they replaced Milroe with an Iowa State commit in Charles Wright, who plays right here in Austin.

While it seems the 2021 and 2022 quarterback situation is locked up for now, focus begins to turn towards the 2023 class. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich will look to start getting his style of quarterbacks. Milroe mentioned not being “his guy” and it seems Yurcich prefers the pro style over dual threat passers. Much the reason they went after Ewers.

The Longhorns have offered both of the top quarterbacks on the 247Sports class rankings. One is the top quarterback in California in Malachi Nelson and the other has a NFL legacy attached to him. Arch Manning is going to get a lot of attention, he comes from a quarterback family so it was in his blood to throw the pigskin. Yurcich isn’t afraid to go big game hunting when it comes to the man leading his system on the field.

First we look at the kid with NFL bloodlines, Arch Manning.

Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns flip Iowa State commit

The Texas Longhorns found their quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class. Charles Wright flipped his commitment from Iowa State.

The Texas Longhorns have been on the trail looking for a quarterback commit to their 2021 class after losing Jalen Milroe to Alabama. They found their quarterback with a local product right there in Austin. Charles Wright announced his commitment to Texas on Saturday afternoon on Twitter.  Wright was previously committed to Iowa State.

First off, I would like to thank Iowa State for everything they’ve done for me and my family throughout the recruiting process. Thank you to Coach Sheelhaase for offering me my first scholarship and to Coach Campbell, Gordon, and Manning for believing in me from day 1. After a lot of prayer and talking to my parents I’ve decided to decommit from Iowa State University. With that being said I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at The University of Texas. I want to thank Coach Herman and Coach Yurcich for their belief in me as a player and person. It’s been a life long dream of mine to be a Longhorn and I’m extremely excited to start this new chapter in my life. Longhorn Nation, I can’t wait to get to work! #HookEm – Wright via his tweet about his commitment to Texas.

Charles Wright currently plays at Austin High School. He is the 39th ranked Pro Style quarterback of the 2021 class. Wright will replace Milroe as their lone quarterback commit of the class. Wright will find himself in competition in 2021 with Hudson Card, Ja’Quinden Jackson and Casey Thompson for the starting job following Sam Ehlinger’s expected exit following the season.
